MB shuts down only it doesn't

My MacBook has a tendency(once a day to once a week) to keep running when I shut down normally. I can tell because the case stays warm or if not pluggen in then the battery goes flat in a few hours. When I try to start it up again - nothing. I have found that removing the power cable, battery and holding the power button down for a few seconds, then reinstalling the battery solves the problem. I do get a little missive saying my computer shut down unexpectedly and please tell Apple about the situation. I do, but I have heard nothing. Anyone else have the problem?

Are you closing the lid before the computer fully shuts down? If you are, the computer has a tendency to hang in a sleep/awake limbo cycle, which will cause the computer to run down the battery, become hot, and cause you to have problems when you try to restart it.
When you want to shut the computer down, make sure that the display and fans are off before you close the lid of the macbook. You may also want to notice if the sleep light is on or not.

After installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro and my MacMini can't shut down, only a grey screen and finish. Must be killed by the power button. Why?

same here...  sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't!!

  • Shut Down bug reproducable - Macbook appears to shut down when it doesn't

So, I've run into this issue 4x now, and it's the same every single time.
The bug - when you shut down your Macbook, everything appears shutdown, but in reality it's not, your batteries get drained, and a bad day at work ensues.
    How to reproduce the bug.
First - have your macbook running normally.
Connect your external monitor, USB Keyboard, and USB devices.. etc.
Close your Macbook lid to force it to sleep
Turn on your macbook using your external keyboard.
This will allow your external monitor to become the primary screen for your mac - While your macbook stays closed and acts as a desktop.
Now through software methods go and select Shut Down.
The macbook will shut down everything and will appear shut down.
The light will stay on however. So if you open the lid, the macbook won't turn on. Once you close the lid, the light will go away. At this point it time, it really does appear as though the macbook is shut down. But it's not!
And you find this out the morning after you wake up.
-- To get around the issue, you essentially just turn your Macbook back on and shut down again. But it's rather annoying when you're in a rush.

I've been having the same problem - and its not just with the Macbook. I've found several times that I'll go to shutdown my Macbook and the finder, dock, menubar will all vanish - as for shut down - only I'll be left with the wallpaper and spinning sticks. I've left the system for several minutes (5-10) and it still won't shut down so I have to force it to shutdown with the power button. I had exactly the same issue with my 2007 silver iMac the other day. I've also found that my Macbook will appear to shut down and not have done so it drains the battery. I've reset the PRAM on the iMac and still get the issue. Haven't tried with the Macbook I must confess.
I have a local version of iDisk on my desktop and often find they refuse to shutdown even after I've cancelled a sync. I wonder if the problem may lie there?

My screensaver seems to be freezing and I can't access Safari. I've tried restarting/shutting down and that doesn't work. Any ideas to help?

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.

  • Whilst working on iMovie my screen has frozen. Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off but asks am I sure. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas?

Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off computer but message appeared asking 'am I sure'. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas? I was dropping multiple  clips into my movie/project when it happened.  It has been frozen for over an hour now. I can't hear the driving doing any work.

Thanks a lot. I had previously held the power button down and up popped the 'are you sure' message whhich provided a shut down button to press but it didn't work. Thanks for you help. I'll have a look in iMovie now to see if I've got any corrupted files. Thanks a lot

  • MacBook pro won't shut down only after sync with iTunes?

MacBook pro stays on blue screen with spinning gear when I try to shut down only if I have synced either an iPhone or iPad with iTunes. If i have not synced with iTunes the shut is ok.
Any suggestions would be great :)

I had the same problem and just fixed it.
    What I did:
    - Launch Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Verify Disk
Let the Verify run until it's done
    - If you are seeing any error try the Repair disk
It's possible you need to restart (holding cmd+r while restarting)
    - Next I did a verify disk permissions and a repair disk permissions
    - reboot
After this the shutdown issue was gone!
Hope this solves your problem as well.

  • Photoshop CS4  shuts down only when creating new project.

I've had CS4 web premium since nov. 08 and everything worked fine until the most recent update from adobe.
I ONLY have this problem with Photoshop cs4: when creating a new project after selecting the aspects (name, width, hight, etc.) when you press ok it shuts down and no error is given as to why it shut down, it just does.
opening documents that had been created prior to the last update isn't a problem, I'm able to do everything Photoshop cs4 has to offer.
I can also open a file started in another program and edit them in PS CS4 (ie: fireworks , or AI).
but for some reason if I want to start a project in photoshop it just shuts down, never used to happen. any clues? any one else have a similar problem and know how to fix this?
    running on windows XP

I think you mean a new docuement - Photoshop doesn't have "projects".
Photoshop shouldn't "shut down" - there should be some message about a crash.
And the most likely causes at that point are OpenGL (try turning it off in prefs) and your default printer driver (try changing default printers).

  • Mac Mini shuts down without warning, doesn't want to re-boot again

My mini is only 3 months old. I upgraded to 2 gigs of Ram when I got it (saved about a hundred bucks). It seems to be overheating and shutting down, problem is it happens all the time. When I try to restart it, I must wait until it is cold to the touch otherwise it will lock-up and I have to manually shut it down again. I have tried raising the mini up a little to try and get some extra air underneath but no luck. Should I take it back/get it serviced?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is it just coincidence that several people are finding this issue arise at this point in time or has an update affected it (not that I've updated anything on it recently other than installing the new version of Inquisitor for Safari).
It's just coincidental I think - and given you've not updated anything, it is therefore not an update-related issue. However, the way the G4 mini's cooling system is designed, it's entirely possible for many things to potentially contribute to escalating heat issues in the system. In the first instance, the systems tend to collect dust and debris inside and around the vents as a result of the way the airflow is directed, so cleaning can be helpful. A strong vacuum cleaner used around the vents at the base and on the back can remove a lot of material and help system cooling. There's also potential for the CPU heatsink to become dislodged if the system has been opened or subject to movement or vibration, or for the thermal paste between it and processor to degrade, reducing efficiency of the heatsink. In addition, there's a thermal pad squeezed between the underside of the logic board and the base of the casing, designed to help draw heat from the CPU and dissipate it that way. The pad can deteriorate - it's a service part so can be replaced. Add to that the possibility for the fan to fail, and for any combination of the above to occur, and you have a number of scenarios in which an otherwise healthy Mac mini can begin to show thermal problems.
In your situation, I'd start by cleaning the system out. If you've previously opened it, I'd say do so again and take some time to ensure that all dust and debris is removed - blowing through the system can be sufficient for that. Also check the heatsink is secure and that when running, the fan is actually spinning. If you haven't previously opened it and don't want to try, try the vacuum cleaner method on the vents to see if that helps.
If those steps don't help, then it becomes increasingly likely the system needs some service attention, and the thermal pad and paste become likely culprits.

  • Can receive mail, it takes a while. Will not send mail, tells me sending 1 of 1, but never sends. Try shutting down and restarting doesn't help. What do I do now?

Can receive mail, but it takes a little while. Try and send a email but it never sends, bottom left corner says sending 1 of 1 but never sends. I've shut down and restarted iPad but that doesn't help. What to do to correct this and what is the cause?

In that case your email provider's server is having difficulties to deliver the message to the recipients email provider server.
This has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.
There is little you can do though. You may have the recipient to check with his email provider if they have any issues.

  • IMac 2010 randomly shutting down, only reboots when power cable is unplugged and replugged

    Specs
It's a stock 21.5inch iMac mid-2010, with the addition of some extra RAM - two more 4gb sticks bringing it up to a total 12gb - that I've had installed for roughly 6 months with no problems.
No problems with my Mac since we bought it from the Apple Store until the last couple of days when this started happening. I don't have AppleCare and obviously I'm out of warranty.
    Problem
Seemingly random shut downs. I've tried to work out if it's to do with overheating, but I've been playing some graphically intensive games today and that hasn't killed it. The strangest thing is that most of the shut downs are when it's not even in use - the next time I sit down to use it it has been turned off.
I don't think this is a software problem as it's been happening on the OSX and Windows partitions.
Nothing happens when I press the power button until I unplug the power cable, wait a few seconds, plug it back in again then press the power button. This makes me wonder if it's a problem with the power cable? Any tests I could run?
Any ideas? Tests I can run? Or is it a lost cause?
    Thanks in advance!

After further testing, it seems to only be powering back on if I leave it unplugged for about 20 seconds. Is this something to do with resetting the SMC?

  • G4 won't shut down only restarts

I've been using the comptuer without a battery & it was working fine. There was a blackout on Saturday, though computer was not on at time. Sunday computer worked fine, but printer didn't work. When I went to shut down computer it just restarted.
Bought new battery today. Reset PMU & installed new battery. Started computer with only keyboard & monitor attached. Worked OK & shut down OK. Then reattached perpherials & now won't shut down again.
What should I do? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Fish

Thanks for the input Hatter. Can you tell me how to do the fsck -fy procedure or tell me where to find the directions?
For the longest time, when I read " fsck -fy" I actually thought the writer was politely swearing. I really have no idea what it is or does, but found some sketetal instructions in the discussions, so tried it. But I don't have enough info to do it correctly.
I am more in favor of reset nvram from inside Open
    Firmware
    cmd opt of
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
which I think does a better job dealing or clearing
corrupt nvram or device tree on MDDs and later Macs.
Also, I have no idea what you are talking about, where or how to do it. Open Firmware?? Is this something I open up? where is it? etc.
Now that you mention it, buying a new hub makes sense if your other suggestions don't work.
I hope I hear from you again. Thanks for your help. Fish

  • IPod Nano shuts down randomly and doesn't restart unless connected

This happened to me two days ago. I was working on a pool listening to a podcast, with the iPod in my pocket. I was wearing black pants and it was very hot, so I'm not sure if it's simply an issue of overheating, but what happened was while I was listening to the podcast the iPod completely shut down. I took it out of my pocket and tried to reset it holding the menu and center buttons, but the iPod wouldn't respond to this. The iPod was completely charged the night before so I'm sure this isn't an issue. I took it home and hooked it up to my computer and it worked fine. But today, it did the same thing, listening to the same podcast (TalkRadar) and wouldn't respond to the menu and center buttons again, but it responded to plugging it in to the computer. Something else happened, too, the iPod would turn on and off randomly even while connected to the computer and I would have to unplug the iPod and re-plug it back in. Does anybody have an idea of what the problem is? I want to know whether or not I should send it in for repair.

If resetting or restoring the ipod does not work, take it to an Apple Store. Let the staff examine it. If you have Apple Care, call them.
