MBA3,1 11" powers down instead of sleep when connected to iphone

When not connected to a power supply and charging/syncing with my iPhone4, it will turn off rather than go to sleep.  This is true whether closing lid or just passing time.  It even extended to times when I had nothing attached.  I updated OS to 10.6.8 and problem stopped, until today.  Any idea why?  Fixes?  I may update to Lion, but wondering if this is a hardware issue I should bring it in for.

A little extra investigation and someone else's post about USB problems led me to the conclusion.  Bad USB data cable.  Swapped it out for another and poof! Problem solved.  Time to bring it in and get it swapped out under AppleCare.  Feel kinda stupid posting and then realizing the problem.  But maybe someone else will find it useful.

  • MacBook pro shuts down instead of sleeping while connected to power adapter

    Hi there,
I am currently facing a rather strange issue. My old MacBook pro (about 2 years old) shuts down instead of sleeping but only when it is connected to the power adapter. I mean it goes to sleep mode perfectly well when it works only with the battery. Is it a know issue ? I'm running 10.5.6 and this problem is quite new to me (happened the first time some weeks ago).
Thank you in advance for your answer.

You might try resetting the SMC and see if this helps:

  • MacBook shuts down instead of sleeping when battery low

Like many people, I had the infamous MacBook sudden shutdown problem where my MacBook (original model) would suddenly shut down wihtout warning regardless of if it was running off battery or AC adapter. I took the MacBook into the Apple store, they did their magic, and two weeks later an updated MacBook was shipped to me, free of the problem. I also applied the firmware update when it came out.
Now I have a new problem...it's that the MacBook doesn't seem to want to sleep when the battery gets low. Instead, it will suddenly shut down without warning. In the past, I seem to recall that it would give alerts saying that my power was low, and eventually force itself to sleep. However, now the battery can be as high as 15-20% and the MacBook will shut down. This never happens when the battery is not on the low side, so I'm wondering if this is a problem with the MacBook guaging how much power it has left. Sometimes, I notice that when I plug it in and reboot, the battery says it is at 0%, even though it clearly was not prior to the shutdown (though that didn't happen just now when it shut down - when I rebooted after connecting the AC adapter, it was at 15%).
I tried resettting the SMC firmware, which seems to help transietly, but the problem recurs. 90% of the time I use my computer plugged in, so that's why I've not noticed it much

The same thing happened to me last night -- the Macbook shut down because of low battery instead of sleeping, and it gave no warning messages at all as the battery power got low.
I never had the sudden shutdown problems, though.
I also checked the battery capacity with CoconutBattery, and it reported that the Max Battery Capacity was 4105 mAh, which is only 78% of the battery's original max capacity. Today, CoconutBattery reports that the battery's max capacity is 5035 mAh (96% of original capacity), which is more reasonable for a laptop less than a year old.
Perhaps resetting PRAM or the Power Management Unit could solve this problem.
Any experts out there with a solution?

  • My computer shuts down instead of sleeps when battery drains...

    Hi there!
So, I just got a new MacBook Pro (the better 15" one) in June. I've noticed, however, that when my battery drains, and the little warning comes up that says "your computer will go to sleep in a few minutes to preserve data," if I let it run all the way out, it doesn't go to sleep but just shuts down. When I reopen my computer after plugging it in, all my stuff is back, but I do have to press the power button and start it up again.
My old computer (White MacBook 2006) always actually went to sleep, and only if I let it sleep for a long time did it shut off.
Have they changed the behavior? Do the laptops only shut down, and no longer sleep when the battery is gone? Or is something wrong with my computer. I'm getting all my data back, and all the windows and stuff are still open, so that's not a problem for me, but if my computer is working incorrectly only three months after buying it, then I'd like to know...
Thanks! Let me know what further information you need to help!

Your computer is not shutting down — it's hibernating, also called "safe sleep". This is indicated by the fact that everything you were working on is undisturbed when you wake it by pressing the power button.
The contents of RAM are written to the hard drive before the machine enters safe sleep, so that if the battery drains completely before you wake it, the contents of RAM (including your unsaved work) won't be completely lost. This is different from ordinary sleep, in which the machine simply suspends all activity without writing anything to disk. If the machine went into ordinary sleep after giving you a low-battery warning and not getting any cooperation from you (i.e. you didn't heed the warning and plug in AC power), and then you didn't wake it for twelve or fifteen hours, the battery might have gone completely dead and your unsaved work would be lost.
In short, yes, this is new behavior compared to several years ago, and from what you tell us, your machine is working exactly as it's supposed to.

  • Imac/Lion power down instead of sleep

My new iMac powers down after sleeping. 2 Hours of sleuthing with Applecare is unable to find the problem. There have been no power outages, the energy saver has no scheduled power cycling, we've reset the parameter RAM, and many other checks and tests.
It behaved most of yesterday after I removed the wireless keyboard from the room. But, in the middle of the night,
I found it powered off again.
This morning, it was powering down (instead of sleeping) again about half the time. I let it sleep by energy saver timeout, not the power button.
Then I switched to a different user (only used for remote sharing). All day today, sleep has worked with no power downs - about 10 hrs so far.
Have any of you experienced any misbehavior like this? How did you stop the power downs? Clues?
    Thanks, Tony

I havent' connected them because I suspect that the old monitor was causing the problem. I plug in the hard drives only as I need them but don't leave them on. It's only been four days now but I haven't had the powering off issue since I unplugged everything. I may buy a new second monitor as the one I was using was from  an old Mac Quicksilver Tower and needed a specialized adapter to work.I seem to remeber there is also a setting somewhere in prefernces that allows you to use the power button to put the iMac to sleep. I think i also uchecked that option in addition to unplugging everything.
    Good Luck!

After install of OS 10.5.8 my iMac G5 - 2005 model, no Intel processor - whenever I choose sleep from the Apple menu or the time-out goes to sleep mode the computer shuts down instead of sleeping. Any insight would be appreciated.

Try using Disk Utility t repair your disk
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair permissions from your internal drive.

  • Why is my computer shutting down instead of sleeping?

My comptuer is shutting down instead of sleeping. I have looked at my preferences a million times and nothing has changed regarding my sleep time or any other options.
I looked at another forum answer and tried resetting the SMU by unplugging the cord and holding the power button. That did not solve my problem. What should my next steps be? Should I reset PRAM? Should I suck it up and deal and bring it into a store? I am covered until October.
    Please help. Thanks!

  • Shuts down instead of sleep

I have tried everything!  I have even restored to factory settings and the problem still exists.  Instead of going to sleep my computer shuts down.  I have checked power options and they look fine however when I change anything in the options it still shuts down instead of sleeps.  I am thinking this must be a windows update issue but don't know which one.  I have tried everything on every forum I found but no luck.  Please help!
    TIA

later in November. Ever since then I've had the same problem and have tried
different things to circumvent it. It certainly appears to me that the
Lenovo has a severe bug in wakening from hibernate in 8.1 that was not
there in 8.0. And they should fix it. I'm about ready to throw the darn
thing out. Most of the time it doesn't come back from hibernate, you can
hear the fan run when you open the lid but it does not come up. other times
it does nothing until you press and hold down power. I thought HP was bad.

  • Macbook shuts down instead of sleeps

I have a 2ghz core duo macbook (modle No. A1181 (EMC 2092)) that I recently restored from a time machine backup. It was at 10.5.5 and now its at 10.6.8. So, right now I close the lid of the macbook and immediatly shuts down instead of sleeping. The previous macbook (the one I made the back up from) didn't have this problem and nor did this one before the upgrade. I have already tried resetting the smc and the pram. Anyone have any ideas?

Having never shutdown my laptop, I was guessing on its reaction to closing the lid. So, I shutdown my MBP and closed the lid. It did continue the shutdown, so there seems to be a problem with yours.

Does your PC have software for a Logitech QuickCam/Webcam, Lexmark scanners, or a built-in media card reader?
If it does try uninstalling the software from Control Panel, then testing and downloading the latest software/drivers available, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502

  • Alu 12" Powerbook G4, shuts down instead of sleeps

Hey all, recently (the last few days), my powerbook, instead of going to sleep when the battery juice runs out, is shutting down hard (as if you were holding down the power button) when the battery is down in reserve power. It's happening when the battery clock says there are 4-6 minutes left on the battery. When I plug it in and turn it back on, the computer clock has been reset. This has happened 4 times in the last week. Should I try a PMU reset? Is the battery crapping out?
    Thanks!

After doing all the resets (PRAM/VRAM and PMU) and doing a battery calibration, still nothing worked. I'm guessing the life of the battery has been reached. Mine is roughly 3 years old with about 400 cycles on it. That seems to be about the expected life. However, what I have found strange is the abrupt nature in the battery decay. I was getting a good 3 hours from this battery until about a month ago, and then I began to lose roughly 10% capacity a day.
I've installed NewerTech's NuPower battery replacement, and all seems to be well so far. I've had it running for about 2 weeks now with no problems and about 3-4 hours of battery life. Hopefully I will get a couple years out of this before I see any battery craziness again. I will post back if anything goes awry.

  • My Power Mac G4 shut down instead of sleeping

Is there anyone out there having this problem..?
When I put my PM to sleep it shut down instead. If I try to restart it right away it starts booting but fails after a couple of seconds and shut down again. If I wait for a longer while it starts like it should!?
I have tried to replace the backup battery with no luck.
Power Mac G4 "Quicksilver"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi! - I had a similar problem with my G4 which I bought second hand. It would sleep and then when I tried to awaken it - it would then shut down. Long story short - it had a third party Airport card which I removed as I did not need it - problem solved! Seemingly third party bits and pieces can sometimes cause this problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac shuts down instead of sleeping

Hi everybody. Forum newbie here. I'm having a bit of trouble with my iMac. First of all, it's a G5 with 2.0 GB of facory installed RAM, and running OSX 10.4. I bought it barely used from a friend and when I first got it in the spring it shut down instead of going to sleep a couple of times. It wasn't a big deal, since it was overnight and not in use at the time. From then on it was fine. Over the past few days however, it has started doing this again, and much more aggressively.
It seems that it doesn't go to sleep at all anymore. It just shuts down. If you put it to sleep it will shut down. If it goes to sleep on its own, it shuts down. I went into the preferences panel and set it so it never goes to sleep and the monitor shuts down after 2 hours. I left it and went back to it after about 20 minutes and it had shut down. This happened repeatedly last night, causing me to waste 6 or 7 DVD-R, as I was attempting to burn one and it would shut down during the burning process. I had a pretty bad case of computer-induced Tourrette's syndrome I've gotta say.
As long as it's in use, there's no problem, but if you leave it alone for any length of time over say 20 minutes it seems that it's going to shut down regardless of your energy saving settings. And it doesn't seem to sleep at all anymore.
I do lots of video work and between burning DVDs and rendering video, I frequently need to leave the computer alone and let it do its thing. If it's going to shut down every time I leave it alone, then that makes my work impossible, or at least extremely annoying as I will have to run back and forth every 10 minutes to jiggle the mouse to make sure it doesn't go to sleep.
Anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it? Thanks so much!

Welcome to Discussions. Which model do you have? If it's a Rev A (not ambient light and no iSight), then you might qualify for the Repair Extension Program. In any case, try and reset your PMU/SMU. PLease post back,
