MB doesn't connect to Airport unless very close to the router as of this wk

My MacBook only connects to AirPort when I am in the same room as the router. It only started doing this two days ago. I am using a BT Home Hub.
My dad also has a MacBook, the same model, and it picks up the Internet wherever he is in the house. My mac also did the same up until the weekend.
I suspect that this is the AirPort card - where is this located in the MacBook, can I take it out and check it is connected properly? Or is this only a feature of older portables?
If anybody has any suggestions on how I can fix this I would really appreciate it.
I am also still covered by Apple's Limited Warranty..

If there was no such problem with your previous iPhone and no change after restoring your new iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup, there is probably a hardware problem with your new iPhone. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

My iPhone 5 won't connect to my home wifi. My other family members have access to the wifi, it's just my iPhone that won't connect. It only connects when I am very close to my router. My iOS is 7.0.6 . The weird part is that I can connect to other wifi's, just not my own. I have tried everything, Turning wifi off and back on, Shutting down my iPhone, Hard rebotting my iPhone, Reset network settings, Reset ALL settings, sycning my iPhone, Unplugging my router, Updating my router, Changing security of wifi. Please help i've been dealing with this for weeks, and its very fustrarating.

have you tried updating the drivers on your modem?

We have 2 iPad 2's. For one of them it must be very close to the router to pick up a wifi signal. We have restarted and reset it without success. Using 7.1.1.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • I phone 5 will not connect to wi-Fi unless very close to router. It has I. The past. All other devices connect effortlessly

Hello.  My I phone 5 will no longer connect to my home wi-Fi unless very close to the router. No problems in the past. All other devices find & select wi Fi no problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

What you described sounds like a part of the iPod antenna system which looks like a gold ribbon.  I don't recommend that you try to effect any repairs yourself.  You would be best off taking it to Apple where you may be able to exchange it for an alike model. The price is 99USD for all 4th gen models, except the 64gb which will cost 199USD.

I am trying to hook up my Airport Express to my current network and AirPort Extreme but keep getting the same error message: "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Any thoughts?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • Printer connected to airport extreme very slow to print but when printer connected to iMac it is very quick to print

Early version of Airport Extreme station, 802.11g, saucer shaped model.  iMac wirelessly connected to internet via space station and modem and Canon MX700 printer connected directly to Airport space station and also printing wirelessly.  When try to print wirelessly, it takes about 1' 10" before printing starts.  When the printer is connected directly to the computer, printing starts almost instantaneously.  Because of internet disconnect which occurred occasionaly,  reset the Airport station and so far no internet disconnect problem but the printer is slow to start printing.  Printer software current but now have the slow printing problem.  I think I have set up the printer properly but do not know why it takes so long to start printing but so quickly when the printer is connected directly to the computer.

I know my post may be late, anyway I hope I can help.
The one main reason I can think of that ethernet is preferable to USB is who wants to run 20 or more feet of USB to network a printer. The cost of the USB cable would make it cost prohibitive. The Airport or generally any router/hub is not always nearby the network output devices. However small office/home setups where the devices and router are within a small area, reachable by USB, then your point is valid.
In any case, don't expect any help from AppleCare to assist you with the settings on the Airport side, Apple doesn't support connecting printers via ethernet . . . pretty lame response. I am really disappointed with the response and very shortsighted.
On the printer side, you need to set a static IP for the printer . . . one within your internal LAN IP numbers.
Before proceeding you will need the MAC address or Machine Address or Ethernet Address, it should look be a series of that will look like 12:32:00:00:21:02. If you print out your printer config page you should be able to find it.
From the Airport app, choose the Internet tab(icon) on the top of the window, then choose DHCP then hit the + key under the DHCP Reservations window. This will open up a series of windows, provide a description of the device, reserve by Mac Address>click continue> type in the Mac Address in the window, and then the IP address that will be static or reserved for only the printer.>Click Done.>Click Update> Router will reboot.
You will need to go to Printer Setup to make sure you have a printer looking for that IP address, and will need to do this on each workstation.
My experience with other brand routers are that they don't require the Mac Address, which caused the delay in figuring this out on my own, (a few hours) but it is working now . . . WHEW!

  • Why?  xbox live doesn't connect to Airport Extreme wireless network

Xbox live wireless adapter is not connecting to my wireless network. xBox live support said to change to WEP security (does not support WPA security). Tried this but it doesn't work either. I can't find any information on Apple support or xBox live support that confirms whether or not the router is even compatible with xbox live. Does anyone know or have experience with this?

Go to your computer and run the Airport Utility. Click on the Manual Setup button. In the tabs you'll see Summary, Base Station, Wireless, etc. Select Wireless. Look about 1/2 way down and you'll see Wireless Security. Click on the popup button and select None. At the bottom of the window click on Update. You'll go offline momentarily as the base station is updated. Now go back to your XBox and connect. Now download all the updates you can.
Once this is finished, go back to the base station and repeat the steps except set the security to WPA and see if your XBox will connect. If not, set the airport for WEP and see if that works.

  • My MacPro doesn't connect to airport express...

hi, I've just connected my airport express to my stereo with a minijack, the light is green, the signal coming from my internal wireless card in the menu bar says OK (I've a macpro intel, dual xeon 2,66 Ghz with added airport internal card), but..... when I go to airtunes and I try to connect to my stereo, the clock starts turning, and finally it doesn't connect....
I've already tried to initializate from the airport utility.. but same thing happens again...
ps : the MacBook of a friend of mine connects perfectly to my airport express, and airtunes works fine!
    any ideas?
    thanks

    hello... anybody there...?

  • Powerbook doesn't connect to Airport...

    Hi,
Rather unexpected my powerbook lost lost connection to my Airport Base Station today. Airport is on (Grey in menu bar), my network is in the popup list showing the networks found. Normally it connects automatically to my personal network(no questions asked). At this point it doesn't. When i try to connect to my network(by selecting it in the popuplist) I am asked for a password. I entered the only password i ever use within my System and was told it was incorrect. I then went to SysPrefs-Network-Airport and changed my networks password to the one i want to use (not the enddless string of numbers and letters) but to no avail.
I have then (probably a nono but at this point too late to regret) dumped my airports plists and restarted. This gave me an empty list of preferred networks. I made a new network (without a password for simplicity and test) but that seems not to show up on the popup list. When now i want to connect to my original network in the list i get a window where i can fill in a password but the OK button is greyed out.(Same thing when i try to connect to my neighbors network)
The real interesting (and therefore frustrating) thing is that my wife's macbook, which i set up to connect to the airport station at the same time as my powerbook connects fine.
At this point it feels my logic is missing something. I feel confused since my powerbook senses my airport and i cannot connect to it even though i have made a network. This network has the same password as the one i find for the network of the same name within my airport utility (thru my wife's laptop , not mine)
I am now considering trying to copy all the settings i need to connect well from her laptop to mine.
    Questions:
Is that a good idea and if so how do i go about it?
If i change my password for my own wireless network in SysPrefs, why is this not recognized when i enter it trying to connect to this same network?
    Basicaly: HELP!
    Thx,
    Brick

Hmmm...i seem to have solved the problem. Dont ask me how.
    Cheers,`Brick

  • Connecting to home internet via airport - always need to restart the router

I set my home PC as the main station to connect to my ISP. With a wireless router (linksys Wireless-B), I used to share the internet connection to other wireless devices, for instanace, my palm and ibook, my sister's notebook PC and Pocket PC. once, I took my ibook to an internet cafe, which gives free wireless connection facilities. My ibook obviously scanned the wireless network, and was connected (as I noted from the Summary of the "internet Connection". but, when I activate Safar, it said that it could bring me to any website because my computer is not connected to internet. it's very strange, as the Internet Connection said it's connected to the wireless network. The Safari page suggests me to run "network diagnosis". i follow the instruction, and it says I should restart the router and then it would work. I didn't succeed. A while later, it connected. I thought it was okay.
Then, this problem comes up even when I am using my home's internet connection via the airport. I use DHCP to connect to my home internet connection. though the airport summary page said that it's connected to my router (the IP address is my router's address), again, Safari said my computer is not connected to internet, so it didn't work. I followed the instruction of the Network Diagnosis, it again asked me to restart my router device. I also noted from the Airport Section of the Network Perference that, it says the airport has a self-designated IP addres, so it may not connect to the itnernet. later on, I retarted the router and the modem (without turn on my home PC), the ibook connected to the internet.
i checked the router setting of my home PC. I'm sure that it's open to all wireless user. Strange through, after I update the settings (even though i didn't make any changes, perhaps the action of 'save settings', it's kind of equivalent to the action of restarting it), my ibook's connection works. When my retarted my PC and ibook, the connection problem comes up again.
it's very frustrating. Does it mean that I need to restart my router everytime? What about if I want to connect to wireless hotspot outside?
    Please please help

Your problem description is complicated, making it hard to figure out what exactly is wrong. Unfortunately, WiFi does this quite often.
To avoid this kind of problem, you should set up different Locations in your Network Preferences for different places that you connect up. That is, make one location for your Internet cafe and another for home. Leave the Automatic location alone.
For locations you know you are going to connect by WiFi, go to Network Port Configurations and drag Airport to the top of the list to give it priority.
If you have a location, where you want an ethernet connection or want to use your internal modem only, then drag those options to the top. Get the idea?
MacOS seems to get confused sometimes when you switch back and forth between different connections all the time. This will not happen if you tell MacOS where you are by explicitly setting a location.
To get out of a situation where MacOS thinks you are connected to non-existent ethernet connection, go into
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    and delete the NetworkInterfaces.plist file.

  • My 4s not connecting to WiFi unless im next to the box?

I got my iPhone passed on from my mum and the Wi-Fi on it was working fine. its a white 16 GB iPhone 4s  Today I was on my phone from my room and it wouldn't connect to Wi-Fi, I went right next to the box and that's when it worked. the same problem used to happen when mum had it but it was fixed after I erased everything and started as a new iPhone. now my 4s wouldn't connect to the Wi-Fi unless I'm right next to it. how can I fix this? I upgraded it to IOS 7.1.2 'but that did not fix anything. I need help ASAP

    Hey bronxbomb63,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines the basic troubleshooting steps for Wi-Fi connectivity. I have also included the steps specific to the symptoms you are experiencing:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    1. Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
    2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    4. Restart your iOS device.
    5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    6. Tap  and Forget this Network.
    7. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
    8. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
    9. Update your device to the latest version of software.
    10. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Wi-Fi disconnects or signal strength is less than expected
    1. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
    2. Check for sources of potential interference.
    3. Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
    4. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
                        - previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
                        - recently used Bluetooth accessories
                        - VPN and APN settings
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
