MBP 13" 2.26 High Idling Temperature with no applications open

Hi,
Basically my MBP is idling at above 60 celcius with no applications open. It is used on a desk all the time and is currently charging. With minimal load open it often raises to 90C + which leads me to believe that the thermal paste needs to be replaced.
Just wanted to know if my assumptions were correct and whether I will be able to get it fixed with Apple Care if this is the case?
Thanks for your help !

The 60 C at idle doesn't sound too unusual. The 90 C might be high depending what the "minimal load" means. For example, just using Safari, graphic/flash stuff can get the temperature up there.
Maybe it's just me, but my machine seems to average up to 10 C hotter since I upgraded to 10.6.3 from 10.6.2. I've watched Activity Monitor to see if somebody is working the CPU, but nothing seems significant...

60°C is way too high when idling.
Your cpu should stay 15°C lower than that (mine stays between 38-45°C, with Safari and Mail opened).

  • High CPU temperatures with Yosemite

    Hi,
Today I made a clean install of Yosemite on my Macbook Pro. I saw a big difference of the cpu and other components temperature than Mavericks:
(the weather is not changed from yesterday)
    Yosemite:
    - Safari with only an open tab
    cpu:  58°-67°
    Mavericks:
    - Safari with three open tabs (Facebook, Gmail, Youtube)
    - Illustrator  cs3 with an open file (big size an some vectors)
    - iTunes
    48°-52°
Also the battery lost 50 minutes of autonomy than the same situation with Mavericks
Yosemite uses too much cpu (gpu) resources or is a poorly optimised s.o.
Probably Istat Pro is still not too compatible wit the new os x....I hope in some fix or update that improves the situation (for Yosemite...)
Someone has encountered the same problem?
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011), 2,4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Open Activity Monitor and see what's running in the background under All Processes.
Whatever is using most of your CPU's resources is not needed, click on quit process and see if that helps keep your CPU run cooler.
Also, check your login items and see what's loading when you start your MB Pro.  Uncheck those items if not needed and restart your computer.
    I have a Late 2011 MB Pro that has an idle temp of 47 - 50 C.
Another possible solution, if you're techically competent, open the back of your MB Pro and blow off gently the inside of your MB Pro to get rid of any dust or particles inside your notebook.

  • Working with multiple applications open

I was wondering if having multiple applications open has a negative effect on the speed of my RAM. Someone told me that it's actually a good thing to have more than one open at a time in OS X. Could that be true?
I'm interested because I only have 256 MB and I use Photoshop CS (a real memory hog) a lot for manipulating big images. I'm also online pretty much all the time.
    Thank you.
    Allan

Yeah, I think I see those beach balls in my sleep! Thanks Littleshoulders for the link. It's really helpful. I think I'll buy that ebook when I can. The other link on my previous post that led somewhere on this site helped a lot, too. The more I learn, the better.
So I guess that's a fallacy that it's good to have many apps open at a time, especially Photoshop and the huge images I work with. You know, I'm sure I read that in a book about using OS X. I don't see how there would be a benefit to have multiple apps open.
I think RAM will be my next purchase, followed, of course, by a newer, more powerful Mac.

  • After streaming show on mac mini, the audio of that show streams randomly with no applications open. Is there an audio cache

My husband and son streamed an episode of a show on the mac mini a few months ago. Now with no application launched, the entire audio stream plays on the computer. Where is it coming from and how do I delete it?  I have reset safari, with no results. There is nothing to 'force quit'.

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

  • Control with moniter applications open on.

I have been search around for a way to control which moniter an application will open on by default when using a dual screen setup but I haven't been able to find anything. Any suggestions?

You can try using devil's pie and setting the window geometry to be offset by the size of the first screen but that may not work.

(is (application_name) "<Your Application Name From xwininfo or xprop>")

  • Higher Idle CPU Temps with Newest BIOS update for T430s/T430

My idle temperatures of my CPU as reported by TPFC .62 before the UEFI Bios update were hovering around low 40's to high 40's. Now after the UEFI BIOS update the Idle temps as reported by TPFC .62 is a lot higher. It idles anywhere between 47 to high 55's. I noticed this immediately I updated the BIOS. Anyone else notice this???

  • Portege M400 - High CPU temperature

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with CPU temperature in my M400 (Vista OS). When I power up computer, initial temperature is around 35C, but after about 15 minutes of work it jumps to 60C and stays there.
Last night reached 80C and that really concerned me. I tried anything from upgrading BIOS (v3.6) to changing power options in Vista.
I don't know if this is actually funny, but a few days ago I placed a pack of chocolate next to cooler (about 10 centimeters away) and after 5 minutes I noticed it started to melt. :(
Please help! Any suggestion is welcome!
    Regards,
    Jovan

    Hi Jayjay,
I haven't experienced any unusual shut downs so far. The only problem was keyboard buttons overheating. After using computer in tablet mode keyboard would become pretty hot.
However, as you suggested, I used vacuum cleaner on my computer and the situation is quite better now. Idle temperature is 44C-47C, while during high performance it goes up to 70C. The good part is that when I leave the computer idle for few minutes it automatically drops down to default 44C-47C (not like before).
Now, I can't be absolutely sure how I managed to do this, but it definitely has something to do with Toshiba Power Saver, which is only like "add-on" to Vista's power management. There is an option that sets CPU to Cooling optimized mode. The down side of this story is that my cooler is really noisy now but I don't care much! :)
    Thank you for your help!
    Regards!

    Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 2048 MB
Video: Software Final Cut Pro X  10.0.8
I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol.  This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C.  The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem.  By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly.  An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification  for this model is
    Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
    Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac  is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely.  Has anyone experienced this problem.
    Frank Howell

When was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further.

  • Can high cpu temperature melt processor?

Hallo, mayby stupid question, but i was just wondering, if high temperature inside my macbook air (2012 i5) can melt my processor or something like that...
I am talking about 85 C continuosly1 or max 2 hours per day at cpu (oc course not every day) :/ i dont want to demage my mac...
    Thx for any answers.

High enough temperatures can melt anything, but your mackbook air is designed to operate continuously, with fans to manage CPU temp.  As long as you are in an environment where the air temperature is within standard (10 to 35C), your macbook is fine.

Yes I have to agree with Maesus, The stock thermal tape that comes on the boxed heatsink should be removed and replaced with some quality thearmal grease. ie Artic silver..ect.. ..Sean REILLY875

  • High System Temperature

    Hi,
I am running Arch Linux with XFCE4. My system is really high on temperature which forces fan to run 24X7 and hence poor battery life. I usually get 45-50 degree Celsius on windows but i am getting around 65 with just browser open on Arch. I have configured TLP, Powertop (would be nice if it could permanently save its recommendation), thinkfan and power regression solution suggested by phoronix. I have a Thinkpad T420.

What processor and video chip do you have? Are you using a spinning-disk hard drive or an SSD?
Also, how do you have your sensors configured?
Thanks for replying. I have Thinkpad T420i (4177CTO) with i7 Dual Core 2620M 2.7 Ghz Intel processor, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD 3000 (integrated) and Nvidia NVS 4200 1 Ghz GPU, and 500 GB 7200 RPM spinning-disk hard drive.
I mostly tried these two webpages to setup thinkfan/sensors.
    http://thinkpad-wiki.org/Thinkfan#Keine … nel_2.6.38
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … ostcount=3
Installed lm_sensors and ran sensor-detect to locate sensors using command find /sys/devices -type f -name "temp*_input"
I have thinkpad_acpi, tp_smapi, coretemp in modules section of rc.conf and thinkfan in daemons.
Installed thinkfan and added options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.d.conf and created /etc/defualt/thinkfan with START=yes
I have TLP installed and added it to daemons.
I came from Ubuntu due to heat problems. I think this laptop suffers from power regression issues. I updates to grub2 and added pcie_aspm=force to /etc/default/grub but i couldn't do sudo update-grub but pcie_aspm=force seems to have replicated itself to kernel line of grub.cfg
I have ran Powertop. I wish if i could make it permanent.
    Thanks.

Sometimes a box pops up saying "High CPU usage with Firefox".
I'm not sure what to do or if this is harming my laptop.

Well i tried the Microsoft Malware and everything is fine on this end and you are still crashing on me so with that said,i am giving you one more day to resolve this issue if i still get crashes from you i am sorry to say i will have to try another company as my browser and see if i have an issue with them if i don't,i will not be reinstalling Firefox again if i do,then it may be another issue so i will have to see but i have no Malware here but thank you for your response anyway...

  • Install stops. Log reads "Idle 40min with 1 open connection"

OK, I've tried this nearly a dozen different times and ways. Install begins normally and shortly after "calculating time remaining" changes to an actual time, the installation stops. The Installer is still running, but no progress occurs. The log file shows "localhost installdb [414]: idle 10min with 1 open connection"
The [414] number changes during different attempts, and every 10 minutes a new entry occurs. "idle 20min, idle 30min, idle 40min", etc. It goes on like this for hours until I quit/restart the Installer.
Now for the basics: Titanium PB running updated version of Tiger. 1Gig of RAM ... original Apple, installed at the factory. No peripherals attached. Have tried upgrade, archive and install, and erase and install.
I have also tried to install just the required files (no languages, printer drivers, or x11). I have run disk first aid, and there are no problems on my drive.
The DVD has been checked at the start of several (but not all) of the install attempts and all have passed.
The only thing that might be different/unusual about my computer is that I replaced my optical drive (original combo drive) with a new dual-layer dvd combo drive. But it was guaranteed to be Apple-certified. It's model MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-85JS.
Tomorrow I'll try to install using it in target-disk mode, but in the meantime, I thought I'd see if anybody else has any other ideas.
    Thanks.

I suspect the drive, but you might see if the DVD is dirty or has a thin oily film on it. Some have had this problem, and cleaning it made it work.

  • Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3

I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!

    Hi Klaus1
I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
Thanks for your help and input so far!

  • How to calculate Min & Max temperature with just air temperature

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement in which I have to build a Bex Query in which I have to find the Min & Max temperature of a day if a specific date range is used in the query.I have checked the multiprovider and there is only one field available
which is "Air temperature" and it's a KF. I have built a query which will give you the temperature for the day if you give a particular date range.
My question is,is it possible for me to find the min and max temperature with just air temperature as input?
Please let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    Hi,
You have to create two KFs for Min and Max temperatures,
In  Min Temp KF definition, Aggregation Tab-->Minimum--> reference char as 0calday
In Max Temp KF definition, Aggregation tab-->Maximum-->Reference char as 0calday
