MBA Powerful Enough For External HDTV?

Currently i plug my MBP into an external 40" HDTV, connect the power close the lid and watch HD films from iTunes, Plex etc.
Would a high spec MBA also be able to achieve this task, or is the graphics card not powerful enough?
Thanks for input...

Yes, it's quite capable for your purposes.

Purchasing with the upgrades through Apple would add about $800 over the Black Friday deal at Best Buy.  Just looking for some advice if I will be satisfied with the based model.

All models will do what you want. Upgraded models will do it faster than the standard models.
Just why are you thinking of switching to a Mac?

Is Prentium D Dual Core 3.0 powerful enough for CS3?

Yes, Mobotu, I found P Pro 2.0 and Aspect 5.0 much better than 1.5.1 and 4.25 if for no other reason than it fixed the color/saturation shift when I played videos from the timeline without having to monkey around with that overlay playback setting. And it fixed the slight stuttering that the audio used to make when I first started playing a clip in the timeline. Beyond that, it has some other little nifty improvements, multicam, and a flexible window interface. I just received my free CS3 upgrade yesterday (due to a special promo when I bought ver. 2.0 a few months ago), so I will see how that works with Aspect HD 5 now. I also finally get a free upgrade included for my aging version of Encore 1.5 to Encore CS 3.0 and I will also see if I can find any use for On Location as well.

  • Apple MacBook Air 2011 - powerful enough for most tasks?

I want to buy the 2011 model of MacBook Air 13” 128GB, but I have some questions for you guys, would appreciate it if you experts have answers:
    1) I'm currently on a two year old Acer Aspire 6920G laptop with 17”, Windows 7, Core Duo 2 (T5750 @ 2.0 Ghz) and 3 GB RAM - will my new MacBook Air feel one million times faster to use?
    2) Can I later (easily/cheaply) upgrade the MBA's RAM to 8GB?
    3) I mostly use web browsers, office software, IM programs, media players etc., but I will also use it a lot for electronic music making (with Ableton Live and virtual instruments/effects) and DJ’ing (with Avid Torq). I almost never do any heavy duty image work, and I rarely code/edit video - will the MBA be fast enough for the things I do most often, or do I have to get a MacBook Pro?
    4) How often does the fan start up? And when it's on, how much noise does it really make when it approaches 6500 RPM?
    5) I read that with Lion the fan is running more than with previous OS'es - can this really be fixed with booting in 32-bit rather than 64-bit? And what will that entail for the CPU power/battery longevity/software compability?
    6) Is the graphics adapter in my current PC (nVidia GeForce 9500M GS) much more powerful than the MBA's Intel HD3000, or is it almost the same now?
    7) Is it easy to run Windows XP or 7 in Boot Camp? I have a few Windows programs I'd like to continue using.
    8) Should I alternatively use a few more bucks and get a MacBook Pro with SSD-disk? Is that less "locked" and more compatible with what might happen in the future, technology-wise?
    9) Is it possible/cheap to switch the English keyboard to a Norwegian one next time I'm visiting Norway?
I have to make a purchase of a new laptop soon, so I'd GREATLY appreciate any answers. Since I have had software- and hardware problems with every PC I've ever owned, I frankly do not trust them anymore. So here we go then - Mac!

Let's see if I can help
1)The i5 Macbook air should be considerably faster than your previous laptop. Mostly because of the SSD and the i5 processor.
2)I'm not sure about the latest macbook airs, but previous models have their RAM modules soldered to the Logic Board, I don't think you can upgrade the RAM at all.
3)The MacBook Air might be fast enough, but Just, I would go with a Macbook Pro, mostly because it's easier to upgrade.
4)It will kick in several times but rarely at full speed, and it's not that loud. Would recommend a macbook pro for cooler running.
    5) I didn't notice any difference between Lion and Snow Leopard regarding fan activity. Lion is a 64-bit only system, there is no way to boot in a full 32-bit environment. Compatibility can be an issue with some software, ie. traktor users have been reporting problems with external hardware running Lion, but updates will fix these soon.
6)They are at comparable levels, the Intel HD 3000 might even be better at some point. It's much better than the 9400m that older macbook airs had.
7)Yes, as long as you have the optional super drive to install it.
8)Yes, that would be a better idea.
9)I don't think so, never heard of people swapping keyboards on Macbook Airs or Pro's.
I'd buy a MacBook Pro if you are planning to keep it for long. It's more powerful, more upgradeable and runs cooler and quieter than the air.
Hope you get your mac soon!

  • Powerful enough for Aperture / PSE / Pixelmator?

Just asked a similar question over in the Aperture community but from the hardware perspective do users of high spec Air's (13 inch I'm thinking) find it powerful enough to use Aperture and various plug-ins (Nik or Topaz say) and editoros like PSE or Pixelmator or would I be better getting a pro?
I use a quad core i7 iMac at home so am used to being able to run pretty much anything I want - I don't overload it by any means but want to keep my current workflow when I'm out and about hence the queston. The lighter air would be preferable for other reasons but if it can't cope then the pro it is.
    Many thanks all,
    James

I've used both a 2009 MBP and a 2011 MBA to use those programs. Yes, my iMac is noticably faster with some functions but not so much that I think to myself, "Nah, I'll wait to edit that photo when I get home."
Actually the 13" display is more annoying (after using a 21" and 27" iMac) than the speed. The MBA is not a netbook. It is an incredibly powerful computer in a small package.

  • So You Think Your Computer's Not Powerful Enough For FCE/FCP !!!!!

It's NOT a question - just some sobering thoughts!
How many times do we get worried owners asking whether the Mac they have or the one they intend to get will have enough power to operate FCE/FCP?
So I trawled through the history books - otherwise known as back-copies of Macworld and this is what I discovered.
Final Cut Pro was released in April 1999. At that time the most powerful Macs had the following specification:-
    G3 450MHz processors.
    OS 8.6
Couldn't find the HD size but guess it was around 20GB.
All this power cost over £2,000 !
Now I know that the latest versions of FCE/FCP have additional features, but if we disregard HD processing the latest are not that much different from the original.
So has anyone, even those that buy the puniest Mac-Mini, got anything to really worry about?
    Ian.(Who sets cats amongst pigeons).

I have a 1Ghz, G4 Powerbook w/768MB RAM and FCEHD runs beautifully. I also successfully use DVDSP2, Compressor, Cinema 4d 9.52, AE6.5Pro and RealFlow3. Motion 1 causes some crashes when I try to use particle effects and some AE based plug ins, but it does work for basic stuff.
    OK, bragging over

  • New Macbook powerful enough for Logic?

    Hello All,
I'm in the market for a new laptop and I am confused on macbook or pro. I obviously would like to stay with the macbook as it is much cheaper but can it really handle Logic well? From what I read first thing is switch out the hd and put in a 7200 instead. Plus I would max out the ram. SO would this compensate. I normally push at least 32 tracks and I do use quite a bit of pluggins even bussing mixes. I will be moving in the world of virtual instruments as well as i sold a bunch of my analog gear. So what do you guys think?? Or should I just get the pro--the intro one- the fw800 is nice because I think this would help with track counts on an external, plus the express card might come in handy.
    Any feedback would be great.

Up until 2 or 3 months ago I had a Macbook Pro.
I purchased it because it had the Expresscard slot that I was going to use if I ever got an EVDO card for wireless communication. For some reason, everywhere I go, there seems to be wi-fi. So that never happened.
I also got it so I could use the FW800 with the rackmount gear I was going to buy, but then realized I don't need rackmount FW800 gear in my HOME studio...
So after about a year and a half and two 3 month long tours lugging around a heavier 15in machine, I sold it and bought a Blackbook.
It runs like a dream, in fact, it is 2 to 3x faster than my pro... (Core Duo vs Core 2)
But if you look at the benchmarks, the speed difference is negligible for music apps IMO. Some folks want the extra guff, but I think that a portable machine is allowed to be less than a beast. If you really need the power, iMacs and Mac Pros are your game.

  • Is the MBA 256gb right for me?

    Hello all,
Let me start by saying Im going to be buying a Macbook soon and Im leaning toward the MBA because of the portability and speed it offers. This will be my first Mac. I am a High School Teacher and Im also going to school myself so I need portability, but money is also tight. Primary uses will be for Word Documents, Spreadsheets, Internet surfing, Emails with PDF downloads and a "homebase" for my iTunes account. I cant think of any use where I would need a CD drive.
I guess my question is, will the MBA be enough for me or should I opt for the Macbook Pro? Any suggestions?
Also, Macrumors says the MBA is due for an update soon? Should I hold off my purchase? My HP is on its way out!
Thank you for any help you have to offer!

MBA should do you just fine--do make sure you get 4gb RAM. The Pro is really for people who either need that disk drive, or might need something larger/expandable in the future. That doesn't seem likely with you (i.e. they're doing heavy duty programs, animation, videos, etc.--or might be doing that in the future.). And though some may say otherwise, having switched from a Pro myself, I can say that I very much notice the weight difference--and how much easier and faster it is to slip my computer in and out of the bag. Also that I can carry around a thinner bag You can't imagine the bulky backpacks I had before I got the air. Packing and unpacking are very speedy as I can manage my MBA with one hand, which means I get where I'm going and get to work that much faster. You might think that a pound or so less in weight and half-the-thickness wouldn't matter, but it really can be a huge difference.
As for whether you need anything bigger or more powerful: the thing you have to remember is that the common wisdom for computers of yesteryear really doesn't apply any more. That wisdom was to get the biggest and fastest, because everything in your life was going to be on it--mail, documents, programs, pictures, music, movies, games....
But the fact is, between what we put on our phones, renting rather than buying movies, external hard drives (always a good idea to have so you can back everything up in case!), clouds, the internet, iPods, iPads, etc, most of us really don't need ourlaptops to be able to hold everything. And, in addition, many of those things have significantly shrunk in recent years, while hard drives and SSD on laptops have gotten larger. So music takes up far less space than it once did on hard drives, yet you've got more hard drive than you did back when the music was taking up so much space.
Which all means you really can have a laptop as thin and light as the MBA that does all you'd want a laptop to do. Just check how much HD you'll need for all you want to put on it. If the amount is less than 256g--i.e. you'll be able to put it all on and have some wiggle room--you're golden.

  • Is the new macbook's performance good enough for me?

    Hi,
I didn't see any topic for the new MacBook, so I just put this question here, hope you people don't really mind, sorry for that.
My plan for next couple years on was to build a PC by myself, and buy a new laptop that have a nice design but can deliver enough performance for my need.  Here is what I was thinking about.
Sometimes I need to do something hard and intensive, also need playing video games for fun, which these are not quiet often.  Which is exactly why I want to build a desktop PC for.  Other times I need to use GIMP and I want to learn programming, knowing to use commands, or creating something new just for fun, also playing games that is not very intensive on performance (Minecraft, Left 4 Dead 2, GMOD(which could be intensive sometimes)).  But most of the times, I am just taking to my friends on internet, watching videos, or making a document maybe checking e-mails.
Consider about that, my laptop will be the primary platform, and only uses Desktop PC for heavy works.  It might also save some money for electricity :-)
My current Dell Inspiron 3000 was good, but sometimes I thought the N3530 was under-power, that does not benefits me on performance.  I have a mid-2012 MacBook Air from school which is faster, and is more than enough to do schoolwork and web broswing. The new MacBook I checked was pretty impressive and I like that design, but a lot of people have argued that performance, afraid that performance could only do light tasks.
These days I see the report that New MacBook was on par with mid-2011 MacBook Air on performance, so I guess it could benefits me.  If the performance is good enough, I will go with this one, regardless about price-performance thing.

Think of the new Macbook as a powerful iPad that can run OS X.....is that powerful enough for you? Sexy as they are, and I want one too, they're just an entry level computer.

  • Is intel iris pro powerful enough

Is intel iris pro powerful enough for graphic intensive programmes such as auto cad , sketch up and final cut?

    Yes

  • Processor powerful enough to run Premiere Pro

I would like to purchase an HP Pavillion p6-2014 to run PP. I am unsure, however, if the processor is powerful enough: it uses the AMD A6-Series. Does anyone know if this will work? The tech specs are here http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+/+AMD+A-Series+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+ 1TB+Hard+Drive/3641602.p?id=1218422886714&skuId=3641602&st=p6-2014&cp=1&lp=1

Unfortunately, that system still falls below Adobe's minimum requirements for Premiere Pro CS5.x. The A6-3600 CPU is, if anything, slower than some of the Phenom II quad-core CPUs - and all of the Phenom IIs (and Fusions) lack full support for SSE 4.x instructions that CS5.x makes great use of. Even worse, that system has only one single hard drive for absolutely everything (which will make Premiere Pro not run properly, at least to anybody's satisfaction). You will need three or more fast internal hard drives for Premiere Pro to function satisfactorily. And that system does not have a discrete GPU at all, let alone an Nvidia GPU, so CS5.x will only run in MPE software-only mode. And its included 8GB of RAM is barely enough to run CS5.x adequately.
In other words, that system is cheap - and performs exactly that way. You get what you pay for, in this particular case. A $400 system - desktop or laptop - is just not powerful enough for video editing unless all you're working with is standard-definition DV from tape (and that requires the purchase of a Firewire 400 card in addition to the system, in this particular case).

  • Is the 2.53Ghz New 13inch macbook pro powerful enough ?

Is the 2.53Ghz New 13inch macbook pro powerful enough for basic photo/video editing ?
    Sincerely

No problem paulcurtis. Typical story, if I'd waited a couple of weeks or a month, I could have gotten for 300 less a refurbed 2.53 with the discreet video card with 512 MB of vid ram. As it is, I have a discreet card with 256.
All the MBP from late 2008 onward have a Nivdia 9400 Video chip on-board, meaning integrated with the motherboard. These cards share 256MB of ram with system ram. The extra discreet card is a Nivdia 9600 card. My model came with 256MB of its own dedicated ram. So when I'm on battery, I use the 9400 because it uses less electricity. When plugged in I use the 9600 with 256 as it provides significantly better performance. I believe that when Snowbird comes out, that apps written for it, especially creative apps, such as Photoshop, Final Cut Express, Aperture or Lightroom, or going to put more of the processing onto the video card. In that case the more ram on the video card the better.
If I was buying today, I would get a refurbed 2.53 or 2.66 with the 512 MB version of the card. Now you can get those same models for the price I paid for my 2.4. they also come with more Ram 4GB and more onboard cache 6MB as opposed to 3. The cache is the fastest memory on the system and like ram, the more the merrier. Don't get me wrong, I love this Macbook and don't regret the purchase at all. In fact it's become my main computer now. but that's the way of computer world.
The refurbed macs are a real deal, in my view. And if you are going to do any kind of Photoshop or use so-called "Pro" apps beyond iLife, the dedicated graphics card will be a plus. Likewise for playing games.
    Hope that helps.

  • MBA (Gen 1) USB External Drive for Boot and Backup? Recomendations?

I just ordered a 1st generation MBA with the SSD. I want to order an external USB drive that I can use to back up and boot the MBA. I have read that the USB port on the MBA does not provide enough power to support some external drives(?).
I like the G-Technology drives, looking at the G-Drive Mini. Will the USB port on the MBA provide enough power to run that drive?
    Any recommendations?

I've used both of those drives on a MacBook Air for storage and a Time Machine backup without fail. The LaCie rugged is a personal favorite with the triple interface (as I use on a MacBook Pro with FW 800).
My experience with the G-Drive Mini that I had was a bit "unique." Whenever I'd plug the drive in, the backlight would not come on unless the unit was connected to power. I later found out it was my drive, drawing excessive bus power and G-Technology replaced it under warranty. But I did notice, when hooking the drive up to various port testers that it was drawing significantly more power across the USB port than my LaCie.
Ironically, a co-worker has been using his G-Drive Mini with his MacBook Air since March with nothing but praise.
