MB 13 aluminum with XP Pro, computer locks with second monitor attached

I have a new macbook 13 unibody with windows XP pro, SP 3 installed. When i use an external monitor in dualview, the computer hard locks after the computer is left idle for a while - I think when power management tells the screen to shut off. The computer works fine without a second monitor in use. Using the bootcamp version of the video driver (177). Any suggestions?

There is a possibility that all you need to do is go into the display properties of the HP and have it look for the adapter.
First the model number of the HP and then the Windows version that is installed, please.

Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)
The purpose of this discussion thread is to:
    (1) Get community thoughts around using alternative and complimentary mousing approaches with MacBooks
    (2) To share a current and searchable set of resources for those interested in leveraging a best-of-both-worlds approach for using a non-Apple Trackpoint Keyboard with an Apple MacBook.
    (3) To level-set the fact that a Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard works with MacBooks automatically and instantly out-of-the-box.
Note: I created this discussion because I found that all the other discussion threads related to using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with MacBooks were archived and therefore I could not post my thoughts there.
I have been using MacBooks for 3+ years now.  Airs, Pros, Retinas etc.  I LOVE the built-in MacBook Apple Trackpad.  It is wonderful.  Apple has no equal as far as Trackpads go.
In addition, I have been using the Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with my MacBooks for ~2 years, and below is why I have found BOTH the Apple Trackpad and Thinkpad Trackpoint to be great.
The Trackpoint and Trackpad both have their sweet spots.  Personally I use the built-in Apple Trackpad on my MacBooks when I'm using my MacBook for less than 1 hour, loosely speaking.  If I am going to be heads-down for more than 1 hr writing, reading, surfing, graphic designing, programming, workshop facilitating, teaching, mindmapping, presenting, demoing, etc. then I pull out my "Lenovo Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint (55Y9003) > https://www.google.com/search?&q=lenovo+thinkpad+trackpoint+usb+keyboard
I know many will laugh at me for using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with a MacBook...  Keeping an open mind, let's just agree that there is historical precedence for alternative mousing devices.  If I could only choose one, I would use the Apple MacBook built-in Trackpad exclusively, however with alternatives come potential benefits.  Keep in mind that Apple, Microsoft, Logitech and many other companies make millions of dollars each year providing alternative peripheral devices for computers, and mousing is no exception.  Regardless, I just want to share my positive experiences using both. :-)
Why should you care?  For *some* people the following is true and meaningful.  The Trackpoint (the little red eraser head stick thingy) in the midle of the keyboard enables useful and unique dynamics/use-cases, including:
You don't have to take your hand(s) off the keyboard to mouse
You can independantly click without accidentally moving the mouse (Yes I know some people don't have issues with this)
You don't run out of finger-gesture runway when you're moving your mouse across the screen (I know this is a gray area for some people)
For mouse-movement-heavy applications (e.g. Graphics, drawing, etc.) the Trackpoint *is at times* more exacting
Below I share some pictures (which I know *look* ridiculous to some people, but none-the-less help demystify what this looks like.  And, while ridiculous looking, it is actually quite thin and elegant once you get over the initial shock of seeing these two diverse technologies combined in this way.
Rest assured, the keyboard shown below (google "55Y9003") is VERY light, thin and fits in almost any laptop case/backpack easily so it is not a big deal to carry it, if you work on-the-go.  In addition:
It is UNCANNY how well it fits on top of the keyboard space of all MacBooks.
It fits perfectly around the corners of the MacBook Pro/Air/Retina keyboard
Note: I took one of the 5 rubber feet/pads off the bottom of my keyboard, the one in the middle
Lastly, you can actually use the built-in Apple Trackpad at the SAME TIME as the Trackpoint Keyboard.
It is quite a nice best-of-both-worlds approach for people that like the benefits of the "Why should you care?" use cases above.
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)

Newer Bluetooth version of the ThinkPad External Trackpoint Keyboard available...
The new version is smaller, so you can use your MacBook Trackpad at the same time as your Trackpoint keyboard.
    Here is the Lenovo model/Part Number# 0B47190
Here is a picture of what it looks like:
Note: Just like the older larger USB model keyboard, there is a rubbery footpad in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard that I just peeled off.  Otherwise, it makes the "H" key press accidentally under-neath the keyboard.  Once I took that off, it fit perfectly over and around the built-in MacBook keyboard, so I can optionally put it on top of my MacBook for easy typing. :-)

  • Airport not maintaining internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard

Airport keeps throwing me out of internet connection on my D-link router with Macbook Pro 5.5 with Snow leopard. Pls if anyone has a solution to this then let me know

I'm using my PC notebook because connecting with my iMac is IMPOSSIBLE!!! If I get connected at all, it's worse than dial-up speed.
We are wireless via a D-Link DIR-625 (new) -- but was having some problems before with a netgear. Problem much worse now. My computers are not the primary computers. My sister gets that coin toss. She is a PC user. I share with her using WPA2. When the iMac "wakes" the signal bands are strong, but when I go to a page I lose all signal strength. And several times a day I get a message indicating an error joining the network -- arghhhhh -- HELP!
Is the problem with D-Link or Mac? Thanks for any help.

  • How do I get my Mac Pro to see the second monitor through a video splitter and/or switcher?

In a recording studio we have a Mac Pro with two video display monitors in the control room and we want to be able to show the content of the second monitor to the person in the recording room on a big display monitor there. However, when we interpose a switcher or splitter between the computer and the second monitor so that we can (with a switcher) switch the second monitor signal from the control room monitor to the record room monitor or (with a splitter) split the signal to go to both monitors, we have no luck. On startup the computer does not see the monitor through the switcher, so it doesn't recognize its existence. If we start the computer up without the switcher in the signal chain, it sees the second monitor just fine, and (weirdly enough) we can then change the cabling to interpose the switch, which then works to switch back and forth between second monitors (control room and record room), but that cable swapping's a royal PITA. We want a simple solution that will allow us to start up the computer, see the second monitor in the control room, then choose to show it to the person in the record room with a simple flip of the switch (or even better, split the signal so it's available both places). The splitter we've tried most recently is this one: http://tinyurl.com/curen39 I'd appreciate any advice from people who have tried this configuration or something similar with success. We have a full ProTools HD Accel 3 system installed, so there's no room to install a second video card. Thanks.

Thanks for the response! Yes, it's a 5x70 video card, a 5770 I believe. In any case, it does have the three ports, but (a not-well documented fact) that doesn't mean one can really get three full-resolution signals out of it at one time, as you alluded to in your message. So, yes, we did try hooking all three up directly to the computer, but the computer would only recognize two of those monitors, and the only way to get it to "de-recognize" the second monitor and recognize the third monitor was to physically disconnect the second monitor.
I did say when you want to connect three monitors to 5x70's there are some rules to adhere to.  These are covered in the first two apple docs mentioned above, or by title:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
The general gist of these rules is that to drive three monitor son a 5x70 you need two active adapters.  That is why one of your monitors was disabled when you tried to add a third.
Here's a good explanation of what's going in here and why you need two active adapters on these cards:
Active vs. Passive Displayport adapters *the truth*
If you use DVI monitors and any of them have resolutions less than 1920 x 1200 then you can use single link active adapters. The "AMD Eyefinity Validated Dongles" chart shows some active (and passive) adapters that are acceptable.  For example of a single link DVI active adapter is the Accell B087B-006B.  An example of a dual link DVI active adapter would be the one from monoprice.com if you need to connect monitors with a resolution greater than 1920 x 1200.
I'm doubtful that SwitchResX would be able to convince the computer that there were only two monitors connected and direct the second monitor signal to the correct place, but it certainly seems worth a try, so thanks for the idea! Any other ideas are still welcome in the meantime.
I'm not doubtful.  It is a very powerful utility for dealing with all aspects of multiple monitor configurations (they call them "Display Sets") complete with forcing EDID information if necessary.  The different configurations can be controlled with a (contextual) menu and/or hot key.
SwitchResX is academic at this point if you want to have all three monitors connected.  You would need to get that working first.  Then use SwitchResX to vary the configuration combinations.  So if you go this route the "name of the game" is figure out the active adapters you need.
I only described in general terms above about the adapters since you never said exactly what kind of connections these monitors require (single link DVI, dual link DVI, hdmi, mini-displayport, vga).

  • Why can't I sync iPod touch calendar with macbook pro any more with latest OS X?

since most recent software update with my macbook pro, contacts, calendar no longer syncs when I connect ipod touch with macbook pro. hate the cloud and want to stay "old fashioned". how can I?

If you have Mavericks the only way to sync those items is via iCloud.
If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. For more information, see iCloud Help at icloud.com.

  • Garagekey USB keyboard works with MacBook Pro, but not with 27"  iMac

Just got a brandnew 27" iMac. The Garagekey USB keyboard doesn't work. It's recognized in systemProfiler, Audio-Midi Setup, GarageBand and Logic. But no Midi is coming in. When I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it works immediately. I know the Garagekey doesn't work with some 3rd party USB hubs, maybe for lack of enough power, but it works always at the internal USB hubs with the MacBook Pro. Why doesn't it with the 27" iMac? I'm cueless...
The IMac Systemprofiler says: Current Available (mA) 500, Current Required (mA) 300. So I guess, it can't be a power problem?

Have the same problem with Logic Pro. Works on my old Mac Mini but not on the new iMac 27" i5. Apple told me that it is a difference between the boards they used on the two computers. They said that even if I got a new mac mini I would run into the same problem. they recommended that I upgrade my mini, or try another piece of hardware to connect the two. Looking for hardware now. Good luck to you.

  • Weird problem with Macbook Pro 15" and Asus PB278 monitor

    Hi there
I recently bought a brand new MacBook pro 15" the one with a dedicated nvidia 750 vid card. However I'm facing weird problems while connecting it to a external monitor Asus PB278 (1440p monitor). I use a mini display port to display port cable.
My problem is: Sometimes it works perfectly, but then if I put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it won't recognise the screen at wake up, at first I tried to restart the system, power on and off the monitor, connecting and reconnecting the cable... nothing worked. I even bought a expensier cable thinking it was probably a low quality cable. I found that then only way to fix this is to connect the monitor with a mini display to HDMI cable I have (won't support over 1080p), and then put the mini display to display port cable again... it is freaking bizarre.
This is very frustrating, I live outside the US and while the retailer will honor the guarantee I'm not sure if this is a Software or Hardware problem, It will take them about 3 weeks to replace my system which is unfortunate due to I have plenty of work to do. I don't want to send it on guarantee just to find out hey... display recognition is broken again. My questions are:
Is there a way to know if this is a hardware or software problem?
I've heard Yosemite is having some issues regarding external displays, is this one of those?
Have you found yourself experiencing this problem? Could you fix it?
Sorry if my english is a bit weird, thanks in advance.

    Hi Gatobolo,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you've discovered unusual behavior with your MacBook Pro and an external display, where you need to temporarily connect a different display adapter before you can use your Asus PB278 again.
I can offer some additional tips to help resolve or further isolate the issue you're seeing.
First, try the following resets to see if they eliminate the behavior:
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Next, if the issue occurs again, try restarting your Mac into Safe Mode:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
You can find the steps above in this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
If your display is recognized in Safe Mode, or after restarting again, the issue may be due to a software conflict.
Another suggestion mentioned in the article above is to try a different type of display adapter, such as a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.
If the issue persists, you can also back up your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite.
OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
If the issue still occurs after a clean install, troubleshooting the hardware may be necessary.
    Best Regards,

  • Airport/TC working with MacBook Pro but not with my Mac Pro???

    Hi all,
I've got a Time Capsule connected to a Westell Modem through AT&T. Needless to say; I've had a lot of issues with my setup but this one has my stumped.
After my network crashed a few days ago, I reset everything and got my Airport network running on my laptop. I cannot get it to work on my Mac Pro. My MP doesn't even see the Time Capsule when I run Airport Utility. It'll show the network on the Airport Icon at the top of the page and will even let me choose it when picking a network to connect to.
Anyone know what to do, please help!!!
    Thanks!!!
    Chris

On the Mac that won't connect using wireless:
Open System Preferences and click on Network
Click the Airport connection on the left
Click the Advanced button on the lower right
Look for the name of your wireless network and delete it using the - (minus) button at the bottom of the connection list. Delete any other networks that you do not need as well
    Apply changes
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Under the Kind column, look for any listings of Airport Network Password and delete them
    Restart your computer
Keep your Mac close to the TC for now and click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and try to log on to your wireless network.

  • Problem with using Kensington cable lock with my macbook

Just got a Kensington Microsaver to secure my Macbook. I thought if I choose Kensington there will be no problem connecting it. However, the lock creates a gap between the frame and the body of the macbook. It looks really "ugly" and unhealthy. I do not want to break my macbook or let dust enter it.

  • Problem with premiere pro and encore with win7 enterprise 64-bit.

We are a college with approx 500 pc's running win7 enterprise 64-bit.  Premiere pro and Encore will only open with admin login, not user login.  All other packages ok. Any suggestions as to why this is?

Our lab has just had CS6 installed on it, running Win 7 enterprise. A user account will open a Premiere Pro project. I've done it. That was only to check that everything worked ok. I edited a couple of clips and stuck them on a sequence (16:9 PAL DV) and it played them ok and the project was saved back to the USB hard drive OK.
I have also opened up encore, made a new project and saved it to the USB HDD. No assets were added to it, just checking that the preference files had copied from the central server to the machine, so that users have certain options already pre-selected.
What exactly are the problems with Win 7 enterprise?
