May I open word documents on pages?

I would like to know if i can open and format Word windows documents on pages?

EIther Pages ’09 v4.n or the latest Pages v5.0.1 can open MS Word documents and templates. Pages is not an MS Word clone, and there may be functionality that you apply to the document in Pages, that may not accurately export back out to MS Word document formats.
The older version of Pages could export to .doc format. The latest version can export to .doc and docx formats. There is .rtf support in the older Pages, but not in the latest, though TextEdit can open and export all of these formats.
If you need precise, round-trip, MS Word compatibility, then I would recommend using Office for Mac 2011.

• Can't open word documents in Pages since updating to Yosemite

Since updating my software to Yosemite I cannot open word documents in pages anymore. I can open these word documents in preview to at least look at them, but this is not very helpful.
Also, is anyone else experiencing a serious slow down. My Macbook is choking, and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to improve the speed.
Thanks in advance for any insight/ support you can offer!

Be sure you are saving your Word documents on the PC for a Word version supported by Office 2004 X. The latest version of Office for the PC uses a file format that is no longer compatible with older versions of Office.
PC attachments have icons that do not carry any information that Mac applications use to determine what application opens a document. Drag the document from the email application to the Desktop. Select the icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the section labeled 'Open with' select Word from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button. This should associate all similar documents to the Word application on the Mac. Word documents on the Mac also use the '.doc' extension. If the transferred file does not have the '.doc' extension then it doesn't hurt to add one.

• Can't open word document in pages

Word document attached to email loading ca. 70% in Pages then pages closes down and can't get to open. Ideas?

Open the email with the attached Word document again. Then tap on the attached document. A menu will appear. Tap on the option that says "Open in Pages. If this doesn't work, try shutting off your iPad and then wait a minute or two and then turn it back on. Try to open the Word document again. Although I'm just speculating becuase, I have never had a problem opening a Word document in Pages and every time I open a Microsoft Word document in Pages, it just needs to change the font to a Pages- compatible font. I hope my solution works, and I'm sorry if it doesn't work.

• How do I open Word documents in Pages?

I'm new to Mac and I'm having trouble opening my Word documents in Pages.
When I tried opening one of my documents ending in .doc it gives me this error message : import error the file format is invalid.
When then tried a document ending in .docx import error : an unknown error occurred.
The documents I tried to open are documents I made recently on my PC so they should not be corrupted.
Could someone help me.

Try saving these documents from your PC in an older format. It could be that you have features in your version of Word that are confusing Pages.

What version of Pages are you using? You may need to run Software Update (from the  menu).

• Big problem in opening word documents in Pages (iWork) ipad

Hi I study in UNI so I mostly have to open .doc documents from my Uni website but 95% times the .doc files doesn't open properly sometimes even half of the file stuff is just missing even using pages app from iWork. Any suggestion ?. Or ipad is t a waste of money for Uni stuff ?.? I have also tried other apps from App Store but none of them works properly.

I would never recommend an iPad for any serious Uni education. You must have a laptop or other machine that can run things like MS Word most likely being used by the people grading your work. Even for secondary education an iPad is very limiting in my view.

• How do i open word documents in pages '09?

I recently wrote a part of an essay on my Toshiba laptop which is running windows vista 64 bit OS, i wrote the part of the essay using Microsoft word 2003. when i got home i was hoping that i could finish it using pages '09 on my iMac, but it couldn't open and when i tried opening it in text editor it appeared in a really strange looking language, definitely not english! so i was wondering if it was possible to open it up in pages, instead of having to purchase another 150$ program,
Thanks
Mack

No. This is what the Pages User Guide, downloadable from Apple, says:
+You can create a new Pages document by importing a document created in another application, such as Microsoft Office 2007 or AppleWorks. Pages can import the following file formats: plain text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf and .rtfd), AppleWorks 6 word processing (.cwk), and Microsoft Word (.doc).+
What is .wpd by the way?? A new format of some kind?

• Why can I open Word documents with Pages but can't open Pages documents with Pages? Oh, that's right, I have to PAY EVERY TIME I TURN AROUND

Sorry, this just upsets me.

Heaven knows what you are talking about.
I suppose you might, but probably don't, which is why you are huffing and puffing.
Probably this is about Pages '08 not opening the later Pages '09. Given that Pages '09 introduced many features that Pages '08 didn't have, it is not too surprising.
Remind me what it costs to buy Pages '09 from the M.A.S. to use on as many computers as you want.
Also remind me what it costs for Ms Word, or even lunch. I'm sure you have blown more on a whim than you ever will on something as useful as Pages.

• Can't open a Word document in Pages '09

Alright...I have tried to search the forum to see if someone is having the same problem but I haven't seen any. I cannot open a word document in pages. at all. Just says "The document “filename.doc” couldn’t be opened."
Any suggestions?

This was one of the first symptoms of "un-updated" Pages in Snow Leopard. Once again, here are the two things you may not have done that fix quite a few problems in Snow Leopard.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.3 combo updater. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.3 & Numbers 2.0.3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

• Opening a Word Document in Pages - floating objects not supported

I am trying to open a Word document in pages. It is a table of labels with artwork and text. Pages tells me that floating objects inside cells are not supported and were deleted. I've tried making them inline with text in the original document and then opening in Pages, but then I can't make them floating again. Anyone know how to do this? I really don't want to have to buy a Microsoft product!

Don't buy a M…soft product, use the free openOffice or the free neoOffice.

• Setting Pages '08 as my default program to open word documents

I need to figure out how to make Pages the default software for opening Word documents. Right now when I go to open them I have to move them from my email to my desktop and then open Pages and say open an existing document. Is there anyway to set it so that I can just click on the document and it automatically knows to open in Pages?
Thanks

Velmy,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You can set .doc files to open in Pages, and it’'s surprisingly easy: just go to the Finder, single-click on any .doc file, then type command-I (Get Info). Click on the Open With... menu and select Pages (or navigate to Pages if it’’'s not in the menu). To make all .doc files open in Pages, click on the Change All button. Now, when you double-click on one of these files, it will open in Pages.

• Pages '09 won't open Word documents since installing Lion

Since installing Lion I can no longer open Word documents. I get the following window
My intel iMac is just a year old and all software is current, both Lion and Pages. If I transfer the word documents to my 4 year old Macbook running the same Pages and Snow Leopard the files open as they should. Can anyone suggest a solution. I would be very grateful. Thanks.

That's what I have done, but then I am a long term Apple user and wised up years ago.

That does sound like you are simply double clicking on the exported .doc file which will open Word.
Try dragging it onto Pages or right mouse clicking > Open with…
I installed Lion on an external Hard Drive so I could still get my work done in Snow Leopard.

• Opening Word Doc. in Pages - Edit remarks in margin from a word document

I imported a word document into Pages that has edit comments in the margins. When I print the page the content is reduced to about 25%!! I end up with a page with my document, at 25%, centered on a page of white. I looked everywhere and can't seem to find a window or button that would allow me to override or adjust this issue. Any thoughts... I'm sure it's obvious and I'm just missing it.

grafx,
The only way to "fix" this is to shut off Comments. This was a terrible problem in pre-'08 versions, and has been only partially fixed in '08.

• I cannot simply open Word documents. I am forced to save them in order to view them.

In firefox, IE, and chrome, I try to open Word documents and am forced to save them in order to view them. I do not get the box that asks whether I want to save or open (and yes, I have the option to always ask checked in my settings). When I find the document in my folders, it tells me I'm in protected view when viewing my documents. This has only started recently. The only thing new I've done to the computer recently is update firefox. However, this problem is occurring in all my browsers.
(I do not have this problem opening other files, like PDF. I still get the option to open or save with files other than Word documents.)
I have run my Sophos antivirus and have found nothing. I have suspected rookit, but hope it is less serious.
I also do not wish to download any new programs in order to fix this problem.
Thank you!

Try upgrading to the most recent version of Firefox.
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
Please report back soon.
So you don't receive any popup window asking you to save or view the document? The download just begins all by itself.
NOTE: Even if you select to only view the document, since Firefox has no built in Word viewer, you'll end up downloading it anyway. The only difference is that it will be downloaded into the temporary memory of your computer.
