MBP 13, 10.6.8, desktop larger than monitor

About 4 or 5 days ago, my 13" MBP started something weird.  The desktop image doesn't fit on the monitor.  If I move the mouse to the edge of the screen, the image shifts in that direction.  e.g. if the menu bar is showing, then the dock is not until I move the mouse to the bottom edge.  It happens left/right also.  It happens on external monitors (several different ones) and the builtin LCD screen.  It was perfectly fine up until then.
The problem is very annoying, but doesn't make the computer unusable.  I've run SW Update and everything is current.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Nearly, Jon;
Hold control and scroll backwards, or ⌥⌘8 to turn zoom off.
I think Jon is confusing it with colour reversal - ⌃⌥⌘8.
Both can also be turned off in System Preferences > Universal Access > seeing tab.
I use both facilities daily.

  • My MBP has started to send out TCP packets larger than the MTU on the NIC - is there any place that this can be overriden?

    Got a very weird issue here and wondering if anyone has any other ideas. Basically over the wired NIC only, my Mac has started to send out large HTTP/HTTPS packets from the browser (> 1500 bytes) Captures show packet sizes from 2000 all the way to 4000 sometimes. This happens in Firefox and Chrome so doesn't appear to be application related.
    This causes fragmentation issues and traffic drops which basically causes most of my websites and  tools to crash and burn (and I get all sorts of SSL errors from applications, etc).
    It appears to be limited to just TCP packets as pings with the DF bit set will not send any larger than 1500 bytes.
    However if I switch to wireless, everything works fine and captures show the correct maximum packet size of 1500 for all packets leaving my client.
    The MTU on the  en0 interface is 1500 as per ifconfig and I made sure that it was set to 1500 in Network config panel (because there is an option for jumbo frames there which bumps up the MTU).
    A packet capture also shows that during the three way handshake the TCP MSS is successfully sent and negotiated as 1480, but then it appears to ignore that when sending packets later in the TCP stream.
    I've rebooted, upgraded to 10.7.4, checked the "sysctl" outputs and matched against a Mac not having the issue.
    This is the newest MBP 15 inch model.
    Any other ideas on things to check?

    Have you used any sort of "tuner" software? You are obviously an advanced user. Sometimes we hack things up and forget about it later. If you are sure you didn't do that, maybe poke around with IPv6 settings. Supposedly people are trying to enable that and it is going to be a disaster.

  • EMac desktop is larger than the screen / display ????? Help

    My oldest mac, an eMac 1 Ghz G4, 640 mb SDRAM, running 10.4.11 has had a screen display problem for months now. The graphics card is ATI Radeon 7500 (CRT - 1280 x 960 @ 72 Hz, 32 bit, no core image supported). It is over 7 years old.
    The desktop is larger than the screen, so it is a hassle to constantly have to move the desktop around.
    I'm not sure what it started after.
    I have tried changing all the display resolutions, colors and freq to no avail. I also re-calibrated the screen without change. Updates to 10.4 have not changed it.
    Is the graphics cards failing ?? There is no distortion or lines on the screen. The kids can still play games on it fine.
    ANY thoughts ??

    This is a real long shot, but is Zoom by chance turned on in the Universal system preference? If so, turn that off and see if that makes a difference.
    If not, you can try resetting PRAM (restart the system and hold down the p, r, command and option keys until the system gives its startup chime a second time) and see if that does anything useful.
    If neither of those possibilities help, I'll have one other suggestion, so post back and let us know.
    Regards.

  • Compressor setting so it won't output a video larger than source?

    Hello.
    I am sending a whole library of videos (most Apple ProRes, but varrying video dimensions based on the project) through Compressor 4 and I'm having an issue where, for some of the videos (with smaller video dimensions), the settings I'm choosing result in the transcoded videos being larger (in terms of dimensions) than the source (ie. if the source is 720p, the resulting video is 1080p).
    I am using the following two settings:
    - HD for Apple Devices (5 Mbps)
    - HD 1080p for Video Sharing
    Example 1 - I fed a 640 x 360 (Apple ProRes) file into Compressor 4 and selected the "HD for Apple Devices (5 Mbps)" preset. The resulting transcoded video was larger than 640 x 360 (I can't remember the actual size anymore, sorry). There is no option available, that I can see, to modify the preset to NOT create a file larger than the source?
    Example 2 - I fed a 720p (Apple Animation) file into Compressor 4 and selected the "HD 1080p for Video Sharing" preset. The resulting transcoded video was 1080p. I though because the preset is marked "Up to 1920 x 1080" it wouldn't go beyond 1080p (ie. scale down anything larger to 1080p), but also thought that it would maintain the source dimensions and not enlarge a 720p source to 1080p?
    Maybe this is how Compressor is supposed to work (ie. making resulting videos larger than source), but I'm hoping there's a way to modify the presets to not do this "ie. an option to not create a video with dimensions larger than the source)? Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

    Apple devices have a standard frame size they encode to, so yes, this is how it works.

  • Printing to a PDF page larger than your FM document

    When printing to a PDF page larger than your FM document, try this:
    Use File > Print Book, set up your printer for Adobe PDF and 11x17 (or whatever your preferred page size is), and deselect Generate Acrobat Data. Turn on Registration marks if you like. Then, print, and the book should print, centered, on the larger page size.

    Would like to ask if someone knows that any setting that would allow the PDF file larger than 2Mb be displayed within web browser IE 7, for some strange reasons, the PDF file will stop download at arround 800 some Kb, and I waited for almost 15 minutes with no further action.

    Mike I have a similar problem with down loading PDF files larger that 3MB. I have three computers with Win XP, IE7 and 56K connection. I have tried to down load three different PDF files from the same source - 1.3MB 2.3MB and 5.3MB. The Computer with Reader 7.0 downloads and opens all files. The computers with Reader 8.1.2 and 9.0 downloads and opens the smaller files but stop at 3.2 MB on the larger file with an error message "The file is damaged and could not be repaired".
    As fixes to the problem I have tried turning off any accelerators, installing and using Monzilla foxfire (then removed it since I had the same problem), increasing the cash size from 250MB to 1GB, Saving the file to the desktop rather than opening the file. I have not found useful help in Adobe Reader knowledge base.
    Any suggestions?

  • When I send an email with an attachment larger than 1 MB in iMail, the email takes forever to be sent.

    When I send an email with an attachment larger than 1 MB from iMail, the email gets suck in the sent folder.  This happens no matter if I am using wireless or using an ethernet connection.

    Many email programs, including Mail, will send data up to a certain size.
    The good new - there are some solutions. You can compress the file and make the email much faster to send; you can download a free application like Compress, which also allows you to uncompress. Or, you can send your email via your webmail connection (your ISP, like ATT); if you manage your email through your desktop computer, the email should be sent just fine.
    Apple Mail is designed for smaller documents, well under 1mb.

  • Batch Resize photos Larger than a certain size.

    Is there a way to have a script that searches a directory and any image files that are larger than 1000 x 1000 pixels are resized to 500 x 500 pixels and then saved over righting the sources file?
    I am asking because our server has over 40,000 photos all over the place and I would like to reduce the space they take on the server.

    I don't think that getting the file's length is the best way to determine if the file needs resizing. Especially if the file is in a format that supports compression. I think you would end up either setting the test value too low and open a lot of files that don't need resizing or set too high and miss files that do.
    Also using getFiles() without a file mask will get all files and folders in the source folder. You will need to make sure it is an image file before trying to open in Photoshop to resize.
    I think the function below would be a better way to determine if the file needs resizing. It tries to get the XMPMetadata to determine width and height. If that fails because the file does not have metadata it gets the size from Bridge.
    var file = new File('~/desktop/_SLP7637.jpg');
    var resize = needsResizing( file );
    var resizeStr = ''
    resize? resizeStr = 'needs resizing': resizeStr = 'does not need resizing';

    You need to understand pixels better know what is going on when you do things.  All pixels are not created equal.  Some have better quality the others.
    When you have a camera that take captures  3000x2000 px for an image and you have a good lens and exposure setting you wing up with 6,000,000 quality pixels for your image.
    If you resample that image  for the web to fit within 300x200 pixels you wind up with a 60,000 high quality web size image. Or a high quality image that will fit on your display at its resolution. The images resoultion setting is meanless for displays use their resolutuin they do not support image print DPI resolution setting.  And Displays do not hava a 72DPI resolution.
    So when your post processing think about Pixels DPI is meaningless except when you use a unit based on DPI like inches.  However also remember Displays do no support the images print dpi resolution.  The only time 1" on display equal 1" in print is when the images print resolution is the same as the display you are using. All displays do not  have the same resolution/ Most desktop displaye are around 100DPI that is changing and Laptop and tablets can have resolution above 300DPI. So what will nor fit on your displat may well fix on a laptop or tablet.
    DPI is actual pixel size 100DPI pixels a 1/100" x 1/100" = 10,000 per square inch  300DIP 1/300"x 1/300"  90,000 px per sq inch.
    The same number on pixels image on a 300dpi display is 9 time larger on a 100Dpi display. What may not fit one your low resolution display may fit on the same size high resolution display for the display  displays more pixels then your display can.
    If you resample that 300x200 web size image to back to a 3000x2000 pixel image for print you wind up with 6,0000,000 lower quality pixels.
    Though the 300X200 pixels image was a high quality web size image much of the original 6,000,000 image quality was reduced in the 300x200 px image. Much of the detail you had in the original 6,000,000 pixels image was discarded in the process.  The new 6,000,000 pixels image was made only from a 60,000pixel image they were not captures using a camera exposure.  The camera had the actual real detail in front of it to capture.  All the computer had were 300x200 pixels it has to add details for the larger image and it does by interpolating the 300x200px image.
    Preserve the pixel you get from your cameras. They are the highest quality pixels you will ever have for your images.  Every time you resample an image up or down in number of pixels you loose some image quality.   Not one of the original pixels remain intact you wind up with a totally new image created by interpolating the old image.  Do not save the new image over the old image and loose your good high quality pixels.

  • I cannot print anything larger than a 4x5" from LR4 to my Epson 3880

    No matter what I do I cannot print pictures larger than a 4x5" image from LR4 to my Epson 3880.
    I have doublechecked all of my settings in the page and print sections. I have even watched various internet training on printing from LR4 including Matt Kloskowski in Kelby Training....all to no avail.
    I have absolutely no problem with printing in PS CS6.

    The problem continues to be exporting a photo from IPHOTO to PE 9 organizer
    Why do this? You're just making life harder. If you want to use iphoto as your image manager, don't use organizer, or vice versa. If you want to use iphoto to organize your photos, set up PSE as your external editor there, or export the photos to the desktop, save the edited photos as new images and reimport them to iphoto. Using both only makes your life harder and creates problems, as you've discovered.

  • LiDE 35 Can't scan larger than US Letter

    Does anyone know how to get a CanoScan LiDE (or perhaps any scanner) to scan larger than US Letter?
    I can't get a full size A4 scan in any of the built in scanning options (image capture / print & fax prefpane / preview).
    The Overview prescan preview always crops the bottom couple of cm off the image, and when I try to put the actual A4 height in cm into the dimensions, I get an error sheet saying:
    The value "29.7" is too big (Maximum value is 27.94).
    27.94 is the US Letter height.
    Canon's scanning software supports A4 alright (but has no preview), so it looks like this is some system-wide issue.

    Just tried scanning with my LiDE200 and I can get an A4 scan. This is by manually dragging the preview hairlines or by entering the x-y values.
    With regards to the x-y, to check this I entered a value of 220 for the width and got this message;
    "The value ”220” is too big (Maximum value is 21.60693)."
    Likewise I entered a value of 300 for the length and got this message'
    "The value ”300” is too big (Maximum value is 29.70107)."
    So for your scanner driver to limit the scanning dimensions I wonder if you have a region setting on the Mac that is causing this? I don't really want to change settings on my MBP to test this but I did just want to let you know that A4 scanning is possible.
    Also, regarding MP Navigator, if you tick the box "Use the scanner driver" and then click 'Open Scanner Driver', this will open the ScanGear window allowing you to preview the document.

  • Print the report on page has width larger than height and not landscape mode

    Hi,
    I'm trying to print report on page (Width: 18cm, Height: 13cm) which the width larger than the height.
    The problem is windows keeps changing the page oreintation to landscape and when I change it back to portrait its changing the width to 13cm and height to 18cm.
    I'm using dot matrix printer to print the report, if i put Landscape , printer is printing the text in horizontal.
    Already i have tried to setup the custom for on printer, and used custom page size but it is changing to landscape.
    I need to print the report with out preview, direct print top printer, NO PDF....
    Thank you .....

    Hi Anil,
    After testing the issue in my environment, I can reproduce it. When I set (Width: 18cm, Height: 13cm) as the Report Page size, it would automatically convert Orientation from Portrait to Landscape. Because the Orientation displayed is dependent on the page
    width and page height of the report.
    But in my scenario, the Orientation option just change the Width and Height sizes, it couldn’t affect the text rotation. I guess this issue can be caused by the printer and printer driver, please try to update them. Reference:

  • How can I download to the desktop rather than preview, preview is a nuisance

    How can I download items to my desktop rather than "preview"? Preview is a nuisance.

    You can set up a default download location through your browser(s) Preferences.
    If you do not want Preview to open the files, do the following:
    Highlight your file>File>Get Info>
    In the Get Info window, scroll down to "Open with:"
    Select the application you want to open the file with.
    Click the "Change All..." button if you want to "Use this application to open all documents like this.”
    ==========================
    Short cut:
    Control mouse click (right mouse click if available), Open With...-> Other
    Pick Preview on a PDF document, and make sure to check Always Open With before hitting Open.
    Thanks to a brody for the above short cut.

  • Database much larger than expected when using secondary databases

    Hi Guys,
    When I load data into my database it is much larger than I expect it to be when I turn on secondary indexes. I am using the Base API.
    I am persisting (using TupleBindings) the following data type:
    A Key of size ~ *80 Bytes*
    A Value consisting of 4 longs ~ 4*8= *32 Bytes*
    I am persisting ~ *280k* of such records
    I therefore expect ballpark 280k * (80+32) Bytes ~ *31M* of data to be persisted. I actually see ~ *40M* - which is fine.
    Now, when I add 4 secondary database indexes - on the 4 long values - I would expect to see approximately an additional 4 * 32 * 280k Bytes -> ~ *35M*
    This would bring the total amount of data to (40M + 35M) ~ *75M*
    (although I would expect less given that many of the secondary keys are duplicates)
    What I am seeing however is *153M*
    Given that no other data is persisted that could account for this, is this what you would expect to see?
    Is there any way to account for the extra unexpected 75M of data?
    Thanks,
    Joel

    Edited by: JoelH on 10-Feb-2010 10:59

    Hi Joel,
    Now, when I add 4 secondary database indexes - on the 4 long values - I would expect to see approximately an additional 4 * 32 * 280k Bytes -> ~ 35MA secondary index consists of a regular JE database containing key-value pairs, where the key of the pair is the secondary key and the value of the pair is the primary key. Your primary key is 80 bytes, so this would be 4 * (4 + 80) * 280k Bytes -> ~ 91M.
    The remaining space is taken by per-record overhead for every primary and secondary record, plus the index of keys itself. There are (280k * 5) records total. Duplicates do not take less space.
    I assume this is an insert-only test, and therefore the log should contain little obsolete data. To be sure, please run the DbSpace utility.
