Maxtor ATA133, Promise 20378 chipset and IDE 3

When my 865PE FIS2R RMA mobo arrives I want to use a Maxtor 120 gig hd (ATA 133) on IDE3.  Looking through the manual on pg 2-20 it mentions Promise 20378 chipset and IDE3 on the same page.  Can I just directly hook the hd to IDE 3 or do I have to load Promise 20378 chipset drivers from a floppy?  I believe I have to select IDE 3 through the BIOS as the first boot device, is there anything else I need to do?
Just trying to expedite getting my system up and running, any input appreciated!

Hi braveheart,
I have just purchased 2x DiamondMax Plus9 160GB SATA150 drives, I do not want them in any kind of raid, just as two large hard disks. And I am having endless problems with windows XP remaining stable and the M875P motherboard. It could be something else not quite right, like memory or graphics but my hunch is related to the hard disks. Ive ran XP before in the past no probs and never had blue screens with UNMOUNTABLE_Boot_Volumes! and even windows repair failing to scan disks! I have managed to install XP onto them and use it for say 5 hours but it has crashed now 5 times seriously and required a rebuild. Im tempted to switch to 2 non sata hard disks like Samsung  SpinPoint P80 160GB UDMA133 as Im sure the problem is hard disk related. Although I will be welcome to suggestions..
There is not much out there on google about it, the first probs I saw were posted here in the important posts section, the unofficial FAQs
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/service/forum/index.php?threadid=21469&sid=
It mentions a fix in bios 1.9, but when is this coming???
I don`t think you will need to install any drivers if your not going to use it an raid formation
cheers
Brad

    Hello!
    Is SATA/RAID enabled in BIOS?
Have you hit F6 during Windows installation, for allowing Windows Set-up to locate the drivers?
If SATA/RAID was disabled, it wouldn't even appear in Device Manager
If the RAID is secondary storage, then hitting F6 won't acheive anything as Windows is already installed
You will however need to go into the RAID BIOS and create an array before you can use the RAIDed disks

  • Does Promise 20378 on FIS2R support HD 120G?

Will Windows XP and Linux(Probably Mandrake or SuSE) recogonize a Western Digital 160JB HD correctly in terms of size and functionality on my Neo2 FIS2R raid EIDE connector or the other two EIDE connectors? If nobody try it, any one knows the detail support specification of Promise 20378 chipset? Thanks a lot!!!

Just remember to set your LBA mode to "On" or 1 for HDD above 137GB.

  • I875 P and IDE

    Hello,
I have some problems with installation of MSI 875 P Neo FIS2R
My configuration includes two SATA Maxtor and I want to copy the data from one IDE drive.
Can I put the IDE drive in IDE3 (IDE 1 is used by MSI CDRW and DVD) and there is not a lot of space for IDE2.
Do I have to set this IDE drive into master or slave mode ?
Do I have to put it in the middle or in the end of the IDE cable. ?
    Thanks.

I have a single Maxtor 6Y120M0 SATA on the first SATA channel. A DVD ROM & a CDRW on the IDE and 2 Maxtor 6Y120P0 ATA133 disks running (at the moment) on the intel chipset with the USE AS RAID option set to off in the BIOS. The Disks are running fine. I have cpu cooling worries but the disks are great!
I wonder if putting the disks in the Promise controller would improve things as it is, like the Maxtors, ATA133 and the intel Southbridge is only ATA100!
    AND
If the Promise is on the PCI bus and the intel is not will this affect things?
The BIOS IDE settings are labyrinthine, inscrutable and downright confusing and I am still not sure if I have it all correct! I generally just buggered around the options untill the disks all showed up and the SATA showed up inthe boot options!

  • MSI 875P and IDE 3

    Hi
I will be powering up my newly built 875P system this Sunday and I would like some help in getting my hard drives connected/drivers installed before I do that please?
I do not have any S-ATA drives at present and I don't want to use RAID, but have two Maxtor ATA133 hard drives and I have the choice of using IDE 1 & IDE 2 which are ATA100 or, I could use IDE 3 which will support my ATA133 drives, though I don't think I would notice much difference if I used either port?
The installation will be a new one with a Windows XP install and, in order to get my computer to boot from the master drive, say on IDE 3, what settings, in what parts of the BIOS should I change/enable/disable before starting the installation?
I am also right in thinking that, after I have made the changes in the BIOS and the XP setup begins, I need to press F6 to install the drivers but as I don't want to use RAID and I have no S-ATA drives right now, what do I need to choose after inserting the motherboard floppy?
    Regards
    Brave01Heart

    Hey,
Well to answer your dilemma, it can be done but might require some trickery.  I did some experiments and right now I am running 2 WD2000JB drives on it in RAID-0, but by reading other posts I was able to do the following as a test.
Two Seagate Barracuda IV ATA-100 7200RPM 80GB Drives were used.
I don't know if you can do both at once, but I did one at a time and it worked for me.  But I did this with the old 1.5 bios.  I don't know if you can with the 1.74b  or others but I think you might because I don't think the flashes change the bios version on the actual promise 378 controller.
I put one drive on IDE as cable select.  Went into the BIOS and set PROMISE Onboard to AS RAID.  Now I save and exit and hit CTRL-F when the Fasttrak Bios tries to load.  I choose create array within the Promise BIOS but only choose 1 drive.  Then save and exit.  Then repeat with the second drive also as cable select.  It should allow you to do what you are trying.    In fact others who have done the same have reported that it gives a boost in drive transfer rate.  like changing from standard IDE on an old 40 conductor cable in DMA mode, and then plugging a promise card with an 80 conductors and going UDMA.
If you get the error where it will not let you select only one drive, you may need to set the drive jumpers differently.
    Good Luck!  Hope this helps,

  • Info on Promise 20378

    Hi to all  ,
i want to buy another Maxtor 6Y080P0 HD to make a raid 1 (mirroring) on Promise 20378,  i want to make this to increase the reading/writing performance, but i don't know if this controller can really increase my system performance and if it use the cpu to perform this operation or it'is cpu indipendent like a scsi controller.
I hope that someone can give me more info, thanks for all and sorry for my bad english.

Yes, i have read the sticky,  but i haven't found an answer to my question: "The Promise 20378 controller is or not cpu load free?" I don't know if my question is clear  (my knolege of english language is poor), i want to know if the promise controller use my cpu to operate or it's indipendent like a adaptec scsi controller.
    Thanks for all, bye

  • 875P NEO - Strange problem with SATA non RAID on Promise 20378

    Hello,
After replacing an IDE harddisk suddenly my S-ATA drive connected to the Promise 387 controller can not be found anymore.
When booting it says: No devices found, BIOS not installed. I got the the advice to disable S-ATA in the BIOS, but then no S-ATA drive will work ofcourse.
    So here is my situation:
    - MSI 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) mainboard with A6758 BIOS version
    BIOS settings:
    Integrated Peripherals:
    - On board Promise IDE = as S-ATA
    On Chip IDE configuration:
    - P-ATA only
    - S-ATA keep enabled = NO (wouldn't know what this means)
    - P-ATA channel selection = Both (if set otherwise it will not recognize the second IDE
    controller, strange!)
    - S-ATA ports defintion: P0-4th/ P1-3rd (standard setting)
    - Config as RAID = NO
Also I have the Promise 1.0.1.29 drivers installed within XP, I know that MSI says 378_55 is the latest, but when installing a clean XP these drivers did not work at all, so I installed the old ones.Within XP it is recognized btw as being a "WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE controller"
What I am wondering now is:
Is it true the Promise controll controls the 3rd IDE controller as well as the S-ATA HDD? And if so can someone please tell what would be the correct settings in the BIOS when having 2 IDE HDD's connnected to the third IDE controller and 1 S-ATA disk on the Promise controller? Because the strange thing only 1 IDE HDD is recognized by XP, the other IDE HDD and S-ATA not.
Ok, I hope I was a little bit clear, I'm really desperate , so I hope you can help me out !!

Not sure what the problem is.
Like I said, all the settings in Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config should only affect the Intel controller(IDE1&2,Serial1&2)
The only interaction you have with the Promise controller(IDE3,Serial3&4) is through Integrated Peripherals>>Promise Controller(As SATA, As Raid, Disabled). You can also select a drive connected to the Promise as a boot device from Bios>>Advanced Features>>Boot Device Select.
I would take a step back and start over a little more slowly.
My assumption so far is that you have WinXP installed on a drive on the Intel controller and that it is booting/functioning properly.
You are trying to install 2 IDE and 1 SATA drives on the Promise controller.
1- In Device Manager, right-click on the Promise 378 controller and select uninstall. If you know for sure that the "Raid Consolel SCSI Processor Device" is from a driver you installed for the Promise controller, uninstall that too. Otherwise leave it alone.
2- Shutdown/Unplug power and disconnect all 3 drives from the Promise controller.
3- Plugin power/Boot to the Bios and set the Promise controller to "disabled". Also make sure Intel "On-Chip IDE Config" menu "Config SATA As Raid" option is set to "NO"
4- Save and reboot to WinXP. There should be no Bios errors and the Promise entries in Device Manager should be gone.
5- Shutdown/Unplug Power and reconnect 1 drive(the SATA to Serial3 for simplicity) Power + data cables!
6- Plugin power/boot to Bios and set Promise controller to "As SATA"
7- Save and reboot. You should see the drive name briefly after the initial post screen if you've disabled the MSI splash screen.
8- WinXP should say something about finding a new SCSI device. If not just see if it's in Device manager and right-click>>"Install Drivers" and point it to the driver folder from before and install the "WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller Driver". Not the Fastrack ones for raid.
9- Now after another reboot if the SATA drive isn't visible from Windows Explorer, try the diskmgmt.msc utility again.
10- If all this works, try adding 1 of the IDE drives by shutting down again, installing the HDD and checking the Disk Manager. If the drives are already partitioned/formatted you wouldn't need to use Disk Manager. Repeat with the 3rd drive.
If this doesn't work, let me know which step you got to and the problem encountered.

  • Promise 20378 is FastTrak what?

On the K8T Neo-FIS2R board, can someone please tell me what the Promise 20378 equates to for Promise FastTrak drivers?
I purchased the board from newegg on "refurb" and do not have drivers.  I spent a few frustrating hours yesterday trying to get Windows XP Pro to find my SATA drive.  I have read over the solutions on this board, so I know I can get it to work, but I lack any drivers at all.  So, if anyone can point me to both VIA and Promise drivers, I would appreciate it!
    Thank you!
Edit:  By the way, I did finally get a new PSU.  I went with the CoolMax 550W Taurus CX Silent series.  So far, very nice!

  • Neo4 Dual Drive ATA and IDE boot from ATA?

I just set up a Neo4 board using two drives.  A seagate 120Gg ATA drive and a Maxtor 200Gb IDE drive.  I would like to use the ATA drive as the boot drive but I can only seem to startup from the IDE drive.  Is there a trick to get this working?

Quote from: Richard on 28-September-05, 01:07:15
ATA and IDE are the same thing.
Huh.  Well.  Okay, perhaps I'm not posing the question properly.  The seagate drive is plugged into the SATA1 position, while the Maxtor is plugged into IDE1.  They use different cables and connectors which is where my confusion started I guess.  In the BIOS when I select the seagate drive to boot from it will not boot.  But it does off the Maxtor.  I have no reason to believe the drive is bad but hwo knows.  I guess I just want to make sure I'm not missing some setting to properly boot from the SATA1 position when both drives are attached.

  • K9A2 CF Chipset and Mosfet cooling

Decided to start my own thread to track my attempt to improve the chipset and mosfet cooling on my MB.
Can't post pics here, so see XS thread @ http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=172579
    Summary:
1: will use Microcool Mosfet Heatsinks on the mosfets (close to rear exhaust 120mm fan)
2: replace NB (MSI) heatsink with Zalman NB47 (big blue) (80mm fan blowing over it)
3: replace SB (MSI) heatsink with Zalman NB32 (small gold) (bottom mounted radiator with 2x120mm fans blows up onto it).
PS - I was amazed at how small the 790X and SB600 chips are (under big but flimsy heatsinks) and the contact (thermal pads) were not that good.
Did also consider using my (old) Polarflo TT Chipset waterblock on NB (which will fit with a bit of modding as it is so close to PCIe slot) but then tubing between CPU-NB-GPU would be really tight.
Any ideas would be most welcome as I am building it up this week/weekend.

Attached to plasic? Won't do much good.
Don't you understand that if manufacturers wanted cooling that they would supply it with a heat-conducting surface.....
Mostfets, Rams etc....they don't have such....so sticking a heatsink to it does nothing.
Plastic, Ceramic etc are heat isolating materials....and you try to cool that?

  • 975x platinum pue problem con raid sata and ide 2

Blank I have as soon as acquired 975x the platium pue I have a problem with ide2. Configuration:
2 hdd raptor raid 0 on sata 1 and 2
2 hdd maxtor on sata Slavic 3 and 4
1 plextor premium master on ide 1
1 reader dvd slave on ide 1
1 plextor px 716a master on ide 2 ide
the 2 does not come seen in how much has had to disable from bios the jmicron why I could not more make the boot from the raid.
How I can resolve this problem?

    1. Format a floppy disc in XP and make sure you use the "Create MS-DOS startup disc" - option:
    2. Erase all files on that disc BUT the following:
    COMMAND.COM
    IO.SYS (hidden system file)
    MSDOS.SYS (hidden system file)
    3. Now there should be enough room on the Disc for the Flash Tool and the new BIOS file (copy both onto the disc).
The flash tool is included in every official BIOS download from the MSI Support Page for your mainboard:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=746&kind=1
    4. Ususally it is a good idea to scan your disc for errors before you use it to flash a new BIOS.
    5. Restart computer, boot from disc and enter flash command followed by BIOS file name:
    AWFL865.EXE W7246IMS.716

  • [MOVED] H55 chipset and KMS with HDMI/VGA

I recently purchased a Shuttle SH55J2. As there seems to be KMS issues with the Auburndale chipset and the VGA output (output is wavey with KMS on, no X with KMS off), I am attempting to get the HDMI output working with my monitor. I am using a Dell E248WFP which has VGA and DVI input. I am using an HDMI cable with an HDMI-DVI converter.
The problem is the monitor comes up with screen with green background and white text starting from bios all the way through boot to login. I have attempted changing the colorspace of the monitor from RGB to YPbPr, but it simply changes the color of the background. Any clues on how to fix this?
New: I've bought a new hdmi capable monitor. However, with KMS enabled using HDMI->HDMI, the monitor receives no signal, while the HDMI->DVI still has the color problems. With KMS off, HDMI->HDMI works and HDMI->DVI has no signal. So now it appears the KMS is the real issue.

It's likely that the laptop's attempting to output audio through the HDMI as well. Have you tried this? Right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area near the clock (in Desktop mode) and select "Playback devices." What's listed there, and what has the green check mark? Try selecting your speakers and clicking "Set Default."

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.
