Maxtor Basics Personal storage

Hello Mac Users!.
I've just changed over to Mac after many years as a PC user. I have an iMac using V10.4 Tiger as its OS and I'm struggling with the new system. I have brought over a Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 as an external hard drive which I would like to use for backup, probably using SuperDuper! The problem is, my iMac insists on treating it as Read Only. I really don't fancy getting a brand new Firewire drive for this purpose unless I really have to.
Can anybody tell me what I need to do to make it part of my Mac system?
Any ideas welcome.

  • Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 ext. HD. Yea or Nay

I saw the ad for a large office supply store and they had this drive for $69 over this weekend.
I went Maxtor's website and they showed no Mac compatibility. I wondered why, so I dropped tech support a line. This is the response I got, it includes some info on chipset as well:
    "Dear Nick Stearns:
Thank you for sending your MAXTOR E-mail inquiry.
Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 drives come pre-formatted for NTFS and these drives are only supported on Windows 2000 and XP computers. However, you can use a 3200 drive on a Macintosh computer if you format (erase) the drive with the Mac OS X Disk Utility. These drives have Prolific chipsets in them and we have only seen compatibility problems with some systems using the Intel 82801 USB chipset."
Has anyone used one of these drives successfully?
I have a backup boot drive, if I get this one it would be primarily for archive storage.
Not a necessity but seems like a real good deal, unless it won't work.
Thanks for your replies in advance.

Nick, I saw your other thread and admonished you there - LOL!
They are right, it should work, but there is a huge difference between should and will. For archiving it probably would be fine.
Otherwise, get an enclosure from OWC and a bare drive from someone on sale and do it that way.

  • Unable to save a shared filter if personal storage is disabled

Somebody want to test this one?
Create a user with no rights to Personal Storage (no "My Folders").
    Log in as that user.
    Create a new filter.
Try to save it to a shared folder.
On my system, the OK button is greyed out on the Save As dialog. I can't save a filter with this user.
    Using Firefox.
    I hate O-R-A-C-L-E.

Yes, I have done that. If I grant U1 the rights to Personal Storage, I can save a filter to a shared folder, because the OK button is active on the Save dialog. If I do nothing more than revoke Personal Storage rights from U1, then the OK button is greyed out when attempting to save the filter to a shared folder.
What did you find when you tested the scenario?

  • Use external for backup and personal storage

    Hey all,
I was wondering if I could use my external for time machine backups and personal storage. I have a seagate 250 and time machine is currently working great. The only thing is that my apple hd is filling up. Even if I lose all my current backups, is there a way to set maybe 50 gigs a side for movies and use the rest for backup?

Partitioning the drive as joshz suggests is the best route at the moment. Unfortunately Apple does not provide any way to limit the overall size of the database directory. You could also create a blank disk image on the backup drive in which to store other information, but this is almost the same as creating a separate partition. Remember that the two partitions will display as two individual volumes, so it will appear like you have three disks attached (your main one, your backup one, and your storage one).

  • Is Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 compatible with MacBook OSx 10.6?

I can't see the external hard drive on my MacBook.  Is there a compatibility issue?

Have you partitioned and formatted the drive for Mac?

  • Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 and Airport Extreme Base Station

I recently purchased an external hard drive and the newer Airport Extreme Base Station. I have two computers. 1 Macbook Pro and 1 PC running Windows Vista. I am having trouble downloading files from the HD over the Base Station to my Vista Machine. I can connect the drive directly over USB to my vista machine and the problem disappears. But when downloading files to Vista over the AEBS i get an error about the Path not existing. I then tried it on my Macbook Pro with no difficulties. I then fired up Parallels and installed the software on my Windows XP image and it works fine. My question is has anyone come up with a fix for this interaction between the AEBS and Windows Vista.

You said you are "using the express to extend my range and play tunes using air tunes". How did you manage to set that up, if neither the Airport Admin Utility nor the Airport Setup Assistant won't allow you to configure these two devices?
    Two suggestions:
    1. try using another Mac or PC
    2. look hard to make sure you don't have some sort of third-party firewall software or VPN client software running on the Mac than is unable to configure your Airport devices.

  • My iMac4 has depleted its disk space, a fter numerous rebuilds the database is still generating error messages My external HD is basically my storage for all data. Is it feasible to purchase Memory...?

If this is a viable option how would I connect the memory in an effort to purchase additional disk space and upgrade to Lion? I currently use Snow Leopard as my OS but there are too many compatibility issues to consider. Thank you for your response. Cheers.

You are confusing RAM (Random Access Memory) with data storage space on a hard drive.
Cloud ( offsite server data storage) services to purchase remote data storage are NOT going to help you with this issue.
You need to free up disk space on your Mac's internal hard drive.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Moving iTunes library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    Moving iPhoto library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506
    Moving iMovie projects folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
Things to consider before moving your iPhoto Library Folder to a new or external location like an external hard drive.
If you make movies on any iDevices using iMovie for iOS,, then transfer the video footage, the IOS version of iMovie saves the footage as a movie file in IPhoto for IOS and will automatically get transferred to iPhoto for the Mac when you upload the video from your iDevice.
Newer versions of iMovie will work and link those video files found in your iPhoto Library on your Mac, but those links can be lost if you move your iPhoto library and you will not be able to relink that video afterwards as the current versions of iMovie seem to not have a relink option for the video portion of the files (ironically, current versions of iMovie HAVE the ability to re-link the audio files from the video footage, though  (The inability to re-link the video files could be a possible bug or oversight in current versions iMovie).
The lost video links show up as "blacked-out" video blocks with no content.
    Before moving the iPhoto Library
If you make movies with iMovie using iPad or iPhone video then 'Consolidate' the files before you finish. This will gather (albeit by duplicating) all the relevant files in the project in one place. After consolidating/duplicating all of the audio and video footage to a seperate, independent location,it should be safe to move your iPhoto library.
The potential way to circumvent this issues maybe to try and import  iPad and iPhoto video directly into iMovie which would be another solution.
    Good Luck!

  • Strange Problem in PA30 Basic Personal Data - Bank details

    Hi Experts,
We are facing a different strange problem.
When we go to PA30 T-Code & enter Personla No. (eg. 1000001) & fill all details, like
    *Actions
    Organizational Assignment
    Personal Data
    Addresses*
After when I come for "Bank Details" & Create, I am getting Default values for this screen fields,
    *Bank details type
    Payee
    Postal Code/City
    Bank Country*
    I am just keying
    *Bank Key
    Bank Account*
Now after Saving, & when  checked in table PA0009 the EMFTX, BKPLZ, BKORT field (Text, City, Pin), are not getting added(Those fields are blank in Table).
The Same when I add this fields manually all are appearing in table.
(Example. when I go for Bank Details, I am getting Default pin & city maintained in Address field just above, Lets say 500001, HYD. & this is not updated in table when it shown default, But If I clear 500001 & add same(any Value) again back its updating in table. This is happening for Payee, Postal Code/City).
please help me with this strange situation.
    Thanks,
    Dileep .C

    Hi Sandeep and Dileep,
I am having the same problem as well.
The EMFTX field is empty in PA0006 after i created a new Bank record in PA30.
I actually tried creating a new Bank record via portal for another employee, EMFTX field is filled with value.
I noticed that from backend, I will not be able to save IT9 if IT6 is not exist.
If I do the same via Portal, IT0009 can be created while IT0006 is not exist.
For your info, i check the module pool MP000900 in table T588M, it has 20 entries with different variable key, the variable key field is one of the colum which I believe the value is used to differentiate the countries. For my case, I can the country that I am testing is not having feature P0009, both the standard screen and alt screen are pointing to 2000.
    Please advice.
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Justin

    1. On stage, select twitter button. Go to 'properties' tab and enter "twitter_btn" in instance name text field
    2. Insert new layer in timeline.
    3. Press 'F9' or open 'actions' window
    4. Copy the following code:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    // Twitter Button click event
    twitter_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, handleTwitterButtonClick);
    function handleTwitterButtonClick(e:MouseEvent):void {
        navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://twitter.com/Play2Improve"), "_self");
In navigateToURL, second parameter can be "_self" (open url in same browser window) and "_blank" (open url in new browser window)
You do same stuff for all other buttons and links.

  • Airport Extreme and USB Hard Disk

    I did the following
    1. Plugged the Maxtor Basics 3200 into my MacbookPro USB port
    2. Formatted it FAT32
    3. Unplugged it.
    4. Plugged it into AEBS USB port, put around 50g of files on it.
Now, from my MacbookPro I can see the drive, but not the files.
If I plug back into the MacbookPro USB I can see everything.
    Any ideas???
I tried with firmware 7.1 and 7.11, no difference

You might make sure that you eject the disk from your MacBook before putting in back in your Airport Extreme.
I had three issues specifically because of not dismounting:
Couldn't write below the root directory if I didn't dismount
Couldn't connect to the drive if the network name changed
Passwords were not accepted when I attempted to remount the drive
    I'm using a Maxtor 500GB Personal Storage 3200.
    Good luck!

  • Time Machine -Error Red "i" message: "Unable to complete backup. "

Trying to use Time Machine to backup to a Maxtor Basic Desktop Storage device. Keep getting error message. I have read all posts I could on the discussion boards. Repairing the disk doesn't work... it says it is working correctly.
It starts the backup and then quits after about 10 minutes. The storage is 500 GB. There is nothing on it. Help. First time with an Apple issue. Need very basic instructions! Thanks!

Mr Podini, Sorry to break into this discussion but you were helping me in the Spring and we never resolved the issue with TM. My TM pref's box still states, "206.1GB remains of 232.8GB - Oldest Backup - --, Latest Backup - June 8. 2008; Next backup: Today 3:25pm". I downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget per your request, but the thing sits "frozen" on my desktop as we speak and doesn't seem to work at all.
That sounds like you're signed-on as a user that doesn't have permission to read your logs. Try it as your Admin user; if that works, you can grant the other user permission to read the folder /private/var/logs and it's enclosed files. As Admin, from the Finder select +Go > Go to Folder+ and type /Private/var/ in the box provided. Then find the logs folder, do a +Get Info+ on it, click the padlock at the bottom, enter your Admin password, and select the user in question. That should give it read rights.
The external HD blinks typically, while the computer is on, like it's backing up something. When I enter TM, it seems to be backing up everything. at least from "today", back 4 windows to June 8, 2008.
When I first had Leopard(12/07), the backup seemed to work okay and in the months following December 2007, there were Many windows when I opened TM, to look through. How the heck can this thing be working correctly? I apologize again for breaking in, but you seem to know more about TM, than anyone else that I've read in the past months.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. TM performs hourly backups if it's on and the backup disk/Time Capsule is available. But it doesn't keep all of them for long.
TM keeps one backup per week as long as there's room, and one per day (the first) for a month. All others are deleted after 24 hours.
If you see something else going on, please start a +*new thread+* with full details of your setup, and try to explain what you're seeing and why you think it's wrong.

  • Network Attached storage advice

Can anyone tell me if Maxtor's Shared Storage Plus NAS drive works okay with the iMac core duo.
I'm concerned about the software intallation disc - I'm guessing the software is not universal.
Any other iMac core duo owners using a NAS successfully? Any other brands recommended? Any tips?

I think you will find that you do not need the software!!
The software is usually a set of utils to maintain the NAS, and is not needed to connect to it.
I have a Linksys NAS which does not have Mac software, and is not suported by Linksys. However, I just plugged it in and the iMac found it on the network.
Basic functions on the NAS were then accessed via Safari.

  • Maxtor 3200 v Apple Mac - a love not made in heaven!

I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 external HD which I was using as a Time Machine. The ex-HD is connected to the Mac directly via a USB cable. Recently, the Time Machine has stopped backing up files full stop.
I have tried the following steps, but "com.apple.TimeMachine.plist" does not exist in the library and the Mac does not even recognise the ex-HD on the system.
Open Macintosh Hard Drive > Library > Preferences
Locate the "com.apple.TimeMachine.plist" file and delete it
    Restart your computer
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Click Time Machine
Setup Time Machine again by choosing your drive as the destination and click Use for Backups
    Grateful for any other suggestions.

you are looking in the wrong library for the plist. you need the one at the top level of the drive, not in your home directory. but if the system does not see the drive the plist is not the problem - the drive is. do you see the drive in disk utility? if yes try repairing it with disk utility. repair disk, not permissions.

  • Change defaut port for personal cloud

Hey, i own 3 iomega nas for a long time and never been able to use the personal cloud.
What happens is my ISP blocks the defauts ports used by iomega for personal cloud, 80 and 443.
I have already changed my ISP and looks like here in brazil the lowers ports are all blocked. Port 50500 or midia is fine.
How can i change the defaut ports, to use for example 8080 and 4430?
I also need to change ports because if i want to use all 3 personal cloud it wont work if they using all same ports.

    Hello rjcarlantonio
I unfortunately do not have a way for you to modify the http/https ports for personal cloud on these devices.
You can however change the 50500 (basic remote storage manager access) port to another port in the 50500-50599 range.  I can't say for certain if this will work well for 3 devices trying to host clouds on the same internet connection as personal cloud was not designed for that.

  • I can't figure out why my ipad is saying it's full but I have just purchased storage on the cloud

Not sure what I am doing wrong here. I am not able to take pic or vids on ipad as it's saying it's full but I have purchased storage on the cloud and set it up as directed on the website
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do please
    Thanks

An easy check.  Go into the settings on your iPad, and under your iCloud account, check the setting for "photos".  If there is a setting for "my photo stream" and it is on, then you are using Photo Stream - My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
Note from that FAQ that Photo Stream never used any of your personal iCloud storage anyway, so buying more personal storage does not increase space for photo stream.  Photo stream is a system intended for synchronization of images across multiple devices and was never intended to be used as permanent storage or backup.  It is a temporary parking place for images to allow for them to be shared across multiple devices.
With iOS 8.3 and OS X 10.10.3, there is a new service, iCloud Photo Library which actually IS online storage of your photo's - all your photo's.  It does use space in your personal iCloud account.  Since the default free storage is only 5GB and is used for your iCloud mail, backups, synchronized files and data, the default setting for iCloud Photo Library is to keep all photo's on the device as they are, in order not to fill up your free iCloud storage.  If you purchase additional storage and want to remove photos from an iDevice or computer, then you need to change the settings on the device to clear out space once it has uploaded images to your iCloud account.
If, in your iPad's settings, general, about just look at the "version" line.  If it is not showing 8.3, then you cannot possibly be using iCloud Photo Library and must be using Photo Stream.  Until you upgrade to iOS 8.3 you would not even have the option to use iCloud Photo Library as it is a new service, introduced with iOS 8.3.
If you are running iOS 8.3, under your iCloud account settings, under "Photos" you will have three settings:
    1. iCloud Photo Library - enable this to use your personal iCloud account storage for cloud storage of your photo library
    2. My Photo Stream - enable this to synchronize photo's across all your devices that share the same iCloud account.  This does NOT use any of your personal iCloud account's storage.  Images will be automatically deleted from your stream after 30 days.
    3. iCloud Photo Sharing - allows you to create albums which can be shared (viewed) with others.
