MBA or MB pro?

I am trying to find some reasons to get either or for a new portable but running into some issues. I am wondering which I should get if interested in playing some games (ie WoW). I see the new MBA have some graphic upgrades but not sure if it can handle the back up role of a gaming comp/netbook. So my question is what can each of them offer and any tips on how to choose?

I have one of each (Late 2008) and _they both run exactly the same_ with the usual productivity applications - Office 2004, iLife, iWork, NeoOffice 2.5 Safari/Firefox. Parallels runs WinXP and openSUSE11 very quickly on both. The MBA boots to a usable desktop in about 20-30 seconds, wakes from sleep immediately and shuts down in about 10-15 seconds. My MBP 2.4/4GB/256VRAM notebooks all had display issues (entire system freezes and the display looks like frozen bad-UHF television) and I've gone through 3 replacements. Apple finally replaced the 3rd one with an upgraded 2.53/4GB/512VRAM and the issues disappeared. Splinter Cell and Zoo Tycoon 2 run just fine on the new MBP but I have not run them on the MBA. The MBA, of course, has no internal DVD drive so I'm searching for games that will play without the need to tote an external Superdrive around. By far I use the MBA most often and bust out the MBP for DVD backups, photo work and WindowsXP/Bootcamp apps I run for work.

  • Installation Problems with Apple MBA and OfficeJet Pro 8600 All-in-One

I've had no issues with 8600 and MBA on my home network for over a year.  Today, the computer couldn't find the printer repeatedly without rebooting the printer everytime I sent a print job.  Got frustrated and thought I'd uninstall the printer and redownload and reinstall, so I did that.  HP sent the Mavericks 12.34.37.dmg file and I installed with no issues.  But it didn't open the Utility file like it said it would, so I opened it and clicked 'set up new device' to which it never found the printer at all.  Searching the HP site, I also found and downloaded and installed the HP PrintersDriver 3.0.dmg and still have the same problems.  My other computers in the house are finding the same printer and printing fine.  My MBA has no printer installed now, and the Utility software can't find it.  What do I do?  I need to be printing right now, and have never had issues like this before.  My printer serical number is [edited Serial Number by Moderator].  Please give me some direction and hope.
    Thank you.

    Hi @MacBimmer ,
I see that you are experiencing issues adding the printer over the wireless network back onto Yosemite. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Power cycle the router and restart the Mac and printer.
Follow these steps to Verify and Repair the Disk Permissions.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, then click Utilities.
From the sub menu on the right, double-click Disk Utility .
From the list on the left, select your drive or active partition.
Click the First Aid tab, then click Verify then Repair Disk Permissions.
    Restart your computer.
    Reset The Printing System:
Note: This will delete all the printers listed and you will have to add them back in again.
Go to the Apple, System Preferences, Printers and Scanners, hold down the control button on the keyboard and click your mouse in the white area on the left side of the window, select Reset Printing System when it comes up and put in the Mac password. Then click the + sign, select the printer,  then click on the add button. (you might have to click on the dropdown to select the printer name from the list)
If you are having network issues, then add the printer through the IP Protocal.
After clicking the + button, select the IP across the top, type in the printer's IPv4 address, select jet direct below and then Apply.
    Test the printer.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • When I return my MBA 13-inch, should I buy the same or MB Pro?

Pardon me, as I'm still very new to the Apple Community. I have tried to look for an answer to my problem, but now I write here.
I bought the fully loaded MBA 13-inch hardly 2 weeks ago. Already in the first weekend I experienced really poor battery life. Like under 3 hours - with precautions taken, like shutting off bluetooth, turning down screen brightness and calibrating the battery (though they say it is not necessary now on the Apple site). Therefore, I contacted Apple Support last Friday. They say I can return my computer and get a replacement or the money back. So all is fine in that way.
My question is this: I really loved everything about the MBA (except the battery) - but now I have doubts on whether to get the exact same replacement or buy the Macbook Pro 13-inch. What are people's experience with the longevity of MBA vs MB Pro battery life?? And wich model should I get, if you recommend MB Pro 13-inch (GB, Ghz etc.)?
As this is my first Mac I just hope to be as happy with my purchase as other Mac-owners are :-).
NB: I use it for surfing (and my job as webmaster), light photo editing, watching videoes, listening to iTunes and so on. And then I plan to bring the computer with me everyday, as I have a longer train ride going to work. So again, the lightness is also why I opted for the MBA in the first place.

Return it. If you're not happy with it take it back and swap it for another. The fact is you may have bought a bad one so don't run the risk of being stuck with it.
As to your question regarding what to swap it for, only you can answer. I can say that I have a MBA bought about 4 weeks ago and I get about 5 or 6 hours out of it but not in one go. If you have a long train ride or you are doing stuff as you say (videos, music etc) these things will drain your battery quickly.
A MBP may have a more robust battery life but they are way bigger and heavier so you have to decide what you're happy to compromise on. If I were you, I'd try another MBA, see if it drains as fast and if it does then you may be the type of user that needs the bigger and longer life of a MBP.

  • MacBook Pro V.S. MacBook Air ?

im just not sure which one to pick, theyre both great but it seems the air has an edge. here are my concerns:
    - too fragile
    - not enough storage
    - possibly finding another computer that preforms the same for a lower cost
if anybody here owns both the new macbook pro13'' or the macbook air 13'', which do you prefer and why?

--Too Fragile--nope! As said, dropping any laptop is a bad idea, but the MBA really isn't any more fragile than the MBP. So scratch that off your list. Of course, there are laptops that are bombproof, but neither the MBA nor the Pro are such. They're darn good--very sturdy and can hold up well, but they're not the toughest on the market. Then again, just how rough do you imagine you'd be? So long as we're not talking throwing the laptop from one side of the room to the other, you should be fine, even without a padded cover. I don't have one for my little 11" though I do carry it in the inner (safer) part of my backpack.
--Not enough storage--that WAS a problem with the MBA. Now it's only a problem if you also have a limited budget. You can get up to 512gb HD if you want on the MBA. You will have to pay extra for it, but then you'll have to pay extra for that or more than that on a Pro. The Pro still does have an advantage in that you can get *more* than 512gb--just as you can get more RAM (again, for a price). Still, it's no longer true that the MBA is all that limited when it comes to storage or RAM. You can get a respectable amount that should be able to handle a goodly amount of heavy programs and videos. Remember, though, that you'll have to order such online. The stores don't carry MBA's with that large an HD.
--Other computer that does the same at a lower cost--I can't say whether other computers made by other companies (cheaper ones) run as well or better. What I can say is this: over the last decade most people have found that going for a laptop that seems equal to an Apple's laptop but cheaper is a "penny-wise, dollar-foolish" move. What this means is that you save money upfront. The computer is cheaper. But what you saved in buying the computer has to be paid out for other things later. Like, the laptop doesn't last so many years and you need to buy a new one. Or when you do sell it, you don't get much for it.
Apple laptops, especially the Pro and Air lines, aren't cheap. But they aren't unreasonable either. The extra amount you pay upfront you *usually* get back in many other ways. Like in the longevity of the laptop. At the very least, Apple still ranks first in customer service and resale value. You decide if that and the Apple OS is worth the extra $. Of course, you can have your cake and eat it, too, if you buy refurbished or used. If the MBA or Pro doesn't have to be brand new, then there are a lot on the market from just last year for a good price that may do all you wish them to do.

  • 10.10 on MBA 2011, all-white login screen

Since installing Yosemite on my 2011 MBA, I occasionally will get an all-white login screen, I can see my login-icon but nothing else: I cannot see the password-entry field.  This happens with the built-in screen as well as external screens.  Appears to be intermittent.  My desktop background is set to rotate once per day.  Perhaps that is what's causing it?

I'm having what seems to be the same issue on both an MBA and a Pro.  In both cases I have background switching enabled, but every 30 min or so.  I mostly see this with the "locked screen" when the screen locks after a period of inactivity, I don't think I've seen this on a fresh boot login screen yet.
In all cases I have been able to type my password in blindly and get back into the system...

  • IPhoto The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

Have Yosemite installed on both my MBA and Mac Pro. iPhoto 9.0 running well on the MBA but when I tried opening iPhoto on my Mac pro get the message "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported." This is after I upgraded iPhoto.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While holding down the command & option keys boot into iPhoto and have it repair the Library.  If that does not work then download "Library Manager" and have that program work.  I found that better than the Apple program.

  • Fully loaded Air or MBP??

My first post, so be gentle!!!
First off I have a 27" 2010 iMac.  Its great and I use Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS5 for my photography (hobby).  I now need to replace my (Windows) laptop and want either a fully loaded (max ram, max SSD and max processor) Air or a MBP (13" or 15").
The laptop, for the most part will be used for general email, facebook, skype, surfing etc etc.  For this I know the Air would be fine.  However, a couple of times a year we go on vacation for 5 - 6 weeks at a time, during which I need to be able to store and do some basic photo editing.
For example, Ive just come back from a 5 week trip and have about 2000 photos.
On the new laptop, in Aperture I would simply create a new project whilst away and export/import that into my iMac Aperture Library when I get home.  When Im away I primerily use Photoshop to stitch panarama's together, and then bring those into Aperture.
To add more complication, Im starting to get into taking short movie clips with the DSLR - these will also need to be stored and possibly tweaked whislt away (iMovie / Final Cut Pro??).
So question - this will not be my main machine, so would a fully loaded Air (1.8Ghz dual-core i7 with max ram) handle, without significant performance issues Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS5 whilst Im on vacation?. If not, looks like i'll need the quad core i5 or i7 on the MBP!
    Any real world experience?
    Thanks
    Jon

I would like to join in on this topic - with a twist though.

  • The Macbook Air is running on a 1.6Ghz processor speed, what are the side affects to this significantly low speed?

Why would one prefer the MBA over the Pro when, at the same price (Air at 11inch and Pro at 13inch), the Pro seems to excel?
What is more important? Flash storage or the hard drive storage? (yes I am hinting at the fact that Air has the flash and Pro has the hard drive) Say that I am using Macbook for daily usage, not much heavy lifting operations but would still like the opportunity to do something more than simple with my computer if necessary

This is an Apples/Oranges question.  The MBA is a easy to tote, on the go computer whereas the 13" MBP is more of a workhorse, but a relative heavyweight compared to the 2.5lb MBA.  And then there's the storage, 128GB verses 500 GB.  If you only will have one computer, I would say go with the MBP.  And with a bigger screen to boot.
That said, I am getting rid of my MBP and have switched to the 11" MBA.  I did get the 1.8Ghz upgrade along with the I7 upgrade. IMHO, with the SSD, my little MBA has some real "pop".
If you want my 11" MBA, you'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.
Disclaimer: I also have a home 21.5 iMac for the big home jobs.

  • Difference in macbook air

What is the difference between the 1799 macbook air and the 999. They both hold the same space so what is it that I'm missing. And is 2 gigabytes plenty of space? I've got my ibook of 5 years and it's run out of space and so I want to make sure I get one that's gonna deliver the goods. I'm thinking about getting the 1799 but just wondering the difference between that and the 999. I'm also wondering if you guys out there think this would be a good purchase or should I save longer and get an even better one. Mine is falling apart so I'm hoping to get one in about four months. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

Just for reference - I bought a Revision B MBA strictly for using Logic Pro for portable recording studio sessions (can take my studio to the vocalist). However - as mentioned - the MBA is not ideal for most people. Unless you are looking to spend ALOT of money on your audio recording/production - then don't even worry about missing firewire.
The MBA handles Logic Pro with no issues. I had written a review of Logic and the MBA and posted it here - but unfortunately it was removed because it was a review - and I wasn't asking for help.
However - unless the MBA is specifically what you are looking for - as mentioned - you might look into a Macbook Pro. One major difference is the screen resolution. on the MBA it's ok - but much better on the Pro's. Higher resolution so you can fit more on the screen. The MBA is really cramped with Logic.
The 2gb of RAM in the MBA works fine. My average is 6 real music/vocal tracks, 4 software tracks - and live effects on most. NEver had a problem. I get 3 hours of battery using logic as it pegs one of the cores at full the entire time.
IF you are just wanting to input a decent mic or piano etc - the MBA is fine. Buy a Griffin iMic if needed - the USB port does more than enough for the casual musician.
And - the MBA is really great for portability.
One thing - the MBA only has 1 tiny, mono speaker. If you are planning to record music and listen to it with the built in speakers - then go for a macbook or a Pro.
So - MBA works for me - but I know exactly what i was getting - and exactly what I needed.
Of course - keep asking questions here if you are not sure. Good luck!

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • Which MacBook Pro is best for an online MBA program and face to face classes?

I'm going back to school for an MBA and going to pick up some certifications first.  I'll be attending online classes and some face to face classes.  How much MacBook Pro do I need?  I'm in the HR community, and my MBA is in Global Managment if that helps any.

  • MBA or pro?

    Hello all,
I'm in the market for a new laptop (currently on a 17" hp) and my decision to go Mac is a definite! My question however is should I go with the new MacBook air 13", 256gb, 4Gb ram, and upgraded to the 2.13Ghz or go with the 13" MacBook pro? I am a musician so I will be using it for loops and some recording. I also dabble in photography so I will be doing some photo editing. Along with those two uses I also do A LOT of public speaking (the airs mobility will be handy in this situation.) I have about $1800 to spend. I really like the flash storage and mobility of the air, but I'm just wondering if the pro would be better suited for my needs. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Bullitt2488,
Are you ok with the significant downgrade in screen real estate? At $1799, the cost of the MBA you're considering, you can also get a 15" MBP i5 unit or a loader 13" MBP with plenty of money left over for a new monitor, AppleCare or other peripherals. One thing to note, the MBA does not have an IR port so if you intend to do presentations on it you'll need to use an application on your iPhone/iPod Touch (if you have one) or a USB/Bluetooth based peripheral.
Personally, if you're prepared to shell out the $1800 for the MBA then I'd recommend the 15" MBP. I tote one of those around (as well as a 13" MBP and 11" MBA) in my bag and even with all three my daily carrier bag is very manageable.
Another thing to consider, how critical is FireWire? If it's at all important than the Air is automatically out. If it's of no importance, then the Air is back in. How important is access to CD/DVD media on a regular basis? While the Air can support external drives, that means more $$ and another peripheral to lug around everyday.

  • Will Logic Pro X run on the latest MBA with i5 and 8GB RAM?

    Hi,
want to buy the new Logic Pro X but I´m not sure if it will rum smoothly on my MBA 2013 with i5 and 8GB Ram.
I saw some very promising posts on the i-net regarding Logic Pro 9 which seems to run nice. But does the latest version of Logic require more hardware power?
Can anybody share any experience on this?
    thanks!

Logic Pro X has got some system requirements, and your MacBook meets all of these requirements > https://www.apple.com/logic-pro/specs/
Have a look at the Logic forum and read experiences. Also, there are reviews over the Internet, but if Logic Pro 9 works properly in that MacBook, Logic Pro X will also run properly

  • MBA 13", Parallels 6, and Windows 7 Pro installation

Has anyone else experienced a longer than usual "completing installation" screen when they installed Windows 7 Pro? More specifically, installing Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) onto a flash drive (thumb drive)? I've already "force quit" Parallels once and re-started my virtual machine. It returns to the "completing installation" screen.

I am not sure if the transfer speed of USB 2.0 was causing a delay in the installation. I opted to install the copy of Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) onto my MacBook Air hard drive.
