Mba shuts down when on battery

My Mac Book Air 13", Mid-2011, had Lion 10.7.5 installed
Then a few days ago I start seeing message that looked at first as virus, teling me I should shut down the machine.
I shutdown and restart. This kept repeating.
So I did a clean install of Lion Mountain 10.8.2. and then restored from my TimeMachine (no applications).
Then the problem started repeating. This time with no message. Just randomly shuts down.
So I reinstaled 10.8.2, and this time scanned for viruses before I restored anything back from the TM (I use Sophos AntiVirus)
It works now.
But when I disconnect the power cable, even though I see 98% full battery,
the machine shuts down immediately.
Any advise ?
J

I had/have this exact same problem after I installed the battery update 1.3 on Macbook Pro a few days ago.
I tried a SMC reset & a PRAM reset, all to no avail.
I called Apple today & talked with 2 different agents explaining my problem. One askked me to do another PRAM reset, which I did, again, to no success.
So, they are sending me a new battery, which I am really hoping will solve my problem (Macbook Pro shutting down instantly on an almost full battery at around 84% while not attached to the power cord).
Thing is, I never had a problem with the battery before I installed this update, so this battery update 1.3 somehow corrupted my battery/settings, and unfortunetly once you run this update, your stuck.
There is no way to undo this update as it changes the firmware permanetly.
Ugh.
Next time, I am not going to be so quick when installing "updates", I apparently really don't need. This battery update 1.3 has just caused me headaches & problems on my new Macbook pro.
Heed my advice. Research firmware updates carefully before subjecting your computer to these unneeded "fixes".
My advice is to call Apple & let them know of this problem. Get a new battery. They were apparently unware of this problem update when I called today, and more people need to be vocal about this & complain about this apparently corrupt battery update.
Good Luck.

  • Iphone 4s shuts down when it battery life gets to about 17%. prior to IOS 7 it would shut down at about 1%. What's up? (Oh, when I plug in recharge, the battery indicates it's at 17% or so. So, I'm not referring to battery drain).

My iPhone 4s shuts down when battery indicater reaches about 17%. When I recharge, indicater shows about 17%, so apparently this isn't fast battery drain. Oh, this happens since IOS7.

  • Macbook shuts down when low battery instead of going to sleep

    Hi
Well basically my laptop shuts itself down instead of going to sleep when my battery gets low. I also do not get the low battery message. My macbook will usually shut down when it gets to approximately 6% of battery life. What should I do?
    Thanks
    Sarah.

Have you done the battery update? You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.
If it doesn't work you may need a new battery. The original core duo batteries have had an extra year added to their warranty so even if your computer is not covered the battery is. My MacBook was doing the same thing except at 28%. Apple replaced my battery and it works fine now.
If you call Apple be polite but firm some people have had trouble from some of the reps. Mine went smoothly I had a new battery in 3 days.

  • Why is my phone shutting down when the battery is @ 94% doing anything with it? Is the recent upgrade a chance to get us to buy and Iphone 4?

My I phone 3ga 16gb shuts down when I open any app and surf any webpage unless plugged in to the charger. I have 94% battery and as long as I don't do anything with the phone except answer it when I get a call it will stay on. I recently upgraded it to the 4.3.5 os and was wondering if that is my problem? if it is how do I get it back to an older operating system?

Highly unlikely that 4.3.5 itself is the problem as there would be millions with the same problem... there are not.
Restore your 3GS from your backup.  If still a problem, restore as new, i.e. without your backup.  One of those will most likely solve your problem.  If not, you may have a defective battery.

  • My iPhone shuts down when the battery still has about 30%

When I then try to restart, it won't, but just show the red low battery icon with the charger cable telling me to recharge first. When I then plug in the charger, it shows maybe still 27% and starts to charge. Before this problem occured my iPhone went down to 1% or so and only THEN shut down automatically.
Have reset my iPhone and "recalibrated" the battery (total discharge followed by a full charge to 100% with original iPhone charger). Problem persists.
    Thanks for any help!

Sorry, iPhone 4S, but IOS 7 something.

  • MBP shutting down when on battery

    Hi all!
I've got a problem with my one-year-old MacBook Pro: each time (and I mean EACH time) I run it on the battery, it simply shuts down after a while, even when the battery icon/indicator in the toolbar says I've got 70% left.
One quick look in the Battery settings shows that I've already gone through 74 cycles of charge/discharge (by last count), so I'm far from the 500 they say a battery can reasonnably sustain before replacement. The current (guffaw, guffaw) battery is the one I got from Apple last summer when it became clear they'd used a bad batch, the previous winter. It's been working alright for almost ten months, then boom!, it's started acting out again. Should I put in for a new replacement (I took the 3-year warranty), could the last update related to battery life have some unwanted effect on mine, or is there some other way to solve it?
Also, I don't hear the fan(s) in my MacBook Pro at all, but it was running hot from the start, so I finally bought a fancy little tablet with three fans embedded in it, and now the temp is normal; said "tablet" is USB-powered, but when my battery problems started again, every time, the tablet was off.
    So...?

    Welcome to the forums!
The symptoms you describe are consistent with premature failure of your battery. Apple states the symptom as "Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300." (Copied from this page, which DigitalDude kindly linked to above.)
I think Ned is incorrect about them replacing your battery for 2 reasons: 1) you say have the 3 year applecare plan, and 2) Apple extended the warranty coverage to 2 years from date of purchase for all Core Duo machines (this is separate from the battery exchange program). The warranty extension for Core Duo machines is stated near the bottom of the page linked above.
Call AppleCare - they should replace your battery.
    Hope this helps...

  • My iPhone shuts down when the battery is still 18%, what's wrong?

Sooo my phone started to shut down sooner and sooner (5% - 9% and now 18%).
I usually charge it every night and in the morning it says 100%.
Also, the battery percentage drops a lot in a short amount of time.
I don't use my phone excessively or anything so I don't understand why it would just shut down like this.

To answer your questions in sequence:
    1) You can't, really: the symptoms your Mac is exhibiting point at a loose or next-to-dead back-up battery. Only way to find out is to test it, and to do that, you must open your machine, locate the battery and test it with a battery tester (see here for more info on how to open your Mac; make sure to select the right model)
    2) It's actually the opposite: when you must use your Mac on the battery, well, then, do it, but if you're sitting at your desk, or, like me, on your sofa, with your MBP on your lap, simply keep it plugged into the main.
An additional measure to preserve your battery, that applies less to the recent Unibody design, but is helpful for ealier adopters of the MacBook Pro: don't leave your machine plugged in when it's turned off; it prevents a slow, natural depletion of the battery, and will play against you in the long run.
Last but not least: battery calibration is required once a month for older MacBook Pro models (non-Unibody, basically). If your machine belongs to that era kids the age of Justin B. don't even imagine ever existed, check here.

  • IPhone 5 keeps shutting down when battery is stating good battery strength.

My iPhone 5 has been regularly shutting down when the battery percentage is showing random charge. Sometimes it shuts down at 20% and the highest has turned off at is 73%. It then says battery is empty and needs recharging, but when phone turns on again it says the battery percentage that it turned off at. Today, the phone was charging for 6 hours and it still said the battery was empty. It finally turned on after another 6 hours but battery said 26%.   Is this just a need for a new battery or something more seriously wrong with phone?

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0
If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue.  To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new.  This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings.  Then test it out for a day or two.  If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced.  If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself:  http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription
If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue.  This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself.  What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.
But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device:  http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html
Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below:  "IPSW with iTunes"
    And your done.
    Problem solved.
I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.
    I hope this helps.

  • Macbook shuts down when plugged

I have my macbook for 2 years, and last month it started to behave in a weird way.
First when I let the battery drain out it shuts down when the battery reaches around 2-3%, it doesn't go into deep sleep. I've checked the battery capacity and it's around 2852mAh, and the check battery sign just started to pop. I'll probably have to buy a new battery. (That doesn't bother me much, because I use it mainly plugged on power.)
But last week it has gotten worse, now my macbook started to shut down when it's plugged. It takes a minute so I can reboot it (not even the battery indicator works for a while), and the charger stops working right after it's off. I'm using a new 85w charger (the old one got ripped off), because they don't sell the 65w here in Brazil. Needless to say I've tried do reset the SMC, PRAM, NVRAM.
Ps: On january I upgraded my RAM with some used module I got from buddy of mine.
Pps: You should know that there's no apple store in Brazil. Don't tell me to ask the genius :P

I took my macbook to a apple technical support provider, and they're replacing my charger. I wonder if the faulty charger could have damaged my battery, the check battery sign first appeared after the shutdowns caused by the charger.
