MBP 10.5.8 hanging when run setup as if a new machine

MBP 10.5.8
For a number of weeks my MacBook has been hanging and needing a hard restart and at other times taking longer and longer to boot up.
Finally it gave me a password prompt but not for my usual account and it wouldn't accept my password.
So in command line I went to ls /Users/ got the username of my account and tried to change the password in command line using:
   Launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectory.plist
   Passwd <username>
And the system said the username was not recognised even though what I typed was the one that showed when I ran ls /Users/
I did this several times with the same thing happening each time
Then I tried to create a new admin account by deleting var/db AppleSetUpDone
when I reboot it runs the setup program as if it were a new mac - I tried setting it up with the details of my wireless connection; it ran overnight without finishing
I then tried setting it up saying I do not connect to the Internet - same thing, it ran overnight without finishing
When I run fsck -fy in command line it says everything is fine
I know this machine is old and on its last legs and I would really appreciate any help getting it going for a little bit longer.
Thanks very much

We have a mbp bootable clone with 10.5.8 and want to use this as a backup startup disk on a mba with 10.6.8.  We understand that it is generally not possible to startup a bootable clone that has a different os than what you are currently running.
You should as long as the MP had booted off the 10.5.8 clone previously.
However I, and others also, found out that we can no longer boot off the 10.5 disks in a later 10.6+ Software Update, it might be the firmware was changed to disallow 10.5 from booting once on 10.6.+ sometime.
Apple might have done this because they don't want people using the 10.5 disk to repair their 10.6 altered drive.
Got the written kp hard boot screen and had to unplug the clone while frozen but there appears to be no permanent damage to any of the drives.  We suspected this may happen.
There is your answer and no, no pernament damage was done, it's all a read operation and the machine/firmware couldn't use the 10.5.8 drivers.
You'll have to find a Mac that is of the same model and runs 10.5 to boot off that 10.5.8 clone.

No answers, but some more questions:
Before diving into the JNI stack trace, what does "hang" mean? Are there other threads running in your program? Is this the main thread?
Looking at the stack -- and Googling libhpi.so didn't turn up much for me, other than similar complaints -- it looks like it's an output routine. What are you writing to? A local disk, or one that's remote mounted?
Edit: absolute speculation here, but I suspect that it's a routine that's called when an in-memory buffer's full, in order to physically write the data onto whatever medium you're writing too. So probably not worth looking for an actual "buffer overflow" that's damaging memory.

  • FYI: New version of Disk Warrior seems to hang when run with Snow Leopard

FYI: It seems that the new version of Disk Warrior hangs when run in Snow Leopard

I have been using DW 4.2 on 10.5.8 and the speed-up was the first thing I noted, too, so it isn't just SL.
Now if it would only 'come up for air' and respond to input to move window (so I can put it where I can see it if needed) I'd like that.
There is a 23 page review of Snow Leopard on Ars. On page 22:
People sometimes ask what, exactly, is wrong with HFS+.
Aside from its obvious lack of the features just listed, HFS+ is limited in many ways by its dated design, which is based on HFS, *a twenty-five year-old file system.*
To give just one example, the centrally located Catalog File, which must be updated for each change to the file system's structure, is a frequent and inevitable source of contention. Modern file systems usually spread their metadata around, both for robustness (multiple copies are often kept in separate locations on the disk) and to allow for better concurrency.
Practically speaking, think about those times when you run Disk Utility on an HFS+ volume and it finds (and hopefully repairs) a bunch of errors. *That's bad, okay?* +*That's something that should not happen*+ with a modern, thoroughly checksummed, always-consistent-on-disk file system unless there are hardware problems (and a ZFS storage pool can actually deal with that as well). And yet it happens all the time with HFS+ disks in Mac OS X when various bits of metadata to get corrupted or become out of date.
Apple gets by year after year, tacking new features onto HFS+ with duct tape and a prayer, but at a certain point there simply has to be a successor—whether it's ZFS, a home-grown Apple file system, or something else entirely. My fingers are crossed for Mac OS X 10.7.
If Disk Utility was reliable in mapping out weak sectors (it is not) and report/log errors. But it doesn't and I trust my data to other file systems when possible. We've come to expect and depend on 3rd party utilities and that Apple First Aid doesn't fix every possible error.
Scanning one drive for errors can take a long time. Maybe it needs to be done, maybe in the background. With 2TB drives it gets worse. Spending hours to scan for errors??? I've set TechTool Pro to concurrently scan anywhere from one to a dozen volumes at once.
An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure.

  • Sudo command hangs when run as winbind user

    Hi,
    It even hangs when running:
    $ sudo
    or
    $sudo -V
So nothing to do with my sudo config - have reverted /etc/sudoers back to default. Even control-c does not work and the process needs to be killed as root, using another session.
The command works fine when ran as a local user. It is only when running as a winbind user that there's a problem.
Any help on what tools can be used to find out what's happening while the command is hanging would be much appreciated. Or even better any ideas on how to stop it hanging would be even better!
Can provide any config files if they help anyone.......
    Many Thanks,
    Richard

    *** UPDATE ***
It seems the version of sudo (v1.8*) supplied with Solaris 11 is not compatible with Winbind users.
    Workaround:
Compile version 1.7* to /usr/local/bin and add this to the beginning of $PATH

  • Macbook Pro 2008 hangs when running video on nvidia 9400M

My MBP (2.4GHz unibody) freezes whenever I run youtube videos for a few minutes. Resetting the PRAM and SMC didn't solve the problem. It seems to happen more often when running on batteries rather than plugged in.
This MBP model has two graphic cards integrated. By default it runs on the nvidia 9400m. I haven't had the problem since switching over to the 9600M (crossing fingers) although the laptop does run a lot hotter now and I really don't need the extra graphics boost given by the 9600M.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I don't know if it makes any difference but I purchased the computer from a reseller with extra RAM (4GB total). It has all the latest updates and minimum extra software (it's brand new).

Try downloading this video to see if it plays properly.
    http://www.apple.com/macbook/the-new-macbook/
If the video that you have downloaded plays properly, then I would think that the issue is related to your Internet service.
If the video that you have downloaded plays poorly, then I would contact Apple to try to have it exchanged or serviced.
    PS:
Does the video hang when you watch the live stream at the following URL? You may need Adobe Flash player to view this site.

  • 11.1.1.3 DRM Blender hangs when run from batch

We are with some frequency seeing hangs when we run a batch blender of our account hierarchy into our working version.  When this happens logging into the client seems to hang up everything without much possibility of doign any work.
Has anyone experienced this?  The account hierarchy has some 26,000 nodes and some 10 properties at each node.
Does anyone have experience handling DRM crash/hang problems with a best practice or troubleshooting tips?  I imagined we might be seeing some sort of locking situation after an http timeout but I am not seeing any meaningful information in any logs, so I appreciate any basic troubleshooting tips.
    Agnete

    Hi Agnete,
I think I'd suggest logging a service request so that someone in support can have a bit of a dig into this for you and provide the following:
    1. An unfiltered application event log from the primary DRM application server in evt / evtx format (to give us full stack traces and some context).
    2. A specific example (rough time when blend was run) of when a blender was run that hung the system so that we can try to isolate what was going on at that particular time
I think that any other approach is probably just going to be guess work until we can see what's actually been going on at the time of the problem. Seeing as the log from the batch client is empty in your case that just leaves the Windows application event log where we can look for clues.
If we can see what is happening from the event log that should hopefully let us give you some pointers to get past the issue. At this point I'd suspect that something could be really upsetting a DRM engine process but until we can have a dig in the event log even that's just pure speculation

  • Error when running setup table for 2LIS_03_UM

    Hi experts,
When running the setup table for 2LIS_03_UM, we got the error message "Plant FP01 does not exist." Any suggestions on how we can fix this?
    Thanks,
    Donna

check if this plant has been maintained in source system or not. If not, ask the concerned team to maintain it.
Another way may be to allow error records which should ignore errornous records and rest should be filled in setup table.

It may be due to low number of implicit cursors which the system opens during run time.
You can try opening the file 'initorcl.ora' in notepad and add a line at the end of the file, if not there,
    OPEN_CURSORS = 900
    and save it.
restart the system, check your report.
It is just by experience, try out your luck.

  • Classic JVM hangs when running Tomcat as Windows Service

    Hi!
I am running a Tomcat 3.2.4 application, written with Java 1.3.1_01.
To run it as a Windows Service (W2000), I am using a slightly altered version of JavaService, which works fine so far: I can use both the "hotspot" and the "server" JVM's (by selecting the jvm.dll from the respective subfolder of the JDK/jre/bin folder).
However, when I try to run the same application with the "classic" JVM, the service starts, inside of it Tomcat starts, the first output appears (to the stdout logfile) and after some time Tomcat simply hangs - it doesn't respond to anything anymore, 0% CPU, no output to logfiles anymore, doesn't even respond to normal Tomcat shutdown (e.g. when stopping the service, Windows waits the standard timeout then just kills it).
Using the classic JVM in a console (e.g. not through JavaService and the classic/jvm.dll) works fine! No problems!
Anyone here who can offer any help on this?
Any hints why Tomcat may behave correctly in 5 out of six possible configurations (hotspot-server/client as service or console or classic as console) but hanging with 1 configuration (classic as service)?
Also, on my W2000 box where this happens, the moment Tomcat hangs, I hear a Windows warning sound being played (the standard warning gong), like it happens when an info dialog pops up - only there is no dialog or whatever and the same moment Tomcat's CPU usage drops to 0% (although the app is still in startup and should do some more work for a few seconds).
This also doesn't always happen at the same moment during startup, but each time at a different moment, e.g. I can not pin it down to something that is done during startup, it just happens a short while (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) after startup...
Of course, I could simply say "forget classic, it's being phased out anyway", only: The SAME thing happens with IBM's Java 1.3 VM too (except for the gong sound, which seems to be Sun-JVM specific ;-)! And I would very much like my app to be able to run on IBM's VM (usually I'm using Sun's VMs everywhere, but we have a few stray W2000 boxes with SP2 where Sun's 1.3.1_0x VMs crash with our application [not hang like described above, but really crash, even when run as a console]) and on those boxes the IBM JVM in a console works fine - now I only have to get it working as a service too (and while researching why it hangs I saw that Sun's classic JVM hangs too, so I figured, I first find out why that happens, with the hope that the fix is applicable to IBM's JVM too...).
    Thanks already,
    Johannes

re setting classpath when using JavaService
    for Win2k, Tomcat 3.3.1a, JDK1.2
below is my script for creating/installing JavaService
(based on Alexandria web site version). However, if i
try to add .jar files to classpath (ie, CP environment
variable), the service does not work. It only works
when this single .jar file is there. How can .jar or
.zip files be added to classpath for this service?
I've not been working with Tomcar as a service, so can't help directly, but can offer some comments that might be of use (apologies if they aren't!).
There are Tomcat scripts for V3.1, V3.2 and V4 with the JavaService code from Alexandria SC. Looks like you need one for V3.3 as well?
In these others, there are fairly long lists of jar files in the classpath, so I would expect it to work correctly for the version you are using (unless there is a problem with the way that classloaders are involved, which is something that is known to get in the way for some app server-based programs).
I would expect the classpath to work if changed from what you have listed to something like the following:
    set CP=%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\tomcat.jar;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\jaxp.jar;%TOMCAT_HOME$\lib\other_library.jar
Is that what you have tried to do, and found problems?
Does this version of Tomcat bundle all of its resources into a single jar file (tomcat.jar), or is that a file you have created yourself?
Is the problem found when loading and starting Tomcat itself, or from within your server-based application?
Does it fail to load a 'standard' Tomcat library archive, or a jar file containing your own program code?
    set CP=%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\tomcat.jar
    echo %CP%
    JavaService.exe -install "Jakarta-Tomcat"
    %java_home%\jre\bin\classic\jvm.dll
    -Djava.class.path=%CP% -Dtomcat.home=%TOMCAT_HOME%
    -Djava.security.policy=%TOMCAT_HOME%/conf/tomcat.policy

  • "Unable to set shared config DC." when running setup /RecoverServer

    Hi guys,
I'm hoping for a bit of assistance. I have stepped into an environment where there is one production Exchange 2010 server and one Exchange 2013 server. The Exchange 2013 server is in a unrecoverable state however it contains the domain administrators mailbox

/IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms. Everything runs through successfully until it gets to the Mailbox role: Transport service where it fails with "Unable to set shared config DC.". After some searching on Google,
it suggests that ipv6 is disabled on the DC. We have two DC's in our environment and both have ipv6 enabled as does the exchange server. If I try to re-run the installation for the role alone, i.e. Setup /mode:install /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
/role:HubTransport, it fails with "The machine is not configured for installing "BridgeheadRole" Datacenter Role."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Error when running setup: Attach to native process

    Hi,
I try to install the oracle iplanet webserver (version 7.0.13) on linux (centos 6.2, 64 bits).
I first installed the compat-libstdc++-33 packages.
After that I installed JRE, this version:
    java version "1.6.0_31"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_31-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.6-b01, mixed mode)
To install the iplanet webserver I first extract the content of the downloaded file (Oracle-iPlanet-Web-Server-7.0.13-linux-x64).
Then I try to run setup with the command ./setup
The error I get is: attach to native process failed.
    Any idea what is wrong?
    Regards Stefan
    Thanks for the help.

    Stefan,
I am seeing the same error on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin (which is admittedly unsupported). This happened to me once before on an older version of Ubuntu, and as I recall, it was a missing library dependency, but I am not able to locate the fix I came up with at that time.
Interestingly, my existing ws7u12 installation runs fine, I just cannot upgrade to the latest update (15).
I have this software under support, but only on Solaris (I develop on Ubuntu, but deploy to my production Solaris server). In any case, as Ubuntu is not officially supported, opening an SR for this problem would be a waste of time.
I'll continue digging for my old solution and post here if I find it. If you've since discovered the solution, I'd love to hear it.
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Experiencing same issues when running a seq file on different machines

I have a sequence file that when ran on a desktop PC, takes about 30 mins to run and the same file runs in about 3 mins on a laptop. All the station configuration options are same on both the teststands. The only difference I see between the two machines in running the test is that the desktop pc has 256MB of RAM and the laptop has 1GB of RAM. My question is, could this RAM difference be the reason for the 30 min to 3 min difference?? I am sure that all the other options inside teststand that can affect the speed at which the seq file runs are same on both the machines. Any suggestions/comments will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Anuj

Can you tell us a little bit more about what this sequence file does?  Does it communicate to instruments?  Does it access network resources (shared network drives)?

  • Deploytool hangs when run on Win XP Home

    Hello,
I'm trying working with the J2EE SDK on Windows XP Home Edition. I can start the j2ee server but when I try to run the deploytool the splash screen comes up but then it hangs. Does anybody know why this is happening?

I'm running XP, and I can start the DeployTool whether the server is running or not. I can't add the server if it's not running, but the message I get from the DeployTool when this happens is very clear.
(I ran Windows 2000 for years, and it was excellent, but XP is better, in my opinion.)
Now, as to why it's happening... Don't know, but my installation is new and clean, with the latest downloads from Sun. On yours, there are any number of reasons why things could go wrong... wrong Java, wrong libraries, etc., etc.
If this hapened to me, I would download fresh copies of Java stuff, make sure the environment was right, reboot, and give it another try...
Sorry I couldn't be more definitive...

  • Win 7 64-bit, Intel 4600 graphics hangs when running Punch home design software

Punch Home and Landscape Pro V17.7 runs great on T500 Win 7 32-bit... all rendering is quick and accurate. This same design program opens, but hangs immediately when any attempt is made to modify the design.
I have posted to the Punch support site. When I called Tec, he said that my version would run on 32-bit or 64-bit machine.
It appears all program components are in the Programs (x86) directory and the Registry seems to have the proper paths and entries (beyond my level of expertise to modify.)
I also read the post regarding the latest Intel Iris 4600 driver on the Intel website, and I could follow this procedure to install the latest driver... but I would be DOWN if the driver did not work.
So, anyone have any ideas as to the proper steps to solve this issue?
    DRC

I see. Unfortunately you can't install the generic Intel driver on Haswell systems without losing brightness control. (You can still try installing it using Device Manager > Have Disk.)
