MBA Vista

Hi there,
I am looking to buy an OEM copy of vista to put on my MBA, can anyone tell me if i buy the 64bit or 32bit version.
Many thanks.

If you will be using Boot Camp, buy the 32-bit version only, as the Boot Camp drivers only support 32-bit Windows.
If you will be using Parallels or Fusion, consult their respective websites for compatibility information.

  • Using VMWare Fusion and Vista for NetFlix Watch Now

Hi, I have installed Fusion and Vista in order to use NetFlix's Watch Now feature on my MBA. The installation was easy and Vista seems to be working fine. However, I can't get the Watch Now movie going. The film will start (after NetFlix determines my internet speed, etc.) and alternate between play and pause. Has anyone used this combination with success? Would a downgrade to XP work better? Or I should just use Boot Camp? Thanks.

I've used WinXP with Fusion on a MacMini and it was fine (but faster in BootCamp). I'm currently running Vista Business on a MacBook Pro in Parallels and while it isn't slow, it certainly is slower than in BootCamp. I expect Fusion would run Vista a bit faster - Fusion does tend to be a bit faster than Parallels but Parallels seems to get along better than Fusion with one of the applications I'm using.
There are advantages to BootCamp and BC isn't incompatible with virtualization. I suggest that you go ahead and install Vista in BootCamp. If you haven't already bought Fusion, download the demo and see how it runs using the BootCamp installation and compare that to BootCamp itself. Then decide.

  • Time Machine backup on MBA 13" drop connection after a while

    Nov 2010 MBA 13", OS X 10.6.7 (latest)
2008 Time Capsule, Firmware 7.5.2 (latest)
Since a while ago, possibly 10.6.7 patch, my MBA has had problems maintaining a wireless connection both to my TC and to an Airport Express that I have, especially when left unattended for 10' or so. My Iphone 4 and a Vista PC on the same network never had a similar problem.
Genius Bar folks ran hardware tests which showed nothing, then suggested a clean install and app migration (without network settings) which I did. For a day or so my MBA then starting to behave well.
Since yesterday, when I reinstalled 10.6.7, my MBA doesn't drop the connection, but has another problem. It won't finish its wireless Time Machine backup (3.6GB). Sometimes it can't find the TC disk, others it can. Then it goes ok for a while, even sometimes 2/3 of the way and then drops the internet connection and the connection to TC, but the Airport binding to the TC still shows as active on the MBA menubar. If I turn the Airport interface off and back on again on the MBA, eventually after a while it might find the wireless network again.
The only other internet-related app running in the background is Skype 5.1.0.914 (latest). Also, TC network channel is not shared with any other wireless close by.
I strongly believe this is a problem with the latest OS X patch (10.6.7) and MBA/TC combination. Even while it backups ok, it seems that the backup speed is low, which points to some conflict.
Do other people have the same or a similar issue?  Can Apple Support chime in, since Genius Bar suggestion didn't do much for me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Update:
Stopping Skype allows backups to run faster and complete normally. In fact Time Machine has never been that fast for me..
Seems the problem is gone, hopefully this might also help others.

  • Connecting MBA to our small business server 2003

    Hi guys,
I just got a new 13inch MBA. I would like to use this at work for my exchange server email etc.
How do I put the MBA onto our .local domain and we use a VPN for remote connectivity?
This is my first MacBook so I'm finding my feet with the whole macbok and how it works.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

I have specific errors listed below:
Actually, I have been encountering similar problems.  I have an end user who wants to connect to an SBS 2003 server, and can not connect/use RWW because the Active X will not work, cannot use the VPN in PPTP mode because Windows 8 disallows the connection
("Error 942: The connection could not be established because the authentication method used by your connection profile is not permitted for use by an access policy configured on the RAS/VPN server."), and cannot use an L2TP VPN connection because it requires
a certificate "Error 766: A certificate could not be found. Connections that use the L2TP protocol over IPSEC require the installation of a machine certificate, also known as a computer certificate.".  I attempted to utilize the SBS Connection Tool downloaded
from RWW, but it fails with a proxy error ("Unable to execute custom script (Configure proxy settings for IE). Required file could be missing." - likely due to the PPTP tunnel it tries to use). I went so far as to install the Enterprise CA on the server, installed
    the Hotfix
(KB922706) so that the website could be accessed from Vista and above, and installed the requested certificate.  The VPN fails to connect after
it times out and fails to negotiate a connection.  This last one is "Error 789: L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer
encountered a processing error during the initial negotiations with the remote computer."
I have screenshots to share if anyone cares to see.  I really just get the feeling that Microsoft is trying to kill SBS 2003 by ingoring it into oblivion.
The VPN works fine with Windows 7 clients by the way.

  • Can't get newest MBA to work with DVI KVM

I have the Belkin F1DD10XL DVI kvm switch with the new MBA 13" with OS 10.9
I can't get the KVM to show the mac screen.
I have a mini display port to hdmi adaptor that is connected to the mac.
The adaptor is connected to the kvm using a hdmi to dvi cable.
I know the adaptor and cables are OK because when I connected them directly to the DVI input of the screen and it works.
But when I connect them to the kvm I can't see the screen.
Maybe I need to force the mac to output its screen through the mini display port so the kvm will recognize it?
    or maybe something diffrent?

Please review the "stickied" threads near the top of this board, about syncing with Windows 7 and Vista.  It's all there.
After you've been through and tried everything there is to try, and still have problems, please post back with specific info about exactly what you've tried, what version of Windows 7 you have (32-bit or 64-bit), etc.

  • MBA Gen2 and 20" external cinema + 10.5.6 same problem as 23"

I just started hooking up an Apple 20" cinema display to the 2nd Gen MBA and it appears if you allow the display to "sleep" then on wake there is the same tearing and snow issue that was reported in other threads with the larger displays that seems to be "fixed" in 10.5.6.
Anyone else seen this? Resolution is the same: put MBA to sleep and wake, or disconnect and reconnect the monitor.

Finally! I figured it out using this tutorial. Even though it's for VISTA my WinXP computer's My Documents folder was already setup to share. I'm still unable to figure out how to connect the old way from the PC but I actually find this to be just as good.
    http://www.ifelix.net/tech/3022.html
Before, when running 10.4.11, I would use the PC to connect to my Mac's Public Folder using Add Network Place and the Mac's TCP/IP address.
Now, running 10.5.6, I'm able to connect to the PC by using the PC's smb://(PC TCP/IP address here) path from the Finder/Go/Connect to Server menu.
This connects to My Documents folder on the PC running WinXP. I doesn't work the other way around going from the PC to the Mac.

  • MBA Boot Camp Thundervolt VGA adaptor

I have a problem connecting my MBA(11inch Mid 2011) to several Projectors in Boot Camp Windows 7 by using Thunderbolt - VGA adaptor.
Where can I get correct driver update?

I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect to the switch in our conference room (connecting both a flat panel display and/or a projector, both with much higher native resolutions), all I get is 640x480. This is a huge problem to using bootcamp, and I really need to get this to work. I was able to get a higher resolution 1280x800 on a separate, portable display, so I'm wondering if people have the problem with standalone projectors or only with projectors connected to some sort of switch, in my case an Extron MPX423A. I have also tried this in both Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 RC1 (32-bit), with the bootcamp drivers and the latest NVidia drivers, and the behavior is the same all around.

  • Run XP / Vista from a USB flash memory on my Macbook Air

    Hello!
Does anyone know if it is possible to boot and run XP directly from a USB stick?
I am fairly new to Mac. So far I like it a lot however, due to my job I need to run some things in XP or Vista. Instead of "polluting" my new Macbook Air with a partition with XP I thought it would be neat to run XP from a USB stick. They are cheap and quite large nowadays but I really have no clue if it is doable technically. It might be too slow or there might be other issues that I don't know of.
Can anyone shed some light or point in the right direction.
All help will be highly appreciated.
    A

I would guess that performance wouldn't be so good trying to run XP from an external hard drive, but I haven't tried it nor do I know if it is possible. I'm in the same boat with needing to run some XP programs.
I've been using VMware Fusion and it works well. However, the MBA runs hot and battery life suffers when just running VMware without much going on in the XP machine. You can probably put the XP VM on a usb key and have VMware run it from there. As for the software running in a VM rather than native, the programs run and the speed is tolerable but I don't mistake it for my ThinkPad. Depending on how much resources your software needs, the MBA may not be a good fit.

  • Which version of winodws works best with MBA? ahich software I should use?

I used to be a mac user until i started college, long story short got a MBA and love it to death but i still need to install windows in order for my work use, i need your advice on which windows version i should get? the home basic, premium or ultimate? and from reading the post here i see that there is another way to install windows on mba by using VMware, should i use VMware or boot camp to install my windows and any suggestions about what should i do and not do while installing? Thank you so much! mac rules!

Some advice depends on how much money you have available. As a college student I would think the budget is a little tight.
I would load Windows XP Home edition, not Vista. The subject of VMware is $ vs convenience. You can load XP under bootcamp for free, but you have to reboot between OSX and Windows sessions. Under VMware you can run both at the same time and switch between them at will, however it'll cost you $60-$80 for the privlige.
It's much easier to install Windows and VMware if you bought the external Superdrive, however watch out for the "gotcha" that I posted in another thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1378410&tstart=0
I use VMware and Windows XP, it's the best of both worlds although I would prefer to drop my windows use all together.
It's really nice to use SPACES and assign VMware/windows to space 2 and OSX tasks to space 1 and then switch back and forth.
    Hope this helps, CaptFred

  • Vista via remote disk

    hi,
after trying and trying , i finally gave up and realised that one may not install vista via remote disk
so i created a .iso of the vista install disk . And over my networked, transfered it over to my MBA desktop.
yet bootcamp wont reconized or install vista...
is there any way i can use some type of vertual drive and trick bootcamp ?
or do i NEED to buy the super drive ?

Apple support official answer is here: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307310>
+MacBook Air requires a USB optical drive for the installation of Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) or Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit versions only). The Remote Disc sharing software included with the MacBook Air cannot be used to install Microsoft Windows. Be sure to connect your external USB optical drive to your MacBook Air before starting the Boot Camp Assistant.+

  • Airport time capsule (spring 2014-2TB)  hard drive is spinning but the LED is off and it will not connect to my MBA (mid 2013)

My airport time capsule 2TB accidentally got unplugged from the awl while in use. now you can hear and feel internal hard drive of my 2 TB spinning but all LED's won't turn on.  it will not connect to my 2013 MBA or be recognized my my iPhone 5 etc. when i plug it in airport utility senses something but will not connect. please help! my entire life is on this thing.
    trouble shooting thus far:
    unplugged APTC 2TB & MBA
    reset MBA
currently unplugged the Airport time capsule hoping to cool it off? ...

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • MBA connection and restore problems

Right, so basically my MBA seems to drop the connection every 3 minutes or so. Well, not drop it, it remains connected, but it just stops transmitting data. Its really strange. Regardless of if im using mobile BB or if im using the wireless, it just stops transmitting data. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Im fairly sure its not hardware as it does the same if I use mobile BB and its not signal, as my Mobile BB has full signal and my wireless is wireless N.
So I thought it could be hardware, so I tried to restore it OTA, but when I select the restore disk in my imac (From my MBA) the World appears and spins, and then the machine has a kernal panic, so I managed to get hold of an external disk drive, and when i try to do it from there I just get a blue screen for 10 minutes, and then it starts up as normal,
This coupled with the connection problem is really doing my head in. All i want to do is for the bloody thing to stop dropping a connection so I can actually use it!
Anyone got any ideas how to get round my problems without having to send it to apple or buy extra pieces just to restore it?

    Elk;
    Thanks for the quick response. Here's what I've got;
Belkin 54g Router. Yes, the firmware is current, the other computers I've got connected are two Toshiba Satellites, and my son's MacBook Pro, no problems with any of them. The Toshiba's are running Windows Vista and Windows 7RC1 and the MacBook pro runs OSX 10.4.? No encryption and anywhere else I take the MBA I have the same issues.
History; Originally the MBA ran OSX 10.4 when received, updated to 10.5.6 I believe and that's when the problems began. Currently it has an 80G HD, 2 GB of ram, and 58GB of free space available.
I've tried everything I know, and a few things I've made up (ha) and while I'm the IT guy at work, 98% of my training and experience is Windows based so learning OSX has been fairly easy, with the exception of the wireless issue.
I'm open to about anything to sort out what the problem is, but from what I've read here, there are quite a few people with OSX 10.5 and better having the same issues. I'm simply hoping someone has sorted this out.
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
