I recently purchased 4 Mac Pro's for our graphics department. Our network infrastructure in all Windows Server 2003 with Active Directory.
When setting up the mac pro's I did NOT use the directory utility. What are the benefits of using the directory utility and connecting to my active directory domain? The users that have the mac pro's do not have any group policies, so other then that, is there any reason why i should set them up in directory utility?
Now for the thing that I need help with ASAP. Connecting to our file servers. Currently I have the users using the side bad in Leopard to connect to our file server, and they are 'connecting as' there username in which they are set up with in active directory (old windows login), and everything connects fine, though does cause some frustration at times where we will be connected yet none of the folders are there. We have to disconnect, and reconnect. I want the users to be able to access the file server without having to log in. I know I can save the login info to the keychain, but for secure reasons, I prefer not to do that. If I use directory utility, and set there user up and have them login using there active directory credentials, will that allow them to connect to the file server without using the connect as option? And apart of this, how can have the file server connect at login?

The problem that you are having with the file servers access is the very reason you would want to setup active directory integration. The users will use Single-sign-on to access the servers and will login to the Mac Pro's using their AD credentials this will prevent you from storing the credentials in a keychain as well as provided transparent access to resources.
As for your auto-connect at login, since these are Mac Pro's you should not need any i then statements because they are not laptops. Hope this helps some.

Okay so I have netgear and my laptop is getting NAT:Moderate and I would like to switch it to open. Now I drop sometimes that is why I want to open my port. I put the netgear router on dmz on the fios but it's still not getting opened. I even portforwarded on both the routers and its not open. Can't advise you on how to port forward the Netgear. Check the manufacturer's documention.

If Netgear is primary, why are you even trying to port forward the Actiontec?
How are the routers connected? LAN-to-WAN or LAN-to-LAN?

How did a folder named just "Adobe", containing only something called "Acrobat.com.app"), end up in my root Applications folder?
Double clicking on "Acrobat.com.app" launches an installer that wants to install something called "AIR". What is that and what is it needed for?
What forum should I be posting this in?
A global search and searches in the Acrobat Macintosh forum were not helpful.
Can I just delete that Adobe folder or ignore it? It has identical Creation and Modified dates of January 15, 2010 17:56, which raises more questions than it answers.
Any input will be appreciated.

Maybe… kinda, sorta… There are no ".exe" files in the Mac world.
I've never downloaded or installed either Acrobat.com or Adobe AIR. It has to have been the Acrobat Reader 9.3 update for the Mac that installed that sucker on my Mac. I had certainly never seen it before.
That, on top of the inexcusable, abominably surreptitious "Growl" installed by Adobe behind my back, strengthens my resolve not to acquire any more Adobe products, free or otherwise.
What in blazes are the Adobe corporate folks thinking?

I sounds like you have formated the cell to an automatic date format.
Select the cell, choose Format->Cells, select the Numbers tab and select "General" under Category. Click OK.
That should do it.

I've decided that I'm going to develop my Rails applications in Linux and keep hitting a BRICK WALL every time I try to install NetBeans or Java. I download all of the packages and come to a text screen that says "Package Configuration" and then "Configuring sun-java5-bin" and then it asks you to read the agreement and there's an <Ok> at the bottom. I can't get through this and everytime it fails my 'package manager' goes bonkers and I have to reload the Ubuntu Gutys Gibbon operating system AGAIN!!!
I push ENTER and type in "yes" and "Ok" and there is no response.
I've loaded this operating system FIVE TIMES NOW and the bottleneck is very frustrating as I can't program in a graphics environment without Java.

Do you really mean the Nikon D60 which shipped in 2008? Was it purchased secondhand?
The Nikon D60 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 4.4.
Photoshop CS4 ships with Camera Raw 5.0 so it can read D60 NEF files out of the box. No updates required.
If you do mean the D60 then something else must be going on. e.g. are you using Nikon software to transfer files from camera to computer?

Ok, so I just went to Australia from NZ and the same thing happened to me. I was so annoyed as I couldn't text, ring or anything. I returned to NZ this morning, rang telecom and they said it's a hardware issue and talked me through this:
Settings, Phone, SIM applications, roaming menu, manual, select your provider, accept.
Go through each stage and this fixed the problem!!

I am using a MacBook Pro and when I open a new tab in Firefox it opens to Trovi. Mozilla has a forum but solutions are all for the PC/Windows. How do I remove it?

I am using a OSX MacBook Pro running Mavericks version 10.9.4 and using Firefox 30.0. My Mac has recently been hijacked by a program called "Trovi". Whenever I open a blank new tab in Firefox the tab opens it opens with Trovi. The Mozilla forums offer support but all solutions are for users who run Windows. How do I remove Trovi from my Mac? Please help.

I'm an ancient Solaris sysadm (like Solaris 6, long, long ago) who is trying out OpenSolaris on a T42 laptop. I registered under the OpenSolaris forum but alas, I can't login and the support people haven't fixed my problem, yet. Instead, they set me up for the reg Sun forums, so here I am. ??
My problem:
Can't get my cheapo Samsung ML-1740 to print using the print manager. Says it's ready to fly, but nothing pops out. I'm assuming it's a driver issue. Went to the HCL pages and the laptop was listed as compatible, but the printer isn't confirmed as compatible for OpenS., so I'm assuming my printer will never work under OpenS. All I can find out on the Web is a driver for LINUX. Im assuming that a LINUX driver won't work under OpenSolaris...
Any suggestions before I end up trying Ubuntu instead? (I'm doing all of this in Live CD; don't see any reason why it shouldn't work other than a poss driver issue.)

OK, back to basics:
1.) The Samsung is NOT a PostScript NOR a Network printer (see for example the User Manual at: http://www.samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=06010400&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=ML-1740), so two topics:
a.) How did you connect it: Parallel? USB?
b.) What do you want to print? PostScript? Then you need a rendering engine (that's, why I did propose CUPS, because that makes things easier to setup, BUT: it's not feasable in the LiveCD!)
To check with 1.) a.): (In case of USB connection): What does "cfgadm" list? Is there a USB Printer listed somewhere? I've not yet done it myself, so can't provide examples of the output... ;-( And: What does "prtconf -D" provide? It should also somehow list the usbprn driver... Also "modinfo|grep usb" should list the usbprn driver...
If connected via parallel, you might need to enable or "free" the parallel port... Never done that myself, so also sadly no examples here...
b.) Now you need to "drive the SLP language" of the printer. Because I assume, you do not want to print plain ASCII... ;-) That's why I guess, that CUPS et.al. might come in handy here... And the CUPS GUI (BUI) also manages all the other config steps. But, sadly, as mentioned, you need to install CUPS as described above, and that's not feasable on the LiveCD... I also doubt, that ghostscript et.al. are available directly from the LiveCD, so the only thing that you might achieve from the LiveCD is printing a plain ASCII page...
So, can you see "some kind of action" on the printer after you spooled the file? (aka: Does the communication to the printer work? Or can you see error messages in /var/adm/messages?)

Unable to restore from Time Machine after an erase and reinstall - MacbookPro cannot access my old Time Machine backup volume. Desperate for help please?

My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours. After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue. After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant. Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.

Desperate for help ... Getting error "can't initialize video deck"

Last night, I had been importing footage just fine into Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 from my camcorder. Then today, no matter how many times I try, how many times I reboot, I get the error that it cannot initialize the video deck when I try to Log and Capture the footage. I've read a number of the solutions to other people having this problem, I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, try unplugging the power and FireWire cable completely, to no avail. Before this, it had been kind of "buggy" in the last few days trying to capture footage, but usually would connect just fine after I would turn off the camera and turn it back on. But today nothing ... I haven't installed or done anything to this system in months, and like I said, I've imported 24 tapes up to now with only a couple of slight times where it couldn't load initially, but usually did on the second try. Could something be conflicting on my system? I have an external hard drive connected to the system which I use for my capture scratch disk, and if I boot up the system with my camcorder turned on, my external hard drive is not recognized. But once I turn the camcorder off, my external hard drive pops right up. Same kind of issue when opening Final Cut Pro ... if I try to open FCP with my camcorder turned on, it hangs on the little rainbow circle. But the second I turn off the camcorder, Final Cut loads just fine. I am really desperate for a solution on this one, I'm way behind on a project, and only have 7 more tapes to go. By the way, I'm on a Power Mac G5.

Before I go into the firewire port reset procedure there are two things you should understand.
1. Paragraphs are not optional. Your English teacher should give you a dope slap for the way you wrote your original post.
2. When you reply to a Post, click REPLY ON THAT POST not on your original post. Otherwise, when you view this thread in 'Threaded View" (to be found under My Settings), it looks like you are talking to yourself.
Now, to reset the firewire bus. I like to do this in a recreational manner - hence the 'Harpoon Solution" (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)
1. turn everything off.
2. unplug firewire cables
3. unplug power cords
4. get up from well worn chair
5. walk to refrigerator
6. open refrigerator
7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
8. pop cap
9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
12. Plug everything back together
12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.
Does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.

Forgive the slight mis-placement but.. I'm looking to move my Mail from my desktop Mac Pro to my Macbook Pro! Can anybody advise the best method that will maintain the current email archive and listings, thus being no change whatsoever once moved to the Macbook?

Not sure what you are talking about? If the post, which I did not see, was posted in this forum (Mail and Address Book) then it was the correct forum. Your saying there was no forum for Apple Mail would probably have not helped get a reply.
The correct and simplest method to move is to transplant both the com.apple.mail.plist file from Home/Library/Preferences and the Mail folder from Home/Library from the one Mac to the other.

Not sure where to post this, but need Mac specific help for Excel for Mac. Is there a way to compare the formulas in 2 excel workbooks? I am looking for an easy and rather automated way to do this. I have seen free add ins for PC's that do this, but none for excel mac users...
One workbook is correct as far as formulas, but has outdated data. The other workbook has the correct data, but I need to check to make sure the formulas are accurate and functioning...

The only way I see of doing this is opening Excel Tools/Visual Basic Editor and create a visual basic script that compares workbook1 to workbook2.
My VB scripting is novice at best but this would be the more flexible way of comparing formulas between two sheets.
I would go to microsoft.com (dare I recommend!) and go to their community forums then go to Excel Programming and ask how this can be done in VB.
