May be a dumb question...

Just got the iphone and am excited and FRUSTRATED! I just read through some of the earlier posts about ringtones and a bug in being able to sinc...just successfully resolved or got around that problem. Now my dumb question is...I played a couple of tracks I downloaded but seem unable to stop the track...I can pause it but unable to stop it...please help me.
Thank GOD for you guys.

single touch the screen when a song is playing and some extra controls that let you pause/stop a song come up. it also shows a slider so you can drag your finger through a song to skip to the part you want to hear.
also, depending on how your iphone is configured, try pressing the home button twice (i.e the rounded square button). if you click that twice, quickly, you may see control come up that let you pause/stop a song.
check out the tutorials movies on the apple support site for lots of useful tips.

  • New to Mac and Safari, this may be a dumb question.

Hi guys. I just picked up a macbook yesterday and am coming from a pc. I just wanted to know if it is possible to make the safari window take up the whole screen. It seems by default to only take up a portion of it, and it makes viewing some pages difficult. How do you enlarge the windows? I can't figure it out on any app.

    Hi MacNewbie,
To resize windows on a Mac, you use the bottom right-hand corner of the window. There should be 3 lines like '///' there to indicate it is re-sizable.
You can also click the green button in the title bar. This is a bit like the Zoom button in Windows - there difference is that it will maximise the window to the largest size needed to display the information, which may be smaller than fullscreen.
Hope you're enjoying the MacBook and feel free to ask any more questions.

  • This may be a dumb question but is there an upgrade to RH 9 for Word?

We bought RH for windows in 2012.  It came with the HTML version 9 and Robo Help for Word 8...which must have been upgraded in the background to RH 9 for Word, because that is what is now showing in "About RoboHelp" and that is not what was originally showing.  Is there a RH for Word 10?  We have two projects that will not convert nicely to HTML, lost a ton of external links, so for those I have to stick to RH for Word.  If there is a 10 we might be interested in getting so I can use Word 10.

Rh9 did not ship with Rh for Word 8. The numbers have always matched.
Rh9 shipped with RoboHelp for Word 9. Rh10 shipped with RoboHelp for Word 10. Those numbers relate to the Rh version by the way so it's not clear what you mean when you refer at the end to Word 10. Do you mean Word 2010.
There were very few changes other than Word version compatability.
As Rh11 stopped shipping with RoboHelp for Word, you may have to bite the bullet and find out why the external links break. I wonder if creating a CHM from RoboHelp for Word and then reverse engineering that into Rh HTML might work? See Reverse Engineering on my site.

  • I have Safari 5.1.10 and want to get the newer version.  This may be a dumb question, but do I have to pay to get an upgrade, or is this just a software update.  I am not very technical.  Please advise!

I have a Mac OS X, version 10.6.8, and I am using safari 5.1.10.  I think I need to get a newer version of Safari if this is possible.
How do I go about doing this?  Do I have to purchase a different "safari" product?
I'm obviously not very technical, and don't know how to proceed!  The reason I want to change this is because
I keep getting messages saying that my web brower (isn't that what safari is?) is out of date.  Please advise!

For you it requires an upgrade of OS X. Since you have 10.6.8 installed you can upgrade directly to Yosemite for free provided your hardware meets the requirements:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Now there is an issue on Apple's server that seems to keep users with 10.6.8 from downloading Yosemite. Apple is working on the problem, so be patient and keep trying

  • This may be a dumb question but...

I need some help. I have just about filled my hard drive on my computer up. I have an external hard drive that I would like to put iTunes and all of my music "stuff" on. However, I can not for the life of me figure out how to do this. Can someone please explain how to do it. And hopefully pretty basically because I am good with computers but not the best!
    Thank you for your help!

hey maybe you can try consolidating your library...first to your pc and then to your external...u can find that in the itunes menu..
    hope this will work
    good luck!

  • Might be a dumb question, but I am moving from 1st gen to iPadair; on Safari, 1st gen to delete apps/sites just visited, you could double tap home key and apps would appear on bottom and one could delete from there. How does it work on ipadair?

This may be a dumb question, but nonetheless, here goes:
I just moved from 1st gen ipad to new ipad-air. Great and happy! But, one thing I can't figure out how to do is to delete the pages/sites/apps that I have just used? For example, on the 1st gen. you could double-tap home button and past actions would come up on bottom of screen. I could then delete them one by one, to keep things cleaned up. Am I missing something here? Does it keep a log irregardless? Not the same as deleting history - at least didnt' work for me.

Close apps and not delete apps.
    1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
    2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
    3. The app will fly off the screen

  • HT4437 this may seem like a dumb question, but do you always have to have wifi on to play music using airplay through the tv

This may seem like a dumb question, but once you have set up airplay from the ipad through the tv do you always need to have the internet on.

It's not necessary to have an internet connection in order to AirPlay content to the Apple TV unless the content is protected. You will however need to keep your wifi network turned on.

  • This may seem like a dumb question, but

How do I keep my hard drive from filling up with junk? I just purchased a new 13" MBA with 256 GB. My old MBP eventually got bogged down with so many duplicate files and applications and just plain junk. I was never sure what could be safely deleted.
I guess my real question is how do I know what is safe to delete, which things are duplicates and can I delete a disk image after I install something? Also, how do I know if I've completely deleted an application that I no longer want (i.e. any hidden files or whatever). I want to keep my new MBA as clean as I can and not load up my hard drive space with anything unneccessary.
    Thanks!

    not a dumb question
just be proactive about where everything is saved to and backup important things via external USB HD
Clear out itunes often of duplicate unwanted things, keep a folder or two on your desktop or otherwise to keep most of your working files.
If you drop an unwanted APP to the trash and delete same, its gone unless is a sys. modification application.
Keep your pictures in a known file or two. Same goes for documents, music, and videos.
frequently clear out your browswer of cookies, cache.
Buy a APP on the APP STORE that locates all duplicate files.  It lets you choose to delete them or not.
    such as:
    http://macpaw.com/gemini
    there are many such apps.

  • My ipad mail is synced to my iMac mail account. On iPad, I can only see my inbox and sent messages. I can't see any of the folders I have created on my iMac. How do I do that? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there!

My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

  • Weird, Maybe dumb question. My iMovie screen is gone

This may seem like a dumb question, but it has rendered my iMovie useless. Somehow, my iMovie screen got minimized and I can't see it. et me explain. I open iMovie, the menu bar is there. If I select an opion such as show fonts, or open new project, I get the menu screens for that. However, I don't see the workspace. I have ried playing aound with expose or spaces as it seems iMovie is hidden somewhere, but nothing seems to work to get it back. I tried recovering an older version, but that didn-t work.
thanks for any help you cn provide.

All I can suggest is the standard troubleshooting steps in order.
Restart your iPod: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset your iPod: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Restore your iPod: Restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Make an appointment to have an Apple Genius look at your iPod. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • Where do I enable HTML view for Mozilla Firefox. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

No answer that I have found online has been any help to me!

It's not a dumb question, but I have a follow-up: is the problem that Firefox is presenting pages with little or no stylization, looking mostly like text with some random images instead of having their usual layout?
Does the problem affect secure sites (address starts with HTTPS instead of HTTP)?
If so, there may be a problem with how Firefox is set up to work with secure sites. Because many popular websites combine content from multiple servers, if you made a security exception for a site, that may not get you all the elements of the page, such as style rules.
More detail if it's relevant. If this is off track, could you describe the problem in more detail?

  • Maybe a dumb question, about which power connectors to use, but....

This may sound like an incredibly dumb question, but here goes anyway....
I upgraded my system a few weeks ago, and will be slapping in a new ATI X850 Pro AGP card in a few days.  My current graphics card is a p.o.s. Radeon 9550, so it doesn't have its own power connector or even a fan.  My PSU is a dual-rail Antec model, and I'm wondering if it should matter any about how many or which devices I have connected to each power cable set.  My psu came with cables to attach, only 2 of the 4 though are the 4-pin molex - the other 2 are pci-e power connectors I believe.  Should it make a difference which or how many devices I connect to each cable?  For ease of plugging in, I believe my DVDRW and CDRom are using 1 cable, and my ide drive and floppy are using the other cable. Also, I have a pci fan and a case fan running off 1 or the other.  I'm likely to jump the power cable for the video card off the one the hard drive is using, unless someone has some suggestion to offer to the contrary.
If it makes a difference, can anyone recommend how they would have them connect?
My list of devices to plug in would be:
    1)IDE HDD
    2)Floppy
    3)CDRom
    4)DVDRW
    5)Case Fan
    6)PCI Fan
    7)Video Card
Thanks for any thoughts!  SAB - you seem to be the man on builds.....any ideas?

Well, I put the new card in and connected it on a cable with the optical drives.  Also, I had unwittingly connected my cdrom on the same ide channel as my hdd    , so I changed that so both optical drives are on the secondary ide.
So far, so good.  3dMark03 jumped up from 3300 with an overclocked Radeon 9550 to 10570 with the stock Radeon 850 Pro
I wish I could find some local source to purchase additional molex cords for my Antec SmartPower 2.0 psu, though - I've got 2 more 'outlets' just sitting there on the psu doing nothing, because the other cables are for pci-e, and I'm not using pci-e......  If I could buy some additional molex cables to plug in like the ones that came with it, I could have the vid card on its own cable....

  • A dumb question about wifi...

I'm not as 'literate' as some are when it comes to computer technology...but here is the question...If I walk into a place that has wifi and my iphone is set with wifi ON, how will I know if there is a charge for using the wifi? Will my iphone automatically kick into the wifi or will there appear an invitation to pay a fee to connect...and how do you pay and do you have to have a password and if so, how do you get that? I know....dumb question...Thanks.

Not a dumb question at all.
First of all, set your iPhone up like this:
    1) Go to Settings on the main screen (looks like gears)
    2) Click on "Wi-Fi" (second option from the top)
    3) At the bottom of this page (Which should say "Wi-Fi Networks" at the top) turn "Ask to Join Networks" to the "ON" position.
Now when you walk into a place that has Wi-Fi, your iPhone will display a little window that asks you whether you want to join the network or not.
In some places, you may even see a list of more than one Wi-Fi network to join. This is quite common in New York City. The reason is because so many people have Wi-Fi in there apartments, and they all live so close together, that sometime your iPhone can detect multiple networks. The coffee shop near my apartment has their own network, but I can also connect to the Wi-Fi network in my apartment because I only live about 50 feet away.
Anyway, when you see the list of Networks to join, you may notice a little padlock symbol next to some of them. This means these are closed networks that require a password to connect to. (My network is "Closed", ie requires a password so that everyone in the coffee shop next door doesn't use my internet).
Networks that DO NOT have the little lock symbol are "Open" which means you can join them without a password. But there is a catch... A lot of coffee shops have open networks, but as soon as you try to browse the web, they redirect your browser to their own page, no matter what web address you enter. Basically, they are letting you connect to their network without a password, but not letting you browse the internet without giving them some money.
So (as the previous poster said) the page that the coffee shops redirects you to, usually has instructions, and of course a place to put in a credit card. Once you do all that, then you can browse the internet without getting redirected to their little payment page. Its sort of confusing because you don't need a password to connect to their "open" network, but you do need one to browse any web pages. How you get the password differs from coffee shop to coffee shop, but usually they give it to you right inside your web browser once you give them your credit card number.
T-Mobile provides wireless for Starbucks (at least in a lot of places they do). So once you have an account with t-mobile, you can use it in any starbucks or "T-mobile hotspot"
Now this all sounds kind of complicated, but more and more these days, you can just walk into a place, find an open network (one without a lock next to it) and start browsing without being redirected or dealing with credit cards. Basically these places are providing free internet to try to attract customers.
    Good luck
P.S. Wi-Fi eats up battery life. If you aren't going to be using it to browse web pages, you can go into settings, then Wi-Fi, and turn Wi-Fi off. This will save you battery life, but you have to remember to turn it back on. Even without Wi-Fi on, you can still browse the internet if you see a little "E" at the top of your screen. The E stands for the AT&Ts Edge network, which isn't as fast as Wi-Fi, but covers pretty much everywhere that your phone can get a signal.

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Dumb question re video card

I bought a radeon 9800 pro graphics card to upgrade my 64mb. stock card and before installing noticed that the new card has one DVI port and one VGA port. the box says it runs dual displays, right now I have dual CRTs running but want to run two flat panels soon.
so the dumb question, can I convert the VGA to DVI with just a cheap adapter and run dual flats without buying an expensive converter for the second VGA port?

    Hi Prankster,
you wont be able to get dual digital support from the 9800 ...sorry.
Of course, you might be able to *physically connect* two digital flat panels to the card but one of the monitor connectors will be recieving an analog video input signal from this graphic card.
To get true dual digital support from ATI you would need the 9600 or 9700 Pro graphic cards.
    Hope this helps !
    Cheers,
    Chris Chamberlain
