MBA to HDTV question

Have my MBA connected to a Panasonic TV via the Belkin mini display to HDMI adaptor - the MBA sees the Panasonic, but the TV is not seeing an incoming signal from the MBA.  Do I need to configure the MBA in some way to send video out the Thunderbolt port?  Thanks for the help.

All the settings are in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.  This tab will only appear if the MBair recognizes that the monitor is attached.  Turn your TV to the proper HDMI input channel and you should see the default desktop wallpaper.   This is extended desktop mode where the monitor is logically located to the right of the MBair.  Dragging an app off the right side of your desktop should make it appear on the TV.
Try toggling CMD F1 to switch to mirror mode and back.  See if you get a signal.
You can also set the resolution for the monitor in System Preferences.  If none of this works, look at the options in the Panasonic.

  • Any way to surf net on MBA using HDTV as monitor w/out cable?

My MBA is connected via a 2-wire modem/router, and I access the Internet wirelessly.  Just bought an LG 32" HDTV (1080p, 60hz).  I want to surf the net on my MBA and use the TV as a monitor.  It works flawlessly when using a minidisplay to HDMI cable.  But...I want to do the same thing, but without the cable.  Don't like cable strung out across the floor.  Apple Box or Roku won't allow surfing...you have to use their apps or subscribe to apps.  Can this "wireless" dream of mine be done?  Apple says "No"...but what do you guys say?   My poor head is spinning!  I bought the Air to do just this, and now find out it apparently won't work!!!

Hopefully they add it in the future to the Apple TV, but ya it isn't possible now.
If this is a must have feature and you can return the Air still, the Lenovo U300s Ultrabook has Intel's WiDi wireless mirroring capablility and is a nice machine.

  • RX800XL-VT2D256E HDTV Question

I bought this card a while ago, like 3 months. I've enjoyed it very well, but up until this point have never tried the "HDTV" part of it out. The provided user guide is laughable on the subject, as a matter of fact it doesn't say a damn thing! But anywats, thats besides the point. I was wondering if you people here, knew how to hook this up properly. I've done S-videobefore, on my old card. But this HDTV one, is alot more interesting. I have that red square that comes off of the rod chord thing. On one end it has S-VID in, and Composite in, and an HDTV on/off switch. And on the other end it has S-VID out and Composite out. So is it as easy as hooking up my composite video connectors fomr my PC to my TV's video in section (one that supports HDTV obviosuly) and choosing the tv as my display? Or? Did I miss sometihng?

I have the same problem, the video capture works from windows media but i can't see that well from a 2 inch window.  I need an software that can show my video full screen without saving it.
As far as i know it doesnt come with a workng Vivo software.  There is one (in the CD) but it just messes up the catalyst drivers.

  • Connecting MBA to HDTV

This is going to be my first time connecting my Macbook Air to a TV. I would like to know what I need in order to do that and get the best display quality. I already have an HDMI cable that I bought a long time ago and that is connected in a PS3. Do I have to buy a new one or can I use it. What else do I need besides an HDMI cable?

I bought the cable from amazon - works perfectly (sound and audio)!

Also.. If the content is on your Mac, streaming it to your PS3 is easy to setup, and it works very well with PS3 media Server (free software):

  • HDTV Question

I plan on buying a new tv to mount on the wall...I'm a Sony fan, and have been for quite sometime when it comes to TV's, but my dilemma is this-how do you know what size is appropriate?  I want to be able to get the biggest size that will still be a good fit for my living room.  I don't want it so small you can't see it, but I don't want to feel like it's to big either...any suggestions on how to pick the size?

  • Photoshop or Aperture on MBA

Anyone out there using Photoshop CS5 or Aperture on a MacBook Air? I'm looking to maybe sell my MacBook Pro, get a new iMac for the heavy lifting, but maybe buy a MBA for travel for importing, tagging, and doing light work in Aperture and maybe Photoshop.
If you have it, or tried it, any thoughts?  Is ridiculously slow?  I have a core 2 duo MBP.  With the SSD drive I'm thinking it can't be too much slower than that.
    Thanks

    Hi Scott,
I've used both of those programs with perfectly acceptable performance. I would however strongly encourage you to consider the 13" model with 4GB. I was quite disappointed with the screen real estate on the 11" MBA and I question the "future proofing" of a machine with only 2GB of RAM that cannot be upgraded, especially using CS5.
My local Apple Store has Aperture and CS5 loaded up on their MacBook Airs, if you have a local store it might be worth calling them to confirm if they also have the same image on their floor machines. It's worth playing with the machine before the investment.

  • MBA Display features the same like MBP?

    Hi,
I want to buy a MBA and my question: Does the MBA reduce the Display brightness if I didn't use it, after a short time? I see this on the MBP 15". I didn't mean that the display will went to black screen, it just change the brightness of the screen after one minute.
Maybe someone can check it here for me? Would be great.
    Thanks

That's a setting within OS X. All Apple notebooks have that feature/ability since it is a part of the OS that enables it.

  • MacBook Air 2013 with Windows 8.1 installed with Bootcamp

Hello , I have a fairly new 2013 MBA 8g , 128ssd, i5 and I installed windows 8.1 with Parallels 9 but it was eating my battery life so so fast and I really didn't like the Parallels experience. I uninstalled and wiped my MBA to factory settings to get a clean MBA.
My question is if I use Bootcamp to install Windows 8.1 will that destroy my battery life just as bad when I'm not booted and using windows but booted and using the MBA OS. I believe you can boot into Mac OS or Windows at start up.
    Thanks

parallels and vm ware are a well known system hog! they will drain your battery while consuming ram and resources. although this is harmless to your mac per say, once turned off the mac goes back to normallity abeit with a low battery.
the answer to your question is bootcamp does not drain your battery any more than normal use would do.
    hope this helps.

  • Aperture, Macbook Air, Thumbnail Size

I am planning on using Aperture on my desktop, but
would like to be able to sync my Aperture Library (with referenced originals)
to my MacBook Air, mainly for viewing.
Since the same previews will be used on my desktop and laptop,
I will generate 1900X1200 medium quality previews. I figured
out that this should take about 250K, and with the addition
of other data should come out to about 300K per image on average.
Thus, a library of, say, 50K images, should consume about 15GB.
Quite a lot for a 80GB MBA disk, but bearable.
Unfortunately, I found out that the average storage per image is
about 700K, with half of it devoted to the thumbnail.
I did not expect that, since thumbnails are only 1024X768 as far as I know.
Apparently they are not compressed much. This will yield
a 30GB library which is too large for my MBA.
    My questions:
    - Is there any way to make the thumbnail more compressed?
    - Any other strategies for using MBA for viewing (and maybe organizing)
    Aperture libraries?
Meanwhile, somebody pointed to me a discussion in this forum about referenced libraries not shrinking after deleting images. This will make the whole idea even less attractive .
    Thanks
    Shaul

There are plenty of strategies for working with multiple computers. They usually involve exporting/importing projects. If you would like a brief summary of how to do this I will be glad to provide a sort of guide on multi machine workflow that works for many of us that work on location and have a main library back at the base.
If you want to carry around a sort of "best of" on your MBA and also have a few working project the best way to do that is:
    1) Create a new empty project on your main machine.
    2) Set up a library level smart album for what ever your "best of" or greatest hit or whatever are.
    3) Drag that smart album into the new project. (doesn't really matter but will keep you organized)
    4) Select all the images in that smart album and use new from selection->album (this is required trust me)
    5) Use file export project on that new project that contains the album just created
    6) Import the project on to your MBA
Now you have all of the stuff that you really want on your MBA, to update it Just re-do steps 4-6 every once in a while. Obviously get rid of that project off of your MBA when you do.
As for other in progress projects create them on either library and use import export library any time you like to take it with you or put the project into your main library. When you export a project it will consolidate the masters into the exported project. When you import a project the masters will be managed, just use relocate master to put them where they belong in your main library.
IF you want some more info or this is not clear let me know.

  • Mirroring a MBA to 1080 HDTV - TV2 or TV3?

    OK folks, I want to mirror a MBA 11 (1366x768) to a 1080 HDTV (1920x1080). I think I need a TV3 but not sure so here's the question:
I've found people who wants to display their notebook screen to an HDTV, many time the picture come out fussy, not sharp compared as in notebook screen, I (half educated guess) this is due to the notebook pixels are not being mapped 1:1 to the HDTV.  So, that's what I want to do, I want to map the MBA's 1:1 to my HDTV, if the result that I get black borders on the HDTV, that's OK, but I want a sharp display on the HDTV.
Am asking about a TV2 because I can get a used one cheap. but 1366x768 -> 1280x720 look like I'll be missing some information, *IF* I insist on 1:1 pixel mapping.
I like to know what your folks real-life experience with this matter?
    TIA

    Hi,
I don't about your ratio question but AppleTV 2 is only 720P capable.  If you want full HD at 1080P, you need an AppleTV 3.  That's basically the only difference between the two.  As for how this relates to AirPlay mirroring, I will let other answers.

  • Mac Mini Purchase Question HDTV

    Hello,
I want to buy a mac mini for an entertainment computer. I think the hdmi out will be great.
All I want to do is watch movies through my samsung 55" HDTV.
I am wondering if the basic model will be enough or should I get a suped up model.
If I need a suped up model, what do I need. More RAM, Processor Power, or what? I use a shared network drive at home so storage is not an issue.
    Thanks,
    James

"Watch movies" could mean a lot of things. If you are talking about purchased iTMS content then a minimum configuration will be fine. If you are talking about movies from other sources, then it becomes harder to answer the question without knowing more about the sources.
Certain very high bit rate content, like 1080p at high frame rates and encoded in such a way that hardware decoding can't be used...movies like that could give trouble without some thought and care put into the configuration. But most likely, you will be fine with a minimum configuration.

  • Questions about the insignia 32 inch 1080 p hdtv

Hey. I am looking to purchase a new tv but I have a few questions.
    1) Is this tv a good one for gaming? I have an xbox 360 and want to know how it would play.
    2) Does it have a slot for an optical audio cable? I have an external sound card with 5.1 speakers hooked to it. The card has an optical audio slot and id like to hook it to my tv so I can use my surround sound on the tv.
    3) At my college only normal channels are available and not HDTV channels. Will regular channels look bad on this tv?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The insignia has optical output yes, standard def, looks like any other TV with HD, its fine although HD is preferred. Playing xbox 360 on it should be no problem.

  • Tech question re: stealth mirroring MacBook to HDTV?

    Greetings Apple family,
I understand how to mirror using the HDMI very well, that is mirroring exactly what is on my MacBook screen to the HDTV. My question therefore is, would it be possible to mirror for example only a Safari screen shot to the TV, while I'd be working on a Word file on the MacBook?
Thanks for the anticipated co-op everyone!
    God bless,
    Chris
    Gr. 7 Teacher

I think you can do it.
While you're plugging the HDMI wire, go to Apple - System Preferences- then select Disply.
Next go under Arrangement and adjest your displays secreen. Choose one to display Safary and the other to work on whatever you want.
    I hope this is work!

  • MBA Questions

I've had the MBA for about a month and a half, and I have a few questions.
    1. My number of battery cycles is 22, and battery health is 95%. Is this normal? I'm not sure I'm practicing the correct battery habits.
    2. I want to try out a basic flight simulator on my Mac partition. Every time I try to download the file, the CPU temperature jumps and fan speed increases slowly. I don't want to do damage to my MBA, so I stop the download. Is there a reason for the CPU temperature and fan speed increases? I'm running other very graphic-intensive programs on my Windows partition just fine.

I have a 1.86 Ghz MBA that's about 1 1/2 years old (Rev B or C?). iStat shows 121 cycles and 92% battery health. As you can see, I don't often use the computer on battery - it's plugged in most of the time. I do, however, try to remember to drain it completely once a month and recharge.
As for the download: I'm no expert but I wouldn't worry about the fan/CPU temperature as you describe. I often run Win7 in Fusion and move back and forth between the two O/Ss; the fan comes on and the machine gets noticeably hotter, but it continues to work just fine. I doubt very much that you have any issue with your download.

  • Three questions about the MBA...

    Hiya,
Here's my first question: What is the resolution on the iSight camera that's built into the MBA? Is it the same as the ones on the other MacBooks, or is it different? I was reading AppleInsider's review of the MBA and they say that the MBA uses "a similarly lower end video camera" that seems to have a lower resolution than the 1.3 megapixel iSight cameras on the other MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Also, Apple's own specs for the MBA doesn't say specifically what the resolution is for it. But AppleInsider is claiming that pictures taken with the MBA's iSight camera are "visibly softer" and don't work in Photo Booth for some reason. :S (If you'd like to see the AppleInsider review I was looking at, here it is: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/02/04/macbookair_hdd_model_an_in_depthreview.html. Please go to page 5 of this review to see what AppleInsider is talking about with the iSight camera--it's pretty much the first thing they address on that page.)
Also: Is it true that it's not possible to turn off the wi-fi on the MBA? I was doing some window shopping at a Micro Center in my neighborhood and happened to talk about the MBA with some salespeople in the (Windows) laptop department, and they claimed that the wi-fi on it couldn't be turned off. Or, rather, they said that there was no visible, physical wi-fi button on the MBA, so they took that to mean that there was no way to turn the wi-fi off at all. Personally, I find this really hard to believe--surely there's some internal system preference that allows someone to turn off the wi-fi because it's obviously not going to be needed all the time?--but I want to hear from MBA owners here and see what you guys have to say about this.
And finally...assuming the wi-fi can be turned off, how many hours the MBA run? I haven't seen anyone answer this question yet, and I'd really like to know because I don't think I'll be using an MBA with the wi-fi always on.

LOL! I figured as much. I figured that the MBA's like my iPod touch and the wi-fi controls are in the system preferences somewhere. But yeah...those salesmen at MicroCenter were really digging into the MBA as they struggled to turn off some security controls that they'd tripped in their own department and had to talk loudly over their security alarms. To be fair, some of what they said is true:
--for the kind of money you'll have to pony up for even the cheaper MBA model, you can easily get a lot more laptop for the money. Of course, these (Windows) laptop salesmen weren't going to name any MacBooks that were in a different department in the store, but they started naming Sony Vaio's and such.
--there's no built-in optical drive. (Well, DUH. I thought this was understood? And to be fair, a lot of ultraportables don't have optical drives either, right? So this is nothing new.)
--the MBA is underpowered. And...yeah, I suppose that's true if you want to compare the MBA to other MacBooks or some other laptops in general. But if we compare the MBA to ultraportables or other slim/light notebooks, the MBA is still more powerful than them, isn't it? And speaking in terms of what I already have (a 5-year-old HP laptop running Windows XP), I'm sure that the MBA is more powerful and it's gonna run faster than this computer that I'm already using.
And then those salesmen just had to throw in the wi-fi comment. I went "Uh-huh" and walked out and let them keep talking and figure out how to turn off their security alarms. I'm not sure what these salesmen actually know about computers, but one thing was clear to me as I walked out of their department--they're willing to say just about anything to get a sale. I'd hate to think what they would tell me if I was honestly shopping around for one of their Windows laptops--I'd hate to hear the kind of trash they might tell me to make me buy a laptop and/or other products for it. :S
