MBA Blacking out (sleeping?) randomly

I have a new '13 macbook air. Over the course of about 2 weeks it's had this unusual behavior about 8-10 times where I will be using it and it will just go blank. It appears to be going to sleep while open and in use. I then have to wait 10-15 seconds for it to fully sleep and wake it back up by mashing keys. At this point it returns to the locked screen. After entering my password i'm right where I left off with no apparent loss of state.
Does anyone have info on this?
Thanks

Take a look at this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5118135?start=0&tstart=0
I'm actually getting my 13" swapped on Thursday for this. Unfortunetly, from others that have had thier machines swapped it seems they are still experiencing the issue. I'll update the thread above when I get my new machine on Thursday.

We also took the battery out and tried using the power cord. It still blacks out. We hear a fan if you hold down the power button and then hear a beep and computer starts up sometimes. Most of the times it's black or blacks out. We reset the PMU. That didn't work. We also had Apple care until Dec. 22 and they said they couldn't help us even though we have been trying to get in the store and no one is ever available to help us. Exactly the same thing is happening to mine, it blacks out at random, usually if it's moved slightly. Mine wasn't part of the battery recall though. Battery life is dropping alarmingly fast as well, I'm getting about an hour and a half out of it now. The only change I've made is to put in an airport card about 6 months ago but the problem only started in December

  • MBP Start-Up: Blacking Out

Having some issues starting up my MBP. Typically what will happen is that it will pull up my desktop image and my desktop icons, with the exception of my Windows drive, and then the screen goes black, and the fans come on full blast. Sometimes it will happen after I get the Windows drive loaded and I'm checking my email or something. Sometimes both drives load at the same time, and I know it's going to black out on me.
Generally I can start it up if I do a PRAM reset or (forget what it's called) pull the power supplies (a/c and battery) and hit the start button for 10 seconds. Btw, booting with the OS install disk doesn't always work. Sometimes it will still black out on me.
I also reinstalled the OS and ran the hardware check and saw no problems with either.
This is driving me nuts. Any ideas or suggestions?
This is a 2006-ish model who's never given me trouble. I'm not working, so I don't have cash to hit up the geniuses, so any help is truly appreciated.

Let's try a few basics first:
Check Software Update & make sure you have installed all the available updates that pertain to your OS & battery. Check out the following thread: Apple notebook batteries – maintenance and troubleshooting>
All good on the updates front. Plus ran AHT, and memtest. Both reported that everything was okey dokey.
Boot up from a new account to see if the same problem crops up.
Created a new account. Same problem.
Check your LogIn Items. Get rid and/or disable the ones you do not need.
Got rid of everything, but the problem persists.
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.
Did both repair disk and repair permissions. I also did an archive and install of the OS.
If you have any utility CDs, boot from them & run the various tests.
Yes, like I said, I ran AHT.
See Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
I frequently perform SMC and PRAM resets during start-up (aka "fight and cry mode")
    Please post back w/results.
    Good luck!
Thanks! Other than what's listed above here, I've also cleaned up the caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner and run Onyx a few times to futility. Also, now the black-outs occur randomly, not just during start-up. In fact, I just had one a moment ago(!)... but if she's been in use for a while she tends to fare better, as opposed to start-up, which takes quite a bit of time.
I'd also like to mention that these are seemingly not kernel panics. That is to say that I don't get the typical kernel panic 'please restart' screen. I just go to black and the fans spin. Additionally, there is nothing in the system log that corresponds to the time of the crash.
Help/advice/more suggestions really appreciated. I'm also happy to post my system log (or any other log) if that will help diagnose this. Most of it is greek to me. (Erm, okay, all of it is greek to me )

  • Random laptop screen Black out / Turn off .

     Hi,
first of all my laptop is : HP Pavilion dv6-6160se Entertainment Notebook
    to the problem now
A few days ago my laptops screen started  out of a sudden shutting down/turning black( no lights at all ). This was happening while using the laptop at random. The screen  had no lights, and if i use a flashlight on it there is nothing. like its turned off completelly.
Before this happens. Ths behavior varies. Sometimes it flickers from my desktop to a black screen then back on and some times not. Most of the times screen changed to a radom color (green mostly) then becomes black/shuts down.
NOTE: The laptop keeps runing, i can hear the videos playing so it probably isnt a gpu chip or gpu issue , music and games.
I searched the web for all kind of reasons that this could happen and tried some of the fixes .
Here are everything i tried and all or the details i could accumulate in past coupe of days:
    1. If the screen flickers , blacks out and then turns back on i get a message that gpu drivers have stopped working and recovered (  on both amd and intel ).
    2. If the screen blacks out, on rare ocasions if you close the laptop lid and let the laptop go to sleep , when waking up screen works again ( noticable due to screen moving)
    3. I tried installing 4 different drivers all with clear install. ( didn't work)
    4. I tried to  to recover system with restore point. ( didn't work)
    5. I tried to lower the screen brightness. ( didn't work)
    6. tried this trick:
    Turn off laptop
    Remove battery
Hold the power buttong for 30-45 seconds
Plug-in the charger ( dont put the battery in )
Turn on laptop and see if it works.
    Very Noticable details:
    7.  Since  on of the rare fixes requires to move the lid  i tried shaking the screen a bit or pushing it slightly to different directions. This actually  does the trick and turns the screen back on ( i am right now typing  this after using this "trick"
So, with this one as a hint there are a couple of stuff i have in mind but i am not sure  and need help since i am not a technician.
    a) There is a loose LCD cable and when i type a little vibration moves it and ends up in a black screen.
    b) I read that if you use a flashlight and you cant see  your desktop it means its a bad inverter.
    c) Can the inverter have a lose cabe instead of the lcd ?
That's all the feedback i could give you that i can recall now.
Currecntly the screen looks ok ( maybe its the certain angle it has after i moved it  so i would aprecciate a fast reply before  it goes black again
EDIT: Tried to play a game for a few mins and i got the black screen again. Closed the lid  so the laptop goes in sleep mode then opened it and it worked. Just for the records.
EDIT#2: Just tried to play a game again. got the blackscreen, shaked the screen a bit and it worked but for the 1st time i get the message " Application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" , Can it be that its the GPU after all or maybe drivers?
EDIT#3: Tried to play a game again and it seem to trigger the issue . ( i am currently running the laptop with only the intel drivers installed)
    thanks in advance
    Sincerely,
    Ntas
P.S. Please feel free to ask me any question if you need more information, i am not a laptop expert but i know   more than the average person
    This question was solved.

    Hi @Ntas
I have read through your post and it seems there are a couple of possibilities, and I noted that you have already tried several of the things I would normally suggest.
I will however post some of those links anyway for you to review, it is always possible there may be something in one of them that may have been missed or may inspire an idea of the cause. Since you mentioned that sometimes just moving the screen will cause the problem or make it disappear, that does seem like either a loose connection or maybe something like pressure on a part of the display causing the issue.  Of course that last part may just mean the display is on its last legs, but hopefully not.
First I will give you a link to the service manual, to help you check the connections. Just be careful to read the sections on precautions, to protect yourself and to prevent any other damage. This manual is also useful in that it lists all the compatible parts, so if the display is defective you could use this guide to help order a compatible replacement if you choose to do so. • Why does my ipad 2 screen keep randomly blacking out?

Ipad 2 just screen randomly blacks out. As I type this ? it has done it twice!

First thing to try is a reboot of your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't correct the problem make an appointment at an Apple store to have the iPad looked at.

  • Firefox 4 blacks out and distorts sections of the screen if I scroll on a website, navigate the bookmarks or sometimes just randomly.

Firefox 4 blacks out and distorts sections of the screen if I scroll on a website, navigate the bookmarks, at the addons/extensions menu or sometimes just randomly. Occasionally this causes it to crash often with the rest of the computer (no crash report). The previous versions of firefox all ran fine.

I seem to have fixed this by setting layers.acceleration.disabled to true (In about:config). I assume this is something to do with graphics hardware acceleration but I am not sure what the wider consequences of changing this setting are. Nothing seems to be going wrong so far though.

  • IPod Screen Randomly Blacks Out, Pauses/Resumes Music

    The short of it:
My iPod (80 GB, 5th generation) randomly pauses and resumes playing music; screen also randomly goes completely black (not dimmed, but black) though iPod still appears fully operational (can still hear the digital "clicking/turning" sound of the wheel if I scroll).
    The details:
A few weeks ago I did something I very frequently do - plugged in my iPod to my PC, synced it up via iTunes, and ejected it from iTunes. Only thing the least bit different was that this was the first time for me to hook my iPod up to iTunes since adding an iPhone to my collection and having synced that iPhone up via iTunes. Not sure that would matter, but just some additional info.
I then proceeded on a several week long vacation. I pulled out my iPod, hooked it up via the AUX jack in my car to the car's audio system, and immediately noticed problems. Songs would just randomly pause and then resume play. I confirmed this wasn't an issue with the earphone jack (since I know the iPod was designed to pause music when the earphones come unplugged). I looked at the device itself and began noticing that the screen was randomly blacking out though the iPod was clearly still "working" - this was happening whether I was invoking the wheel on the iPod or just holding the device.
Since I was on vacation, with hope of easily getting this resolved, I stopped by an Apple store. A tech there did a Restore of the device via iTunes through their Mac setups, and that made no difference. The Apple tech said my hard drive had gone bad, though I'm not sure I completely believe that. (I've heard stories before of people being given that diagnosis when really that wasn't the case.) I'm willing to replace the hard drive myself, but I don't want to go through all that just to find out that's not really the problem.
I got home, hooked the iPod back up to my PC via iTunes. iTunes immediately recognized that the iPod was previous formatted by a Mac and so proceeded with doing a format/restore for the PC. Still, problems persist with iPod.
I've run the automatic diagnostics on it (M25 Diagnostic 0.7) and it completed with no errors, green screen.
I didn't drop it, damage it, nothing. It's in practically new condition. Apple tech said that something people with the iPods that operate on hard drive storage (as opposed to memory storage) more frequently experience are problems with the hard drive because they wear the iPod when they exercise, and those hard drives don't take the rigorous running movement well at all. Not the case with me. Most "exercise" my iPod's gotten is a leisurely walk. Its usage (in order of frequency): flat beside me as I listen to music; hooked up via the AUX jack to my car's audio system as it sits in a cup holder; hooked into an external speaker via USB out.
Any help you all can offer to confirm the problem or resolve it would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to fix it on my own (assuming repairs are not cost prohibitive), but just want to be sure I'm not wasting money buying the wrong parts or trying to fix something that simply can't be fixed.
    Thanks gurus!!!

    Someone? Anyone? Help, please...

  • BLACKOUT - iMac 27" Randomly Blacks out

My screen turns off randomly (blacks out), in order to get it to come back on i have to do a hard reset. (Hold down the power button to turn it off)I HATE to do this had to do it 3 times.
When this does happen I'm not doing anything that is demanding at all, listening to music and surfing the internet.
I have the latest firmware for the 27"...before the update I had no issuses.
Temperatures do concern me, although it appears that all temps are with in safe thresholds.
If temp is not responsible what is? My iMac is 6 months old!!!

Updating my last post:I get the blackout without the restarts and tried all the suggested remedies on these forums with no relief. I can see light from the grill covering the ram access port so I do not think it is fully shutdown but my # week old iMac will not respond to any wireless input devices so I must press the power bottom on the back to restart It which it does in a normal fashion. The machine does not seem to be running hot (much cooler than my black Mackbook) . I guess I will be bringing it in but I do not feel optimistic given the posts by users who did so and did not get a fix. I think this issue will take some time to resolve. I just wanted to add my two cents.

  • HDX16T LCD Screen flashes then blacks out, quick to sleep and out brings it back...

I have an HP HDX16T-1200 CTO with the 1080 edgeless disply.  All of a sudden the screen has been doing weird things.  While it is working fine, it will start to flicker or flash a little.  Sometimes that just goes away, and sometimes the screen then blacks out.  To get the screen back, I have to close the lid (put the computer in sleep mode), then open it again.  Sometimes it is fixed for hours, or a day... and sometimes it is fixed for 3 minutes.  Please advise, thanks!

    Hi snwbuny721,
If your screen is black but sounds still work and your phone still appears to be responding, you may have inadvertently activated a feature known as Screen Curtains (part of the Accessibility functions). You may find the following information from the iOS manual helpful (pg 126):
Turn the screen curtain on or off. Triple-tap with three fingers. When the screen curtain is on, the screen contents are active even though the display is turned off.
