MB 875P won't boot (no POST), I've tried everything

Hello.
I just decided to post here as my last resort before throwing my motherboard for recicle.
I was a happy owner of this MSI motherboard MS-6758 875P Neo for five years.
Specs has changed along the years, but in the last months it was:
MB: MSI MS-6758 875P Neo
CPU: Intel Prescott 3.4 GHz
RAM: 2x A-Data 512 MB at 533MHz
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128 MB (AGP)
PSU: 550W
UPS: Powerware 5115
Amongst other peripherals.
One day, while I was just doing some web browsing, operating system crashed, nothing would move the last screen. I pressed reboot and, after that, it didn't boot again (almost, read ahead).
What happens:
Nothing. Blank screen. No beep. D-bracket lights always green (all of them). Disks and coolers start spinning.
What have I tried so far:
1. Reset bios - tried with the jumpers thing and also removing the battery. Result: nothing.
2. Unplugged every other cards/peripherals except cpu, video card and ram.  Result: nothing.
3. Different CPU (P4 2.4 GHz). Result: system started up! I thought I just found the problem! It's the CPU. But no. It just happened again, after something like 5min of running the OS. After that, even with the 2nd CPU, system didn't boot evermore.
4. Different ram and psu. Result: nothing.
At this time I left the computer in it's corner, for about a month, I was out of time to keep testing it. Then I gave it a try again:
5. Looked for damaged caps, but none were found.
6. Redo the test no. 2, but out of the case. Result: blank screen, but it did POST. I heard some 4 or 5 fast beeps, and again, after that, the same problem. I couldn't make it to this situation again.
7. Different video card (agp and pci) and another PSU. Result: nothing.
8. Went to a friends house with the MB only, plugged psu, ram, cpu and video card from his working system. Result: nothing.
Notes:
1. For nothing I mean that happened just the same as described above.
2. System was protected by an UPS for the last three months before this happened, so I think (in an unskillful way) that is very difficult that some component has been electrically damaged.
3. I looked for MSI support in my country (Portugal), but the only info I found is a phone number. I think I could try first posting here.
My questions:
1. What else should I do? If there is some else...
2. Do you think that it's reparable? If so, how much will it cost?
3. Do you have any other advice? I'll appreciate that.
Thank you very much in advance.
Regards

Henry and dromonk, thanks for your words.
I'd like to add some more notes:
4. While in my last tests, I've noticed that the chipset fan is dying, it makes more noise than usual. I don't know if this is relevant.
5. All the tests done out of the case were with the board lying on the floor, and an antistatic bag under the board.

Did you use fresh thermal compound each time you removed cooler from CPU while swapping them?
I'll be honest, I didn't. I didn't either try my CPU with another motherboard, because the other that I have access doesn't support it. However, the other CPU I tried is full working. But read on, please.
Quote
D-LED's allways green even through POST or do they change red/green while POST'ing?
The problem is, the system doesn't even get to POST. All four D-LED's are always green, since I press the Power Button, until I press the Power Button again. Looking at manual it says: "Operating System Booting". That, sir, is a lie.

I would hate to think all of the CPU's are dead now from overheating.
I'm not quite sure of what did you mean. Even thought I didn't test my CPU (3.4 GHz) with other MB, I guarantee you the other CPU (2.4 GHz) I tested on my MB has no problem (it's working right now). Also, I may add that I always used my CPU with an adequate cooler (Zalman 7000B Cu). Oh, and I never overclocked it. It always ran within an appropriate range of temperatures.

i found one thing with msi boards stick a folded up piece of paper between mother board and case behind the the ide bracked alot of times its shorting out even thoght you pulled out of case  it was alast resort i found on web i tried b4 i chucked mine and sure enuff it worked
Thanks for that trick. Unfortunately, I think it is pretty useless in this situation, since I already tried running the system with the motherboard out of the case. But, nevertheless, I just did another try. And yes, I put a piece of folded paper behind the IDE connector on the board, right between the MB and the antistatic bag.
System specs for this last test:
CPU: mine
Video Card: mine
RAM: 1x mine
PSU: 300W OEM (it was more in hand, but I'm sure it's working)
UPS: mine
Peripherals: D-Bracket
Case: out of it, above an antiestatic bag and with the paper thing
Notes:
1. mine means that it's the same as stated in the beggining of this topic.
2. For this test, I did apply fresh thermal compound between the CPU and Zalman, after removing the old one (it was a bit dry, by the way).
3. Before this test, MB was with no bios battery for something like 15min.
What happened:
The same... no boot, no beep, no post, four green lights, and fans spinning.
So, is there any more suggestions?
Do you think it worths taking it to MSI repair? Any idea of how much they would charge?
Again, thank you very much for reading and replying me.

My HP G7000 G7096EA Won't boot, no post/bios, blank grey screen - It does appear to get into windows after return is pressed, albeit with blank grey screen.
I've reseated the RAM/harddisk, tried the power button reset method. Left it overnight with power battery/power.
I'm at a loss now with what to try. It does look to be a dead graphics chip, which is a shame and will probably put me off HP for life!

Ok, I've stripped it down to diagnose. Due to the piss poor cooling on the graphics chip, it's fried itself and melted the solder underneath.
This was actually the second laptop I had off HP as the first broke within a very short time.
Needless to say, I'll be buying from Dell in the future! What a crock of **bleep** HP are.
Oh yeah! And HP wanted £16 + vat just to speak to some outsourced crappy call centre!

Yeah, first my thought was also that... that's why I've gone to Apple and they already switched the phone twice!!!
Last time was yesterday... I posted this here because I came from Apple and with a new iPhone 5, although I didn't restore anything from iCloud, I hadn't even logged in to iCloud / AppStore, and without any event on the lockscreen my iPhone 5 was already "locked" on the unlock screen... after a mere 45m after I used it without a single App!! Just a couple of SMS / 1 or 2 calls... I'm going to Apple again on monday, but tried to post here to see if this has happened before to anyone with 3 new iPhones!!!

Did you download the new iTunes update that was also released this afternoon? That might be the problem. The new iTunes update came out today as well as the new iOS 7 update and if you haven't downloaded the new iTunes update it may be a compatibility problem so if you didn't, first update to the new iTunes and try again.

Hi, when you say you have tried everything... I presume you have gone into Settings > Store and logged out and back in with your account details?
You could try purchasing an app via iTunes to see if its an issue with the device or the account you're using.
    Hope this helps.

  • 875P Won't Boot Up

I have an MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R motherboard and an 3.0 GHZ Presscot Pentium 4...
The problem is that when I turned off my pc as normal after 2 minutes I turned it on the motherboard wouldn't boot up after 10 times I tried... It displayed a blank screen and the monitor's power button is amber color. The D-bracket at the back has 4 Red LED's which says in the manual that its either the processor is damaged or not connected properly. The only thing that I remembered that its hot that day and the weird thing is that the motherboard didn't automatically shutdown when I think the cpu is above its limit temperature. This happened twice, the first time it happened that i did the same thing as mentioned above but when I opened my pc the next morning the motherboard booted up with no problem at all. Why now it wouldn't boot up even after a day has passed? What do you think happened now? Do I have to replace the processor or do I have to clean the cpu fan and install properly the processor??? Need your help urgent!!!

    Sorry for the long reply...
I tried to removing the pci cards, video card and memory modules on the board and even reset the CMOS.
But it still won't boot-up. The BIOS wasn't updated when it was bought but I will check what BIOS version we had. If still re-pasting the thermal grease dosen't work then my cpu is fried then??? Is it possible that since its hot that day the thermal grease evaporated??? The one thing I know that it operates at around 60-62 deg Celcius with system idle. When the OS is operating with multiple programs it shoots up to 72 deg celcius... The highest it received is 74 deg celcius. My father also stated that checking the PSU if its delivering the necessary voltage in the processor... My only problem is that the PC is 1 year and 10 months. Isn't that a bit of a short lifetime for a Pentium 4 processor???

  • Pavillion dv9580us turns on, but won't boot or POST

I have an HP dv9580us that I bought about 2 years ago. It had been working well until a few days ago. Now when I turn it on the lights come on, the fan turns, but nothing happens. A few seconds later everything turn off, then the lights come back on again, and it just stays like that. No beeps, no blinking lights (they turn on but don't blink), no sounds, the screen completely blank all the time.
So, I think the BIOS is not even making it to POST at all. I already tried re-seating the RAM, took the battery off, took the CD drive off, re-seated the HD, and reset the bios.
Any ideas on what may be the problem? I suspect the motherboard, but on most cases I read about the system does boot or POST.

According to the result of your tests, you arer pretty sure that there is a CPU or Motherboard failure.
Not easy to say which one fails. Maybe both!
If your computer is under warranty, don't hesitate!
You can extract the HDD and make a backup of it before you send the computer.
I would recommend using a USB adapter that can connect your internal hdd (now external!) to the USB of to another computer.
Modern USB adapters for HDD can do SATA and (P)ATA. They are even shipped with an external power supply so that you can power on your hdd.
If your computer is not covered by any warranty, well, that's harder. You could try to extract the CPU and replace it to see if anything goes better.
Or you could just purchase a new computer and transfer your current data to your newer computer.
There are even some tools that allow you to transfer the data AND the system+applications directly to your new computer so that when you power it on for the first time with the transferred configuration, it can boot enough of Windows to detect the new hardware.
I used to use Qualystem ubiboot to do so but now that Qualystem has been acquired it seems that this tool is not available anymore (or with a larger/more expensive package). There was a company from New Zealand that had a similar tool...
    Good luck

  • My dv2000 won't boot or POST.

My HP Pavilion dv2000 won’t boot… on powering up button all LED indicators remain solid on (blue), including the QuickPlay, the wireless indicator is orange of course. Cannot access the BIOS. Also the hear the cranking noise by the CD drive… and that is it. Nothing else happen. The screens remain dark. I tried a hard reset: nothing. I tested the memory modules, had drive and cd drive with another laptop and they all seem to work fine. Lastly I took them way and powered on; I still got the same result. I have no idea what is going on. Any help?
HP Pavilion dv2000 - Window Vista – no longer under warranty

    Hi !
Seems that there is possible failure in the motherboard already because you can't even boot into BIOS.
Try a Hard Reset first. Remove the battery and unplug the charger. Then press and hold the Power Button for about 15 secs. Put the battery and charger in, then try to power on.
You can also try to reset the BIOS by removing the RTC battery, wait for about 10-15 secs then put it back again then power on the notebook.
If none of these would work, I'm sorry to tell but the notebook needs to be serviced.

  • Z77A-GD65 build won't post, I've tried everything I can think of...

    Hello all,
    Here are the parts:
    MSI Z77A-GD65 mobo
    Intel i5-3570K LGA 1155
    MSI N560GTX-TiHawk graphics card
    Samsung 30nm DDR3 RAM 2x 4gb
    Corsair H100 cooling
    Samsung 830SSD
Silverstone ST1000 1000watt power supply (this and my HDD are the only components from my old build and the HDD isn't attached)
I plug everything in, check and recheck, and all the fans and lights turn on for maybe a second and shut off with no beeps. I've RMA'd the board and processor to no avail. I've been breadboarding the build since the first time it failed to start. I checked the power supply with the paper clip test and on my old build to see if it was the problem and it was not as far as I can tell. It still functions as it should with the old build.
I followed multiple instructions to trouble shoot this problem and haven't gotten anywhere. I've tried with just the CPU, H100 and a stick of RAM and still get the same issue. I've tried both sticks separately in each socket and had the same issue, as well as a completely different set of sticks. I've switch the CPU cooler from the H100 to the stock one with no results. Reseated everything. Reset the CMOS. This build has never posted so nothing is overclocked and nothing has had any firmware updates. I've tried everything I can think of to get this problem fixed and I can't find the solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I should probably note that my old build is pretty old so most of the new parts aren't compatible with it so I can't update firmware and such on my own if those are possible issues.
    Thanks.
PS. Posting from my IPad so I apologize for any typos.

Are you saying that this is a new board and processor after having the same problems on the previous parts ?
I bought all the parts for this build, had the issue and though it was mobo caused so I sent that back. Then I had the same issue with the replacement so i sent the processor back. Same issue with the replace ment processor.
Quote from: xmad on 27-July-12, 19:37:58
Just to ask a probably silly question, but does that old psu have the proper connectors? Are the 4 pin connectors near the cpu filled? Is the backplate on backwards and shorting something?
Yes, it has all the right ports and connections. The backplate is correct as far as I can tell.
After talking with MSI and a local computer shop my current best guess is that I got a board with an old version of the bios that isn't compatible with the processor I have. That means to bios will need to be flash updated, something I have no idea how to do. My local computer shop said they could do it for 65$ but with no garuntees if something goes wrong. So, I'm going to send it to MSI and have them do it.
Thanks for the ideas guys, if you can think of anything else let me know.

  • IMac G5 - boots up to blue screen - tried everything

I have an iMac G5 (no iSight) 2GHz. Came across following problem (running MacOs 10.4.11):
    - Normal boot: Mac goes through normal start up, but never gets beyond the blue screen - i.e. just before log in.
    - Safe boot: boots up OK & can log in.
Up to this point, has been working fine for however long I have had it (maybe 3 years, I think).
I have trawled through the various sites and tried everything, including:
    - Resetting PRAM
    - Resetting SMU
    - Disk Utility - repair permissions (some problems, now fixed)
    - Disk Utility - repair disk (no problems)
    - Apple Hardware Test from install disk 1 (no problems)
    - Re-formatting disk & re-installing Mac OS from install disks (MacOs 10.4)
None of the above has fixed the problem - in normal boot it stops at blue screen, and if safe boot it gets through OK & works fine.
Next stop is the local Mac repair shop. But before I head off there, I wondered if anyone here could suggest anything.
The following link has three docs - full system profile, console log for unsuccessful boot (i.e. to blue screen) and console log for successful boot (safe mode):

  • ITunes won't sync my music (I've tried everything)

I had to replace my phone (cracked screen) so I used my warranty to get a refurbished iPhone 4s this past weekend. I've done this before and I've never had a problem. I backed up and made sure iCloud was how I wanted it beforehand. (Again, last time I did this same routine and never had any problems) When I came home to sync my phone back to how it was, when it restored, it didn't restore all my apps, I still had to go through and download them off of iCloud. My music isn't on iCloud but was backed up on to my computer. Everything ended up back to normal except for one thing- When I restored it and then even synced it, my music wouldn't go on to my phone.
I then went through and made sure everything was checked and how it should be and it is. Sometimes my iTunes either gets stuck at the "step 4/4" part or cancels the sync before it even gets to the music for some reason. I've tried every internet "solution" I've read and my school help desk couldn't figure it out either. I have the latest software on both my computer and phone. My music shows up and plays and everything from my computer but just won't sync on to my phone.
I just don't see why it's doing this. I have over one thousand songs and I really miss getting to listen to them.
If anyone can help me out that would seriously be appreciated!

THANK YOU SO MUCH . I too, tried everything, but it just didn't wanted to work. Either internet, Airtunes (without speakers) and LAN where working or Airtunes-speakers and nothing else. Also only when Airtunes-speakers where working my Airport express showed up in the Airport admin tool.
So the fix was simple: system settings > Network > Airport > tcp/ip
I'd changed the ip to 10.0.1.4 (it was somthing like 10.34.23.2)
    copied subnetmask and Router adresse.
Now i opened Airport admin tool. And entered ip adresse/subnetmask/router information and everything works again.
This problem happened when i turned on: Distribution of ip adresses and turned it back again.
Notes: 1) when entering only ip 10.0.1.4 in airport - konfigurationassistent, iTunes shows the speakers, but claims that the speakers are being used by another.
    2) Even by hard resseting, the airport remembers the "ditribution of ip adresses", and has it turned ON, which is wired.
    3) During this problem i'd noticed that when ditribution of ip adresses was turned ON my internet, Airtunes (without speakers) and LAN where working
When ditribution of ip adresses was turned OFF only iTunes speakers where working.
    4) When ditribution of ip adresses was turned OFF airport admin tool can only see the airport for about 1 second, because that is when bonjour kicks in and after that the airport becomes invisible. Itunes much slower finds the speakers than aiport-admin which is why it simply doesn't show up at all.

I plugged the SATA in to the sata one port and powered it. I enabled the SATA in the bios with RAID disabled. When the system boots up it does the memory chech and lists all the IDE devices. Then it says "Detecting IDE drives..." and just hangs there. The new drive spins so it definatly has power but occasionaly it make occasional clicking sounds.
Once it actually booted up and windows detected it. I decided to reboot it just to play it safe but it never would get past post screen again. I can boot up the system normally when I unplug the SATA cable.

  • Satellite S955 won't boot - no POST and black screen

    Hi
I've a problem with my s955 (14 months old). It is not able to boot anymore. when switched on I can hear only cooling fan spinning up and down and nothing more. Last time it took almost half an hour to bypass this failure. When it's on it does not show any problem at all. When you switched off it's better praying. Now it seems gone. After an hour I cannot see any sign of life except cooling fan activity.
I went thru all the tricks mentioned in another Toshiba forum like power off, take out the battery, keep and hold the power button for at least 60 seconds. I even replaced the internal li-ion rtc battery but with no luck. Because it's not covered by guarantee anymore I opened it. No sign of burnt except a suspicious oxidization of some contacts.
I've contacted Toshiba Italy (even though this is a USA model) and I'm waiting for a possible answer next week. I ran out of possible solution except mobo replacement. Is there anybody around who did face the same issue? Could you please give me an help?
    Thanks and best regards
    Pyder

Hi, no news from Toshiba Italy but I've found a Toshiba authorized workshop that can possibly fix this problem. It seems that, beyond other speculations, the problem can be originated by the mainboard power microfuse (read this interesting reply by maxtek73 [http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Batteries-and-Power/My-Toshiba-Satellite-Laptop-Will-Not-Turn-On/m-p/584008#M11147] at the end of the post). It seems reasonable. Actually, keyboard, dvd player, battery charge, hd and cooling fan are powered up by the mainboard; it seems that there is not enough current to pass initials tests before the POST. That could explain why the cooling fan is trying to spin up at max speed but it cannot. Id remind that at power on, any IT equipment push the fans at max speed and then slow down at normal rate before going into POST process. Ill have a talk with the workshop technician and Ill keep you informed.
    Best Regards

  • MSI Wind U100 won't boot or POST!

My CPU fan was getting noisy so i decided to take the back off and blow out the dust. Before i put it back together i decided to plug in the battery and turn it on with the back cover off to make sure i fixed the noisy fan. That's when it happened. The blue star lights up and that's it. Blank screen, no POST, nothing! Hmm, i thought maybe there was a case sensor or something so i pulled the battery, put the cover back on and still nothing. Oh yeah, the CPU Fan spins for 2 seconds, much quieter now.
I have also tried... removing the battery and power cord and let sit 10 minutes, power by cord with battery removed, removing little BIOS motherboard battery, removing HDD, re-seating all connectors from LCD screen, and the usual cursing.
Somebody please tell me how to fix this thing.

I have the exact same issue...only one blue light and power cycles when you try to stop it.  System will not post.

Already tried reseating CPU and fan...already tried moving ram to second (black) slot.

    Hi,
Post S/N of the motherboard and we are able to tell you (roughly) which BIOS version it has.
What if you try without graphics card?
Did you try to clear CMOS? --> >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If it needs updating, you will either need:
    -Supported CPU by current BIOS
-SPI programmer (some IT services has one)
