Maybe a silly question...are unoffical OS (leaks) safe/secure to use?

So maybe this is a silly question....I have been trying to downgrade my OS after my TMobile phone somehow downloaded an ATT update (10.2.1.3014) that wasn't supported by the Tmobile network and caused all sorts of problems with the device.
After extensive work with Blackberry Support, I am told there is no way to "officially" downgrade back to the Tmobile supported version (10.2.1.2228).
This leaves the files or "leaks" (if you want to call them that), that are available in the forums through the autoloaders. Obviously not knowing where those files came from, who posted them, or what, if any modifications have been made, I'm worried about security, malware, privacy, etc.
Are these things safe and secure to use just like an official OS would be? Is there anyway to verify?

The autoloaders have no malware or viruses... at least I haven`t heard about any of that. I have used Autoloaders before and the only thing I can suggest is to make sure you download the proper files (OS and radio files) for your phone. In any case case, make sure you do a backup.

CC and CC 2014 have really been irritating in just the fact that they exist. The individual application discussion boards (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) are filled with questions about "Creative Cloud" issues more than they are about the applications themselves. This is concerning.

I remember one time all my errors were supposedly caused by -- and yes, I'm serious about this one -- my language selection. I was foolish enough to have chosen the "English (North American)" option. Yes, I'm in Texas but even though I looked there was not an "English (Texan)" option so I went with the next logical choice. Wow, did't see that one coming.
To the point -- SHOULD I CHOSE THE "ENGLISH (INTERNATIONAL)" OPTION THIS TIME?
And more important, if yes, then WHY IS THERE AN "ENGLISH (NORTH AMERICAN)" OPTION TO BEGIN WITH? I can't see any Photoshop needing to be concerned with what I call a cookie, my British colleagues know as a biscuit. Does Illustrator really need a root level preference to determine between a "truck" or a "lorry". Has Dreamweaver become such a finely tuned program that it must know wether I left my things in the car's "trunk" or "boot"?
On a serious note, this is madness. Adobe - stop it already.

I travel a lot and I started iTunes on my desktop which is where I usually do all my downloads, purchases etc. I would like to be able to sync my iPod with my laptop iTunes so when I'm traveling I can get my Podcasts and books for the plane! Can I do that?

You can authorize multiple computers (Macintosh, Windows, or both) to play your iTunes Music Store purchases. You can also deauthorize a computer to prevent your music or spoken word purchases from being played on that computer, or to change which computers are authorized to play your purchases (you should do this if you sell your computer and want to listen to your purchases on a new computer). You can also deauthorize a computer to prevent playing Audible spoken word content downloaded from the Audible website.
To authorize or deauthorize a computer, your computer needs to be connected to the Internet.
To authorize a computer to play songs or spoken word content purchased from the iTunes Music Store, select the item (in your library or the Purchases playlist), and click the Play button.
If the computer is already authorized to play songs purchased using your account, the song plays.
If the computer has not yet been authorized to play songs purchased using your account, you're asked to enter your ID and password. Enter the ID and password for the account with which the song was purchased.
If you've already authorized five other computers to play your music purchases, you won't be able to play the songs on this computer until you deauthorize one of the already authorized computers.

Maybe a silly question... (size of project folder)

I have a small problem using xcode 4.
My project folder was about 30mb and I added some pictures to my project. After that it was aprox 110mb ( + 80mb).
Later in xcode I deleted the pictures again (remove incl references) and they were gone, as it should. But the size of the project folder stays the same 110mb !
I tried to delete everything in the folder, but even when the folder is EMPTY, it stays at this 80mb (size of the deleted pics), which I deleted from xcode. I know there are some hidden files but - why are they there, can I delete them and how I can delete them?

When I empty the project folder, the project is wiped out - this is correct. The folder then is empty, but OSX shows, the content of the folder (which is gone) has still a size of 80MB! So theres "nothing" with size of 80MB! Pure Magic! Interesting news for all scientists: "nothing" has the size of exactly 80MB.
I tried another thing: made a new folder, copied the project stuff there (the "visible" stuff was about 18MB only!) and take this as new project folder. XCode made some new indices upon first opening of the project and then it worked. The project-folder now is exactly as big, as the sum of all files into it, which is 18MB.

You do not need third party software to do this. Follow these directions.
Go into *System Preferences* and choose International. Now pick *Input Menu* and check the box for *Character Palette* and *Keyboard Viewer*. At the bottom of that window choose *Show Input Menu in menu bar.* A little flag will pop up on the bar. Use this to open the pallette. I have mine to view all characters. Under Symbols choose *Numbers and Number Symbols*. This will let you choose what you need. This is a very handy thing to have so I suggest exploring it to see what all you can do with it.

ATI Radeon X1900 model designation - a silly question

Hi all,
I guess I reserved a silly question for for my very first discussions post!
I have a Feb 2007 vintage 2.66 Mac Pro with the ATI X1900 graphics card. When I ran software update on this machine today, it ignored the ATI X1900 XT firmware update recently posted by Apple. Upon querying my card in system profiler, I see it listed as simply "ATY,RadeonX1900"–no XT at the end. Also, both the "ATY" and the lack of a space after the comma are not typos on my part-that's exactly how they appear in system profiler-weird. It listed the device ID as: 0x1002.
Is the "XT" a more recent model of the X1900 series? I queried my serial number on Apple's specification page, and it said I should have a X1900 XT, but I suspect Apple updates these on the fly.
I really want to keep my drivers and firmware up to date, but I certainly don't want try to install an incorrect firmware update-yikes. Should I trust software update or should I manually download this update from Apple's site and install it?

I'll go back and read the posts concerning this update. Having gone through the G4 "leaf blower" fan noise ordeal, I don't want to make my blissfully quiet MacPro any louder (and neither do my office mates).
I work in 3-D modelling and architectural graphics, and I've stepped up to the big display/high end graphics card world at the same time as my applications (formZ, SketchUp, Lightwave, CS3) are rewriting their software for Intel Macs. A few minor, but annoying, issues persist, and I was naivley hoping a simple firmware update would be the silver bullet. Yeah, right.
Maybe I'm just "pre-registering" my anxiety over Leopard...

2 silly questions what is boot camp and do I need it? & How to transfer PC

Okay, I've just ordered my first mac it's a 17" 1.83 refurb iMac, I've noticed a lot of stuff about boot camp, what is it? Does it allow me to transfer my old pc files to my Imac? The only files I will be transfering are pictures and music files can anyone tell me how easy or hard this will be, Thanks again

There are no silly questions.
Boot Camp (which is still a beta until Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' comes out) allows you to boot your Intel-based Mac in either Windows XP or Mac OS X. It will make an extra partition on your internal hard drive on which you can install WinXP SP2.
To transfer you PC files onto your Mac you will not need Boot Camp. There are several ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest is to burn you files on a CD-R or DVD-R and insert the disc into your Mac.
For your music files: start iTunes and import all music files from your CD/DVD (File menu > Import).
For your pics: start iPhoto and import all your pictures from the CD/DVD (File menu > Import in Library). iPhoto is really the best way to keep track of all your current and future pics and share them with anyone.

Silly Questions - Upload Speed & Hardware

Hi tere network people,
Networking ignorant here in need of your help.
I'm using a PowerMac G4 as a server and I have a PHP website going to share some pics with friends.
Some lamented it can be slow to download the pictures on their side (Most, if not all, have Broadband). The picture files are not huge, but my connection is only a residential Broadband one.
The ISP states that: "The upload speed is 256 Kilobits/Sec. Average upload rates are circa 20 Kilobytes/Sec."
Coming to my silly questions:
1) How much my Upload speed should be to confortably support 5-10 users at a time?
2) Since I got a new PM G4 with a 7200 rpm HD and a Gigabit Ethernet port and a slightly faster processor, should I look at the modem/router specs? Can they affect/limit upload speed?
If anyone can give me some basic tips, I'd be grateful.

That's easy to calculate.
Assume that your 10 users are on broadband connections with a 1mbps download speed. In order to fulfill everyone's demands at top speed you need a 1mpbs x 10, or 10mpbs upload speed.
Of course, it's unlikely that everyone will download files at the same time, and it's also unlikely that they'll sustain 100% of their rated download speed, so you can probably halve that figure without any noticeable degradation, but even 5mpbs is way higher than your current 256kbps upload link.
It's also clear that your internet connection is your bottleneck. Upgrading the server isn't going to make any difference.

accidentally one diretory onto another and run out of space.
Thunderbird TB crushed and lost lot of emails.
There shall be a popup asking: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO MOVE DIR1 to DIR2
preventing to do that action automatically as it is unstoppable and unreversable
and in case of low disk space leads to DB corruption.

Once you face the problem (don't now how big your DB is, mine 20GB, 9 years) then maybe you change your mind. How many times a day you reorganize your folders? Have your moved a folder bigger then 2 or 3 GB by click?

I'm worried that when I collect emails on my iPhone she wont be able to collect those (same) emails via her powerbook (as I will already have collected them). My thought was; if I could use say Thunderbird on my iPhone and collect mail she would be able to collect the same mail via Apple's mail on her powerbook.
That's not how collecting mail works, really. The email client doesn't matter *at all*--it depends on whether the account is POP or IMAP and what settings are in use.
I have a POP account that is set up to download messages and then leave them on the server (this requires setting the POP settings in both Mail desktop and Mail iPhone that way). So all my messages get downloaded both in Mail and on my phone as new, unread, messages.
A POP account set to delete from server after downloading would cause the problem you cite. An IMAP account would download the messages everywhere, but would mark the ones you had already read as Read when your wife downloaded them, and if your wife deleted a message that wasn't for her, it would also get deleted for you.
Google POP vs IMAP for more, and see what your email provider offers, and check the settings.
Not such a silly question---it's a bit complicated.

... or should I leave it on all the time like I've been doing. after reading misery posts about repairing, etc, I'm hesitant to turn it off because I might encounter some problem.

There are few silly questions - answers, yes!
I leave both my wireless keyboard and mouse on all the time. If they are Apple, they go into a very low power mode a short time after they are idle.
I have seen nothing that indicates that battery life is significantly extended by turning them off.
