Maximum usable RAM under 64bit Vista with LR2 / CS3?

Forgive me if I'm just stupid but I've been looking and looking and cannot find a definitive answer here on the Adobe site.
What is the maximum usable system RAM that LS2 and CS3 can take advantage of when running 64bit Vista on a multicore x86 processor PC?
Any links to articles or practical hands on experiences posted would be appreciated!

Hey Jao thanks for the quick reply. So if I have an 8GB box running under Vista 64bit LR2 can use as much as it needs beyond the memory used by CS3 and the memory sucked up by Vista 64bit O/S?
It was my understanding that XP 32bit users could use up to 3GB and the O/S would see and use it. I used to have 4GB in a box and XP Pro only used the first 3GB but due to the overhead of memory refresh and the propagation latencies adding up it turned out 2GB was as fast or faster much of the time. So you're saying that CS3 is still limited to the previous 3GB barrier?

I have T431s, with i5-3437U. It came with 4GB on the motherboard. I installed 8GB in the empty slot. Afterwards in control panel >system the installed memory (RAM) reads: 12.0GB(11.8GB usable). However, in the Lenovo Solution Center bloatware, under System>Memory it reports for memory: Currently installed: 12GB. Maximum usable capacity: 8GB. I bought the laptop under the impression the maximum usable capacity was 12GB. Is the Lenovo Solution Center incorrect?

No the Lenovo Solution Center is wrong. There is 11.8gb available for Windows and i have seen the same thing as you see now with the solution center that wrongly report the available memory. Personally i don't use the solution center since i didn't find it any useful and like to keep the compuer as clean as possible.

FS9/FSX under XP/Vista with bootcamp on an iMac

Good day all,
I've been a PC builder/user for many years and am considering an iMac. The one thing holding me back is it's ability to run FS9/FSX under XP/Vista via bootcamp.
Anyone running FS9/FSX on an iMac?
How are the graphics? (everything turned up to the max?)
Do you reommend XP or Vista for FSX?
Which iMac do you recommend? I'm thinking the 2.8 w/ 4GB ram, but don't want to go overboard...
I'd like to make the switch, but have to have FS9/FSX. Thanks for any input.

Sorry to say I think you would be sorely disappointed. For that kind of a game (I was a big user of FSX on my old PC) you need some serious CPU and GPU. An iMac is a great machine but it is NOT a gaming machine. It will play medium level games very nicely, but serious, hard-core games like FSX require a Mac Pro with all the RAM you can afford, and the best video card they offer. Even then, you will lose performance by playing the game on a Mac.
I ran FSX on a PC that had a Quad core extreme, 4GB of fast dual channel ram, and an 8800 Ultra, and I couldn't run the game at max. settings.

Maximum Usable Ram in Macbook (Late 2006)

Hello,
I recently installed 4GB of ram into my macbook and was wondering how much ram is supposed to be showing up in Activity Monitor.
I've heard reports that 3.3GB would be usable, however according to the activity monitor it shows a 3.0GB.
What's the right value, or is it just limited to 3.0 because of Tiger.

I know only SRs can use 4 GB and pre-SRs 3. I think we are talking about the difference between seeing the RAM and actually using the RAM. Mine sees all 4 but only uses 3. His sees the 4 everywhere except Activity Monitor (he's looking at the pie chart, I assume) but mine does see the 4 in Activity Monitor pie chart and that's what I was trying to figure out. My last question to him was about the details of his Activity Monitor. Mine shows 4 GB in the pie chart but the actual numbers add up to 3 (plus a little). The question isn't whether pre-SRs can use all 4 - they can't. The question is why his pie chart says 3 and mine 4. I was just curious b/c so far the only difference was having Windows installed and does that affect how OS X reports RAM in Activity Monitor (not limit use of, but report). No big deal, neither of us can use the whole 4, but I just wonder why my pie chart says 4 and his 3.

Do u use vista 32bit or 64bit software with bootcamp 1.4?

I just got a mac pro and need to use older pc software and will load vista.
macpro is 64bit computer but the bootcamp 1.4 manual says for XP use 32 bit software. Is this the same for Vista, or can I use 64bit vista software?

Bootcamp only supports 32bit windows and while you are correct that your computer is 64bit and can run Vista 64 its generally not recommended.
First the only real advantage to running 64bit windows is you have access to more ram. The downside is that unlike 32bit windows, 64 bit will only install Microsoft Signed drivers. This can be accomplished by searching the net, but until you get them all your computer will have less functionality.
Third (I cannot confirm this since I don't run 64bit vista) is that 64bit windows reportedly has issues running games and such.
Bottom line, problems with getting the drivers, running games just for a more maximum ram means little advantage to going that route.

I am using 64bit and it works fine if recording within an IE
window. All editing, recording, etc functions work fine. I have
tried to do this on a 32 bit version as well with no luck
(recording start menu / button/ control panel windows/etc)

Is there a problem with tdms and 64bit vista?

I have an executable developed on a vista ultimate 32bit platform and am trying to run it on a 64bit vista home edition.
the program writes and reads .ini files with no problem but it will not create and write to a TDMS file on the 64bit version
it works fine on vista 32bit
any thoughts?

I also tried running the .exe in 32bit compatibility mode and no luck

Image.getScaledInstance() does not always work under Windows Vista

Hi:
I've run into some intermittent image scaling problems under Windows Vista (minus Aero effects) that I never experienced with the same program, same image(s), running same Java version under XP. The images I'm using are all JPEGs, and the problem appears to affect approx 1 out of 3 grayscale images (no color ones so far) w/o respect to size (ie: small ones can be problems while larger ones will work). Java -version shows 1.6.0_02-b06. I was wondering if anyone else out there has seen this, or can point out what I may be doing wrong. Sample code to duplicate follows.

That does indeed appear to be a bug. I looks like it's having problems with the alpha value in the color model, so a possible workaround would be to change the color model the image uses before scaling. This may entail creating a new BufferedImage and drawing the old image into it.

Boot Camp, VIsta with SP1 x64 clean installed. Please help!

I clean-installed Vista Ultimate 64bit with SP1 (SP1 comes with Vista, not a separate download) on the latest macbook. As expected Boot Camp Application doesn't work (it doesn't even install).
1.I want to use the function keys (F1, F2, etc) for brightness and volume, which installation program should I run from the Leopard disk? I don't think I can find this "driver" online.
2.How can I get bluetooth on my macbook working? Which installation program should I run from the Leopard disk?
3.iSight camera. Is there a driver for iSight camera in 64bit Vista?
I see there's a "x64" folder in Leopard disk, under folder "drivers". Should I install everything in this folder? I haven't tried yet.

how did you manage to do a clean-install of Windows Vista with SP1 from a slipstreamed media? If I start my Macbook with the Vista SP1 DVD while holding down the "C" key, I will only see the following message:

I can't go on any further, because hitting any key won't work.
The problem seems to the EFI bootloader on the Vista SP1 DVD which is compiled for 64-bit EFI environments (U-EFI 2.0)! The EFI environment used in Apple computers is based on version 1.10 and runs in 32-bit mode. I've found this information on the rEFIt homepage http://refit.sourceforge.net/info/vista.html and I've also found the homepage http://www.jowie.com/post/2008/02/Select-CD-ROM-Boot-Type--prompt-while-trying-t o-boot-from-Vista-x64-DVD-burnt-from-iso-file.aspx from Jowie who has the same problems. He has found out how to make the Vista SP1 DVD booting on an Apple computer by modifying the DVD image which seems to kill the EFI bootloader...
How did you manage to boot from an unmodified Vista SP1 DVD image?

Photoshop Elements does not start under Windows Vista

The Twain-Module of my Canon CanoScan FS4000US Filmscanner works only under Windows Vista (no newer OS!). Fortunately I own an older Notebook with Vista as OS, so I have PSE Version 5.0.2 installed and use it to import my old color negatives via the twain module. Fine! It even works with 42 bit. But suddenly, PSE refuses to start and freezes at the window loading the libraries. At this stage it can only be stopped with the help of the task manager. A little search in the internet informs me that I am not the only user with that specific problem. Any help from Adobe?

After a view days of searching a found a solution: I installed the MS Visual C++ Reditributable für Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 (both 32 bit and 64 bit) and now Photoshop Elements runs without any problems.

Mini SAP 7.01 under Windows Vista

Hi every one,
I wanna share my experience with you for installing version 7.01 under Vista. This might help you.
I have installed the newest version ([Message from Klaus Keller| of Mini SAP under Windows Vista and, believe it or not, it all went correct. It is important that you download version Netweaver 7.01, since previous versions are not supported in Vista.
In the download section (http://www.sdn.sap.com/downloads/netweaver/abap/disclaimer.html) you find in file part 1 the description of process in a HTML & PDF file. You must pay much attention to what is described there; otherwise, it might happen that the installation process is not sucessful.
I´m not gonna describe the whole installation process. This is already in the download files. Just a reference of what I did:
1 ) make a backup of your information and have your Windows Vista disk at hand. It might happen that you have to format the computer´s hard disk if something goes wrong (this happened to me a couple of times in previous versions of Mini SAP and Windows XP). This is so, because it is impossible to erase some files and information in the registry (even with the Registry Clean Tool that is also downloadable in SDN). A new installation try was hopeless in those versions.
2) shut the firewall and antivirus off before you start.
3) don´t try to name your computer using special characters like - _ / & % and so on; additionally, name should be max. 13 characters long.
4) you need a user account for windows, even if you´re the only one to use the computer and you must assign a password to that user. You need it once you start the server through the SAP management console.
5) Install the Microsoft loopback adapter
once installed, system names it LAN-connection2 and you must asign a permanent IP address. Press button characteristics for its element Internet protocol version 4, where you enter:
IP-Address 10.10.0.10
Subnetwork mask 255.255.255.0
Don´t touch element Internet protocol version 6 !!
6) file hosts under c:windowssystem32driversetc --> add an entry for the host like this:

You must have administrator rights and change the status write-protected for being able to modify it.
7) Process takes less than 1 hour, mostly without user interference.
8) if desired, install Adobe LifeCycle Designer before starting with SAP GUI. It happened to me once (Windows XP) that the installed SAP GUI was erased during installation of LifeCycle. It all then turned into a big mess and I had better to format the hard disk.
9) install SAP GUI on your computer, which is part of the downloaded files.
If installation was sucessful, it might happen that you experience a problem when starting the application server (start --> SAP Netwaever 7.01 --> NSP --> Start application server). You get a red screen with a couple of error messages ([read my post|;). It is not a very serious problem, ´cause you can start the server with the SAP management console anyway.
Hope this helps you when installing Mini SAP 7.01 in your computer.

I am having a heck of a time with this install. My OS is Windows Vista Ultimate.
I've read and re-read several forums and tried all the recommendations.
I've tried installing many time now and each time the install runs to 19% and I get a message " stopping Xserver".
Then it runs to 20% and I get a message "preparing packages for installation".
Then it runs for about 3 seconds and I receive the following:

I'm considering purchasing a Macbook Air with 128GB of RAM, but want to know what the actual usable RAM is taking into account the OS and other installed programs?

Will I be able to play games OK under boot camp with the 2.66GHz 24" iMac?

I am considering moving to mac but I have a couple of PC games that I would like to continue using. These games are red alert 3, tomb raider anniversary and i would like to get sims 3.
How well will games play on the new 2.66GHz 24" iMac? or would I need a better computer?
Also will the mac version of sims 3 work well on it, or will this work better if i got the windows version and played it using boot camp.
Finally would it be advised I used XP instead of vista or would it still be possible to play these games using vista with boot camp.

If you grabbed one of the current iMacs you'd have very little trouble playing almost any of the games currently on the market and a good many of the ones scheduled to arrive this year.
Boot Camp is really simple and easy to use so if you don't feel like buying the Mac versions of your games you can quite easily run them on Windows via Boot Camp. However, the Mac versions tend to be just as good as the PC versions (I would say at times they're even more stable).
As for XP or Vista, that's really your choice. The last specs I saw put XP as a better gaming OS than Vista, and for the longest time I forsook Vista for a performance build of XP Pro, but now I've actually started using Windows 7 to do some gaming and have found it to be a good competitor for XP.
That being said, if you're getting one of the newer Macs you're better off with Vista if only for the DDR3 RAM support which, I'm told, isn't found in XP. The RAM works just fine in XP but, again from what I've been told, Vista can use it to it's fullest.

Crystal Reports 2008 fails when called from e Web Service under 64bit OS

I have discovered that Crystal Reports 2008 doesn't work when called from a Web Service running under 64bit Windows platforms (in my case Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP 64bit); practically no object is instantiated. I've tried several solutions without success.
Before creating a wrapper component to use under COM+, is there anybody who has a better and cheaper solution than creating another component to wrap CR 2008 ?

Before I mark this post as assumed answered I would just like to say and re-iterate that at this time there is no one answer and we fully understand your concerns. As you know in CR 6.0 it came in 16 and 32 bit versions because at the time 32 bit was relatively new but 16 bit was the norm. This is also true for 32 to 64 bit, 32 is the norm and 64 bit is relatively new. We know and are well aware 64 bit is the future and we are working as quickly as we can to move in that direction. Because of the complexity of the Product it's not simply a matter of re-compiling all of our dll's in 64 bit format. The core of our data connectivity with our database drivers which are dependant on third party clients must also need to support 64 bit modes. This as well as Printer drivers also need to be 64 compatable, there are a multitude of dependencies that we rely on that must add 64 bit support. As a programmer you are well aware of the issues around Thunking back and forth between 32 to 64 bits, it can cause delays and potentially loss of data which is a whole other issue. Not to mention also that we would have to ship both versions potentially doubling the size of the distribution packages or doubling the size of the dll's to have the ability to work in both modes. Relatively speaking of course, it would not be double the size but the variables would need to be able to allocate 32 or 64 memory blocks.
The other option is to produce 2 separate versions, this alone is a massive project. Any issue would need to be fixed in separate code streams.
So I'm sure you can see it's not simply a matter of saying yes we support 64 bit. It's a massive project that is going to take time to do and we have to wait for the third party drivers to commit also.
Visual Studio .NET 2005 and 2008 is the only option if you want true 64 bit but you will be limited on what DB's you can support and export formats you can export to. They are the only drivers we did convert to 64 bit.

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks. It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel. Especially with iTunes and Safari. Ideas?

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks. It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel. Especially with iTunes and Safari.
I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either. I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas? Any better Malware/Spyware applications?
