Maximum users for mail server

HI I just wanted to see how many users people had on their systems.. i am looking a the 2-quad core xserve, with 16gb ram 3 15,000 rpm disks in raid 5. I currently have 700 users but and i want this server to last until i at least double the users can anyone out there verify they have 1-2K users without a problem? Apple sales claims that it shouldn't be a problem. thanks! chrissy

You don't say what other services you will be hosting so its difficult to give any clear advice?
If you are looking at an Open Directory Master Role for your server with networked home folders then look to balance the load with another server every 60-180 users. This is a loose figure as a lot will depend on the quality and speed of the network as well as client usage. 300 Primary School children won't have as much impact probably as a Design Studio of 10-20 Designers using Photoshop and the rest as well as 3D rendering and some Video production.
I can't really comment on Mail Services at that figure. Seems to work fine with the amount of users of my experience which varies site to site, anything from 5 to 80 Users.
Hopefully there will be others who can offer more insight regarding other services such as Web etc.
If you were wondering about iCal, Wiki and Blog these are new features and I doubt if there is anyone yet with experience of that amount of users? Perhaps you'll be the first? Let us know how you get on.

create a new dictionary with into all host of the domain and i apply a policy for control this dictionary.

This would really be much easier if you had LDAP. If there is any way you could get LDAP to work in your environment, then that would make the IronPort end of things much easier. But if not, then you can do other things.
Using a dictionary as you suggest would work, but it would mean accepting the bad messages and then bouncing them. This is because you can't consult a dictionary during the SMTP conversation. A better solution would be to put the allowable recipients directly into the RAT. That would cause the invalid recipients to be rejected during the SMTP conversation, which will reduce the amount of backscatter you generate.

InitialContext.unbind() deleted the admin user for LDAP server...

I am doing a connection to a LDAP server from Java code. Everything was fine for several days. But today I noticed that I don't execute an unbind operation and decided to put the necessary code. So I used InitialContext.unbind(). The result was that on the first execution of my program everything was OK. But on the second execution I was not able to bind to the server at all with the constructor of InitialLdapContext class even after restarting the machine from which I execute the Java code and the machine with the server. So it went that the admin user I was using for bind and unbind credentials was deleted. I am sure that the unbind() method is causing the problem because I actually broke the two LDAPs that I have (testing referrals...).
Now I use close() method instead of the unbind() method and everything is OK but I wonder how is this possible and why is it not documented?

I can't imagine documenting something like "This method will delete the admin user from your server". If that's the case then it's a bug, not something to be documented. Report it to whoever wrote your Java implementation. If that's Sun, then here:

You might also want to look into your LDAP server and see if it's a known bug there.

VersaMail - "Unable to resolve name" error for mail server

I've had an intermittent but frequent problem with VersaMail when I try to connect to get my email. I frequently get the following message:
"Unable to resolve name pop.mindspring.com. Check your DNS settings or enter the IP address for your mail server."
I also get it occasionally for my Yahoo.com mail addresses as well, so it's not unique to Mindspring.com. Sometimes it happens a lot, but sometimes I get right in with no problems, so the settings I have appear to work - when they want to. Needless to say, it's frustrating and annoying, so if anyone has a way to resolve this, I'd appreciate knowing it.

Problem solved! I had Googled for answers and had found an explanation of DNS servers on another forum where someone was having a similar problem. It seems that DNS servers simply take the domain name we use and search for the IP address for that domain name, then hook us up to that IP address. The error message I was getting was that I needed to check my DNS settings or enter the IP address, so it seemed only logical to me that if I could bypass those goofy DNS servers with their "now I'll do it, now I won't" bad attitude, perhaps I could connect directly with the mail servers. Your tip on how to find the IP address of the mail servers by pinging them was the missing piece I needed. I deleted the POP and SMTP server names for each account I'd set up in VersaMail, replacing them with the appropriate IP addresses, and I can now connect reliably with any of the servers, first time, every time - and lightning fast.

Dns setting require for mail server 2013

I have install exchange server 2013 and working fine but right now i have some change in DNS server record and my mail services stop. what record add to start my mail services ( sent and received). till now exchange server mail box give the error mail not
connected with server. Please revered ASAP.

couple of things to notice. if you saying your exchange services stopped... this wont happen because of DNS or are you saying you exchange is not working/mail flow.
now i would suggest to quickly check the mail services. run a test for inbound and outbound at exrca.com there you will have the proper answer that what you have missed.
and at last.. for DNS.. you need MX and A record for your email server for basic functioning .. and for autodiscover couple of more. lets verify the MX and A record first and then verify the send and receive connector. to verify MX do a Nslookup as below
>cmd
>nsloookup   {This should resolve to your local DNS if you running this from exchange server, which is recommended and should not time out}
>set type=mx
> your-domain.com {This should result "A" record / FQDN of your mail server}
> set type=A {To verify the above FQDN should point to right IP}
> mail.your-domain.com [assuming that in MX output you got mail-your-domain.com]
> 1.1.1.1 [IP of your email server]
if you are able to verify above then your chances are you dont have issue with DNS.
Make sure from oursite you are able to telnet t tour exchange server on port 25 and from inside you are able to resolve names from your exchange server and also have internet access.if you able to verify till this point then its the turn now to verify send
and receive connector. one easy way is exrca.com and then share the results.

How should I partition 10 gig HD for Mail Server???

I plan on making a mail server but I am not sure what partitions to use. I have a 10 gig HD, and I dont want to partition it wrong then have no idea how to go back and redo the partitions without reinstalling. I was thinking something like:
/ = 2gig
swap = 512mb
/opt = 3gig
/export/home = 4 gig
Any idea what steps I should take first to creating a mail server? I still can't find the pop and imap server packages.

It virtually installed itself and seems to work fine right from the start. Now if I could only figure out how to get Sendmail to work with SMTP. All my Internet mail gets refused by Sendmail, incoming and outgoing.

8.1 has this feature depending on the role that the user is in.

Host name for mail server

Hi,
i am developing an application in which i can read the inbox of my outlook.
my problem is that i am not able to connect mail server and getting 'messaging Exception' as
A remote host did not respond within the time out period .
I think i am not able to give the HOST name correctly .
How can i get the host name and from where?

You can get the hostname by clicking on the account properties in outlook, but the port you connect to must be opened by your system admin.

Multiple users for Mail account

I'm a new Mac convert but I am having problems with getting mail set-up. I think this is really because I need the mail software from OS X Server (but I'm not keen on purchasing the whole of OS X Server just for that).
The problem is that mail for several users is delivered to one mailbox at our ISP (and we don't want to change this). Downloading from this downloads everything. On windoze we used to share a single pst file with a lot of rules to put mail in several sub-folders. It wasn't ideal and it wasn't private. I would prefer to have the mail going to separate private mailboxes. I've downloaded the cyrus software used in OS X Server from the Carnegie Mellon website but it seems over-kill for what I want to do and since I'm not an expert on IMAP or POP protocols I'm concerned that it may take me a long time to get it set up.
Does anyone have any advice for me? Is there a simpler solution? Can I get just the mail software for OS X Server from anywhere?

If you already have your webserver internally on that static ip, then you could technically run your own email server on the same machine.
I don't actually see why I have to have a webserver to allow me to run an email server (but let's not get into another discussion). I do run web services and I do have a static ip.
What I have is all mail for my domain arriving at one mailbox on the isp. This is forwarded from the company that I get my domain hosting from. So mail for me@mydomain and mail for other@mydomain is all in the same mailbox. Any download from that mailbox downloads everything. The isp is the only isp in the north of Scotland and I'm glad to have them, but they are small and they don't provide lots of fancy options.
The problem with using separate folders under one user name comes when you reply to the message - it then doesn't come from the correct name. I also don't really want other people using my login. If there is any way round that please let me know.
The problem really comes from my not understanding how much less comes with OS X compared to OS X server. I'm used to unixes coming with most of what you want and I didn't realise that apple were following the microsoft model. I was intending to get familiar with OS X before buying a server. Now it looks as though I'll have to go and buy it anyway. Does anyone know if it is possible/easy to install parts of OS X server?

Can't find correct hostname for mail server

I'm having trouble finding what I'm supposed to put in the "hostname" field for in- and outgoing e-mail. The e-mail I'm trying to set up is of the format "[email protected]". I have tried with "mail.ardal.skulenett.no" and "mx5.agnitio.no", which was the result I got from running a nslookup on the address (see exact output below). I'm pretty much stumped now, and was hoping someone here could give me some pointers on what to try next.

You'll need to ask your email provider for their exact configuration. Server address, ports if different from default etc.
Each Email provider has their own configuration and only they now how it is set up.
Usually there is some kind of documentation outlining this.

the neon green 1 changed for every rule i added... eg: 1,2,3,4,5, etc
for others that need help with similar situation here is a great reference website that helped me alot with setting port forwarding , internet sharing , and NAT / PAT on the ASA 5512-x , im sure it works with the updated asa 5505 as well running 8.3+

I have read the Guide for installaing CS 6.4 on Win and i have found nothing about the Os user the CS 6.4 need....
Like the installation need a local administrator group user maybe Sapinst needn't create user...but i prefer be sure.

SCAN is typically used for RAC.is there any similar thing can be used for qmail / zimbra CS?ZCS has option for ZCS archived server which is usually implemented REDHAT cluster.Can we implement it with other cluster eg. lasture cluster Or anyother?

I got tons of above two errors, thanks for the suggestion of deletion and re-creation of existing A record - it worked
nicely for me. No more errors so far.

TB has honestly cost me a fortune in data and truly effecting my pocket in a huge way! I compact folders online and offline as often as possible. I have a gmail account and a private email account that I'm using with TB both IMAP. PLEASE can someone offer some helpful advice on how to resolve this issue as I now have to re-purchase more data that's just been topped up for 3rd time this holiday and I'm literally only using it for my email(UNBELIEVABLE!!!!) 5gig's just for email and I've literally received only 50-80 new emails over the holiday season. #goinginsane
