MBA 11" gray screen, requires hard restart

I've read the threads on MBA problems, and mine seems different. No kernel panic. No flicker.
I have it plugged into an external Samsung monitor, no probs. And suddenly (typically during idle periods), it goes gray. Unplugging from monitor does no good. I have to do a hard reset.
Anyone seen anything like this?

Hi, Were you able to resolve this issue? My MBA also has the same symptoms--the screen just goes gray and the computer needs a hard reset. No kernel panics, nothing in the logs. This happens totally at random times. Sometime it freezes again within minutes of rebooting--it happened while I was drafting this! I have the latest upgrades. I took it to a genius who tested the hardware and said it's fine. Following some suggestions on the discussion boards I have reset the NV/PRAM as well, but that didn't help.
This is my first Mac and I really want to love it but this issue is so irritating and makes the device unreliable as well

  • Stuck on gray screen on warm restarts

I just wanted to add a data point to the problem of getting stuck gray screens with warm restarts.
My Mac Mini 3,1 (early 2009) started arresting at the gray screen with the logo upon warm restarts. If I shut down entirely and waited for a while, or if I unplugged the mini for a few seconds, it would start up fine and work normally. I tried replacing the hard drive (it was due for a bigger one anyway) and installing Mt Lion from scratch; but that did not affect the problem one bit.
I took the Mini to the local Genius Bar, and when we couldn't reproduce the problem, I noticed we were using a VGA cable with an old monitor. My Mini was hooked up with a Monoprice mini DVI to DVI cable at home. When I got home, I swapped the Monoprice cable out and replaced it with an Apple mini DVI to DVI adaptor connected to a standard DVI cable, and my Mini runs like new. It also runs 10-15 degrees Celsius cooler. I postulate that the Monoprice cable was stressing the video chip and causing other problems.
I'm bummed because I was all set to get a new Mini or iMac.
I hope this helps someone out there.

I got a message from Monoprice's returns department verifying my shipping address; so I guess the lifetime warranty applies. I'll see if the problem goes away with a new Monoprice cable; but the computer is running like a champ right now.
I'm not totally happy about that. I was getting pumped about needing a new computer; and how I'll have to put off the upgrade until the current Mini won't handle OS updates.

  • IMac runs slow intermittently; occasional freezes require hard restart.

Recently, my iMac (27", mid-2010, OS X 10.9.3) has begun intermittently running very slow, with occasional freezes requiring hard restarts. I've been keeping activity monitor open and notice that multiple Google Chrome Helpers open (4-5 of them) with each using 98%+ of CPU capacity. Not sure if they relate to the slow response time. They are sometimes open in the activity monitor, but response times on the iMac are normal. Then, suddenly, the iMac slows to a crawl, with 15-45 second beach balls, sometimes followed by complete freeze and crash.
Any suggestions for diagnosis and trouble-shooting?

  • Out of nowhere i get a black & gray screen saying to restart

this has happened 3 times since ive gotten my 12" powerbook less than 3 weeks ago. just out of nowhere, doing normal tasks, i get a black & gray screen that takes up most of the screen. it says to press and hold the power button to restart the computer. why is it doing that? the only thing i can think of is my ram, cuz i upgraded it. but i ran the hardware checker from the installation dvds and it said everything was fine. nothing wrong with the ram or any hardware. so how do i fix this and why is it doing this? im not sure whether i had these peripherials connected the other times, but i use a 250gb firewire hard drive most of the time. and i had a 160gb usb hard drive connected this last time (dont use a whole lot). this time i had both connected though.

    Steve,,
I've got an iMac G5 and have exactly the same problem. Mine started after I installed Tech Tool Pro. 4.5 update and eDrive. I took the eDrive off but it didn't help and start-ups were only occasionally successful (the computer was getting confused between my system and the eDrive's system).
I ran Tech Tools, Disc Warrior and Disk Utility - all from disc, but to no avail. I will always get the black and grey "crash" screen when the computer is cold, and may have to restart 3 or 4 times before the computer runs. Then it is unstable for 5 or 10 more minutes and may crash in the middle of any activity. Nothing seems to be lost in the crashes and I run Disk Utility every time I get the system up and running. It always gives me this message:
    Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
I'll check my hardware as was suggested by another user. Thanks for sharing your "challenge".

  • IPhone 5 frozen on black screen but "hard restart does not work

My iPhone 5 is frozen on a black screen and buzzes when i plug it in but when i connect it to my computer to attempt to reset it on iTunes, it does not appear on my computer. I tried a "hard restart" but my sleep/wake button is broken can anyone help

    Hello there, vsanfilippo2.
If you're iOS device isn't recognized at all on your computer, then the following Knowledge Base articles provide some great troubleshooting steps to follow, depending on the Operating System running on your computer:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
    or
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • MacBook Air (Mid 2013/Mavericks) - Freezes, requires hard restart

    11-inch, Mid 2013 MacBook Air.
Upgraded to OS X Mavericks in December 2013 - have downloaded every fix/patch as prompted by the App Store.
Relatively simple use pattern - word processing and web work. No bootcamp or 3rd party software, out side of Mozila products (that I am aware of).
Aproximately once every 12 hours (regardless of continuous use), the entire computer freezes. It does not take input from any input devices/including external keyboard and mouse (which I normally do not use). The only way to fix this is a hard-restart.
I have previously suffered from sleep/wake crashes, this is a new sympton of purpose the same problem?
Getting anxious as I approach my final exams - which are written on computers.  Apple - which specifically targets students and technologically unsavvy customers - has created a faulty product, unfit for the purpose for which it was sold.
Any suggestions on fixing or mitigating this problem?
My only thoughts have been a link to RAM use? I don't usually browse flash-websites or keep more than one word processing window open at once.!
    Many Thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    Help appreciated.

Well, this is back with vengeance.
I've tried removing the Telestream software and the BlackBerry software and I still get a blank screen randomly. The last one happened last night when I tried to download AppCleaner to make sure all files from the above programs had been removed. As soon as I clicked 'download' it went blank and froze.
This is persistent, and the annoying thing is that I can't get it to restart when I want. I tried pulling out the power cord for a while, several PRAM resets, Safe Mode, try to get into recovery disk to check the drive, etc, etc.
Sometimes a few PRAM resets seem to work, other times it will go into the recovery disk, but most of the time it just seems to randomly boot up again after not working for ages. I can't find a pattern and I've tried this many times.
At the moment I can't get it working. I've just removed some Crucial RAM that was installed to see if that helped, but to no avail.
Bugging the life out of me.

  • IMac Suddenly Plagued with Freezing (requiring hard restarts)

I've owned Macs for years now and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen my machines freeze enough to where I couldn't recover and had to hard reboot it.
Now, after having my iMac for probably close to a year it's suddenly freezing over and over. It first began the other day after about 15 minutes of being on the computer (only had Safari and one other program open), I restarted and within a couple minutes it froze again. Restarted.. froze again within like 15 seconds. I've never experienced anything like this on a Mac (brings back awful Windows memories)..
Anyone more computer savvy than I have any clue what this may be? Doesn't seem to have anything to do with programs since it did it with absolutely nothing running. Hard drive maybe? I recently reformatted my system, would another reformat help at all?
    Thanks guys for any help,
    Jordan

It did once freeze while I was booted from the disk (I held "c" at startup) and as it came up it froze. However, it never did that again and I did reformat and install OSX again last night using that start-up disk and it didn't freeze at all during installation.
Yet, low and behold after 10 minutes of installing updates once the new OS was done installing it went to this all grey screen suddenly (same color as when you boot up a mac), freezing there.
Hard drive still you think or maybe video card? I hope this isn't a $700+ repair
Edit: oh by the way the hardware test I did was the one where you hold "D" on start-up, the hard-drive test was ran both from the bootup disk and while in OSX, both said HD was OK.

  • Mountain Lion locks up after sleep, mouse is frozen on screen, requires hard reboot with power button

I have a 2007 Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz macbook pro with Intel 320 160gb SSD installed, and 6GB of Patriot RAM. Machine was working perfectly under Snow Leopard, NO ISSUES AT ALL FOR MONTHS!
After installing Mountain Lion the computer frequently locks up, requiring a hard reset holding down the power button.
The lock ups occur about 10-90 seconds after waking the computer from sleep. Everything will appear normal, i can click through some appliations, start typing somewhere, reading an article, or start watch the ipad mini launch video on apple.com, doesn't matter. Then all of a sudden the computer is just completely locked up. Nothing on screen is working, the mouse isn't even moving the system is completely locked up, and does not recover even if left for several hours. I have checked the logs and there's no sign of a kernel panic.
I have tried creating a new blank user profile, reinstalling from the recovery partition, and the issue persists. I've basically stopped closing my computer when i can avoid it, and the rest of the time i have about a %50 chance that i'll be able to work when i open my computer instead of having to do a hard reset.

With the 2007 macbookpro the optical bay was IDE. One of the upgrades i had made was an IDE to SATA adapter that held another sata hard drive in place of the optical drive(which had died). Even though this setup worked flawlessly under snow leopard, the IDE to SATA adapter seemed to be causing some issues with moutain lion when resuming from sleep. After removing the adapter and second hard drive, i have not had the computer lock up on me since.

  • Macbook Pro Stuck at Apple Logo (gray screen) and keeps restarting

I've a problem with my Macbook Pro wherein it keeps getting stuck at the Apple Logo upon restarting (no spinning wheel). It eventually restarts itself maybe after 5 minutes but still keeps getting stuck in the grey screen where the Apple Logo comes up.
I've tried restarting this with CMD+R  to do a "fsck -fy" and here's what I keep getting (attached picture). This screen eventually exits and my Mac restarts itself and gets stuck at the Apple Logo (grey screen).
I think this maybe a HD problem (possibly some corrupt files). Any suggestions/similar experiences? Any chance this can be resolved without reinstalling OS X?
    Thank you!!!

  • My iMac freeezes when I am on Pond5 website. Requires hard restart. Mac OS 10.6.8. Why?

It did it with Firefox 4 and now 5. Regularly as I am on the Pond5 web site, the screen flashes with partially garbled images and locks the computer. The rainbow wheel spins, but it never comes back.

  • FROZEN SCREEN, no hard restart possible

While watching a YouTube video, my iPad froze. Holding down SLEEP button does nothing; nor does START button, or holding both. Any suggestions?

After some searching around, I found this answer on apple.com/expert:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.

  • Imac I3 hangs, 3 long beeps, pause, 3 long beeps, etc - requires hard restart to clear

Recently added two 2-Gig memory sticks (now 4 of them).  One of the adds does not show mfr or serial number, but does show "OK"
No other changes, but beeps don't stop until reboot.

I think yoy still hve some bad RAM.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.
