Mba usually got 99.8% cpu usage
hi! i am start using my 13", 4gb ram mba a few weeks ago, but recently the mba usually got up to 99.8% cpu usage, when i got no application on background.
I have tried upgrading my os to the newest 10.6.8, but nothing change.
This also cause my cup temp reach ~70C usually, and the fan spinnning with speed of 6400.
Can anyone figure out whats the problem? many thanks:)

Hello Apple family,
I'm having an issue with my Macbook that is rather surprising. Couple days ago I formatted it since it was almost 3 years since the last one and it was running a Lion install on top of a Snow Leopard install and it was in need of a good summer cleaning. I also had noticed that some of the more heavy tasks I was probably making on it were a bit slow, as in casual gaming and watching videos. So I started a fresh install, here is basically everything I installed:
I also installed via Homebrew: git and postgresql (and their dependecies).
Other little things I've installed or changes I've made:
Installed OSX FUSE
Installed Apple Command Line Tools
Installed Zend Framework
Disabled Dashboard
When I finally reached running a game, I got the exact same issue I was having before the format, and let me describe that. At first I start running the task and it behaves very well, all computer is fluid no matter what.
The problem occurs after a more or less 30 seconds: the cpu usage drops. I don't see any other process taking its place or fighting for the same resources, the only process noticed that rises a bit more is kernel_task (it jumps from 5-6% to 10-12%), but I guess its normal since we are talking about more intensive tasks for the kernel. Here is a some screenshots of the problem playing Heroes of Newerth (I'm using atMonitor and the Apple Activity Monitor).
Normal behavior, high CPU usage
CPU usage drops
CPU usage comes back to normal
I also had this same problem in other games (Swords and Soldiers e.g.) and also watching flash videos (ESPN.com).
Lets focus on this screenshot in particular. At the moment of the screen shot you can see the process is behaving normally: processor is at 77%, GPU is at 46% and FPS are at 27. But if you take a look at the panel on the right side, you can see the history before that:
CPU dropped to 10-15% and before that was on the values that were expected.
Same thing for GPU: at the moment is at 46%, but before that was at 5% and at the start was at 46% as expected.
FPS also oscillate from 27FPS when the system is running good, to 5FPS when the system is running "low". I guess its a consequence of the other 2 behaving abnormally.
Also worth notice, the RAM is never near full (as you can see from the screenshot above it stays around 50%); and the log (any of them) are not displaying any message when the system "drops".
Some procedures I already took:
Reset PRAM, SMC
Apple Hardware Test: It hang up 2 times, both at the same spot: logic board
Repaired disk and disk permissions (from the boot DVD)
Reseted Spotlight index (it was my first suspicion that was wrong after all)
I'm really hopeless here. I've googled thousands of stuff, but they are all the opposite of my issue - usually complaining about high CPU usage. Hope someone can point me into some direction. I hope the post has all the information needed, if you need anything else just ask.
Thank you all.
PS: Sorry about any english mistakes.A couple of things I think you should check:
1) Regarding using 200 users and having a queue of thousands of requests... When you say that you have 200 users, this means that you will have maximum 200 threads simultaneously on the client side, right?
2) What is the read timeout on the client side? That could explain the number of threads in use in weblogic. Threads might be left running, and if the client stops waiting for the response and initiates a new connection, it could lead to the scenario you are describing.
3) As you said that the web application starts consuming less CPU when the issue happens and at the same time the queue increases, it seems to me that you might have a contention on the webservices. Are you also monitoring the webservices? Do they run in a different server? Is it deployed on the same physical server but in different weblogic server, or it's deployed in the same weblogic server?
4) Did you run performance test in the webservices on their own to make sure that they scale?
5) In this situation, I would run a separate performance test against the webservices. Then I would stub the webservices and run a performance test in the web application. By stubbing the webservices, I'm able to create any kind of behaviour I want. E.g: Simulate slow response times, respond under a consistent response time, etc.
6) Is there a read timeout between the web application and the web service?

Almost 90% CPU usage on youtube page
Hi,
Im am running Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and got almost 90% CPU usage on the following youtube page. I have a Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Can somebody give a good explanation for this?
http://www.youtube.com/user/googlenexus
Thanks, MitchThanks Neil,
Im using NI-DAQPad-6052E(firewire) which is not supported by NI-DAQmx driver.
In my application, the AO Buffer (2058 S) has to be filled each
loop interation with different ramp-data. At the moment I call AO Write
+ AO Start continuously. This work very bad and I'm looking for a
better (i.e faster) way to update the AO Buffer.
In each loop interation 1200 samples have to be written+read synchronously. One day, I
have to do experiments with more samples. I achiev "a kind of
synchrony" by inserting different delays. Unfortunately,
this boosts up the cycle time
I also have little problems with the AI steam: Calling AI Read +
AI Start each loop 6 times (AI Buffer: 512 S) doesn't acquire proper
data. If I would read buffer continuously, I don't know how to start +
stop it each loop interation.
Stupidly I have to start my experiments on Tuesday...

Safari 3.03 for Mac has high CPU usage usually above 70%
I look at the Activity Monitor and it shows Safari using a lot of CPU % around 70 % and some times near 100%
This High CPU usage is also a problem that has just started recently on my G4/667/1.5Gig Ram with a "Giga" 1.33GHz upgrade running System 10.4.10. My machine has been wonderful for years with this processor. I'm running Safari 2.0.4. When i did the last upgrades to my software I started having some real bad behavior from my mac. High CPU usage in safari (80-98%) for 3-5 minutes then normal like now I'm at 6-10% (Normal)as I type this in Safari. Safari is crashing when I try to open the Apple in store training site! Mail was crashing on my wife's login not mine though. Throwing out her mail Prefs fixed that. The Upgrades that seem to trigger this are Java for Mac OS 10.4 Release 6, Quick Time 7.3.1, GarageBand 4.1.1, iPhoto Update, iTunes 7.5. It sure feels like that last set of upgrades has made a mess of my mac. I suspect the Java update. How do I fix this mess???? [email protected]

Higher than usual softirqd CPU usage
I have a machine running 2 network interfaces, both are under constant network traffic of 1 megabit/s, I wonder if that is the reason for the high (?) softirqd/0 and softirqd/1 CPU usage, I've heard from a few bug reports I found on the net that the kernel parameter nohz=off has an effect on this behavior (I haven't tried it yet, but I will the next time the system is rebooted), here is (hopefully all) relevant information about the machine:

you could say it is normal because they used only 2 hours of CPU time per 12 days of continuous 1 megabit/s load on both cards, but here is what is strange: this system is an upgrade of a server machine with dual pentium 3 katmai at 500 mhz (using chipset L440GX+), and on that machine those kernel threads have never used ANY CPU AT ALL ! (and yes, it was under the same network load) but that machine was using a couple of Intel network cards, could the network cards be the reason ?
thanks for your help

Google Chrome CPU usage almost 100%
Hey guys,
so I recently updated from Snow Leopard directly to Mountain Lion and now I have a issue I can't fix by myself.
I'm using a Macbook Pro Mid 2010, 4gig Ram, 2,4 Intel Dualcore, GT 320M - now running OSX 10.8.3
I've got a 27" secondary display, where I usually enjoy my content Youtube e.g.. It used to work very fluently with no probs at all.
I could run a Skype conv., a Youtube vid, eyeTV and various apps simultaneously without any performance issues.
NOW: I have no other app running but Chrome, open up any random youtube-video and it starts to lag within seconds. When I switch to my 27" screen it shows a CPU usage of around 100% for Chrome and 80% for Pepperflashplayer, going down to 80%; 70% when displaying on my macbook screen.
I've read that RAM upgrade might be recommended for running Lion or ML on "older" macbooks. However during this lags and CPU peaks I still have around 1,5gig of free RAM. I've already installed 'Memory Clean' to monitor my RAM usage and keep it at a certain level.
This happens using Chrome: Pepperflashplayer + Chrome
Firefox: Shockwaveflash + Firefox
Safari: Flashplayer + Safari
always having almost full cpu usage and extreme graphic lags.
This does not happen when displaying HD content from my hard drive, eyetv and such.
Any suggestions?Hi,
Does this problem occur on another machine or only this
machine. if it is for only this machine, try to uninstall the Flash
player and install it again. -
MBP CPU usage at 90%?
I've got an MBP that I've had for a couple years now that just started acting up... What's weird is that this thing is the battle MB. It's been with me through 3 deployments and a tour in Iraq and hasn't given up yet. But, recently its been REALLY sluggish.
Hopefully someone out there can help me figure out what the problem is based on these symptoms:
Extremely sluggish... CPU usage is on average > 70% with no processes running
i.e. kernel_task is often using nearly all of the processing power
Takes about 30 minutes to start up and will often fail during boot up
The battery recently failed (exploded), so there is no battery installed
I have no access to parts or support because, as per usual, I am currently deployed... Anyone out there seen this before and can help me out?
Thanks.Welcome, Matthew!
"Extremely sluggish... CPU usage is on average > 70% with no processes running"
Activity Monitor defaults to display "My Processes." You can change its "Show" option--set it to "All Processes" and you will probably find the culprit that's hogging the processor. The typical hog belongs to the system, not your user account. It's usually an automated backup package (other than Time Machine) or unneeded anti-virus software.Symantic/Norton is very bad in this respect.
If you did had AM set to show all processes, let us know. Normally, nothing escapes AM's knowing eyes if "All processes" is selected.
"The battery recently failed (exploded), so there is no battery installed"
That drops the processor speed dramatically. Although the drop-back is not stated in Apple docs, smart people around here say it's to either 1Ghz or 1/2 rated speed, whichever is faster. Reference article here:

And thank you for your service to our country, sir. -
Oracle CPU usage on web application
I have a Dell desktop running Windows XP professional. (pentium 4, 2gb ram) This desktop is being used for a web app that does employee time cards. A contractor did this for the company and we are not proficient with Oracle, so we need some assistance!
The web application uses asp.net for the site and the database is oracle 11g.
So the various problems are:
1. The system will work flawlessly for a few days; once even a week! Lately, it has not been that good. There are four services related to oracle - two of them are sometimes having problems starting.. (status says "starting" then it will time out, then try to start again.) We have been rebooting the system multiple times just to get things working again so people can login.
services are as follows:
ORACLEDBConsole-timeentry - problems starting lately.
Oraclejobscheduler-timeentry - not currently set to start automatically
OracleoraDb11g_homeTNSlistener - usually starts fine
OracleServicetimeentry - have had problems starting sometimes, working good for now.
2. A few days ago I logged on to the machine and checked running processes. Oracle was consuming 100% cpu, and lots of memory. (~512mb) Also, there were many instances of TNSPing.exe running consuming resources as well.
3. Lately it doesn't work for over a day. We have to reboot every morning, and Oracle will not "crash" but does stay at 40-50% cpu usage. We think there is something going wrong with oracle services/oracle in general but have no idea where to look for a solution. There are no error messages or clues to what is going on!
Thanks in advance for your help!
-RyanThe excessive cpu usage in oracle is usually caused by code that does not use bind variables.
eg your sql string is passed as follows:
select * from customer where customer_number = '12345';
Your code should be passing:
select * from customer where customer_number = :BV1;
BV1 is a placeholder for a bind variable. Whatever language you use you need to associate a value with BV1. All the languages are capable of using bind variables, and once you know how, its easier than the usual :
'select * from customer where customer_number = '||customer_number;
If you're on oracle 8.1.7. then you can set the cursor_sharing parameter to force.
You will add this to your init.ora file and then restart the database.
I highly recommend you look at http://asktom.oracle.com as there is a wealth of useful information there, including how to determine whether your database is using bind variables.
Note: We run a web app server here with a database and 2 gb is easily sufficient. We are a development environment so dont get a lot of users. I have had the guys here recode there java code to use bind variables and we got a lot of performance improvement. -
Just got my new think pad yesterday, really excited about it. however, i've been noticing that my CPU usage is very unstable. it rarely stays under 10%, and is usually fluctuating between 15-40% even while idling. I haven't installed much, MSN, Steam, and Warhammer Online so far.. I'm not sure what to do, i've dissabled most applications to only start when i start them, not when windows starts. As i'm typing this my CPU is at around 20-30% Any help would be appreciated

Kernel CPU usage ad 250% on Idle MacBook Pro 13"
I recently (August 2011) purchased a MacBook Pro 13", 4 GB Ram, Intel i5, 320GB HDD. This is my first MAC and I was pretty excited.
However after using it for a few months one issue is constantly bothering me.
When I start up my MAC the fan starts making loud noises. This happens 75% of the time. AT first I thought that it would go away and went aboyt my work. Slowly I realized the the MAC was actually very slow and the fan noise never subsided. When it does the MAC works like a charm.
I checked the memory usage in the Activity Monitor and found it to be healthy. At this moment with a Browser (chrome) and Finder opened it has 2.6 GB of free memory. However the CPU usage is very surprising. Just one process, which is teh kernel task is hogging everything and is at 250% consistently. WHen it does come down (sometimes when I am lucky) the fan noise also subsides.
Has anyone faced this issue? Or am I just one of those unlucky people who got a bad MAC.
Any help/pointers etc appreciated. I dont want to be disappointed with my MAC experience.
ThanksPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/com\.apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Step 4
ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, steps 1-4 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
You can then quit Terminal. -
CPU Usage High, Individual Apps Not using Total
Hi everyone,
I've got a 2007 white Macbook currently running the most up to date version of Snow Leopard and recently the fan has been on a lot more often than it usually is and when I check in Acitivity Monitor the CPU usage is extremely high. Normally it's around 2-4% tops but several times over the last few months it's been at 50-60% sustained usage for a long time (upwards of 20 minutes, then I just reboot it). Once or twice it waws higher than 100%. I checked Activity Monitor and killed the normal culprits like Shockwave and Flash, then anything with Microsoft in the name. I'm a big tabbed browser user so I closed off google Chrome. Right now, running Adium, iCal, Powerpoint (small file size, only 5 slides), and Word, 45% of the CPU is currently in use. I went through and systematically closed everything but the CPU usage is still around 45% after closing all active programs in the dock other than Finder and Activity Monitor. The strange part for me is that the amount of CPU usage is not the sum of the CPU usage of all the programs currently running. It's not even close (like 1% versus 45%)
Does anyone know what might be wrong? Rebooting it will usually fix this problem, but I'm worried I either have Malware, a Trojan that iAntivirus isn't detecting, and my computer is somehow being used without my knowledge or something is wrong with my Mac.
Thanks in advance for any help!

The consistent gets are the cause of the high CPU usage. You might work through the links provided by Narendra to find the cause of the nested loop joins. Maybe this indicates a problem with the object statistics, or possibly it is caused by an unfortunate set of parameters that affected the optimizer's decisions.

I had a Aperture Library before and it converted to a Photos Library with 160GB including many of the original RAW formats. I got the library on an external USB3 SSD disk which is usually quite fast.
Now this conversion process is already finished, but when Photos is opened it constanly has a CPU usage above 100%, typically something between 150 and 300% CPU usage.
I also see the app is constantly reading and writing data. Has anyone an idea what it's doing? Couldn't be iCould sync as this is not activated for me.
And overall the app is pretty slow and not performing very wellI'm actually finding it pretty usable, but I have the exact same issue on my 2011 MacBook Pro (2.0Ghz). It's been running between 200%-600% CPU for the best part of two (business) days now and my library is smaller than yours (~ 17k images, ~100Gb).
I'm getting close to the point of giving up. Without any signs of progress it's difficult to tell whether it's doing anything useful (where's Apertures Activity pane when you need it?).

These don't look good on the surface... but who knows?! -
I've cleared cookies multiple times
I've emptied the cache
I cleared my download history, and a majority of my browsing history
I've tried having hardware acceleration for both flash and firefox on and off
I turned off all my apps and plugins and when that did nothing I turned back on the ones I need. I never had a lot of apps to begin with. only a max of 5. I had quite a few plugins, but i disabled all but quicktime, flash, and silverlight. I have those three set on "ask to activate" so none are "always active" anymore.
I also tried a couple things from the FAQ and forums here about changing a few settings in the "about:config" setup.
A few of the above things initially worked, but after a day or two it'd be back to sucking up my CPU and memory. I would then try the same thing again, and this second time there would be no improvement.
The real memory will fluctuate between 200 MB and 1.7 GB, and has done so for quite a while.
Even after I've left streaming sites, and sites with lots of images, and I'm not downloading anything, the memory and the CPU will still do that. I only have a handful of tabs open at a timeusually, and all of them are mostly text. I'll quit and reopen firefox, which will initially bring the memory and CPU usage down, but it inevitably climbs up quite quickly, regardless of my tab usage. It'll be the same if I'm playing a flash game or scrolling through blogs.
I never had any of these problems with Firefox 23, and my internet usage habits haven't changed at all. I had some of this slowness a few times with version 24, but nowhere near as bad as this, or as constant. Almost everyday I end up googling for other ways to speed things up. Everything I do never slowed down Firefox on earlier versions.
I've tried all my usual tasks on Safari which will never climb above 30-40 MB of memory, even on netflix streaming, or flash games, and the CPU will average around 8 and 11%.i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? Activity Monitor on Mac just shows the total used by the app. it's impossible in my case to efficiently disable dozens of add-ons & scripts, restart, and test each one by one b/c it can take several hrs before the CPU starts to spike high again. i have no time for this.
thanks -
Problem with paintComponent, and CPU usage
Hi,
I had the weirdest problem when one of my JDialogs would open. Inside the JDialog, I have a JPanel, with this paintComponent method:
public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
super.paintComponent(g);
Color old = g.getColor();
g.setColor(Color.BLACK);
g.drawString("TEXT", 150, 15);
g.setColor(old);
parent.repaint();
now when this method is called, the CPU usage would be at about 99%. If i took out the line:
parent.repaint();
the CPU usage would drop to normal. parent is just a reference to the Jdialog that this panel lies in.
Anyone have any ideas on why this occurs?
Thanks!1) I never got a stack overflow, and i have had this in my code for quite sometime...If you called paint() or paintComponent(), I'm betting that you would see a stack overflow. The way I understand it, since you are calling repaint(), all you are doing is notifying the repaint manager that the component needs to be repainted at the next available time, not calling a paint method directly. good article on how painting is done : http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/painting/index.html#mgr
2) If this is the case, and the two keep asking eachother to paint over and over, .....

Unable to detect updates, 100% CPU usage by wuauserv
Lawrence,
Below is the log you requested. This was taken after renaming the SoftwareDistribution directory. The user reported CPU usage went back up to 100% at around 14:00 after which we killed the service. This is too long for one post, so I'm breaking it in two.
