MB Fan revs up for 5 sec then shuts off?

The fan in my 2007 13" White MacBook revs up for a few sceonds then shuts off randomly. This just started happening recently. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and did all the SW/FW updates. I ran Apple Software Diagnostic on it and Rember and it passed both. I also repaired permissions. I took the logic board out and replaced the thermal paste. I cleaned out the fans and vents with canned air. Checked all connections. I ran it on test RAM for a while and it happened so I dont think its the RAM.
Its completely intermittent and random. Unmistakable because the fan is revving at maximum and is really loud when it does this. Ive seen it do it when I wasnt running any apps so I dont think its app related. The machine seems to be functioning fine otherwise. Wondering if anyone is familiar with this issue or has any advice.
Thx!

i mistakenly wrote "clean" install of 10.6 and should have put "re" install of 10.6. i did not wipe the drive which ended up solving my issue. what a weird software issue. i was sure that it was a hardware thing.
i think it was some lingering istatpro or smcfancontrol files hiding somewhere deep in my OS. i deleted both of those apps a little while before this happened. after i deleted them i did do a SMC reset as required. this issue started happening soon after.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The internal drive is malfunctioning. What backups do you have?

  • When I plug in my ear pod, my 6th generation ipod will play for 60 sec then shut off. If i restart it will play for another 60 sec. Has anyone had this problem?

Has anyone had this problem? With earbuds connected the ipod keeps turning itself off. I then have to turn it on and it will play for another 60 sec and shut off.

Make sure the plug is fully inserted into the iPod.  There will be a noticeable click, and you may need to push harder than expected.

  • DV6500 - Fail to power on - LEDs light up for 1s then turns off

    System Specs:
    AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 2GB DDR2 160GB SATA 15.4" LCD
All of a sudden this PC shut off and would not boot up.
Now, when you hit the power button, the LEDs at the top of the keyboard as well as above the touchpad light up for maybe 1 second then instantly shut off. In addition, the CPU fan begins to spin then shuts off when the system powers off.
I've tried with/without battery and while/while not plugged into the AC power adapter. I've tried other working batteries with other working power adapters.
I've tried other, working memory modules. I've reseated the CPU as well as the CPU fan cable. I've completely dissassembled and reassembled the machine hoping there was a loose connection somewhere to no avail.
I'm at the crossroad of deciding to order a replacement CPU or a replacement motherboard (449903-001) in attempt to resolve this problem.
Do you guys have any suggestions as to what this may be? I'm thinking CPU as if it was the system board, I should technically get 5 blinking LEDs per http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSe...
Then again per the same document, if it was a CPU issue I'd see a single blinking light. Which is not what I'm seeing. I show only the LEDs/CPU fan turn on for <1s then shut down.  When I hit the power button again, same thing.
This seems like a somawhat common problem yet no one has posted their 'solution' to this issue.
    What do you guys suggest?
    Thanks,
    Dustin

^Hi.  yesterday, after trying to study on my iphone 4, i accidentally clicked okay on something that poped up while flipping through notecards.  it told me that it was "updating", i had my phone updated to ios7 but not 7.0.2..  i tried to shut if off to see if it would stop the update, because i didnt want it to do that.  after a few minutes i turned it back on and it was still updating.  it then shut off and a screen poped up telling me to plug my phone into iturnes.  itunes recognized my phone and said it was in recovery mode and i would have to restore it.  i have tried to restore it three times and nothing has happened.  it will go all the way through the restore process, say it is finished, and then nothing will happen.  my phone will not stay in DFU mode, i have tried for 20 minutes to get it to.  i have even uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  i dont know what to do and i have been without a phone for alomost 24 hours.  how do i get my phone back to normal?  can i fix it or could at&t replace it?  or do i have to take it to an apple store? Please help me.

Has your phone been jailbroken in the past? If yes, this could be a reason for not being able to finish the restore process.
If not, did you try to restore it on a different computer?

  • TS3274 Some games we have apps for... Open then shut off and won't stay open.......

Some games we have apps for.......open then shut off and do not stay open... Any ideas?

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't help try quitting the app first then reset the iPad. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
If still no joy try deleting the app an download it again.
Also make sure your iPad has enough free space to operate efficiently. With iOS 7 it is recommended that you have 15-20% of the storage space on the device free.  For a 16 GB device that is 2.4-3.2 GB free. For a 32 GB device that is 4.8-6.4 GB free. For a 64 GB device that is 9.6-12.8 GB free.

  • My computer will turn on for a second then shut off.

I had just shut down the computer 30 min before so when i go back to turn it on i press the on button sounds like its starting up then shuts off it has a full charge took out the battery and tried it again. still doesn't work i kept try to turn it on and on but itll just act like its starting up then shut off. sometimes if i let go of the on button too early the light will just come on then immediately shut off. what do i do everything i own thats apple has been breaking this week.

    - If it is only one app try deleting the app and then redownload/install the app.
    - Reset your iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore your iPod.  First from backup and if problem persists restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

Sometimes I have to hold power button for 10 seconds for it to shut off then back on. Sometimes holding the power button for a second is enough for it to come back on.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.

  • 8100AV starts then shuts off

I could use some guidance on troubleshooting steps to isolate this problem. My Mac was stored for about 3 years in its box in an AC controlled environment. Now we want to get some files from it - it started up and ran for about 10 minutes then shut off suddenly. It would not restart. Unplugged the cord after waiting about 15 minutes and it started again ran for 5 minutes and shut off (not shutdown just off like it was unplugged). The next day tried again and it started for about 10 seconds before shutting off. The first two times it started it asked to set the date and time so the pROM battery must be dead.
What steps should I take to troubleshoot? I've done the following:
    1. try a different power cord
    2. try the keyboard button and the button in the back
    3. vaccum the power supply a little (not very well) it is not super dirty

Can you feel the power supply fan's flow of air out the back of the computer's case? What you've described can occur when a failing or dead fan doesn't maintain a tolerable temperature within the power supply. When it gets hotter than it should, a thermal trip kicks in and turns off the computer to prevent any permanent damage. The fact that you can restart the computer after a cooling down period, only to see the computer shut down again after a brief period, is symptomatic of power supply fan failure. Check the fan's ouput, and if it's only producing a weak flow of air, you should open up the computer's case and try blowing out any internal dust from the power supply/cooling fan. You'd be surprised to see how much dust gathers on the backside of the fan blade itself, even though the power supply looks relatively clean from the outside. I'd recommend using a can of compressed air and not a vacuum cleaner internally, because the vacuum cleaner's plastic attachments acquire a static charge. With the cover off, turn ON the computer and visually observe the fan's movement. If it runs intermittently or not at all, you should disassemble the power supply and replace it. Some users have gotten more life out of old/weak/noisy fans by spraying the shaft with WD40 or an equivalent product, to lubricate the worn sleeve bearing. The results of this procedure are mixed, because in cases of fan failure, the cause is often a weak magnetic field that's inadequate to spin the blade.

  • My ipod classic turns on with apple logo then shuts off about 30 seconds later, when plugged in my windows and itunes will not recognize it.

earlier my itunes told me that my files were corrupted and I needed to restore, so I did.  In the middle of the restore I lost internet connection. Now my computer and Itunes will not recognize my Ipod and if it is not plugged in when I turn the Ipod on it only shows the apple logo then shuts off after 30 seconds.  If it is plugged in it will charge, but Itunes and Windows will not recognize it.  I have tried the menu + select shutoff multiple times with no change.  All it will say while it is charging is do not disconnect.

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

  • Ipod will start-up then shut off

Hi - need your help before vacation on a long holiday weekend. As of yesterday, my video ipod was working great. Now, when I turn it on or plug it in, it continually tries to turn on by showing the Apple logo then shuts off and keeps doing this. It will not play nor will recognize that it is plugged into the computer or wall. I am using different cords and also went through the 5 "R"s...would love some insight or tricks to make it work.
    Thanks a million!

Hi, is the battery fully charged?
If you have already followed the 5rs without success it could be probably a HD issue... I suggest to go to your local Apple Store and ask for support, they can help you if the iPod is under warranty
