MB went to sleep at 50% battery, woke up at 1%...  Rogue process?

So i stepped away from my Core2Duo macbook for long enough that it went to sleep automatically. When i returned to it, i tried to turn it on, however, it wouldn't budge. i picked it up to take it to the power connector in another room and i noticed that the processor area was rather hot, almost like the processor was being utilized.
After plugging it in the power, i turned it on and the macbook recovered from its sleep mode and the battery was at 1%. When it went to sleep it was at about 50%.
Now my question is, what could have caused this drain? Can a process still run while the macbook goes to sleep? what do you guys think?
thanks,

I've had something like this happen before, but it wasn't something that happened all the time, just once or twice. you said that you did not put it to sleep manually, so I'm thinking there was a process that was running that prevented the CPU from sleeping. is it happening all the time, or just once? i'd recomend checking what processes are running in activity monitor and seeing if there i anything using alot of the cpu that may have drained it.
good luck

Went to sleep at 63% and woke up dead! Is it possible to return 4S and just use my 4 or am I acting to soon? The fact that I'm not always home and don't get to charge as much as I could scares me. I need my phone for alarms and meeting in the morning but waking up to it drained is not good at all!

I had my iPhone use 20% of power an hour before I did the following.
1.) Turn off iAds and diagnostics in location settings:system settings.
2.) Turn off Calender in Notifications
3.) If you have any exchange mail accounts ( I had 3 Gooogle accounts one set for mail and calendar, 2 set for mail only. remember when setting Google server m.google.com or it won't push to the phone.) delete them REBOOT your iPhone then redo them then Reboot one more time.
Result: iPhone batt usage is now 4% an hour. my phone went for 19 hours with moderate (streaming, surfing, recording and viewing movies on camera app) on wifi use before getting to 5%

  • Last night I went to sleep, and when I woke up, my iPhone was just turned off and it doesn't want to get any power.

My iPhone doesn't want to get any power; it was perfectly normal, and last night it just turned off by it self with 43% of battery.

Plug iPhone in with Wall Charger for 10 minutes, iPhone may turn ON itself. If not on, then keep on Wall Charger and Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart, may take around 20 seconds of holding both buttons.

I have a WD Passport HD attached to my Mac. When it was last connected it went into sleep mode and ran out of battery. Now I cannot find my HD in Finder and Disk Utilities is telling me it cannot repair the HD. I can see the HD but the volume part is greyed out. Any ideas on how to recover my data?

There are other methodologies of scanning a HD
which involve data extraction, but loss of metadata is often the result if the directory is corrupt.
Metadata is the info on what the data IS.
Like having all your papers thrown in the air, its all there, but just a giant mess.
This is why you always always must have several external HD redundancies of your data.  One isnt enough, neither is two really.

  • It Went To Sleep And Never Woke Up

For Christmas, my parents bought me a 4GB Silver iPod Nano. I've used it quite a bit since then, I believe right now it's holding 85 songs. Anyways, last night before sleeping, I was listening to it. I was done with it, I set it to sleep, put it into the charger, and went to sleep.
I wake up this morning, the power has blinked on and off a few times. I pick up my iPod, try to turn in on and...nothing happens. My first thought is that the battery is dead, so I re connect it and wait for my computer to detect it...it doesn't. I open up iTunes to see if it shows my iPod (named Donnie's iPod) as a device, it doesn't.
So basically right now I have a rectangular silver device that is supposed to play music that is just sitting here taking up space. Now, if it is important, my computer specs:
    Dell Dimension 4600
    Intel Pentium 4 Processor
    Roughly 4 Years Hold
Relatively New Hard Drive, Replaced in July of 2006
    Windows XP Home Edition
The only ports I have availible for use are two which are in the front and I have tried them both, neither appear to do anything.
So is there anything I can do besides replacing it?

    Try these.
    My iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
    My iPod won't wake up.
iPod touch-wheel is unresponsive after waking from sleep.
When restoring the iPod, it's recommended to put it into disk mode first.

If none of the above help, it may need service, or you could go to an Apple store and have them check it out.

  • MBP doens't start after it went to sleep (battery discharged)

    hello,
when the battery is nearly emtpy the macbook pro goes to sleep until you connect the power cable... It worked until last week...
Yesterday after the mbp went to sleep i tried to start the mbp (with the power cable connected), nothing happens.
It doesn't help to remove the battery, the only thing I can do is to wait until the battery is charged to about 50%... but this is annoying and I don't like such workarounds.
Thank you & Greets from Italy

I found the solution to my problem!
I used in the last weeks the macbook power adapter instead of the macbookpro adapter (I thought they are equal). Now with the power adapter from the macbookpro everthing is ok.

  • My computer went to sleep and never woke up!

twin g4 867 MDD went to sleep at its scheduled time (2AM) The next day it would not wake from sleep as far as i could tell. Unplugged it, plugged it back in and i get startup tones but no video feed. HD's and fans are spinning. anyone have any ideas? Monitor burnout? graphics card? (i have a a nvidia gforce ti) im running tiger with all the updates, and an apple 20in cinema display. THANKS!!!
    G4 MDD Twin G4 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25Gig Ram, G-force Ti graphics card, 210Gig HD space

    Hi,
If everything is spinning, it sounds like the graphic card is not working correctly. That particular video card has been known to do that. If you are familiar with your MDD, try taking the card out and re-seating it, then restart. Unplug the computer first.
Go here to see instructions in removing the video card in a MDD Mac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26259
If that doesn't work, you'll have to locate a new/used video card that supports your ADC connector on your monitor and try that. Finding a loaner from a friend would be ideal.
    Tell us what happens,
    Regards,

  • My Macbook Pro won't turn on properly.  It was perfectly fine when it went into sleep mode earlier on today, please help?

Closed the lid earlier on today and my macbook pro went into sleep mode.  about 12 hours later i opened it and the battery was dead.  Plugged the battery charger in and pressed the power button.  It boots up, disc drive works and it sounds the same as it would working perfectly fine.  Keyboard works and there is noise coming from the laptop when i press certain buttons like the volume etc but the screen isnt working.  Unable to enter FireWire targert disc mode to fix the sleep mode files which is what i think is wrong with it but i don't have a FireWire and i don't really want to be playing around with my macbook's internal files incase i accidentally touched the wrong thing.  Does anyone know what could be wrong?  Should i just take it to get repaired and let a specialist repair it?  Anything i should know about/be doing/not doing?

Plug it into a power oulet & then reset your SMC:

  • My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically. Any thoughts?

My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically (I had been trying to open it just before by clicking on a song file in my Documents window, and that's the song that started playing when the pc woke up). I went to my iTunes Help and clicked Updates/download iTunes 10.7 twice, but got nothing. Now, Im wondering if I should downloacd the entire 10.7, or whether that would overwrite all my files, erasing my songs. Anybody know? Thanks.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

  • External disk no longer works after notebook went to sleep

I have a one week old hard drive I'm using for Time Machine. It's a Seagate 5400 RPM 250GB notebook drive. It's connected via Firewire. The drive was working just fine until the notebook went to sleep -- when I woke it back up, there was an error on the screen saying "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory." I tried power cycling the drive and the notebook but now all I get is "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and the only options it presents are Initialize, Ignore, and Eject. Obviously, Initialize is right out, as it contains my backups.
In "Disk Utility", when I choose "repair", I see:
    Verify and Repair volume “disk1s3”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I see the same thing when I choose "verify" (perhaps unsurprisingly). If it's unable to check the journal, is all hope lost? Is this something I should expect to happen periodically when the computer falls asleep?

I was thinking about it: actually, it may not have gone to sleep. The screen went blank, but the drive had power the whole time. (It has a blue LED that was on throughout).
Updated the Subject, although I don't know if that'll carry up to the index.

  • Macbook Pro won't login after sleep (sleep with low battery -- mac turned off maybe it's called save sleep)

Macbook Pro won't login after sleep (sleep with low battery --> mac turned off maybe it's called save sleep)
So if I hit the powerbutton my mbp booted like it is booting from the save sleep (so very fast and the login screen is there in about 10 sec.and there is no apple logo while booting just the desktop screen in "unsharp" ore foggy however...)
Then when i see the login (if the keyboard backlight turned on) i wand do tipe in my code but it won't work... the trackpad is not working; and when i plug-in a usb mouse the mbp is not powering on the usb-mouse (laser is off)
    Why is that this way?
Is there n option to wake up the mbp fromm deep/save sleep without haveing issiues after that?
    THX

Sorry for such a long delayed response...
I was able to get to an apple store this past weekend, and let me tell you... I'm about finished with there great "support".
Right before I went to the store, I tried to eject a disk. Well the cloth in the SuperDrive (I assume to protect the drive from dust and such) Pulled up with my disk. So I get the Apple store, describe my problem and what happened with the cloth piece. The "Genius" writes up a form and tells me they have to run diagnostic and it will take a couple days... and I will get a call when its done (1-3 days).
Well on day number 3 I called up the store and they told me it was ready to be picked up? I asked if anything had been fixed and they told me they could not reproduce my "sleep issue", so they couldn't fix that.. but told me the cloth piece in the SuperDrive had been fixed.
I drive an hour (one way) to the Apple store to find that all they did was PULLED OUT the cloth... they did not replace it! So basically I have a hole for a Super Drive.
I asked why I was not called to say that my computer was ready to be picked up... didn't get an answer on that one.
I asked why my SuperDrive was said to be fixed, when nothing was done... they told me that it would have to be sent out to the factory store for that to be fixed (FIRST TIME THEY MENTIONED THAT!) Oh, and that would take 5-7 business days. Well that's not going to happen right now considering I'm a college student that NEEDS a working computer!
So I go home, angry... start just putting all my important documents back on the computer. And the screen starts blinking!!!! I guess now I have the same thing described in another post on these forms...
Lets just say that I'm not very happy with Apple right now! If anybody else has success on either the sleep issue or the screen blinking issue, please let me know!
    Thank you!

  • My MacPro went to sleep in another language and now I can't Login

I DESPERATELY NEED SOME HELP.  I had been working in a language different from my default keyboard when my computer went to sleep.  When I tried to resume by typing my password, it would not accept my usual keystrokes.  I assume that my computer is still in the other language.  I tried restarting, but that didn't help.  I don't recall typing my password in the different language so as to have changed the password to the other language characters.  I thought I set-up a keyboard shortcut for changing languages.  I think it is "command + space" and deleted the shortcut for "Spotlight."  Yet, when I try to change keyboard languages at login, there is no change.  My current situation is that I am locked-out of my computer because it rejects my password.  PLEASE HELP!

What is the other keyboard you were using?  If you provide the characters of your password, perhaps there is a way to make them with this other keyboard.
When you have access again, go to system preferences/users & groups/login options and check the box for Show Input Menu on Login Page.

  • Hi, I turned my macbook pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to use the volume at all! I went to system preferences sound output BUT everything is light grey and it some-how looks like I don't have permission.

Hi, I turned my MacBook Pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to turn up or down my volume. It comes up with all the volume bars and a little circle sign with a diagonal line in the middle, like a stop sign. I have gone to system preferences > Volume > Output BUT all my volume preferences have gone all light grey and wont let me access them.
    Anyone help?

  • IMac clock in top right shows time Imac went to sleep briefly when waking

I have Lion which came with my iMac, this is my second iMac as my last one had a hardrive issue. Whenever I wake my iMac from sleep the display clock shows the time the iMac went to sleep until it connects to the Internet via wifi, has anyone experienced this issue? I had this happen now and then in Snow Leopard on my older iMac but it seems to have crept back in to Lion for me constantly.
