MBA tooooo slow ... need help

I have a first genration MBA, I love it but it is very frustrating that it is gotten so slow in the last month or so. So I bought the Genious Drive and went through the whole schpiel, checked permissions, and even did a defrag (although I thought for UNIX system you don't need a defrag). Nothing has helped.
To open MS Word it takes literally 1:15 minutes to get word up and running.
So I read in here that I might want to re-install the OS. I don't want to re-install all the apps I have.
Soooo here is the question. How can I re-install the OS without having to re-install the apps.
What do I need to back up and how do I re-install it after the new OS is up and running.

This problem has nothing to do with fans. The problem manifests itself at all temperatures.

This is a software problem - the kernel is occupying massive amounts of CPU time in the log_level function.
... which explains why a hardware repair fixed the issue. Right.
As I noted in the post I linked earlier, I don't claim every MBA suffering "kernel_task" issues has a hardware fault, but it certainly was for me.

Hi everybody!
I need help with my Mac OS Mountain Lion.
Was working fine with it since it got released, but yesterday suddenly it became exteremely slow. It literally thinks for 20 minutes on any operation I'm trying to do, showing me the loading spin icon. Screen freezes, everything is not responsive at all and I just have to wait for ages till something is moved a bit and then it thinks again.
I don't see anything in particular in the logs. CPU load is low, memory using is low, all temperatures are fine. I even cleaned up the stuff with CleanMyMac app, didn't help.
Checked the hard drive with Disk Utility - didn't help either.
Please help, I'm hopeless and out of ideas what's wrong with it.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing, regardless of SMART status or anything else.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

ADSL - ridiculously slow - need help

Hi - i really need help! I've had ADSL (8MBs) at my house for 3 years now and I struggle to get it work at a resonable speed. My recent speeds tests have varied anywhere between 0.19Mbs to 1.6Mbs (if I'm lucky!!). Normally sits around 0.46Mbs. when I first moved in 3 yrs ago I could get 3Mbs (what luxury) but now, barely anything. Its makes it impossible to download anything! I have replaced the modem with a new Telstra a month ago and bought a new Cat5e cable. I only have 1 other item connected to the modem (solar reader). My WiFi seems to work faster than my cable (go figure?!) and my PC is only 1 year old and I've replaced the filter. It just seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have any hints. I've gone though the re-start process several times, and I've even tried downloading programs to speed it up. My next step is to call Telstra but last time I did that (when I was getting 3 Mbs) they told me I was more than 2kms away (almost exactly) from the exchange therefore it would reduced by half. But I haven't physically picked up my house and moved it away and I'm using the same phone line so I dont understand what the issue is. There was some work done on the phone pole behind my house a while ago, but this shouldnt affect my internet should it?? Telstra have always denied that the work would do anything to my internet...

just got this new unit, check my name, everything was slow, already did add new partitin for my files, have 2 questions as of now1) if i do system reload using acer recovery, will repartition my HDD back to same state the first time i turned this on?2) what bloatwares i need to remove? [SOLVED] 3D too slow, need help to find out why

Hi folks.
I tend to compile and use mesa from git. Most of the time I have no problems, but recently it all got screwed up. Everything was running fine, until suddenly, after an update, I could not play games anymore. Native or Win games using wine. They're just to slow. Like, 1 frame per 3-4 seconds. I've tried different kernel versions, different mesa versions, I inspected pacman.log trying to find what could be the reason of this. Nothing. Just to note, applications like Stellarium, for example, runs just fine (with vsyncing off it can achieve over 150 FPS), kwin effects run fine, video playback is perfect. But, as soon as I start a game like "World of Goo", or "Counter Strike" using wine - barely 1 fps. I have absolutely no idea what could be the cause of this. Please help!
Btw. all the logs are not displaying anything unusual.

Try
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo | grep render
That output should be fine.
Try
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose wine foobar.exe
and pay attention to the first few lines where it loads the driver. It should succeed with some driver from /usr/lib32/...
If this is so, then try
LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri wine foobar.exe
If it then works, then simply your path is wrong.
All that is assuming that you run 64 bit and have lib32-mesa-full etc. upgraded too.

Way too slow - need help!

I am tearing my hair out after installing/uninstalling/reinstalling both CS4 and CS5 on two different computers with the same results -- 30 seconds to make something bold? 20 seconds to delete text? Why is it running so unbearably slow?
I have WAY more than the minimum system requirements, so I know that isnt the problem. Have called support line but been on hold for too long.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any settings or options that i could look into that might make the program run faster? i have spent hours and hours trying to get it to work correctly with no luck.

Adobe Flash Player slow, jerky, and I NEED HELP A.S.A.P.

Hello everybody, and how are you all doing on this wonderful Friday?
Today after doing research on the support website for Adobe ShockWave flash player, I'm here as a last resourt.
Allow me to explain the issue!

THIS IS GOING TO BE EXTREMELY LONG, BUT I NEED HELP VERY VERY BADLY!!
I've waisted people's time because of this issue.
I'm using an HP Windows 7 Laptop with latest version of Windows 7!
I have Adobe ShockWave 11.7 the LATEST VERSION and It is a great program.
However in one of my simulators which is a V500 Evita Ventilator simulator from the company Drager, the performance is HORRID, and when I say horrid, I mean HORRID TIMES 30 and then some.
Keep in mind that this has been tested by the company on other computers, and it works just fine, however on mine the waveforms and data is choppy, slow and what it will do is it will be working smoothly one second, the next second It lags and then catches up, then lags again, and It basically drags along miserably. I used this program online and then when I contacted Drager the owners of the simulator, they thought I get a DVD of the simulator. THEY GAVE IT TO ME FREE OF CHARGE. I got it, and It was still slow and Jerky. I had used Google Chrome to use the simulator online HOWEVER, when I used the DVD, It was still slow. I have a LOAD of computer space, and have tried uninstalling Adobe Shockwave, Reinstalling it, then doing that several times. NOTHING. NOW WHAT??
I'm desperate right now. When I say DESPERATE, THIS HAS GOT TO BE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLY POSSIBLE.

The thing is other things that require Adobe Shockwave work just fine. I use a lot of simulators.

Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable. I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help. My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution. Need help.

MacBook Pro (mid 2012) is running super slow since I upgraded to Yosemite. Used CleanMyMac2 and freed up 22G. Verified and repaired disk permissions. I've ran a benchmark on my Mac (iMac early 2009). Performance of Yosemite in general was about the same as Mavericks. But that can be different on other Mac's of course. Safari is mostly a bit slower. It's recommended you clean your old internet-caches and then restart Safari. (you can use a little app called CCleaner to do that). That might make a difference. Speed-issues are usually solved in the first and second update of OS X.

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

Safari too slow to load a page, need help

Try this:
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Many, including me, have had success with adding DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
Less likely, but possible, is that the slowness is caused by a Trojan such as the one called 'DNSChanger' or 'OSZ.RSPlug', which can alter the DNS settings of your network connection. This particular Trojan can be inadvertently installed if you have come across certain Quicktime movies where got a window stating that you have to download and install a particular codec in order to see the video.
If you have agreed to that installation, your system can be infected and your DNS settings altered, which results in your system using the wrong DNS servers, which can slow web surfing to a crawl.
This can be fixed by downloading and running a freeware utility called DNSChanger Removal Tool which you can download from here:

Once you have run that utility you have to re-boot your Mac, then reset Safari, and re-enter your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network.

Purchasing MBA but need help on upgrades.

Hello, I am purchasing an MBA, but need help on upgrades based on the following; I will be attending medical school in the fall, I take a wide range of photos of my family on my iPhone that I play with on certain apps and do store them in the cloud and computer, I have a medium iTunes libaray but will get bigger with the additional apps for school, I am a moderate gamer (I play games online as well as my kids do, but nothing that will take up a ton of space when downloaded like Assassins Creed) and I plan on running MS Office. I've already decided to upgrade to the 8GB but I can't decide if I should upgrade to the 512GB Flash or stay with the 256GB and upgrade from the i5 to i7 or stick with it. I don't plan on buying another until I graduate. I am new to the Mac World outside of the use of my iPhone which convience me to convert from my awful PC. Can you MBA experts relay some advice on a good route. I appreciate it, Thanks

My rule of thumb is to buy the largest drive storage available. Especially since the Air models can't be upgraded to a larger size in the future. I also like to buy the most amount of RAM offer and as with the storage space on the Air models can't be upgraded once purchased. Also I suggest you spend the extra money on the Applecare extended warranty because to fix any Mac once the standard warranty is over is very expensive. You have until the one year standard warranty runs out to buy the Applecare extended warranty.
