MBA 2009 won't boot: single low tone or three low tones are heard

And out of the blue, by MBA 2009 does not want to boot. I rebooted it, but after the boot at the FileVault screen the mouse was unresponsive (never happened before). So, I did a hard shut down and after boot, I got a low tone which is repeated every 2 seconds or so.
I tried resetting SMC (Shift-Ctrl-Opt-Power, release at the same time), but no luck.
I tried without the MagSafe attached and I got a series of three tones, repeated after 2 second or so. After a few tries with/without MagSafe, it went back to the one-tone.
This must be something very deep in the hardware that is amiss. Does anybody know what it could be?

  • Xserve early 2009 won't Boot

My Xserve early 2009 won’t Boot , No Video , Activity LEDs Flashing :
Xserve begins to power up but does not boot
Fan array and hard drive are spinning
    Power LED is illuminated
Top row of activity lights flash
    No video on external display
My server was stored in the original box for 12 months now, when I reuse it, he presented the above problems
Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you, Khashoggi. Reseating the ADM's did generate a different result in Disk Utility. The mirror had a state of "degraded" after reseating because one of the drives had an error. I began a rebuild but it was set to take 4 hours so I just re-built the mirror and re-installed the OS. I would have let it rebuild but it was a brand new instal; no configuration done at all so it was much quicker to just reinstall.
I've got the machine back to the state it was in before the issue and I've created both a Time Machine and Carbon Copy Clone backup of the System in case of further issues.
    Thanks again!

  • Mini 2009 won't boot but will boot holding option key...

My mini early 2009 with OS X 10.8.2, won't boot normally, it will show a black screen after a while then will appear in large letters this:
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.
So, I unplug the power cord and wait a minute and re-plug it, then I press the start button while holding the "option " key down until the screen becomes grey and there I have the choice to start with the Macintosh HD or the Macintosh Recovery 10.8.2.  So I choose Macintosh HD and it boots fine.
After the above, everything is fine.  I used Disk Utility to repair permissions and everything was OK then I clicked on repair disk and again everything is ok.
But the problem is still there each time I start the computer.
It started after I opened Boot Camp Assistant to check my Windows XP partition which the icon disappeared from my desktop.
What are my possibilities?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi RRFS,
as you mentioned: In System Preferences under Startup Disk do you have your Mac HD selected? Did you lock it in (bottom left the little lock)?
The lock was open on the lower left.  Using Disk Utilities, after a few Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk and downloading the Mac OOS X 10.8.2 Combo update and the 10.8.2 Supplemental Update, then again Verify Disk Permissions and Verify Disk, everything was OK.
So I started again the computer normally, but it took a longer time to boot, then my Desktop came back normally.
So, the problem has finally been solved for now.  Now, it's the latest 10.8.3 update.
Thanks for trying to help with a question.

  • My iMac 27" from 2009 won't boot up, it gets stucked in the apple Logo..

last time i used it the screen turned grey and there was a window saying that i should force shut down the computer by holding the power button.. I haven't installed any software lately, and after i force shut down the computer, i left the computer, and when i came back it was stucked in a blue screen.. From that moment it never boot up again, i've tried everything, from safe boot, to resetting pram and still it doesn't boot up. WHAT DO I DO?
P.S.: i can't take it to the apple store because in my country there is no apple store, i live in venezuela...

Since it appears that you are running Lion (10.7), have you attempted to boot into the recovery partition?
If you are able to boot into the recovery partition, there are many ways you can try to try to be able to boot back up.
You may need to repair the disk permissions, and verify the disk.
If that does not work, you can also try reinstalling the OS, which would preserve all data. Restoring the OS is done through the recovery partition.
    Best of luck!

  • Mac Pro 2009 won't boot after airport installation

Hey everyone, looking for some insight here.
I recently bought a Mac Pro 2009 running Mavericks (at time of receipt). It didn't come with an airport card so I purchased one to install myself. The Mac was running fine until this evening when I finally got around to installing the card, however since then it won't get past the grey boot screen with apple logo. I've tried disconnecting the airport card to see if that reverted it, but no change. I also can't boot into safe mode, so that's no good. The only thing I can do is bring up the giant padlock with the option key held, which I saw elsewhere was connected with a firmware password (my admin doesn't work).
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It wouldn't be much of a lock if you could circumvent it with advice from a forum.
Obviously a valid point, although possibly somewhat niaive where forums are concerned (no disrespect intended).
It was more an expression of frustration than anything else, to be honest, though. It's kind of absurd that this happened following a simple hardware upgrade. Most people I know aren't even aware they can set a firmware password, so basically what it means is don't upgrade a machine that's intented to be upgraded (I'm aware of the hyperbole here).
Looks like it will be a Mac store trip, though, yes. A pain in the arse since even my nearest authorised technician is miles away.

  • M'y iMac 27 inch (end 2009) won't boot with a IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 error , after a graphic crash

Hello everybody. First i'm french and my english is so bad, excuse me for my language !
Ok i've got a iMac 27" buy in the end of 2009, with ATI Radeon HD 4850. I'm photographer and i use this mac for Lightroom and Photoshop first. I never have any problem with this mac but last week, during my work, my screen freeze. I restart with force the machine, and after the logo apple, many strange pixel and vertical straigt white and grey. You can look a capture at this link (https://www.dropbox.com/s/g45a6act347j7u0/photo2.JPG).
So i restart my mac and i try all solution and the boot : C touch, D, Option, NVRAM, verbose, single ... always freeze with the strang pixel. The only way who work is the Shift touch : Mac OS X Mountain Lion started but so slowly and with graphic acceleration problem, no video youtube, no flash on the web.
So i did my backup with tome machine and i wanted to reinstall the OS ... but the Option touch at start up don't work ... i try the cmd+R command and it work !!! Mac OS Mountain Lion downloaded, installed and my iMac work !!!!! Yeahhhhhh ! Everything works .... one day !!!! On my facebook page, the bug come back, screen freeze. I sream a lot, and i restart by force the iMac and now, the big problem ...
Everytime i restart my iMac, when the apple appears ... some line of code appears and talk about kernel and driver. I take a photo of this message at this link : https://www.dropbox.com/s/mfbb5q5p93neirt/photo1.JPG
I tried everything i know and every couple of touch at startup : C, D, cmd + R, cmd+option+R+P, option, T, S ... i'm lost in this problem, i can't reinstall the OS like the first bug, i can't enter in the single mode, i can't boot on a usb key or a Dvd, i can't use the target mode in order to repair or format the hdd ... I am in the world of apple since 9 year, and it's the first time i have got a problem with the apple device.
After reading and search on french discussions, some guys say to me that it's maybe a graphic card problem, or a RAM problem .... i don't want to bring my mac in a store cause i don't have enough money .... i am freeze, like my iMac, and i can't work the wedding photo !!!!
Maybe someone can help me ? And please, use an english very easy for me, i don't speak english since the school !!!!
    Thank you evertbody.
    Sebastien, Toulon, France.

So, some news ! I finally format the HD by the disk target mode with an other iMac. After formating, booting from a USB key to install Mac OS X Mountain Lion: Install Mac OS X Lion Mountain successful the computer starts correctly , without display bug , no lag , no loss of fluidity ... In short, I think I have solved the problem. But after a few minutes of use , the screen is frozen , the machine is blocked , the computer no longer met again. And after a forced reboot , I end up with the same lock screen with colored pixels and vertical lines (photo this screen: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7qvv8fobjpstf8t/ecran_complet.JPG , photo zoom here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/wyvsoog79jkg8fq/zoom_ecran_complet.JPG).
After going through some forums , it seems that this is my ATI Radeon HD 4850 that is failing. Is it your diagnosis? What will be the budget required to repair an Apple Store? Can I expect Apple a gesture of goodwill (purchase or repair) , knowing that my iMac is covered by any warranty ?
Cordially, thanks a lot for your answer, maybe one !!!!
    Sébastien

  • Mac Pro 2009 won't boot.

    Hello,
Since yesterday my computer simply refuse to boot (Mac Pro 2009, Quad-Core 2.93 with a flashed Radeon 5870).
It was working fine the day before, I shut it down, unpluged it and when I came back the following day it wasn't working anymore.
When I try to boot it I can hear the fans but not the starting "DONG" it should do.
I tried to replace the graphic card with my old ATI 4870, tried to switch with some old RAM I had and tried to disconnect my hard drives one by one but it did nothing at all.
The only thing I have is this red dignostical LED you can see on this picture. I tried to find it's meaning but I wasn't able to find anything.
It would be nice if someone was able to tell me what this LED meant (and even nicer if it wasn't something expensive to replace !).
    Thanks !

    Hello once again,
So, I finally had time to look a little deeper into this processor board and after removing the heatsink and cleaning the processor I noticed two little plastic screws (the ugly little red arrow on the picture I took from macbidouille.com, not the nice and big one) maintaining another heatsink on the board.
I'm not sure what is the component under this heatsink but one of these screws was broken (they aren't really screws but I don't know how to explain in English) and the heatsink wasn't correctly positioned anymore so I replaced these two screws, put everything back in order (with some thermal grease on the processor and the unknown component) and everything worked like a charm when I was done.
Thanks everyone for your help !

  • My 27" iMac (2009) won't boot OSX from the internal drive

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning.
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo.
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

You have a serious drive issue that likely can't be repaired that way.
Follow the data recovery efforts here, your drive still works and thus data can be recovered, won't be easy
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3172
If you have your data off the machine, to a storage drive (or earlier with TM)
then hold command r keys and use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Partiton with Zero option, and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers.
use the same name (important), different password ok Software Update fully
install your programs from fresh orignal sources and return files into their respective folders
once your stable, read the backup proceedures here etc.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 won't boot OSX

Since today i have a strange problem booting into Mac. This is how it started out:
I was inside of Mac, and decided to reboot to Windows, to play a match of MW2. I forgot to use the ALT button, so Mac was already booting. I used the on/off switch to turn it off before i started it again. This time i did use the ALT button, and i booted into Windows. I decided later on to boot back to OSX, and it didn't give me any problems.
I wanted to mount a DVD ISO file to watch, and when i mounted it my user account got logged off. I logged back in and tried it again, same problem.
I decided to reboot the system, but this time something wierd happend. Along with the Apple logo i got a grey progress bar, wich went till about 25%. After this bar dissapeared it was just the Apple logo with the rotating gear, and it didn't go any further.
I tried using the installdisk to repair my OSX partition, but whenever i try to repair i get the following:
    Repairing volume completed.
Updating startup support partitions where necessary.
Error: Diskaid cannot repair this disk
(original messages were in dutch, so in translated it. Could be different from the english messages)
Diskaid also shows my OSX partition as grey, instead of the normal black. I can't seem to be able to activate tis volume in Diskaid
After this i tried running Apple Hardware Test, and it didn't give me any errors.
The strange thing is that Windows(bootcamp ofcourse) runs fine. It's Mac OSX that cannot boot.
I don't have backups, and no Time Machine either. Is there a way to get my OSX back up again without having to reinstall everything? Especially because of certain installed Audio Units. I don't have the original license codes anymore of same AU's, so it would be a real pain if i need to reinstall this again.
    I'm using this mac:
    MacBook Pro 15"2,66GHz mid 2009
    500GB 7200RPM Hard Disk
Hope you can help, i really need this one to be back up as soon as possible!
    Thanks in advance!

    Your options are:
    1. DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. Or,
    2. Erase & Install

  • Mac Mini Server (Late 2009) - Won't boot from Windows USB/DVD

    Hello all,
I have a Late 2009 Mac Mini Server (Macmini 3,1) with OS X Lion.
I have created a Bootcamp Windows Partition on one the 500GB Disk using Bootcamp 4.0.
After the partition is created, I have tried installing Windows 7 using the Bootable USB method as well as using the CD Drive from the attached SuperDrive.
But all I encounter is either the blinking cursor or after the "Starting Windows" logo, a BSOD.
Any tips/help on how to proceed?
    Thanks in advance.

    Cattus,
    Thanks for the reply.
I did use BC to create the USB stick. I also tried to create the USB on a WIndows Machine (just in case). But still can't boot from USB. What's the WIndows Utility you mentioned?
Also, according to the this LINK, The firmware for Macmini 3,1 should be MM31.0081.B06 (EFI 1.2).
However, the BOOT ROM info on my mac mini says MM31.00AD.B00 and I can't seem to update the EFI Firmware. I get a message "This computer does not need this update" when I try to run the MacminiEFIupdate.pkg

  • Mac Mini Early 2009 Won't Boot After Mavericks Update

I had Mavericks installed on my Mac for a while now and recently, it did a software update... Since then, I rebooted the system when it asked me to and it has not been able to boot up since then. It reaches the Apple Screen, tries to load the OS and my Mac shuts off Completely...
I recently upgraded the Hard Drive on the system, so I am currently using my old hard drive running OS X 10.5.8... I plugged in my Hard Drive that has OS X Mavericks on it and I tried to verify the disk. When I do so in Disk Utility, I get this message:
I went on a couple of websites where people had this same issue, and I followed the instructions where someone said to open Disk Utility, select the Partition and Press "CMD + i". I got the name of my drive from Disk Identifier. I opened Terminal and typed in "sudo /sbin/fsck_hfs -yprf /dev/disk1s2"
It ran the code and this is the output...

After all of that was done, I am now able to go back to Disk Utility and Completely Verify My Disk.
What should my next step be? Should I try booting to Mavericks from that hard drive or should I try to Repair the Disk?

I upgraded to Mavericks, and had a "grey screen of death" when re-booting for the first time.  Re-setting the PRAM fixed it for me.  Worth a try:

  • Mac Pro early 2009 won't boot after running 1.8.2 update

It even does not get into recovery mode. A grey screen with dots appear.

Hold down the Option key at Startup.  This invokes the Startup Manager, whose code is all in ROM. It will then draw an Icon for each potentially bootable drive.
If there are defects on the screen during this process, you probably have a Hardware problem.

  • MacBook Won't Boot just on AC.

My recent issues are power related.
Won't boot. Reason: Dead battery at 0 mAh.
Won't boot with dead battery even on charge...
When I take out the battery, it won't boot anyways.
I got lucky since I plugged it in when I left it off charge for the night, and went away about 10 minutes, and it boots. Now that won't boot it up... I take out the battery and tried to boot it since I know it's dead. Nothing.
I have 2 MagSafe adapters (One is OEM and is spliced (Charges and fine), and another is not OEM (stupid eBay lied) ) and when I remove the battery to boot just on AC power, nothing. Tried both chargers, both plugs, 2 tips and extension cable, Nothing.
I noticed the light is a dim green when I plug in my OEM charger to my MacBook.
So how can I get it to boot on just AC power? Noone I know has any type of Mac...

If your MacBook won't boot on just the AC adapter, and you are certain the AC adapter is not damaged, then there is a hardware issue with your computer that needs to be repaired.

  • IMac G4 won't boot, go into target mode, or verbose, or single-user.

    Hi, I am completely flummoxed.
Yesterday I had my iMac G4 networked (via FireWire cable) to my MacBook Pro. I was copying about 14 GB of data from the MBP to the G4. The MBP indicated the copy operation was finished, but the G4 went into a spinning beachball, from which I could not escape -- couldn't force-quit, change applications, open terminal, or anything. So I (reluctantly) did a hard power-down.
When I went to restart the G4, I got a grey screen of death -- for about 2 minutes. Then the screen goes black for a second, then goes grey again, this time with the alternating folder-and-question-mark icon. Bad news.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    * Won't boot into target mode -- if I hold down T at startup, the screen stays black (never gets to the grey screen, or to the FireWire icon).
    * Won't boot into single-user or verbose mode -- if I hold down cmd-S or cmd-V, computer stays grey.
    * Won't boot in safe mode -- ditto.
So my next idea was to try booting from a startup disk. But how to open the optical drive tray? (This is a tray-loader, not a slot-loader.) I pulled down the white external door manually, but do not see an emergency open pinhole inside. But there must be one, right?
Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can break into this thing, or what might have gone wrong with it?

I'm not at a G4 iMac right now, but other tray-load drives of that generation had a hole but ti's very low in the opening. Probably need a good light to see it.
Try starting the computer and holding the mouse button down while it's trying to boot. This is a startup shortcut to open the drive but may require that the system start to load, something with which yours is obviously struggling.
Does the iMac have the original Apple keyboard? Some third-party keyboards may not support the startup combos for safe mode, single-user, etc.
