Maxtor hard drive: Partitions and erasing?

I have a Maxtor hard drive that is currently partitioned 1/2 for Mac and 1/2 for windows.......i just got a new mac so i don't need the windows 1/2 anymore. Can I erase everything from the windows 1/2 and reformat it for mac without deleting any of the data stored on the mac 1/2???
It does say in disk utility that it will erase all the data on the particular volume (which would be the windows formatted one?)
i don't want to lose anything that's on the mac partition of the hard drive.
thanks!
zack

Erasing one partition of a hard disk won't affect anything on the other partitions.

  • Trying to clean install Mavericks but hard drive partitioned and won't allow

My MacBook Pro 2012 was set up with a partitioned hard drive. Now, as I upgrade from 10.8 to Mavericks, I'd like ot use the Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then use the interface to install Mavericks, but it won't let me erase the hard drive.
On the left side of the Disk Utility, below the main hard drive, there are two drives noted, with the OS and something else.
Can you suggest how to do something here? I'm stuck halfway.

I'm not sure what you are doing, but if the Recovery HD is still there:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook Pro Hard drive partition and Bootcamp Info.plist

Okays, so i was planning on installing windows through USB bootcamp as my CD is broken. I tried editing the Info.Plist and i managed to stuff it up and lost original now it doesnt work, how do i redownload my original one.
THEN i tried to partition the hard drive with disk utility, i accidentally didnt resize each partition and force quit the app and now my hard drive shows 249.56 GB FULL instead of 129.45 full, what do i do to fix my hard drive. in the "about this mac" it shows half my hard drive used as "Other". Please help

    Hi Michele,
Sounds like a corrupted partition map. Can you run the Bootcamp Setup Assistant again to restore the drive to a single volume? Otherwise, I'd backup the OS X side and then re-partition the drive and start from scratch, then restore your backup so at least you'll be back up and operational on the OS X relatively quickly.

  • Hard Drive Partitions and Factory Reset

    Hello,
I bought my HP Pavilion g-series and I used it for a while, then I decided to install Ubuntu as well as I want to do some programming. I partitioned my Harddrive and I made a mistake, and the Harddrive is now labelled as "Simple Volume".
I want to change the Partitions back to "Primary Partions". I tried to do a sytem recovery from the HP recovery partition, but the option is deactivated.
Also, I want to partition my Hard drive into so that I will have 100GB reserved for Windows 7 and the remaining 650GB for my files and documents so that I can access them from my Ubuntu as well.
If there is a way to change the Partitions back to Primary Partitions and also to safely partion it again, I will be relieved to hear it and implement it.
    Thank you

Dan has a guide on partitioning the hdd. The short of it is that you have 4 primary partitions from the factory and must decide which to do without in order to have an extra partition. He recommends to use the "System" partition for your extra partitioning scheme.

My dad has dementia - does not remember his password. His hard drive has been erased. We need to reload Mountain Lion and can't figure out how to do it. Internet recovery asks for his Apple ID and password. He has no idea. I have an Apple ID but have never bought anything through the iTunes store so it won't accept my Apple ID. I don't know if his computer is under warranty. He does not remember if he has Applecare. I tried reinstalling Leopard -- the computer originally came with Leopard -- but the computer screen goes grey and a message comes up saying I need to restart. He wants to give this computer to me since it's useless to him. What do I do to get a system on it again?

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • TS1440 Will it erase my hard drive, photos and music?

Hi all! I'm happy to follow above procedure. Seems easy enough. But will it erase my hard drive, photos and music? I don't use iCloud... Thanks all!

You haven't updated Leopard to 10.5.8?
If you want to upgrade further:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • Imac hard drive died and was replaced by apple.  Data lost but is remains on ipads.  Computer address is different so can't sync without erasing ipad data (which I need back on repaired imac).  How do I do this?

How do I transfer data from and Ipad/iphone to an imac with a different address then initally setup with?  Our hard drive died and was replaced free of charge by Apple, our data was lost on the hard drive but exists on our small devices.

Since Apple replaced the hard drive does that mean you have AppleCare? If so, call them. If not, you must have paid pretty good to get it replaced and so I would think you have some possible right to ask a followup question at the store that did it.

  • My hard drive crashed and when I replaced it, I am unable to sync most of my music.  The message "file not found" appears.  I have all my music on my .  How can I upload these to iCloud or iTunes?

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone.  Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone.  one or two from each album.  I still have an iPad with all my songs on it.  I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad.  I have no music on iCloud when I sign in.  Can anyone help me???

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

  • External Hard Drive worked and now doesn't work

I've got a Macbook Pro and a Seagate external USB hard drive. I had the hard drive attached and everything was going good until it became disconnected from the computer without being ejected. Now whenever I try to plug it in i get a message saying that the disk is unreadable to this computer, or something to that effect.
After searching around, some people have suggested to others in similar situations to use Disk Utilities to repair it. When I open Disk Utilities, the HD is listed in the sidebar, but it won't let me repair it, or mount it.
Any suggestions for getting the hard drive to work again? Thanks in advance!
    Kyle

This may be of some help.
For Seagate drives, you can download the free SeaTools utilities from Seagate's website. Unfortunately I think they only run on a PC. However, you should be able to look at and test the drive with these utilities. I had a Seagate drive that somehow had it's partition info altered when I plugged it into an old laptop. I put the drive physically into a PC laptop and then used SeaTools on a boot CD to reset the drive back to its Native Drive capacity. Took it out and back to the Mac and then everything was visible again.

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:
