MB Pro Restarts/Reboots by itself - is this hardware or software related??
I've replied to a number of posts regarding this topic here but no one seems to have answered this question sufficiently.
My MB pro will just restart itself randomly. It usually happens when I'm not doing anything which makes me think it might be due to some process that happens when the computer is managing power (sleep settings, etc). I've tried changing all my energy settings as well as resetting SMC, pRam, etc. but nothing seems to work.
I'm thinking about doing a clean OS install if this is some software related issue so any input is appreciated!
I've the same problem after the mainboard has been changed two weeks ago. There are no signs or error messages. The MB restarts randomly during screen save.
Last restart time was today, 13:13 (1:13 pm). See enclosed extract of the system.log.
Any idea?

My 2010 Macbook Pro keeps crashing- Cant diagnose if its Hardware or software
Hello,
This is my first post in the community. I apologize if this is a repeat question but I have looked through other threads and could not find a solution.
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro 4GB Ram 120 GB SSD i5 keeps crashing for no reason. It crashes at completely different times and is not consistent. Sometimes if i am opening a new tab or multitasking, even if i am typing a document or copying and pasting text the mac would just randomly crash.
At first I assumed it was a software problem so I deleted all files on the mac and installed the new OS yet the problem still continued. I have realized that if I do less tasks at a time it crashed less frequently but this is a mac and Im sure it is not normal if I can't do research and write a paper at the same time.
Below is the report of one of the crashes. It would be great if someone could tell me if this is a software or hardware issue as I don't have warranty anymore and may need to purchase a new computer because I can't count the amount of times it has crashed while I was doing an assignment.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advanceYou have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version. -
Is this hardware or software issue
Hello
i bought my macbook pro 2 months ago, it was all okay and i was more than satisfied with its performance. 3 days ago, i was working on my macbook and i was using alot of applications, suddenly, mac freezes, i thought that was just 1 time thing, after that it started to freeze a lot, the screen either go to blue color, freeze, or some pixels shows and some n't. i re-installed mac os x snow leopard, while installing i got the same problem many times, finally i made it and re-installed lion again. but the same problem is still there, i have windows installed using bootcamp, and the problem is there also. sometimes everything freeze, but sometimes music still playing.
this is very depressing for me, im like 90% sure that this is a hardware problem, it's still new to send it to support. im still hoping that this is a software issue
anyone had this issue before? those are some links to the problem

Thank youIf you haven't already done so, run Software Update to see whether there's a firmware update for your model. Failing that, call AppleCare.

I have found the frozen login screen problem everytime I start my MacBook Pro 6,2 with Lion. I have tried everything from a simple "restore from a time machine back up" to a "clean Lion install" and the problem still appears.
Does anyone know if this problem is software or hardware related?
MacOS X Lion, Macbook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010)We just had the same problem with a 2010 MacBook Pro and Lion. The problem was solved by replacing the motherboard (thanks AppleCare...).
Hope this helps.

My wife told me the other day that she was having an issue with her ipod which was happening at an increasing rate. While listening to an audio book or music it will randomly stop/freeze, and times the Ipod will reboot. Of course, when listening to a 6 hour audio book and losing your place when this happens can be frustrating. It's about 4 years old and I was thinking that maybe it was the drive inside, but not sure.
Thanks in advance,
BrianConfirm the Hardisk health, by doing the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2
it wont fix your problem by help in troubleshooting.
Have a nice day! -

NVDA(Video): Channel exception! exception type = 0x1 = Fifo: Fifo Method Error
NVDA(Video): Channel exception! exception type = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error
My iMac freezes and crashes and I get the above message in the kernel log. I have done a few reinstalls from time machine but it comes back.
I get to the point where I want to erase the disk and do a clean install but I get afraid that the kernel will panic during install/ I will lose the registration keys to software/ or that I am just wasting my time.
Has anyone truly fixed this? Is an erase and install going to help?
My first crash happened a week or so after updating to 10.6.8. I was watching videos in full screen mode. When I pressed esc it froze. (Sometimes the audio continues but the iMac is frozen.)
So I stopped use Chrome but it followed me to Safari. I like YouTube Videos and can't watch them in safe mode -no sound.
After installing from a time machine back-up and just re-installing my Mac will boot normally but it doesn't last long and I often can't even boot to CD. It sometimes crashes in the finder.
What's going on?
This computer is old but should have tons of life left- if you've been here how did you get out of this mess?
How much is it going to cost me to get my computer back?
I can't do a hardware test because I don't know where the original disks are but tech tools and the system profiler assure me everything is OK.
Any moral support is welcome. It could be a failing drive or logicboard (GPU), it is old and has probably served you well, you can take to an Apple store and they will diagnose it for free, and give you your options, but it is old and are you willing to pay much money to have it repaired? You are probably better off replacing it.
There is some software for data ercovery such as Disk Warrior, but it's not cheap.
Or ask about this program
http://nwsinglespeed.hubpages.com/hub/Do-You-Know-About-Apples-Flat-Rate-Repair- Pricing
You can try shutting down and try a SMC reset
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and see if it will boot, if it does try to do a back up, but something sounds as though it may be in failure mode.
Good luck -
I can't decide is this hardware or software problem.
Sorry my bad English.
1 month ago I buy iPhone 6 16 GB. It was iOS 8 and i use last firmware now(8.1.3). But this annoying problem still same. I don't know how I will describe. I have 570 songs and it's all purchased on iTunes. When I use music app after 3-5 min starts annoying lag and it continues to increase as long as i changing volume and song.
It's really annoying. I mean this's iPhone c'mon.
Am I the only? Are your songs stored on your iPhone or in iCloud?

TS2771 LCD screen shows double image, is this hardware or software?
I have a 4th Gen iPod Touch that shows a double image on the LCD. About a third from the bottom of the screen you see the screen image repeated. The iPod was never dropped so I don't know how this damage occurred.
I plan on replacing the screen, but I am worried that once I do, the problem won't go away. Has anyone seen this before? Do you know if the problem will go away with a new screen? Is this a logic board problem?
Thanks.Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still problem then it is likely a hardware problem.
I have no idea if it is a screen or ligic board problem. -
BSOD probs. Is this hardware or software
recently i have had BSOD (blue screen of death) problems, altho im not sure if its the software or the hardware. i play SOLDAT which is a C++ game that isnt full version yet, still beta. so i assume it could be that. aslo i am a Planet Side beta tester, again im not sure if its the pre-release software or my hardware, i get a blue screen. i used to have errors on it but now its just blank. i will mess with resolotuion and try to get one. but could software cause this
If you haven't already done so, run Software Update to see whether there's a firmware update for your model. Failing that, call AppleCare.

Can anyone help me with any suggestion?
Thank you in advance!Go to the Apple Store - it's rather difficult to solve those kind of problems on these forums as they may be hardware or software related. Apple will be able to run diagnostics not available to mere mortals.
One thing that you'll want to do before taking your machine in is to have a backup. Whether Time Machine or using one of the cloning applications (personally, I use both Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner).
Good luck,

My macbook pro (August 2010) keeps freezing when apple mail starts up. This happens every 2nd time I turn on my Macbook Pro. This forces me to hold down the power button to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a fix? Thx.
since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

My computer has been spontaneously restarting itself. This last time I wasn't even at the keyboard, I was across the room. I don't know what to make of it, completely baffled. I'd love some help on this, and if it could come in layman's terms I'd love it even more.
Hi ...
Try Troubleshooting the MagSafe adapter
If the Mac freezes, it may be a preference setting.
Check System Preferences > Energy Saver
See if Restart automatically if the computer freezes is selected. If it is, deselect that box. -
MacBook Pro Restarts: How have people fared in getting apple to fix this?
So, I have had trouble with my mid-2010 MacBook Pro restarting because of a problem: black screen, restart, then white screen with the "problem" notice. I have read all the threads and problems that people have been having, and everything points to the video card or logic board.
I have brought my computer to the Apple store twice now for this same issue, once within the three year repair window, and most recently a few months beyond that deadline. The first time I was led to believe that it was the RAM, and I replaced (and upgraded) the RAM through Crucial (their recommended RAM), and replaced the HD as well. It continued to happen, though having a child decreased my screen time and thus decreased its instances to have some of that fade in my memory. After some more heavy use, and multiple restarts during one session, I once again replaced my HD (because I hadn't learned anything apparently), and upgraded to Mavericks. 35 seconds into my first session after a day of restoring my computer, it restarted and I scheduled an appt at the Apple store.
They took my computer, ran tests on the RAM and the video card, and after about a week told me that it must be a software issue. They reset (took out and reinstalled) my new HD and my RAM, and gave a full reinstall of Mavericks. I brought it home and rebuilt my HD using Time Machine, avoiding anything system-level and bringing over only apps, music, photos and documents. And... it persisted. I have since used process of elimination, swapping out my RAM, to learn that it is indeed not the RAM... its something in this computer.
After that long story, what do you recommend for my next trip to the Apple store? Can anyone point to a good approach, or an additional point of contact, to help me get this thing fixed for free? I did bring it in within the 3-year window, they just mis-diagnosed it. They seemed to suggest that their hands were tied... I saw there was some mention of people having success outside the 3-year window and I would love to know how.
Many thanks.Anonymous UUID: XXXX
