Maybe a bit OT - all those old, think printed manuals

I just cleaned out a closet down in the edit suite and lo-and-behold I found old boxes of Final Cut discs and manuals dating all the way back to Final Cut Pro version 2.... and that includes DVD Studio Pro and Motion and Soundtrack when it was called Soundtrack, and printed pdf manuals for Livetype and Cinematools.. and stand along Cinematools box! And even the software Cinematools came from: Film Logic.. or maybe Slingshot. They are both in there, I can't reember which Apple turned into Cinematools. I think I'll fill up a garbage can.
What does everyone else do with those big boxes of thick printed manuals? Come to think of it maybe I should recycle them.

Being the pack rat I am, we have a whole storage room filled with obsolete software, manuals, boards, digitizer pads, plotters and so on. Occassionally I'll drag the most hapless equipment out and let the art students disassemble them for useful elements in their constructions. Recycling can be fun and artful.
cheers,

  • An unhealthy attachment to all my old Logic boxes/manuals

So having just moved out of a house (don't ask), and having to put stuff into storage, I've come up against an amusing/geeky dilema...
I have every single Logic upgrade box and manual from version 2.5 kicking around and they take up a lot of room!
Those of you unfamiliar with the old Emagic boxes/manuals might not realise the significance, but they resembled a phone book with padded faux leather covers! Not to mention the floppy discs...
Anyway, wandering what to do with them as I really can't hang onto them forever... maybe keep the boxes and flatten them and keep the main discs (version 5 maybe) etc. But the history is so interesting and I feel weirdly attached to them!
What has everyone else done with them? Thrown them away like normal people I guess...

Man, no kidding... after reading these posts, (especially yours JJ) I agree.
Now, I do see a problem with this. It is like getting rid of old college/university textbooks (or papers). These are items that got you to a degree- very hard to just toss (or what is the value of an education). The same with the software- it has brought you to where you are now. You may think you are just cleaning house- but are you really throwing away a tool that was part of getting you to today? I miss my old Dr. T's notation program and manual (plus my original Cakewalk for DOS and Finale- man- Finale was a huge box with big manuals).
You should really take some time to evaluate if this is part of your historical toolchest (or just extra junk).
    Just my thoughts.
My old college music theory workbooks reside in a footlocker in my storage shed.
Dr'T's notation? You must mean... "The Copyist".
A working version still resides on an Amiga 3000 I kept.
JJ, You hit it square, part of it is a shared history with these objects.. also because I feel they were part of an education, I learned a lot from working with software that would be considered inferior by today's, even yesterday's standards. I may take some of iSchwartz's advice and detach a bit, then again....

  • What is the best scanner with an ADF for importing all my old color prints?

Have just completed the gargantuan task of scanning all my old slides using a Nikon Coolscan 5000 with bulk slide feeder - great scanner.
Was going to use the machine to bring in my old negs, but it will take far too long. Have decided to try and do the job using a good flat bed scanner with an Automatic Document Feeder. i.e. load about 30 to 50 4x6's etc. and walk away. Come back and all the jpegs are neatly saved in a folder.
Am I dreaming? There has to be a product out there. HP have a 5890 but apparently it has bad reviews.
Anyone here with the experience. I cannot be re-inventing the wheel - this must be something that we all want to do at one time or another before we die!
All input (no pun intended) appreciated

    HI cuencaky,
Here is a link to a page with an example of good 4 X 6 photo paper you can use with your printer.
This type of paper is known to work very well.
If I helped you at all it would be great if you clicked the blue kudos star!
If I solved your post please mark it as solved to help others.

  • All those old iPod Software Updater files in my Utilities folder?

I notice that I've collected a series of "iPod Software (Version) Updater folders in my Utilities folders. (Same for iSight Updater) Do I need to keep those or can I trash them and recover some HD space?

This post should be under the Connecting to Mac forum.
Anyway, if you want you can remove them to recover HD space. But I suggest you keep at least one old version, just in case there are any problems.

I changed my Apple ID on iTunes and on the iPhone 4. When I try to "Update All" the old Apple ID shows up (I no longer have access to that email address). How do I update those apps?

Apps are DRM protected and tied to the account used to originally obtain them. They cannot be transferred to another iTunes account nor updated using another iTunes account. Only the account used to obtain them can be used to update them. You can contact iTunes support, explain the situation & ask that they add these apps to the download queue of your new account:

I had all my old home video's and super 8 movies converted to DVD's. Since I will move back to Europe I asked the company to convert them to PAl system. I just got all the DVD's for a lot of money, but I can not play any of them on my MAC book.(I think that is because they were burned on zone 1 dvd's and my lap top works with zone 2.
I wonder how I can make them work on my macbook..? I intended to start editing those movies so I need to be able to play them on my mac. Is there a way to copy them to zone 2 DVD's and or to zone 0 dvd's and where do I get those free zone or zone 1 recordable dvd's?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • How do I change or remove default apps for a given file extension (in Terminal?) without munging date modified on all my old files?

When a program is installed, it seems to be able to do it (sometimes inappropriately if it hijacks file associations without asking) so why can't I?  This is for 10.4.
    Specifically:
    1. Since installing an HP wireless printer, HP not only tries to install a bunch of sales-ware on your machine that you have to carefully opt out of (annoying, but not a problem if forewarned), it changes the default file association for a number of basic file types, listing all sort of existing files as HP printer files. Using Get Info to change the default file type association globally causes it to mark ALL the files of that type as newly updated, munging the file metdata (which HP did NOT do). Most of the stuff on our computer is sorted by last modified, so if there is a way to fix this in Terminal (to simply fix or remove the HP default tag) without changing the date the file was modified, it would help. Note that uninstalling the program that created the default would do this, but I obviously can't do that (and reinstalling HP would have the same effect). So there has to be another way, right?
    2. Since updating iTunes to v.9 a while back, every mp3 is marked as an iTunes file even though iTunes has NO multiple library capability without a wonky reboot using the option key, meaning that if I click on an mp3 downloaded since last update of iTunes, it opens automatically in iTunes and gets added to the SOLE itunes library without asking. (There is no way to toggle between multiple libraries or archive media in separate folders; iPhoto has a similar problem. (Has this been fixed in the latest version of iTunes?) In comparison, Quicktime starts up immediately and does not attempt to create a playlist just because you opened a file and listened to it.
(The iTunes playlists are simply subfolders of the single main library -- and you can't create a new library without doing a wonky procedure by clicking option during startup and telling iTunes to forget where its library is located (includin everything in it) and look up an entirely separate one by hand. So any mp3 file downloaded recently is uploaded to iTunes if you click on it. This wouldn't be problem if it didn't automatically add it to the sole iTunes library just because you clicked on it.)
Besides, all my old mp3s are Quicktime files and they are all archived by date modified. To its credit, ITunes, unlike HP, does NOT hijack older files already on disk and remark them as iTunes files. It only marks newly downloaded files as such.  But if I try and change file association for FUTURE mp3 files using Get Info > "use this program for all files of this type", it munges the file metadata (date modified) for all existing files!
Note that in HP case, it apparently does it at the file exchange preference level (or whatever it's called) since the OS then recognizes every file of those types as an HP file. In the iTunes case, it only does it if you download a new media file or open an existing file in iTunes, but again without changing the date it was last edited.
Since these programs are able to change the default file association without changing the date the file was last edited, it should be reversible in Terminal, correct?  Why does it change "date modified" when you try and correct metadata using Get Info (or sometimes just by clicking an enclosing folder?) Date modified should be a record of when a file itself was edited, not when it was renamed, or other metadata. Otherwise stuff can't be sorted correctly.

The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck

  • You don't need all those previews

Seriously! You really don't need all those previews.
I have an article up now on when you actually do need previews and how to make them when needed:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/
More on the mysteries of previews soon.

Well, I don't think it is correct that previews are
only used for slide shows. For example, previews are
used for on-screen display in a situation where you
store your master images on a separate volume and
this volume is offline. Previews can be extremely
useful if the storage capacity on your computer is
    limited (e.g laptop).
    MacBook Pro 15
      Mac OS X
    (10.4.7)
Of course, but that's not a situation I will deal with as I don't use a laptop. Also, you can make just those previews that you will need for a presentation. I don't (for my purposes, yours may differ) see a need to keep 20 or 30 thousand preview files on my hardrive. It certainly faster and more economical to kick out the 4 or 500 previews you may need for a presentation than maintaining a whole image library worth.
Also, though it would eventually finish, as the preview's were being generated it bogged down my machine and made Aperture function like it did in version 1.1.2, sticky sliders, beachballs etc. heck even with the previews this version was still much better than the last. W/O the prev. generation, my iMac G5 is like a brand new fast computer. The speed and functionally gain is night and day. Now maybe when it finished making the thousands of previews it was generating the speed-up would occur, I suspect it would. But all those previews, to me, are just a waste of resources.

While that may work9I do not think it will) with iTunes purchased music it will not work for other music.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you will need a third-party program like one of those discussed here.

  • How do I find Outlook identities with all my old emails and contacts?

I recently had to reinstall the OS on my 27" iMac due to the Mavericks update greyed the screen on start up. I went through all the proceedures with a senior Apple technician so that I now have the OS working fine. All the old data was saved onto another iMac 21" using a firewire cable before the OS reinstallation of the 27" iMac and then tranfered back after (all being taken step by step with the Apple tech). I have not been able to find the Oulook identities of the previous email account, therefore I have just set up a new one. I have been intyo Microsoft Utility Database and the only identity to choose from is the new one, obviously I have no contacts or my old emails. I do have a Time Machine back up from a couple of months prior to this happening if that is an option.
Can anyone help with this please?
    Many thanks

I have had a look in the time capsule.....bad news on that front, it is empty although it had been regualry updating every hour when it was connected previous (had a bit of a move around with both the office and home). This had happened before and Apple replaced the Time Capsule with a new one along with a new hardrive in the 27" iMac, I wonder if that same problem had not been resolved now seeing the Time Capsule has nothing backed up. My word this is frustrating, the hours I have spent on the phone with Apple tech and still having issues, anyway one thing at a time.
    Thanks for the help!

I have an IMAP mailbox that seems to only show mail 7 days on my iMac running Snow Leopard.  However, on my MacBook Pro I can see all old mail that I have not deleted.  It is running the next operating system (Lion?).  Does anyone know how I can get all my old mail back on my iMac.  It is my primary computer and I need some of those old messages.  I have tried to rebuild the mailbox but it has not done anything.

I have tried to rebuild the mailbox to no avail.  The mailbox behavior says:  Drafts (not checked) store draft messages on the server, Notes (checked) show not in Inbox, Sent (checked) Store sent messages on the server Delete sent messages when (option never selected), Junt (not checked) store junk messages on the server Delete junk messages when (option never selected), Trash (checked) moves deleted messages to the Trash mailbox and (checked)  store deleted messages on the server Permanently erase deleted messages when (one month old option selected).
I have not set up any rules that I know of other than a signature, in the very least I have not changed any.
