MBA Superdrive and ibook G4

Hi. I think, based on what I've read elsewhere here, that I know the answer to this but want to be sure. I have the MBA SuperDrive. Bought it to upgrade to SL. Meanwhile, son's ibook G4 goes wonky and am doing a "clean" reinstall. Disc 1 is stuck in his G4 and can't get it to eject for insertion of Disce 2 [let alone 3 and 4]. Am wondering if rather than risk getting Disc 2 stuck - should I ever manage to get 1 out - can I use the MBA Superdrive in his G4. Think the answer is no. But...am ever optimistic. BTW, any suggestions on getting that disc out? Hope the drive hasn't died. Sigh. Thanks in advance!

Hi missquotable,
You are correct, the MacBook Air SuperDrive is only compatible with the MacBook Air and the 24" LED Cinema Display. I can't confirm it has compatibility with the 30" Cinema Display but I know it didn't work on my 23" Cinema Display.
Regarding the question, you can share the drive out to the iBook G4. If you upgrade the iBook G4 to at least OS X 10.4.11 (or higher) and ensure that the DVD & CD Sharing tool is installed you can share out the contents of the MacBook Air's SuperDrive across a WiFi network. It'll be slow, but it'll work.

I need recommendations for an emac 1.42 and ibook 1.33, OS 10.3 - 10.5 compatible external superdrive ?

If you need the drive to be able to boot those Macs, you'll need FireWire connectivity. If you ned to use a system optical disk to upgrade or re-install the OS. or repair your hard drive, you must boot from the optical drive. If either computer's built-in optical drive has failed, or does not support reading DVDs, you'l need to boot from an external sooner or later.
If all you need is a burner, then USB opticals are cheaper and should work fine.

  • Eject key not working with MBA Superdrive

For MBA owners with MBA Superdrive, could you please let me know if the Eject key is working? I just bought a MBA Superdrive but the Eject key on the keyboard is not ejecting disc. When i press the Eject key, i don't see the gray Eject icon on the screen, unlike all other function keys (for example, volume control, keyboard backlight control and screen brightness control). I can ctrl-click (or right-click) on the disc and select "Eject" to eject disc. If i do a ctrl-Eject, i can get the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now" window to show up so the Eject key does not appear to have any physical or electrical issue. I can also boot into Boot Camp (Windows 7) and the Eject key works perfectly.
I have installed and uninstalled Virtual Box and Parallels so i am not sure if my problem is related to that.
Apple's tech support recommendation is to do an archive install, which in theory will keep all my personal data but create a new Systems folder. But i would like to try something less drastic before going that route.

Thanks. I not only did an "archive install" of Snow Leopard, i also did a erase install. But the Eject key is still not working like it's supposed to. I think i am going to try clearing the PRAM next.

  • MBA Superdrive - Is it worth it?

    Folks,
About to invest in a MBA tomorrow, just thinking about the external disk drive aka MBA Superdrive - is it worth getting one?
At this moment, I've no idea how much I might need one / not use it. But was working on the old cliche, it's better to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it.
I'm going for a high spec 11" MBA, so suspect that it might very soon take over the 13" MBP I already have, but then without the Superdrive, I'd be stuck for loading data / applications etc?
    Any thoughts?
    TIA

You asked whether it was worth it. This could be taken one of two ways. Either you are asking if the Apple branded product is worth the extra money, over another brand of external DVD drive, or you are asking whether it is worth having an external DVD drive at all.
I have a MBP 13 and a MBA 11. When I had occasion to install software (office 2011) on my MBA, I used the Remote Disk capabilities of my Macs to load the software onto the MBA from my MBP. So, if you have that, you don't really need another DVD drive at all.
I later found that my Toshiba external DVD drive that I had bought for one of my PC Netbooks worked just fine on the MBA. I could even watch DVD movies and burn DVD's. So, if cost is a consideration, you can get an external DVD drive that would be a lot less money than the Apple Superdrive.
I later bought the Superdrive. Why? Because I was impressed with the matching unibody case, and I am an Apple Nerd. Yes, it's completely emotional reasoning, but it was worth it for me.
One distinct downside of the Superdrive, aside from the cost, is the really lousy cord implementation Apple used. First, it's awfully short. Don't even think you can use the device other than right next to the port you are using on the Air. Second, it's non-removable. The cord juts out perpendicular to the drive, and you'll likely damage the cord if you case it in anything that doesn't allow the cord plenty of room to hang freely away from the drive. You can't fold the cord alongside or around the drive. I found that the only workable storage solution for the Superdrive is to use the original box it came in.

  • Problems with epub 3 and iBooks 2

Problems with fixed layout epub 3 and iBooks version 2
I am producing an epub 3 fixed layout ebook. My query is whether there is a known issue with epub 3 and the old version of iBooks - iBooks 2.
The epub has passed verification with epubcheck 3.0.1 and I have viewed the file on my iPad with iBooks 3.2 as well as on iBooks on my Mac, and also through the Chrome browser using Readium. In all cases the layout is fine. But when the file is downloaded onto an old iPad using iBooks 2, the layout is all mixed up. The iPad says that its operating system of OS.5 is up-to-date , and will not allow it to be updated, and thus it's impossible to update iBooks to versions 3.
So my question is whether this is a known issue with fixed layout epub 3 and versions 2 of iBooks, and if so whether there is a work around to allow fixed layout epub 3 to be read on iBooks2.

Follow-up query: (apple-ibooks-display-options) file needed in epub 3??
I tried adding the old (apple-ibooks-display-options) file to the META INF folder, as you used to for fixed layout epub 2, and the file displayed perfectly on the older version of iBooks, as well as on the latest iBooks. This leads me to ask whether you still need to add the 'apple-ibooks-display-options' file to epub 3, to make them readable on old versions of iBooks, or whether this indicates that some of the settings stating this is pre-paginated etc. are not entered correctly in the content.opf file, but I have checked this and I don't think so.
Any advice on this would be very welcome.

    Hello vinnyvg
I have an image of a map, each country has a text which links to the corresponding chapter to that country. The connection is made via a text link that connects to a box, which I am using to make a black background the size of the entire page, this box is labeled as diagram (info panel) and the text link connects directly to her.
I have already put all the links in the upper layer as you suggested, but it did not work.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

On my iPad, I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  I have rebooted the iPad and that did not help, and reinstalled iBooks, which also changed nothing.  Thanks for any ideas!

Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.

  • I recently downloaded a book and it will not open due to being incorrectly formatted. Even though I downloaded this FROM iTunes!!!! What is going on, I have the latest OS and iBook version....??????????

I recently downloaded a book "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day" and iBooks tells me its incorrectly formatted even though I downloaded this from iTunes and have the latest version of the iBooks app.  What is going on? I want a refund if this doesn't work.  My other books open fine.

The Report a Problem link can also be found in iTunes/Store/View Account/Purchase History.
Before asking for a refund, also try deleting the book and redownloading it.
If you find that the iBookstore is does not meet your needs, you can try one of the others like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Googlebooks, or Sony.

  • Printer Sharing with eMac, iMac, and iBook not working

Hello, everyone. I hope you guys can help me out with this:
I have an Epson Stylus CX4600 hooked up to my eMac via USB. My eMac prints fine with it. The eMac is getting its internet via an Ethernet wire going downstairs into my Linksys Router, which sends my Shaw internet to my iBook, my iMac, and my eMac.
I want to allow the iMac and iBook to access the printer over the network directly, so I can just print from those computers and have it come out the eMac printer.
I've looked at many articles on this. So far I've installed the drivers on all computers, plus they can all network to each other over File Sharing, so they are connected.
But I haven't been able to print yet. The most I've been able to do is get the files I try to print from the iBook and iMac to show up on the eMac, in its printer queue. Only it didn't show up for a LONG time. And when it did, the jobs automatically stopped and everytime I clicked start, it would automatically switch back to stopped again. The files would not print.
At this point, I want to get the iBook connected to it first. If I can do that, I'll try the iMac. But the iBook is first priority. I've tried making it connect to the Printer using IPP (IP Printing), and the result was... what I explained in the above paragraph. I also tried just ordinary Printer Sharing, but it said something close to this:
"Unable to locate eMac.local, Unknown host."
That hardly makes sense, because at that time I also tried getting the iBook connected to the eMac over File Sharing which worked. For some reason, the "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" files don't show up in my Network thing when I connect to them, or even when they're not connected. HOWEVER, I think they did at one point. I could swear I saw "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" in the Servers folder in the Network section of the iBook at one point. But it's no longer there.
Please help. I've described my problem as well as possible. What a long post. If there's any way to make my eMac, iMac, and iBook be able to print through my Epson Stylus CX4600 at any time directly, then I'll do it.
    Help!

Yes. I did say that my eMac, iMac, and iBook are all
connected to the internet and networked to each other
over the Linksys router. I believe the router is
still on factory settings because we never really
"set" or programmed anything with it.
Mac OS 9.2.2 on the iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the
    other two. IP addresses?
192.168.1.100 is what I would use to connect to the
    eMac from the other computers.
This is the eMac's IP, correct? Did you type it into Network, or was it assigned by the router's DHCP?
192.168.1.101 is what I would use to connect to the
    iBook from the other computers.
This is the iBook's IP, right? Again, fixed or DHCP?
192.168.1.102 is what I would use to connect to the
    iMac from the other computers.
    Same for this IP.
The iBook, as I've said, is wired. No wireless
    connections to speak of.
Okay. Now, if the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP, what range was it configured for? My Linksys, for example, is configured to hand out IPs in the range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. It has the IP 192.168.0.1, so the IPs 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 are available for me to hand out as fixed IPs. If I was to hand out 192.168.0.100 as a fixed IP, the router's DHCP server would have a potential problem, as it might hand out that address too, and only one device can have a particular IP address on a particular network. If your router is handing out 192.168.1.100, .101, and .102 via DHCP, you could and probably do have a conflict if you've got those addresses set up as fixed IPs. In particular, if you have anything else on the network, including Bonjour-enabled devices such as printers, you're likely to have a conflict.
Best way to resolve a conflict, if any:
1 set all the Macs to either DHCP, or if fixed IPs are required, to a fixed IP outside the range of the DHCP range on the router. (Or you could just turn off DHCP on the router.)
2 check the router to be sure that DHCP is set the way you want it, and the DHCP pool is what you think it is.
    3 shut down the Macs.
4 turn off the router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
5 turn the Macs back on, one at a time.
On my Linksys, the way to set the DHCP pool is simple:
1 log into the router. (My router IP: 192.168.0.1. Yours would be 192.168.1.1.) Hit the 'Setup' tab. Verify the gateway IP. (Should be the router's IP. If it's not, something very strange is happening.) Verify the start of the DHCP pool. Verify that DHCP is on (or off, as you want). Verify the end of the DHCP pool. (My start is 192.168.0.10, and there are 245 IPs in the pool, so the end is 192.168.0.254. If I changed the number of IPs to 200, the end of the pool would be 192.168.0.209, and I'd be able to set the IPs 192.168.0.200 to 254 as fixed IPs if I wanted.) If your router allows for IPs to be reserved, you can set up reserved IPs for one or more of your Macs. (A reserved IP is an IP the router holds for a specific device. The network card in each computer has a specific MAC address; if that address is registered with the router, then every time that computer is turned on and connected it will get the IP that was reserved for it... so long as that IP is in the DHCP range and DHCP is turned on. Think of it as a fixed IP without your having to actually fix the IP.)

That's simply not possible I'm afraid. You'd need to give them their own account and allowance or make it so you are required to be there to input the password when they wish to make a purchase.

  • How to share and update one iTunes master library on an external HD between an iMac and iBook

Hi.  I am in the process of consolidating and switching gears from storing my iTunes libraries (which have roughly the same files) on both my iMac and iBook (both OS 10.7.5) to creating one master library on an external hard drive (Canvio Connect 2TB) and sharing that between both computers, updating the laptop (which I use less frequently) when necessary. I wanted to know if this is possible and if so, how to go about doing this in a way where I don't lose any data and am able to maintain it efficiently.  Thanks!

There is a library file on the external drive that contains a list of all the tracks you have put into iTunes.  The list points to media files iTunes plays are on the external drive too.  Using the instructions I provided you tell the iTunes application on each computer to start up using the library file on the external drive.  If you add a file to iTunes while using computer #1 the file will be copied to the media folder on the external drive and the library file on the external drive will be updated to show there is a new file.  When you plug the same drive into computer #2 and start iTunes it takes the file listing from the library file on the external drive.  You are using the one library with each computer and it exists only on the external drive which both computers use.  They are truly sharing the same single copy of the  library.
I have a box with objects inside and a list inside with an updated inventory of the objects. I give the box to you. You take some objects out and put some in and make a note in the list of what you have done, then put the list back inside and hand the box to me.  How do I know what changes you have done?  Simple.  I open the box and look at the list.  It's the same list that was in your hands only moments before.  I add a few objects and update the list, put it back inside the box and hand the box to you.  How do you know what changes have been made? Simple.  Open the box and read the list which was the one I updated moments before.  The only copy of the list is in the box so neither of us is needing to keep our own copy of the list updated.
Everything iTunes needs to generate your library listing is in the iTunes folder, but it doesn't have to be on the computer.  In your case it will all be on the external drive and each copy of the iTunes application on each computer will look and use the same identical library file on the external drive as you pass it from computer to computer.  Once you have set this up you can delete the entire iTunes folder in Music from your computer because the application will no longer be using it.  The only thing "iTunes" left on the computer will be the application itself, but each copy will have been told to use the library on the external drive.
Okay, enough.  I've said the same thing about 4 ways now.

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.

    Hi jybravo70,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you may be experiencing issues on your non iOS 8 devices because iOS 8 is required to set up or join a Family Sharing group.
The following information is located in the print at the bottom of the article.
Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing
Family Sharing requires a personal Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. Music, movies, TV shows, and books can be downloaded on up to 10 devices per account, five of which can be computers. iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality. Not all content is eligible for Family Sharing.
    Have a great day,

My iPad 2 was recently updated wtih IOS 6.0.1 and iBook 3.0.1. After the recent update some of my interactive epub files are not working properly. Mainly slideshows, working fine earlier, where I have used jquery and javascript. Does anyone know why? Is there a bug in the updates. Thanks for helping me out of this problem.

    LadyAce
Did you see a release note on it somewhere or did you find out through your own experience with it?
Since it was a quietly released 13.3 I am curious what it fixed officially. According to the release notes from Apple with 6.0.1 it did not make any mention that it was patching the data leaking when using WiFi and cell data. Only that complaints of dropped wifi from people using iPads and iPhones that was previously reported was fixed.
