MBA closer to MBP? -  Config advice and questions.

I was recently configuring a MBP, and anxiously awaiting the Back to Mac Event to see if there might be incentive / improvements to wait for purchase or perhaps go with the MBA. I was really hoping for TRIM support on the MBP. Now in consideration of the MBA release, just wondering (not speculating), if Apple may eventually just circumvent the whole SSD market and move all their products to an integrated Flash format.
The whole event has also brought the MBA much closer to the MBP and I am now considering if the MBA may be acceptable solution to my computing needs. Looking for feedback on if the following MBA config would likely perform well with the software / processing requirements and question listed below.
MBA Config:
# 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
# 256GB Flash Storage
Using:
Microsoft Office Mac Business Ed.
Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac (http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/)
Note: Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac has the following requirements (below ###). I can see the that MBA config meets these, but am really looking for clean and smooth performance with multiple OSs - XP, Win 7 (64 bit), Ultimate (64 bit), Linux distos (not all open and running at once, but each - or two at a time - being able to run efficiently in parallel with the Mac OS) - and some OS specific apps. So, don't want to see a large performance degradation and no system "hiccups".
It is the MBA 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that concerns me the most, then the 4GB RAM (would like 8GB RAM).
Parallels requirements:
# Any Macintosh computer with an Intel processor (1.66 GHz or greater). To run 64-bit operating systems in virtual machines, an Intel Core 2 or higher processor is required.
# Minimum 1 GB of memory, 2 GB of memory is recommended.
# About 500 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop installation.
# About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine.
Any idea if PGP and the 256GB Flash Storage would be an issue - for any reason?
I don't have any problem going with a MBP (especially with 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, with larger 17" screen). So, aside from the config vs "fit for use" question, I am also interested in trying to grasp how Apple is actually evolving - as of today. Seems like MBA is now likely the center of their Mac product line. I understand Lion will be out in summer, so just trying to see how others feel about MBA taking center stage and if they might consider it suitable replacement for MBP.
PS. the lack of backlit keyboard or glossy screen doesn't factor in that much for me (currently typing away, in dim light on glossy screened HP laptop).

I've been running a 1.86 GHz MBA with 128 SSD for a couple of years. Although I have Fusion installed, I boot Win7 using Boot Camp when I want/need to do anything more strenuous than surf the web.
I love the SSD and believe that it makes the unit run faster (but it isn't "instant on" like Apple's hype claims -- boot time is very quick, much quicker than Win7, but a cold start is, in no way, "instant").
I seem to recall one of the Mac blogs doing a speed test comparing the 1.86 C2D with the 2.13 C2D when that processor was first introduced in the MBA. Surprisingly, the 1.86 was actually FASTER in some operations; I'd be leery of assuming that the 2.13 upgrade is worth $100. Clearly, 4GB of RAM is a nice, and worthwhile, improvement for $100.
In summary, I don't think you really want an MBA if you need to do a lot of parallel computing -- running multiple O/S in parallel. The MBP you've spec'd will be FAR better for the tasks you describe.
Not saying I don't love my MBA; I do. But, as the saying goes: 'a man's gotta know his limits'.
I was itching for a faster processor and more RAM, and ready to buy a new MBA. But this Rev.A unit doesn't do it for me -- I don't see that it is a substantial improvement on my 2-year-old MBA.

  • General Advice and Question on Saving Book Files

I am still relatively new to FrameMaker. I attended a one on one course 12 months ago for two days. When I attended this course I was totally oblivious to the features of FM, it was totally foreign software. I had looked through the User Guide and as part of the course received Classroom in a Book. I have not spent a lot of time on FM in the last 12 months as I still have to produce manuals in the old format. The changeover is a huge project.
I have searched this forum many times and found the answers I have needed to many of my questions and learnt so much that I had not fully understood.
I would just like to confirm now with the users of this forum that I am going about my project in converting to FrameMaker in the right way and I have a question on saving books etc.
I have Operator and Service manuals for four machines (with variations between each machine and then variations between each of those basic models). Parts of the Operator and Service manuals are interchangeable.
I want to be able to single source my material and I am setting up an Excel spreadsheet which will breakdown each section of both manuals. Once completed when a machine is ordered the Excel spreadsheet will produce the details of the files needed to complete a book (manual). There will still be work needed on the book files before the manual can be produced.
My files are double sided with each Chapter starting on the right hand page and I am using variables and conditional text. The manuals contain columns, graphics, tables etc.
I have done test runs and have managed to accomplish the layout in PDF that I want for the final manuals which will be printed. I am only working on four machines at this stage, once this is set up others will be added or I may have to set up another lot of single source files.
Am I on the right track?
My specific question is that currently I use master files for each machine which are updated as needed. These files are then saved to another folder and identified by a Serial Number and Customer. The serialised files are then saved to PDF. I would like to continue this process as in the future the manuals for that specific machine may need to be revised (i.e. Rev. 0 to Rev. 1 and so on).
So basically I have all my single source files from which I produce a book file and save it to an appropriate folder which identifies its Serial Number and Customer. I don’t know if I have missed something very simple but I want these serialised books to remain as is, I do not want them updated when I make a change to my single source documents. I want to be able to produce my manuals for any number of machines from my single source without changing the book files that have already produced a manual. Is this possible?
    I am using FrameMaker 7.2 b144.
I hope this posting provides a clear view of what I am trying to achieve.
Many thanks in advance for any advice and answers that are provided.
PS This is the first time I have ever posted to any forums.

It sounds like you want to be able to open the book files and print without updating...
This isn't the case. Each book will need to be updated before output.
The reason is that your pagecount (and thus any toc, index, and xref's) will be different in each book and thus will need to be  updated.
The books will still need a opening and updating prior to output, but you could easily (cheaply) script that process so that you could batch output the books.

  • Replacing MBP screen - advice and recomended repair centres in London, UK?

The screen in my 3 year old MBP 15" is now so dim I can hardly see what I'm doing. Its got to the point where I either get the screen replaced with a new bright panel, or buy a whole new machine.
Having had a quick search on Google there are a few third party repair centres in London who could replace the screen with a new panel. The sort of costs I have been told so far are around £320.
    1. Has anyone else had their first gen screen replaced - was it a success and therefore worth the money?
    2. How much did it cost you?
    3. Can anyone recomend a repair centre in London who are reliable and professional. I don't want some kid with a screwdriver, ripping it to pieces!
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi
the best thing to do (if you had the time), would be to go into the apple store in london, regent street etc and see what they recommend i know they have their own place to repair ipods etc. (i can't recommend any as i have been lucky enough to not have to repair my ipod. but try these links.
    http://www.timeout.com/london/music/features/1788/iPodrepairtips.html
    http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&rls=en&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=wherecan+i+repair+ipod+inlondon&fb=1&split=1&view=text&ei=ZC4MSqObD46ZjAe9ueChBg&sa=X&oi=local_group&resn um=1&ct=more-results&cd=1
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=wherecan+i+repair+ipod+inlondon&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
http://www.kingipod.com/ 7 - 10 buissness days but thats in the US they are cheap and offer free repair diagnosis and if they don't need replacement parts to fix your ipod they won't charge you. AND YOU CAN'T BUY PARTS TO REPAIR YOURSELF off them. and i have heard people recomend them

  • How do I close the MBP case and NOT put it to sleep?

Is there a way to close the MBP case without it going to sleep? I like to allow items to download, etc while I close the case and leave the desk but it always goes to sleep.
Also, when it does go to sleep do I just push the power button? Sometimes this works, but it seems to respond slow.
    Thanks

Yes, I do believe that's what I implied.
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and enter the following command line at the prompt then press RETURN:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
If the reported mode is 3 then your computer is set for "Save Sleep" which takes longer to wake up than standard sleep. If you want quicker wake up from sleep you can change the sleep mode by entering the following command line:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
This disables Safe Sleep but will also slightly decrease battery life as RAM is left powered on.

  • Error 69 corruption fixing advice and further questions

a few months ago i started getting error 69. i consulted apple who told me to use their method. at first, i tried syncing but i had problems syncing as it would take way too long and i would actually fall asleep. i also noticed that if i tried syncing the same area again, i might find different files, suggesting that they had been skipped over or the corruption was spreading. i found 10 files and then gave up because the syncs took too long.
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine suggested i split them into groups and sync, which i tried.
at first i copied all artists into a a file of their letter, example:
    playlist 'A'
    -artist>>is>>(Name of artist)
    (repeat)
and for unknown artists, i rated them all with 1 star and listed it like:
    playlist 'Unknown Artist'
    -album rating>>is>>1star
i did this until all artists of one letter were in the playlist, as far as i knew. i also checked "only add checked songs" because the already found corrupted files were unchecked.
when the playlists were complete, i started the process. i would sync to the ipod while watching the top bar for the bad files. while doing this i noticed that the files did not take as long to sync as the first time i had tried. after, i would review all the files synced in the ipod to check if all would play fine. while doing this i found that sometimes, the ipod would make noises when starting a new song.
i found all the bad files i could find like that (101 files in total), deleted and replaced them all.
after doing this, i thought i was done, and attempted to sync all playlists. it was taking very long again and making very loud and weird noises. i tried calling apple but it was too late, so i researched and found something that said the newest version of itunes syncs faster. i downloaded the newest version last night, planning to call in, tell of these new problems, to find if they had anything to do with the corruption, and sync this morning. This morning i called and told of my syncing problems and asked if they had anything to do with the message. the apple expert told me that i should bring the ipod in to be looked at in an apple store and i am planning to do that soon. i then started to wonder if it could be problems with the ipod (i have and ipod classic) rather than itunes and my music files.
i decided to sync, feeling that most likely i had found all the corrupted files. the ipod was still taking very long to sync. i also noticed that there were only 2400 files in total being synced to my ipod while in total i have 2566. halfway through the sync, i recieved an error 69 message.
i decided that the error is probably within the 166 that i missed and proceded to change the smart playlist setup as so:
    Playlist 'A'
    -artist>>starts with>>A
i continued this for all letters and for unknown artists:
    Playlist 'Unknown Artist'
    -artist>>does not contain>>A
(repeat until all letters and numbers are covered, so that it would give me all songs who's artist's names contained no letters or numbers. i did not add symbols because i do not have any artists starting with symbols, therefore found it irrelevant.)
when i added up the contents of the finished playlists, i found that i only had 2556 song on the playlists which means 10 are missing. i have not yet proceeded to try and fix my problems again. instead i did more research.
after telling my full situation, and researching a bit, i have a few questions:
1.is there a way to categorize the songs into playlists that guarantees no songs will be left out?
2.what kind of corruption causes error 69? (note: the corrupted files would play on itunes and windows media player fine, but would not sync to the ipod. also, if a corrupted file was skipped, it would sync to the ipod, and not give an error message, but simply not play on the ipod.)
3.are there different kinds of corruption that causes error 69? do they have names? please explain them.
4.can the corruption spread? if so, how? through itunes? through my actual music folder? and how long does it take? (note: i keep my music sorted by artists, alphabetically, from A-Unknown. when trying to play on the ipod, i found MANY (about half) of my 'H' playlist would not play, meaning they were corrupted and had been skipped. i also found that if 1 song from a given artist was affected, 1-2 others usually were, and in extreme cases, all songs by the given artist. Also, these problems started around May-June of this year {2009} and i started using the categorization method in September of this year.)
5.could the problems have been caused by the ipod itself, meaning that all this work i've done was a waste of time? could they be fixed with repairs, or simply getting a new ipod? (note: in my research i have found people who claim that after repairs or getting new ipods, their ipods synced fine, with no problems. Also i have found people who claim that this is a problem with the ipod's timing, and if play/pause is pressed rapidly and repeatedly on the ipod itself when the error 69 message appears, the ipod will keep syncing, or that the error message can be bypassed by clicking 'OK' on it,right clicking the ipod sign on the bar that contains library, store, devices, and etc., clicking "Reset Warnings", and then clicking 'sync' again. Source: http://www.ghacks.net/2007/12/03/itunes-error-69-when-syncing-ipod/ )
6.could these problems be fixed by uninstalling itunes and using a 3rd party audio management software, such as Media Monkey or Fobar200? (note: there is a person who claims that this error is part of many 'traps' set up by apple and that by using a third party program, these errors become nonexistent, and all files will sync perfectly. Source: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/678275 )
Sorry for the long post but i wanted to get all information and questions down to get to the bottom of this problem.
Please help as best ash you can.

Doublechecking something. In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you tried running a chkdsk over the Hard drive that the songs are stored on on the PC?

  • Payment Advice and Payment Files

AT F110, i know it clears the open item line item and creates checks, but what is the Payment Advice and Payment Files that are created, where they will be created. How to see them. If it is to send to Bank how to send it. Please can any one eloborate.
    Satish

    Hi Satish
Payment advice is something you send as a notice to the vendor whoever is getting paid.  Generally when creating the variant for the payment program you would have clicked the 'payment advice' check box for it to be printed along with the check.  If you haven't clicked that, then please click that & you will see two pages, one with check & the other with the advice.
The second part of your question about files & how they need to be sent to the bank....if you are going to be sending for example ACH payment file to the bank, we need to use program RFFOUS_T to generate a file.  The variant for this program has to be configured with output medium as '0' & file identifier as 'A'.  But before that you need to make sure in FBZP -> House banks -> DME config there is something entered in 'Company number' field.  Once that is done, please check all the standard settings like the payment method in country, in company code, etc.  Also make sure there are bank details of the vendor in the vendor master.  Then if you do the payment proposal & check the box that says 'create payment medium' & then if you goto 'Environment -> DME Admin -> PAyment medium' in F110 screen, it will take you to a user screen & then if you hit execute it will pull up the file that you generated.  Then when you do the payment run, click on that 'create payment medium' box & it would have generated the actual file in DME admin screen.  This file could be sent to the bank from that DME admin screen.  Play with it for a little bit & I am sure you will understand that.
Award points please, if you find this useful.
    Thanks

  • SharePoint 2013 Snippets usage advice and help

SharePoint 2013 Snippets usage advice and help
I am new to SharePoint Site development.  I am creating a simple public website to look similar to their old one.
I have created a masterpage that looks OK using the design manager, and also a page layout. I have got the website looking half OK.
I seem to have difficulties all the time when it comes to snippets - and finding specific help on how to use each individual one.
So the main question - where would you advise I go to get help?
    The current snippet issue is:
      > regarding to top navigation menu
      > I have inserted one into the masterpage - and got it working
      > However it will not let me do submenus when I go into Edit Links
      > But I then went to site settings and did the edit links from there
      > It let me there - but it's a different menu !! (I now have two)
      > I can't see this second menu from within the snippets - it defaults to one that does not allow sub menus
      > So how do I change the snippet to look at the menu I was able to edit
But more generally - when I get this kind of issue, where to I look for the solution?
    Thanks in anticipation

  • MBP constant crashing and one very upset wife HELP PLEASE

Well I am at my wits end and I need some help, I am running a MBP, 10.7.1, stock everything, I have not upgraded RAM or HDD
I went out of town about 8 weeks ago and when I came back, tried to turn on my mac and it wouldn't come on.  I finally lion clean install and have been running fine every since.
Then the past week I have been experience several problem
1- I can not shut down my machine. I tried to logout, and then shutdown, this worked for a bit. It has stopped working. I have also tried to hold opt when I shut down.
I also check TOP in terminal before shutdown and kill any processes that may be hanging things up, manually quit all applications before shutting down.
Nothing I do works, is there a way to have the system shutdown with a terminal window open so I can see what process is hanging things up?
2- The larger issue is that my computer is constantly crashing, nothing shows up on the screen everything just locks up.
This is happening 3-4 times in the first hour of using the machine. It has gotten to the point that when I turn on the machine I let it sit for 15 minutes before I do anything.
I have tried to force quit things, but it won't work. I finally hold the power button for 5 secs and force it to shut down.
I checked add ons in terminal via it showed me
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
    it showed me
    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch (2.4.4)
    com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardACMData (4.20.00)
    com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardECMControl (1.26.00)
    com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardECMData (1.27.00)
I have also clean caches/ and so on to make sure there wasn't a bad file.
This morning I noticed that a crash report keeps getting written each day, the same exact one, I will post a copy below. I am new to mac's and just about had my wife convinced of them. She is beginning to loose that trust and is very upset with me. Please help!!

Thanks for all of your help, I thought that the USB modem was the problem. Unfortunately this is the only internet where we are.
Today I went ahead and found any processess that the USB modem was running and terminated it. Then I tried to shutdown, but it wouldn't again, I went through console and found this this. . . thoughts on what this could mean?

  • Can I use a 15" MBP as keyboard and screen to work on bootable drive MBP 17

    Hi, all,
I already asked this question in a post with other questions more prominant so I am trying this as a solo question. I have a MBP 17" intel Core Duo that will be going in for repairs. I have an OWC 1 TB drive formated to be bootable. Can I boot from the external HD from a 15" MBP Core Duo and use it essentially as a keyboard and screen and work on the 17" files with all the software or can I only transfer files to the 15"? The 17" has Leopard and Adobe CS3 (which I cannot do without) the 15" runs Tiger and I run CS2 on it.
    Thanks!

Can I boot from the external HD from a 15" MBP Core Duo and use it essentially as a keyboard and screen and work on the 17" files with all the software
    Yes.

Due to flash drive error on MBA my drive was wiped yesterday and OS re installed.  How to I get my bookmarks still on my iPhone back onto the mba

    Hi Nathanbeyondme!
I have an article that can help you with that question:
OS X Mountain Lion: Store your content in iCloud
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11421
    Safari bookmarks and tabs
iCloud keeps your bookmarks and Reading List the same in Safari on your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. On your Mac, Safari also uses iCloud to let you open tabs that are open on your other devices. You set up the Safari service in iCloud preferences.
If you are having issues with syncing these bookmarks, you will want to reference the following article:
iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Bookmarks and Reading List
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4001
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,

I am embarrassed to say that your solution answered my question.
I was about 10 min away from rewriting my Ant script to just use the mxmlc.exe directly instead of the mxmlc ant tag. I kept running into the -flex-config+=YourConfig.xml for the command line option but never saw the xml variant.

Does Flex have any documenation that shows all the different tags that are available like the Ant documenation?

  • Combining scored interactions and questions - navigation settings

I'm trying to get to grips with the way the Preferences > Quiz > Settings > Requried options work when my quiz combines both scored interactive objects and questions.
I'm currently using Cp4 but would be interested to know if Cp5 behaves the same.
Am I right in thinking that the effects of the different options are:
    Optional
The learner can scrub back and forth with the playbar as much as they like without restrictions.
    Required
The learner can scrub back and forth without restriction, but only up to the last slide with a scored interaction or question. To get further into the lesson they have to click any one of the previous scored interations, or submit a single question answer (wrong or right).
    Pass Requried
I couldn't figure this out at all! I set a pass score, had a load of scored interactions and questions, but the learner could scrub right through the slides with scored interactions into later slides that weren't scored. Ah well, good job I'll be using the LMS to manage pass/fail
Edit: Oh, it looks like this only comes into play if I select 'show score at end of quiz' - you can only ontinue past the results page if you achieve the pass score.
    Answer all
Learner can scrub to the end of any slide with a scored interaction or question, but to get to the next slide must either click the interaction or submit an answer (right or wrong). And if the next slide also has a scored object, repeat. Once they've 'unlocked' a slide they can scrub out and back into it in the same session.
    Any observations on that?
Obviously learners won't be able to scrub back if backward movement/review is disallowed.
Incidentally, I did notice that the point Cp locks the slide seems on 'answer all' to have some very odd properties. If I removed the pause from the click box, or the learner clicks play at the pause, then it carries on into a kind of phantom frame - with no captions or slide background - but the click box still works, if you know where on the screen to aim for!
Does anyone know a way to modify that locking frame to provide some info for the learner on what they need to do to progress?
    Thanks

    Hi BrightonJon
For the back movement there is an additional field. "Allow Back Movement" (or close to that)
Required only mentions that you cannot skip until you have answered
Pass Required means that you have to answer it correct to continue
    These are about single questions.
A locking frame often happens at strange places. I have it most often using advanced actions.

  • Ui configuration at run time using role config key and object type

    Hi experts,
Let me start by admitting that I am very new to the crm webui. I have a requirement in which I need to create a few z business roles and unique role config keys for them. And I have been given some requirements like below.
    - Access to Account, Service Request, Knowledge Article and FACT sheet data
    - Able to display all service requests.
below is the processing logic that I have been told.
Using the role config key, different view configurations would be created for respective components in
    the component workbench.
Based on the business role, respective role config key would be picked up and the corresponding
view would be displayed on UI.
In addition to this, in the IMPL class of the component work bench, DO_CONFIG_DETERMINATION
method could also be used to specify which role config should be picked up.
Do they mean that using same role config key, I need to create more than one UI configuration? I was also told by some one that I need to create the configuration according to ui objects and sub object and then inside the  DO_CONFIG_DETERMINATION methode, I can check the role config key and hard code the ui object and the sub object. But I do not know how to create them.
Could anyone tell me from where I can start and how to achieve this task?
I apologize if my question is very basic.

    You can do the following
    a) Go to the view you want to create a new configuration.
    b) Choose 'Copy Configuration' .
    c) There you would be asked to enter the Role Config Keys , Object Name & Sub Object Name. You can choose your own names for Object Names & Sub Object Name.
    d) go to DO_CONFIG_DETERMINATION. There based on your logic you can load the configurations this way
            IF (your_condition) EQ abap_true.
              CALL METHOD me->set_config_keys
                EXPORTING
                  iv_object_type          = 'your_object_type'
                  iv_object_sub_type      = 'your_sub_obj_type'
                  iv_propagate_2_children = abap_false.

  • PGW config backup and rollback

Hello. I'm about to update a PGW config. I'm writing the backup and rollback procedures. I understand that to perform a backup I must use the MML command "prov-exp" (which creates config.mml and trunk.dat files) and later the UNIX command "mgcbackup". My question is, if I make changes in the config and it doesnt work well, how can I perform the rollback? I understand I can use the UNIX command "mml -b config.mml" but that file doesnt have any "prov-sta" commands so I think that wouldnt work by itself, to return to the previous config. Maybe I need to issue the "prov-sta" command before issuing the "mml -b" ? Thanks in advance for your answers. Any comments about how you perform the rollback would be very appreciated.

Yes you are correct. Just add the prov-sta command to the top of the config.mml file and then a prov-cpy and prov-stp at the bottom.
