MBA mid 2011 Backup Strategy

I have a new MacAir (first Mac) and want to figure out an optimal approach to backups.
My plans are:
Use an external 500GB drive (small passport) as a SuperDuper clone drive and make it bootable. I would manually update this drive on a periodic schedule.
Use an external 1TB passport drive (would be my travel drive too) that would contain
Manual TimeMachine Backups
Data files (some to be copied from existing Windows PC)
Photo images
Drive 1 would be for catastrophic system recoveries.
Drive 2 would be for file recovery and data storage.
Is this a reasonable approach?
I read something about TimeMachine eventually taking over a drive. What does that mean?
Thanks
Mike

My attempts with backup software continues. I just want to do what I do with other backup programs. Do full backup and incremental backups on command. After so many incremental backups do another full backup.
TimeMachine is giving me fits. I did a full backup which took about 2 hours which seems OK. However, I did not catch it in time after the full backup and it started an hourly backup. I thought it would never finish. Once it finished, finally, I turned off TM. The full backup was about 2 hours and the hourly one was over an hour which should have been a minor backup since I was just waiting for it to finish.
In contrast, I did an incremental SuperDuper backup today in less than 10 minutes.
I have been told that I need both. SD for system recovery (which I needed this morning thanks to CUPS-PDF; it worked quite well). And TM for individual files.
I do not need all the overhead that TM has. I just need a simple full/incremental backup program that I can run on demand - one that is fast and quick. SD has a smart incremental backup feature, but I have not looked at how well it works for individual files since it is a clone oriented backup.
Any recommendations for something better than TM?
I guess I need to do some more research.
Thank you for your help.
Mike
I use Carbon Copy Cloner. You may want to give it try. I personally do not do incremental backups. Carbon Copy Cloner makes a full backup the first time and then only backsups files that have been changed or deleted but maintains a full backup and a bootable one. You can get it here:

Give it whirl, you may like it . . .

  • How can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?

how can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?
I just removed all data from main hd, and my network is not good enough to be able to download the os via recovery hd re-installing way.
in other words, is there a bootable [mac os x lion dmg] for my mba that I can download?

If you are looking for a download link for OS X Lion, I do not know of one. However if you really need the operating system you can buy a USB drive with OS X Lion on it, ready to boot. I think they're $69 at Apple's store. What I would do is contact AppleCare via the Express Lane or just call them and tell them your situation and then they will definantly have an answer for you to point you in the right direction.
    Good luck!

  • Best way to do a full backup of MBA Mid 2011?

What is the best way to do a full backup of my Mid 2011 MBA running 10.8.4?

My apologies for not clearly specifying purpose of full backup.
I would like to make a full backup of my MBA from which to restore in case of a problem. I am planning to do some clean up of my machine and want to have the ability to restore in case I inadvertently do something that will cause a problem.
Regarding Time Machine, I have had problems with that application and I am baffled by some of its behavior and lack of clear documentation of its terminology.
    OK.
The disadvantage of a clone is that it only contains a copy of the drive at the time the clone was made, so if you need to restore the drive the clone must be up to date. Carbon Copy can be set to incrementally update on a schedule of your choice (I do it every day). The update tends to be quick however as only changed or new files need to be copied.
Time Machine if used as designed will always be up to date, so it has an advantage for long term backup.
As a backup system a clone is not adequate on its own, it lacks versioning (the ability to recover an earlier version of the file than the current, or last backed up version)
I prefer clones for disaster recovery, and Time Machine (or a similar alternative) for backup, I also keep long term archives for files that I do not want to lose regardless of age.

  • Screen Tearing on Mid-2011 MBA with 10.8.5?

I've just updated my MBA Mid-2011 to 10.8.5, and have noticed consistent screen-tearing throughout. It's a slow phase that works bottom-to-top and moving any windows around shows a very clear tear (different accelerations either side, leading me to believe this is an issue with the double-buffering timing.) I am aware Apple have performed screensaver fixes(?) and am wondering if others have noticed a similar issue.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Open any windowed application (I used finder)
    2) Click and drag window header bar, moving in smooth circular motions
    3) Observe over 10-20 seconds this phase-line crawling up the screen breaking the double buffer paging
This wasn't here before, it would've irked me had it been before now. No idea how this'll be fixed without another update, as OS X doesn't really permit much in the way of display server configuration, but any suggestions welcome!

I didnt imply it was an SMC issue, but a diagnostic elimination step.
Ahhh, 10.8.5 ....  So I assume Apple let you install same as a developer of the YET TO BE RELEASED 10.8.4
Im afraid theres going to be little assistance HERE for that, ...on an unreleased OSX.

  • Will my new Macbook air mid-2011 be able to run the sims 2 ?

The specs are as follows :-
    Intel Core i5 @ 1.6 ghz
    64 GB SSD
    Intel integrated HD graphics 3000
    2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 288 MB
    Mac os x 10.7.1 Lion
I also tried my Sims 3 game, but it did'nt run, it used to stop responding when I was just getting them into the lot.
    Please help

    Hi Keith
Could you make the short answer longer for me? I am dying to play Sims 2 again after a year of abstinence. However, I also have only a maxed out 11" MBA mid 2011 now. I used to play Sims 2 on a Windows machine, so now I would need to buy all games a second time for Mac (which is quite expensive). Don't want to do that without being sure that it is actually "playable".
I honestly do not want to install Windows on my Mac because its space is limited anyway and I do not need Windows for anything else.
So you know for sure that Sims 2 is only available for Power PC?

  • MBA 13" mid 2011 start up issue after software update

I found that my MBA 13" mid 2011 performs not normal start up. When I'm powering it on after shutdown(or reboot) it start booting with clockwise gear screen but holds on this step for a minute or so and performes power off/power on. After this auto power on it boots normal. So each time after shutdown or reboot it begin to start, reboot, normal start - a kind of second time booting. I performed CMD+R restoration and reinstalled my Lion. All worked fine afterwards unless I performed software update (iTunes update + Thunderbold update + Security update 2011-005). It made second time booting again.

They will fix the software for you. Your alternative is to reinstll Lion yourself. If that's your wish, then:
OS X Lion- About Lion Recovery
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If there is no Recovery HD on your system, then refer back to the above-linked document.

Lcd Needs to Be replaced on macbook air 13 mid 2012 model a1466. Is an screen from MBA 13 mid 2011 model a1369 also compatible?

Well that's only a possibility, not likely. I'll stick with Mac as much as I can, which I imagine will mostly be ok. If I have to, I'll use their computers in class and do PC homework assignments from home on my more powerful iMac. The only thing I really thought about before buying it was its portability and the fact that I won't be using it for actual programming jobs after school. This is merely to get me through school.

  • What's the difference between MBA 13' mid 2011 and 2014 model?

Well so I bought my current MacBook Air 13 inch mid 2011 model about 2+ years ago. Recently the screen got cracked and it's getting slower so I'm tinking of buying a new laptop.
I looked at spects of the current 2014 model and my MBA from About My Mac but I don't quite know what's different. Basically it's faster and longer battery life...?

    Cool.
Which means it would be even nicer to play some game. I have no problem running most free to play games available for Mac on my current Macbook Air.
I think I am going to buy the cheapest option of MBA 13' so it will be 128GB SSD as I have now.
Well of course I will notice the difference if I changed from 2+ years old laptop from 2011. I would notice a difference even if I were to change to a brand new 2011 mid model
Anyway thanks for the response though

  • Battery performance of MBA 11 (mid 2011 model) - 3 hrs max

I get max 3 hours out of my MBA 11 (mid 2011). I was using Lion and now upgraded to Mountain lion. I did a clean instal after deleting the hard drive. But no improvement in battery performance. I don't keep multiple applications open, keep screen brightness about 65-70% and keyboard lit 10-20%. Program I use would range from excel, word, iphoto, vlc, mail, etc.
    Anybody having same battery output?

I'm having the same problem with my MBA (late 2010). It also is running incredibly hot with fan running continually. Never had those problems with Lion. Wish I hadn't updated. Hopefully they figure it out soon...

  • Mid 2011 MBA can't see Apple tv

    Hi There,
My Macbook Air is Mid 2011 running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and is unable to see a 3rd generation Apple Tv on the network in itunes.
Other posts indicate the Mid 2011 MBA is compatable with the apple tv and Itunes on my windows laptop is able to direct audio to the apple tv so what am I missing on the Mac?
    Thanks

    etaniajura,
    Things to check:
Both the MBA and the ATV are on the same network/subnet.
The ATV is updated to the most recent software.
Both the MBA and the ATV are signed into Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.

  • MBA 13" Mid-2011, Internal Speaker

    Hi ,
I have a MBA 13" Mid-2011. Purchased October 2011 from London. I started to have issues with Internal Speakers at June 2012 but it was temporary. Browsed internet, did SMC and PRAM reset, deleted Bazelservice.plist, did several time verify/repair disk permissions. Solved temporarily but problem arised again after a while. I still see sound icon at top right, I can use keyboard shortcuts, can see I increase and decrease sound but no sound over internal speakers.
Than purchased Moutain Lion, it was good for a while than same thing happened. BTW, during all these time I can hear startup chime, headphones work, infact at sound preferences output is headphones. I did several times insert/remove headphones, I used my Bose headphones too, if apple headphones are problem
, but it did not change output device to internal speakers. The thing is headphones do not work exactly, when I fully insert it I first hear a little garbage sound  with what is playing in iTunes or VLC but after a while, if headphones is fully inserted I hear echoed and little wrong rhytm sound. If I insert headphones halfway its ok.
Than I thougt there may be a upgrade issue from Lion to Mountain Lion, so backed up everything, format it and clean install Mountain Lion... No change still no sound....
I thought its hardware issue and took it Apple Service. They formatted and re-installed Lion and said, there's no hardware issue, infact it passed hardware tests. I said ok but I want to use Mountain Lion, I paid for it, what's the problem with Mountai  Lion and my MBA. It may be a software issue, than I asked, which software is it, you should try one by one... I was suspecting Apple's tech support is very primitive this proved it.
We upgrade MBA to Mountain Lion at Apple Service and upgraded with patch. Sound still works. Than I took and said, I will install software one by one and will see which software is problem (Its very funny... no command line to show it ??)
Any way , I restored my data, re-installed software (MS Office 2011, Paragon, Parallels, The Unarchiver, Evernote, VLC) everything is ok. Yesterday night again lost sound and again problem sound over headphones. Tried everthing for 6-7 hours got angry and went out. I choose apple for reliability and availability and recommed it for everyone around me. But I feel cheated now...
Just before I write this post, it was disconnected from power for 4-5 hours, I open lid, just before login I test sound it worked. I was smiling, I logged in, I was testing sound crazy, still working. Open safari, open discussions... sound was gone again.
OK this is software problem but how I can find it.. Thru console, any command line input, any help appreciated.
