MBA - Roland TD-4 Drum kit

Hi all,
Wondering if it is possible to record drums (on garageband/logic pro) with a Roland TD-4 electric drum kit straight into my 11" MacBook Air?
I understand the MBA has no audio input, but perhaps there would be a suitable USB interface?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I have interest in the Macbook AIr and wondered about this. While there are  USB audio devices that should work w/o problem, I wonder what's out there in the way of Thunderbolt compatible audio devices. My sole external audio experience has been firewire.

  • Roland TD4SX, Addictive Drums 1.5 and Logic Pro 9 issues

I have been using AD and Logic with my Roland Drum kit for a little while now and while the automatic mapping from kit to plugin is working for the most part, Logic seems to kill the midi coming from one of the pads (the middle tom 45(A2)) and I'm not sure why. It requires me to remap this pad to another midi key to get it to work. I could only assume that Logic has taken this midi key for its own use but I have no idea how to find out what it is mapped to and how to remove that mapping. Anyone know how to debug this issue?
I believe this is an issue with Logic specifically. The reason I know this is because that pad and the kit in its default mapping work perfectly in Ableton Live but not in Logic.

You might find that you have inadvertently 'learned' A2 as a controller assignment. Open the *Controller Assignments* window ⌘-K, and delete the learned message that is 90 39 Lo7 (A2).

  • In Garageband, why won't the Roland HD3 V-Drums hi-hat trigger any midi at all? (It works when it's used as audio)

My drummer bought the Roland HD3 V-Drums recently, and I bought a Mac Mini (to record on Garageband).
When we record as audio from the V-Drums (using an audio interface) everything seems to work fine - but (of course) we can't change the sounds etc as it isn't midi (and we want to use midi).
When we record as midi from the V-Drums (using a midi to USB cable) there are two major problems. Firstly, the hi-hat doesn't pick up at all - despite the fact it works when it's used as audio. When the hi-hat is hit, it doesn’t trigger any midi at all. The second is that the drums occasionally trigger a double hit. This issue I can get over (though it is annoying and it shouldn't happen) as I can manually delete any extra hits.
I wouldn't expect two expensive pieces of kit (Apple Mac and Roland V Drums) not to work perfectly on something so simple. Please can you advise me of how to resolve this?
(For info, I've emailed Roland the same issue too.)
    Thanks.

While connected to GarageBand hold down Variation and 7 on the HD-3 to reassign MIDI codes.  Garageband does not recognize the HH "edge" codes so I changed both of these (HH OPEN EDGE and HH CLOSE EDGE) to match the value for the "bow".  With the HH pedal down, hit the center of the HH pad, the screen should say HH CLOSE BOW.  Remember the code, then hit the edge of the HH pad.  The screen should say HH CLOSE EDGE.  Use the Up arrow button to set the value for the HH CLOSE BOW.  Repeat the same steps with the HH pedal up so HH OPEN EDGE uses the same code as HH OPEN BOW.  To reset any pad to factory value hold down up and down button at same time.   Hope this helps!

  • Why are Loops and Drum Kit greyed out on GarageBand 10?

I've looked and researched every forum and help section on fixing this issue but to no avail, I see some people having success but they seem to have different situations. Unless I'm missing a step or something.
Here is my situation: I have OSX Mavericks installed on my iMac, I re-installed GarageBand from the App Store. I also bought the $5 loop in-app purchase. When I opened GarageBand and signed in, it asked if I wanted to download the loops and drum kits, so I clicked to download rather than cancel, it seemed to be downloading ok and after 2 hours the progress bar was filled up with blue but nothing happened, seemed like the app crashed, so I Force Quit GB. When I re-opened the app, I noticed the loops and drums were still greyed out, then a pop-up came up saying that it was unable to complete download and to check internet connection. When I go to Software Update, there are no updates showing for GB and the purchases tab shows GB installed.
I'd like to get these activated since I made the purchase. If I need to speak to someone directly from Apple, does anyone have a number I can call?
    Thanks for any help offered.

There is a "Contact Us" link directly on this page, in the lower right corner. On the page that will open look for the link "Start your Request Online".
    Check the following things:
Do you have enough free disk space? The in-app purchase has 20.1 GB.
Do you have any firewall or antivirus filters active? Disable them, when you try again.
Try the download from an administrator account.
It may also be a problem with your AppleID and Region settings.
Did you buy (or accept) GarageBand 10 on your Mac with the same AppleID you are using to restore the Purchase? Did you buy GarageBand in the same country where you are now?
Check your account settings at the AppleStore page  http://store.apple.com/us/account/home
Click the "ViewAccount " link and reenter (not only check) all billing address setting.
And then enable "Express checkout", if it is not enabled.

  • Installing Drum Kits

Hello, everyone. I have just purchased Jam Pack Rhythm Section. It installed without incident and the new drum kits show up in Garageband, but not in Logic Express 8. The new loops are in Logic, but not the kits. Is there something I need to do to get them to appear in Ultrabeat?

    Hi,
the kits should be non-Ultrabeat but EXS Kits; They should (or could) show up under EXS-Garageband or in the Channelstrip settings or in the Intrument Plugin. Usually in a Submenu - Look for "Garageband Intruments" or something like that.

  • How can I record and edit using an electronic drum kit to midi on a windows based PC (That I will eventually use in Garageband)?

    Hi there
I know this isnt really a Garagband question and possibly a little off GB topic, but in the end I will be using the midi file in Garageband so it kind of is
I'm new to Midi recording so please bare with me.
I am looking to do the following.
Have my drummer record from his Session Pro DD505 electronic drum kit (which has a midi out) into his windows based computer via midi (He owns a usb to midi cable), so that he can then email me the midi file, so I can add it to a song in Garageband on my Mac. I will then choose the sound of the drum kit myself from Garageband.
He needs to be able to correct any errors he has made in the midi file before emailing it me, either by re-recording sections or by moving the incorrect drum notes to the correct beat.
I guess he would need to be able to hear the song that he is playing along to, and possibly have a click track playing at the same time.
So I guess what I am looking for is some FREE windows software to be able to record midi drum files into, that can also be used to edit the midi file after. A separate free piece of software could also be used to edit the drum midi files instead though.
I know that I can correct the midi drum files myself in Garageband, but I would rather my drummer spent the time doing this, not myself.
I've spent a bit of time googling this today but keep bringing up the wrong things as I'm probably using the wrong search terms.
    So, any ideas?
    thanks

You will be able to use the Cubase AI4 with any audio interface. Another option is to look for a 30 day demo of software like Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/index.php It won't stop after 30 days... just your concience needs to respond
Problem is though that if all you want to record is the MIDI then your drummer will also need some drum sounds in the form of a software instrument or a 3rd party VST to load into the recording software. So another program that comes uncrippled but has drum sounds in it is Ableton Live http://www.ableton.com/products However this can be an intimidating piece of software and it also cripples itself after 30 days.

  • I have a set of drum samples that I want to use as one of the drum kits in Garageband. How?

    Hi there
I don't know what this is called so I havent been able to search for it online.
I have a set of WAV drum samples (kick, snare, hihat etc all as individual sounds) that I would like to use over an entire song as the drum kit for the song.
Meaning when I play the notes on my midi keyboard I can hear the sounds using garageband.
Or if I have played the drums already and created a midi track in GB I can select this entire set of sounds as the drum kit.
Is this possible and if so how do I acheive this please?

  • Ultrabeat in Logic Pro X is missing drum kits

    Hi,
So recently, I got Logic Pro X because I've been meaning to try producing house music with it. I was introduced to Ultrabeat in some tutorials saying to click the dropdown menu (at the top) and select 01 drum kits and choose Trance Kit 02. However, when I click the dropdown menu, I seem to only have 8 samples in the drum kit and none of them sound good at all. Why do I have only 8? I've seen other discussions where people have up to 25+, is this something that I can download from the additonal content? And if so, what is it called?
    Many Thanks!
    MChen.

    Try Drum Machine
....and also the Logic Studio 2 Compatibility Sounds and Instruments found under the Legacy entry.... along with the GB 11 Sounds and instruments.. and finally the Instruments found under Jam pack 1, Jam Pack Remix and Jam Pack Rhythm,
Also make sure the Essential Sounds and Instruments set has downloaded completely too...
Personally, if you have the space, I'd download all the content...  as there is so much on offer for free... that you may find useful in the future.

  • Why do all of the drum kits in Logic Pro X have a delay? All of my drum hits (drum kits only, not drum machine) are behind the beat.

When I turn on the metronome, it's in sync with EVERYTHING except the drum kits.
Is anyone else having this problem?
When I change the plugin on the these tracks to a LPX drum machine or to a 3rd party drum plugin  the problem goes away.

    Is Plug-in Latency Compensation enabled?

  • Recording to midi into Garageband with an electro drum kit?

    Hey all
I thought I'd have a play around with a few things this evening on Garageband after work, but wanted to confirm a few things before I start anything.
Ive got an electro drum kit with midi capabailities and also have a Midi to USB lead.
I am assuming I can take a midi in/out from the electro kits brain through the Midi to USB lead into my Mac.
Connect my headphones to my Mac and play with my kit using the in built Garageband drum sounds?
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Moving on further from this I also have a Akai EIE Pro interface with 4 channel inputs, so I was going to attempt to record a full live 3 piece band.
(2 vox, 1 guitar, 1 bass) with the Akai, and then also record the midi drums at the same time.
I am assuming that this is also possible?
    Thanks

I am assuming I can take a midi in/out from the electro kits brain through the Midi to USB lead into my Mac.
Connect my headphones to my Mac and play with my kit using the in built Garageband drum sounds?
Yes. Caveat: the Midi to USB "lead" that you mention is actually an interface that might need a driver to work with your computer.
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
    Yes.
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Exactly. Does your drumkit allow to assign a midi note to every pad? Then you could adjust it to trigger the correct GB sounds. An alternative is a midi mapping software like MidiPipe that transforms the incoming midi signal (I haven't tried it personally).
Yes. Again: make sure you have the right driver for the interface that corresponds to your OS version.
    Happy playing around!

  • New User - Cannot select drum kit loops

    Hi,
I am a trying out GarageBand for the first time and having a lot of fun.
However I was following one of the Apple tutorials where I clicked on song writing and had a basic drum track. The tutorial said if you don't like the drum track you can delete it and then use the Loop browser to select different drum kits.
However when I click on the Loop browser I can't click on the drum kit icons to then select a drum loop - they are all ghosted out - like as if they are not installed on my system.
Yet the basic drum loop played fine - so it must be there somewhere.
Do I have to install these loops somehow like I had to install the instruments? (The system told me I needed to install some things online - but I've not seen anything regarding loops)
    Help !!!
    Thanks

In case anyone had the same problems as me - I had to use the Applications disc that came with my laptop to re-install Garageband from the DVD.
Just take care using it - make sure you backup your system just in case (always a good idea) - insert the disc and follow the instructions. Make sure you take all the tick boxes out of the other applications so that you only install Garageband.
Then let it install and when the computer restarts there are all the loops in their glory.
Its a shame that Garageband lets you download the loops online because that is a complete waste of time as even after downloading 1.2 gigs worth of data Garageband ignores the loops even though they are there on your system. The only way to get the loops to work is by installing off the dvd that came with your computer.
    Hope this helps other users.
    Cheers
    Phil

  • Drum kit isn't working

I just bought my first macbook pro and I have never owned a mac before and I am very interested in making my own music and I have a program called Garageband and I have played with it for a few hours and can only get the piano functions to work but can't figure out how to get the drumkit to work. I can get it pulled up but when I put it on the mode where you use your keyboard to make the sounds, it doesn't make any sounds but I can see that the keys I'm pressing are being pushed on the electronic keyboard, any ideas?

    a few thoughts...
make sure you created a software instrument track (the plus sign, lower left) and selected a drumset as the instrument (drum kits on the right).
as a test, select the Rock Kit, because that doesn't require any additional downloads.
make sure the track is selected (click it - it should be green), and play.
still not working? try playing in a different register on your keyboard.
no joy? try resetting your keyboard to its factory defaults. sometimes there are MIDI problems and that can resolve them. otherwise, make sure the keyboard is transmitting on MIDI channel 1.
    any luck?

  • How do you save customized drum kits as a usable choice in the drum kit setting selection menu

i've loaded samples from my own personal sound banks into the Drag & Drop Samples Kit and i would like to be able to save them as a customized drum kit so that i can select that particular kit when i compose songs in Logic.

    DavidBacon wrote:
Anyway, the overall, larger issue for me is the inability I have to choose and get non-Garageband instruments (largely orchestral) to play the Midi events given on various tracks. If my guess is correct then technically, orchestral instruments not offered in the standard Logic Pro 8 Garageband Mixer channel menu are referred to as external Midi sampled instruments - still, IMHO the process is not clearly spelled out in the User Manual.  The simple step by step process whereby a non-Garage band instrument, say an orchestral instrument, is placed in a channel replete with Midi event (notes) waiting to be played should be easy, logical and given in a simple to follow format, but is not.
What with all the talk of routes, busses, auxillary channels, GM devices, GM mixers, audio bins, libraries and audio files this Logic Pro User is confused to the max.
David,  you understand that this is professional software and is not necessarily meant to be easy but is in fact designed to give the professional user as many choices as possible, that's why it's in the Pro Apps section. You WILL need to learn about buses, GM Devices, Audio Bins, Libraries...etc..etc if you intend to use Logic.
That said, you are looking in the wrong place in the channel strip.
      May I offer you advice?
    Go here:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/
Open "Exploring Logic Pro"  (a short PDF Document). Pay special attention to chapter 3. Also pay special attention to the included graphics of the channel strips.
I encourage you to read the whole document as it will clear up many things... even though it's a Logic 9 document.

  • [LPX] Drummer/Drum Kit Designer memory leak causing crash

After working with LPX for a couple of days after release with almost no problems save for a few system overload errors that always seemed to sort themselves out, I loaded up a project I had been working on to find that it crashed every time I tried to play the track. Other, smaller projects, still played in varying degrees, some having to wait for a long time seemingly for samplers to load up etc.
I did some testing (painstaking, considering that I was having to force-quit the application for my computer to even run again; as an aside there were never any error reports for whatever reason) and found that it appears to be Drummer/Drum Kit Designer that's causing massive memory usage. Looking at the activity monitor when loading the project revealed that the memory usage would just go up and up until it maxed out my (rather modest) 4GB RAM, at which point there would be no free memory and the computer would slow almost to a standstill. Removing all instances of Drum Kit Designer and Drummer reduces the load to a point where it is once again manageable.
This seems like a fault in Drummer, I'm thinking possibly a memory leak. Has anyone else been experiencing this problem/anyone have any thoughts as to how it could be fixed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jasper

This is not a memory bug. It's simply the nature of the new Drummer.
Drummer uses a LOT of samples. It's a 13GB download for a reason. You will need more than 4GB to use drummer and not run into issues.
The nature of the modern Logic engine - which seems unchanged from v9 - makes it very bad at being able to tell when it's running out of memory. Logic will simply freeze or crash most of the time it runs out. The freeze would be down to it using literally every last MB on your RAM without overstepping the boundary, and the crash would be downt to it claiming to need more real RAM than you have spare.
Producer kits use 5.1 surround samples, and submixes them to stereo in a way that posistions them around the space. Whilst a doddle for a modern machine, you Mac is rather long in the tooth to be trying to do that whilst struggling to handle 1.2GB patches with 4GB of RAM total.
