MB Pro 13 early 2011 keyboard failing
As said in the title, the keyboard on my Macbook Pro 13" 2011 seems like it is starting to fail. Out of warranty about 3 months now.
Zero key doesn't appear to be working. Keyboard viewer shows that the "CMD"s are being pressed with it, even though they aren't. Lower volume button is turning the volume up, and higher volume button isn't working at all. Backslashes press the up arrow key & forward slashes presses the equals key.
Absolutely gutted to be honest. The laptop is looked after, and for the amount of money paid for it I am pretty down in the dumps over the quality its given me. 2 months into having it the trackpad stopped working entirely, and now this. Have a feeling it might be costly, pretty disappointing a year and 3 months down the line.
Anyone had a similar situation? What's the solution? I'm handy with these things so I wouldn't be afraid to tackle the fix myself. Where to start..
Ok, kept retrying the SMC reset and eventually it worked. Fans back to normal. Keyboard still not fully functioning though. Seems to be getting worse as I go along.
Anyone? Really appreciate any insight. What is required to replace the keyboard itself (not the plastic keys). Parts rather than workload.

Macbook Pro early 2011 keyboard back light discoloured
Ive just gotten a Macbook Pro 2011 from a friend as a gift, i believe its the early 2011 model which he won at work for a prize. Everything is perfect on it, however on the keyboard backlight, on the space bar at the bottom nearest to the track pad, about 2 thirds of the way towards the right, there seems to be a brown sort of tint in the backlight which spans about half a centimetre. This may be abit OCD, ive had the space bar off to have a look and it seems to be under the surface layer if that makes sense.
also, apologies for the terrible picture, it was really hard to manage it without the glare of the light affecting the picture.

Will a Macbook pro early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15
My collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15 inch keeps getting stuck on the apple load up screen everytime he hits the power button. He doesnt know what version it is and I forgot to write down the model number of it(Ill update May 16 at 10am PST). I tried safe mode, it worked but after the loading bar gets close to 1/2 it freezes up. He can not find his installation disc that came with the computer. I have mine but its for Model # A1278 I think its snow leopard. Will the installation disc and application disc run successfully on my collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro?
I apologize if there's a similar thread out there, I couldnt find one. -Will a MacBook Pro Early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 MacBook Pro 15?
No it will not.
Machine specific gray/back disks are for one model of Mac only as they only contain hardware drivers for that model, not previous ones.
The 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disk will work and it's available from Apple online for a small charge.

This is indicative of a problem with the boot drive and the file structure retaining data on the drive.
The progress bar progressing and stopping means the fsck drive repair is failing, likley the drive incurred head shock damage at that point.
The boot drive itself is likely fine and the problem can be resolved but the disks are going to be required if it's running Snow Leopard.
First get the disks, then attempt Disk Utility > Repair Disk and check the SMART status if the drive is still good.
If there is no backup of data, get that off the machine using a external boot drive.
To fix that problem of a bad sectors, unfortutly the entire drive will need to be Zero Erased (security option > zero all data) using Disk Uility while c or option/alt key booted from the 10.6 disks (using a wired or built in keyboard), it's the only way.
This means all programs, files (remaining) and OS X will be removed in the process. You could replace the drive also.

Macbook pro early 2011 freezes, slow, weird fan noise + trackpad jumping around
Hi guys, see the Etrecheck report below. My 13' Macbook pro (early 2011) has been very slow for the last few months, the fan makes a weird blowing noise (several fellow students have looked around what the **** that noise was when it started doing it), and recently started freezing when opening iTunes, OpenOffice and even Firefox.
OH AND my trackpad has jumping around without me even touching it.
What do you guys think? What's the problem, what can I do? IF I take it in how much do you think it might cost?
Problem description:
Macbook is slow, freezes for few seconds regularly, and fan makes weird noise

Situation:
I have a 15in Macbook Pro early 2011 that I can not shutdown nor can I run disk utility to repair any issues. I recently had it serviced to replace a failing hard drive.
Known issues:
- Disk Utility: Will not respond. A couple days ago I had to run it to repair some damage to harddrive. When I try to open it, it is frozen with the rainbow ball.
- Shutdown: I can not shutdown or restart my computer as it freezes during shutdown with grey screen. I can manually turn it on and off by holding down the power button.
- Disc Drive: This may not be related but I can not eject DVD in the disc drive.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. I currently live overseas (for school) so just going to an Apple store is not really a realistic option for me at this time. Thanksthetribes wrote:

Take it back to where you had it serviced, there is usually a ~90 day guarantee
you can force a shutdown by holding the power button for longer than usual. -
I get this error nearly enough every time i turn on my MacBook Pro (Early 2011 Model), i says it needs to shut down because an error occured and when it comes back on i get this error below, which i copied and pasted.... Please can anyone help, as i dont understand what this means. thanks. (By the way, just so you know, i dropped my Macbook Pro a month ago).

You should be using the developers installer/unistaller to remove Log Me In from OS X.
Somehow it's in OS X, I don't know, but it's there and you need to remove it. I'm not dealing with Windows, just OS X.
Talk to Log Me In people and find out what is installed where so you can do a manual deletion out of OS X.
If that doesn't work, you have to reboot holding the Shift key down manually search for any Log Me In or Himachi files on your computer, in your System/Library/Extensions folder too, use the free Easy Find.

Macbook Pro Early 2011 having issues
Hi all
I hope this message finds you all well.
Sorry that my first post is one begging for help but with a gig 3 weeks away i am bricking it due to the fact that my macbook pro, early 2011 has been playing up of late. It first started having problems when the L shift key became stuck, not physically but after some investigation on here I used Karabiner software to ascertain the issue and disable the key. However since then the computer hasnt run properly at all.
I have tried disk repair and so forth, also run Avast virus check but the issues still persist.
I run Traktor DJ software and for no reason the macbook has started glitching, spinning wheel of doom comes and everything slows down. I can't run simultaneous programmes and certainly can't run my Arkaos Grand VJ software at all which isn't good when we have a big gig in 3 weeks time.
I have run the Etrecheck as shown below but I dont know what to make of it?!
Can someone please give me some advice as I am stuck and cant rely on the laptop for the gig which will throw a real spanner in the works.
Problem description:
Runs slow, spinning wheel frequently, cannot run arkaos software, tractor software glitches regularly, L shift is stuck on (presently disabled using Karabiner software
EtreCheck version: 2.0.4 (89)

Boot into Recovery mode by holding down the Command and R keys together and use Disk Utility there to Repair your hard drive and repair disk permissions.
Hope that helps.
As for the shift key, you should take the computer to the Apple Genius Bar and have them look at it. -
I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 from the USA. It is now running Mavericks. I connect it to a 27" Cinema Display that I bought in China after we moved to China. Before I installed Mavericks, I could run all of the Adobe CS6 and Adobe CS5.5 applications on my Macbook Pro while connected to the cinema display. Now that I have Mavericks installed, whenever I am connected to my 27" CInema display my Adobe applications crash upon opening. I know this is a rare scenario, but does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? Is there a new driver that needs installed? I'd appreciate any help.
I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

Macbook Pro early-2011 crashing/locking-up
Hello,
My MacBook Pro (early-2011 model 15") has been locking up and crashing lately. It was recently upgraded to Mavericks OSX.This has happened only a handful of randomn times over the past two months. I don't think it has to do with the OS version because it did this a couple months ago as stated when I had Lion, and also ML. However, in the past 24 hours i have locked up around 5 times and crashed at 3 times. I've attached the crash report below from the latest crash this morning. I use one usb port to connect to a Dell monitor using DisplayLink adapter, and the other usb port goes to a 4-port usb hub that has my wired keyboard, mouse, and phones that I test with plugged into. The mini displayport goes to another Dell monitor. Can anyone help me determine the issue? Does it look to you like the RAM has been corrupted and needs replacing perhaps? Or maybe it is this usb hub causing memory crashes from having so much stuff plugged into it? Log below:

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like more isolation might be needed to rule some things out. I would recommend this article:
OS X Mavericks: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13975
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of OS X.
Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers. If you recently updated the app or OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test
Restart your Mac in safe mode.Start up in safe mode
Use Disk Utility to repair your computer’s internal disk.

Problem installing Yosemite on Macbook pro early 2011 10.7.5.
When the installation on my Macbook Pro early 2011 OS X 10.7.5. goes to the page for installing Yosemite, nothing happens and after several minutes it says, "File system verify or repair failed" "Quit the installer to restart your compuer and try again" I have restarted 4 times with the same result
Ended up restoring from Time Machine. This seemed to take care of the errors on the drive that prevented the installation. Will try again.

Macbook Pro(Early 2011) not turning on; Flashing Orange Light on Charger
So yesterday, I did a teardown of my Macbook pro (early 2011) in an effort to clean the keyboard because some keys weren't working. I used rubbing alcohol and As I was putting the keyboard and trackpad connectors back in, I heard the computer making a startup/shut down noise so; I realized I neglected to unplug the battery - out of fear of shock and impulse, I unplugged the battery quickly. The computer shut off and, ever since then, my computer won't turn on. When I plug in the charger; it initially gives me a very faint green light, and when I hold on the power button it changes into a very dim orange blinking light.
I've tried:
1) Resetting the SMC (No such luck)
2) Unplugging the battery; letting the charger charge the motherboard overnight (No luck)
I'd really appreciate some fresh ideas; just to reitterate, it only stopped working the second I impulsively unplugged the charger. So, can a battery die from something like that? Short circuit? Any advice would be really appreciated as I'm in the middle of finals week and really need it.My only issue with that is that there weren't any hardware issues before i decided to open it up. I know the apple people will be very eager to charge me for something in not convinced is a hardware issue. I just get the feeling i screwed something up while I was putting it back together. I'll post a picture of my logic board soon to see if there's something obvious I'm missing

MacBook Pro (Early 2011) No Wifi Hardware Installed
Please help me! I'm confused.
My 13" MacBook Pro (Early 2011) Keeps saying that No WIFI Hardware is installed.
My Mac has been running great until earlier this week. I turned it off one night before bed and then the next morning as I switched it on, it said there was no WIFI hardware installed. I launched recover mode which is when I figured my WIFI works in recovery mode just not in the Mac itself. I reinstalled a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite which worked for a day, but sure thing the next day I loaded the Mac and then there was the same issue. So I reinstalled OS X Yosemite... AGAIN!! this time I hit an error, Yosemite had deleting my recovery drive and unmounted my Macintosh HD but thats anther story to fix another time. Once I finally repaired my disk to install Yosemite my WIFI was working again... until I restarted my Mac and it went off and the error reappeared. Luckily Apple released OS X 10.10.2 so I plugged in the ethernet and installed it which has fixed my WIFI... for now, I'm to scared to restart my Mac. Does Anyone know what is going on? Thank you
Like I said when it gives the error (No WIFI Hardware installed) the wifi connects in recovery just not on my Mac OS. I'm currently using my Mac to submit this question and all seems fine so far.
Thanks again.Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Macbook Pro (Early 2011) not recognizing Apple Magic Mouse
OK, so I recently bought a MacBook Pro (Early 2011 Model) and I cant get my Magic Mouse to connect to the Bluetooth. This laptop is used, but I bought it from a Apple reseller and they told me that it was refurbished and that there should not be anything that is not working. Anyways, when I turn on my Apple Magic Mouse and go to Bluetooth or Mouse in the System Preferences, I don't see anything at all just the loading circle. It will not appear. I have tried doing the trick of holding Command+Option+P+R on startup like some people have suggested but that doesn't seem to change anything. I also brought it to the Apple store and the associate connected the mouse to one of the computers there, so I know that my mouse is working. Is there a way to tell if the Bluetooth in my laptop needs to be replaced? if so, can it be replaced easily without a big cost?
Hi kbridea1,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook Pro isn’t recognizing your Magic Mouse but other devices are able to recognize it. The article linked below provides a lot of great troubleshooting suggestions that will resolve most issues like the one you’ve described.

I hope this helps.

Soundflower is a third-party system modification that includes a kernel extension, and therefore has the potential to cause kernel panics. That's all I know about it, because I never install such things myself. The only way to find out whether it's causing your problem is to test without it.
