Maxtor OneTouch II Drive Undetected

After first connecting my 200Gb Maxtor OneTouch II drive to my iMac it is unrecognized. There is no icon present on the desktop, nor is it found in Disk Utilities area. The only area I see proof of it is in System Profiler, under USB.
My current thoughts are that it may be formatted incorrectly, most likely in NFTS, rather than FAT-32 or Mac's HFS+.
Any thoughts on how to make this external drive work?

• Panther: Installation on Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External Fire Wire Drive.

I am waiting on delivery of a Full Retail Version Panther 10.3 purchased on eBay to be installed on a Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External FireWire drive.
Are these the steps I should take to format, partition, & properly install Panther on the external FW Drive?
I have updated my OS 9.2.2 with the latest Firmware Update Pbook 4.1.8.smi.
1. Boot (Panther) from the install disk holding down the C key.
2. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility from Panther.
3. In Disk Utility select FireWire HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
4. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
5. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. This procedure will erase the contents of the entire External Fire Wire HDD. Select option to zero all data.
6. Click OK. Click Erase.
*. After eFWD is erased. Is this when I will partition eFW Drive? I plan five (5) partitions: 1-10GB for back up of my internal HD, 1-20GB for OSX 10.3, 1-50GB for future OS, 1-100GB for Storage and the remainder GB for Storage.
*. After eFWD is partitioned.
7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
8. Choose the option to Clean Install on Partition for OSX 10.3.
9. Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
10. Proceed with installation on Partition for OSX 10.3.
11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
14.???Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder. I don’t see a User Folder in my present System Folder of OS9.2.2.
15. Install on the Panther partition; MSOffice, Quicken, and TurboTax.
16. Copy or Clone to the OS 9 partition my existing internal hard drive.
I hope all that is left is to enjoy.

Thank you for the correction and encouragement. I have changed the erase step to partition. This will be my first experience with partitioning and with OSX. After three weeks of research and discussion I am excited about using OSX and probably will change my strategy to doubling my internal HDD to 20MB, increase RAM to 512MB and install the Panther on the internal drive. If this is my goal, which OS should be put on the external FW drive first, if I want to boot OS 9 from the eFWd instead of the internal? I don’t know if Panther will open archived files produced with OS9 applications? That being the only need to have a working version of OS9. Thanks again for all the help from the discussion groups.

• Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire

My Maxtor OneTouch III does not mount with Firewire.
I changed both cables, and ports on the drive to try with my 400 port on the MacBook Pro.
The drive will start up, the light will flash, remain steady, flash again. And then just as the Mac finishes booting, the light turns off and it does not mount.
It works just fine with a USB cable. But I bought it so it could be used as a firewire drive.
Other firewire drives work.

Hi Judy,
Has this external HDD ever worked while connected with FireWire? (In other words, did the drive just stop working via FireWire, or is this the first time you've tried to hook it up via FireWire?) Does it work over FireWire on another Mac?
If the answer to those questions is no, it's likely that the firewire ports on the external HDD are bad.

• Solaris 10 and Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB USB 2.0

Hi.
Anybody please help. I need to find out if Solaris 10 will take care of finding this external Hard Drive.
I am using USB to connect IBM xSeries 335 Intel Xeon Processor to Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB USB 2.0 connection and Installing Solaris 10.
I need the Information ASAP.

I realize this forum's name is Storage, but unfortunately, it's not the correct forum for your question. We generally try to keep the discussions focussed in on the Sun SPARC arena.
Successfully mounting a USB storage device is a part of the OS, so you'd be better off searching through the Solaris on x86 forum in the OS group.
Indeed, I think that drive has already been briefly discussed over there.

You should see the drive listed in "iostat -En" output.
"vold" should mount it automatically for you, if the drive contains a Solaris
supported filesystem. AFAIR, the Maxtors come preformatted with a PCFS
filesystem (DOS FAT32 filesystem). "vold" mount the device under
/rmdisk/....

• Maxtor OneTouch III

I have a Maxtor OneTouch III that is currently formatted for windows. I've heard that you can get NTFS for mac and then it will work? I would reformat it but I have 300gb of files on it and I have no way of backing them up. Is there a way to access the hard drive without erasing everything?

I've installed MacFuse but I can't really figure out how that helps. I plug in the hard drive and it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." What should I do? I can't find a MacFuse control panel or anything.
By the way, I've tried using it with parallels... No luck.

• Back up strategy with Maxtor OneTouch II

I just bought Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB. I need help with the backup strategy with or without Retrospect. The external Maxtor should be used for storage and backup.
My questions, since the instructions and Help in Retrospect are confusing:
When I want to first backup the entire startup disk can I simply drag it to Maxtor on the Desktop or should I use Retrospect?
In Retrospect, should I use "Removable Disk" or "File"?
How long does it take with Maxtor FW 800 ? I've got 70GB startup disk to copy. Is it hours?
Can the copied volume on external disk be used as startup disk?
I would appreciate your experience.
Milan

I suggest you use Disk utility to partition the drive so you have a space large enough for your boot drive. Then use carbon copy cloner, which you can find from versiontracker.com to "clone" your boot drive to the partition. you need to use a program like this, because various files needed to create a "boot drive" are hidden.
please note, the best back-ups are completely disconnected from all computers and power sources. Just something to consider.

• Unrecognized Maxtor OneTouch 4 mini on Mountain Lion.

So I now have a Macbook Air (mid 2013), OS X Mountain Lion. Trying to read/write on my Maxtor Onetouch 4 mini. I already tried installing Paragon, MacFuse and not sure what else. None have worked. I also have a password on it, so I usually unlock it with Maxtor Manager (used to work on my Macbook Air (late 2010) with Snow Leopard. One important thing : I am not willing to reformate it. Anyone got any other solution? I need this sovled ASAP, since all my school works are on it

Without any more information than you've provided I'd suggest reformatting the drive:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

• Maxtor OneTouch III cannot disable password (security settings)

I have a question regarding my iMac Intel running Leopard and Maxtor OneTouch III for use with Time Machine.
It was a back up before and was connected with my iMac G4 running Tiger.
Now the iMac Intel shows the Maxtor, but everytime the iMac shuts down and get started again, the system ask for my password.
With the post here under from Jan 19, 2008, I give it a try by connecting the Maxtor III with my iBook with Tiger, I'm not able to disable Security !! I can go to Security settings, but the field "disable password" is grey and I cannot select it.
Has anyone the solution? Thank Frank

So here's what you do if you're drive is password protected, and you just upgraded to Leopard and your Mac isn't finding your drive:
If by chance you have the CD that came with the drive great! Or if you have a copy of the installers somewhere, it should contain the exe's for Windows. I had a copy on my Mac, copied to a thumb-drive, and installed the Maxtor OneTouch Manager on my Windows machine. Ran the installer, restarted, then connected my drive, which by the way is formatted for Mac, the Manager launches and asks if you want to reformat for Windows, say no! Then, you will be prompted to input your password to unlock the drive. Unlock, then go to Settings, and disable Security. You will be prompted for your password again. Now that you've unlocked it, unplug and plug back into your Mac, and BAM! You got your drive working on Leopard! See ya!!

These don't seem to be errors as much as a log of the activity of the software.
How did you install the software? If there is a installer one option might be to uninstall it. Or use Spotlight to find all the Maxtors, or check Maxtor forums.
There's Google as well with this first hit:
Blog Quote:" If, like me, you upgraded your Powerbook to Mac OS X "Tiger" only to find it crashing every time you plugged in your Maxtor OneTouch firewire disk, fear not. The solution turns out to be quite simple.
If you have the following kernel extensions in your /System/Library/Extensions/ folder, then move them out to the desktop and reboot:
IOFireWireMxBt.kext
MaxtorPowSecDriver.kext
The backup software is Retrsopect Express - can you find that?

• I have all my old photos from my PC on a Maxtor external hard drive. How can I transfer them from this to my Macbook Air?

I'd like to transfer my old photos from my PC which are stored on a Maxtor external hard drive to my Macbook Air. Is there an easy way of doing this? I don't know if the Maxtor hard drive is Windows specific or if it's compatible with Mac. Anyone know?

It should be fairly simple. The Maxtor should be recognized as "read only" since it's formatted for windows. Connect it and in iPhoto select, iPhoto > File > Import to Library.. > Point to your external hd.

• Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external hard drive doesn't work. What gives ?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external
Hard drive does not work. It is FireWire to
Thunderbolt . When I connect it it crashes. What
Gives ?j

Maxtor, must be an old one.
There is a disconnect occurrence in some cases with FIREWIRE ext. HD and Mavericks.
(indications mentioned on the Mavericks board)
This is known and being looked into.
Ive looked into this much myself.
Suggest using another Mac and offloading data onto a USB3 and using same until there is resolution.
Any normal USB ext. HD is working fine.
Peace

• How to play flac files from a Maxtor external hard drive

Trying to use an old mac mini PPC to play music from a Maxtor external hard drive. Files are flac format. Would like to move files to iTunes library individually or by album or ideally only when I want to play them. Am not that accustomed to using a Mac, just finding my way around...flac file conversion
is possible for this old mac or do I need to download some freeware?

If you want to convert your FLAC files (I would recommend to Apple Lossless format) then have a look at the free XLD software.
See http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html
Apple Lossless format is the same exact quality as FLAC, roughly the same file size but works natively in iTunes and on Apple's iPod/iPhone/iPad devices. It can also be played in most Windows applications including Windows Media Player if you add the right plugins or codecs. Apple Lossless is a free open-source format now, just like FLAC.

• Maxtor One Touch Driver on Windows

Hello,
I have a Maxtor One Touch Drive that works fine on Mac OS X,
but on Windows XP, it says I need to install a driver for it.
Does any one know where I could find this driver?
I looked on Maxtor (Seagate)'s website but there was only a driver for Windows '98.
Thanks!

You must delete the existing NTFS partition before you can create a new OS X partition. You may have to connect it to a Windows XP system and use the disk administrator to delete the partition(s) from the disk.
I just did this with an ULTRA disk case with a 200 GB drive that was previously used on a Windows machine.
