MBP 13" 2.66 or MBP 15" 2.53 for FCE?

About to scoop up a MBP. Was thinking of getting a 13" 2.66, gonna use FCE for basic video stuff for work. Nothing too mind blowing.
A user here suggested that I go to the middle 15" 2.53 not just for screen real estate, but because the 13" MacBook Pro has the shared graphics memory.
I talked to Apple and they suggested that same thing. Am I just being upsold or is this a solid investment. I have no problem going to the 15" 2.4, simply for the I-5, but may be stepping up a bit more in price for the 15" 2.53 than I am comfortable with. Am I going to REALLY need to?
Thanks!

As a general rule, when I buy a laptop, I wait until the last possible moment,
then purchase the least expensive 15". The difference in clock speed is not
that important. If I were buying the current lineup, I would definitely
add the high resolution non-glossy display option. Screen real estate
makes a huge difference in work effectiveness.
If you're trying to keep the price to a minimum, you could delay purchasing
AppleCare, and you could maybe skimp on the RAM and hard disk,
since you can always upgrade those later.
In any case, take your time. Wait until you know exactly what you want
before you cross that (sandy) bridge.

Can I use MBP 17" ac adaptor for my MBA 13"? Thanks.

Yes, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage then what is delivered with the machine.  Just don't use the MBA adapter on the MBP.

  • MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason- help!

MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason.
My MBP has been working fine, until I updated to 10.5. Originally this problem started in Bootcamp running XP, but has now done this once in OS X, just a while ago. There seems to be no difference- even when the psu is plugged in. Just now when it did this again, I pressed the power key and the led on the front blinked really fast, then there was a tone- like it was doing a firmware update (but I did the firmware update months ago!).
I've done a power reset- taking out the battery and holding the power key down for 20 seconds, which seems to have helped, but then again this problem seems to be rather sporadic, and one can never tell when it is going to happen next.
Oh yes, there is a mechanical 'click' that sounds when it does it- like a relay click. Is there a relay power related IC on the motherboard?
Any clues anyone? (I'm sending this exact letter to Apple as well)
    Tom

It's an interesting thread, but I seem to have the problem even when the cord is plugged in. I did have battery problems when I first got this MBP, but they seemed to settle down once I used the computer a bit more. FWIW, I have now got them mostly while using Bootcamp. BC beta 1.3 was really stable and good. It wasn't until I bought Leopard that this problem started. And again, it's only happened 3 or 4 times now.
I'll just have to keep saving. I'm sure Apple will wise up to this sooner or later. (Incidently, I haven't been able to send anything to Apple as I can't find their direct contact addie. Can someone 'remind' me? Thanks!

Why is Powernap not available for other MB's such as the MBP mid 2010 model for example?

I have a 2010 MBP 6,2 with an aftermarket SSD. My machine gets mail and notifications while asleep, but I do not have any powernap pref box in energy savings under 10.9.1
I do not have an Apple SSD. I have a Crucial M4-CT512M4SSD2
Apple did replace my MB last Fall under the video fault problem (for free after 3 years.....thanks Apple), but it stills identifies as a 6,2  Boot ROM  MBP61.0057.B0F
I wish I could shut off this powernap feature, but have no access to it.

2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4Gig 500MBHDD boots slow.  It finishes post in the same time as an identical MBP, and then hangs for 30 seconds on one of the ethernet adapters, before finishing the boot.  Once booted it is normal.   Turning off airport changes nothing.  Hardline adapter is not plugged in.  Thunderbolt adapter is not used.  Bluetooth is off.  Did this out of box.  Identical MBP boots to login screen in 36 seconds.  Disk repair, permission repair, and safe mode boot have
already been done, no change.  Boot time is consistent.  Hangs at the same place each time.  Right after post.  Bad adapter?
    Comments, solutions please.

... and so ... now a few days later, success.   I ran
your software but it told me nothing I hadn 't seen
    in verbose boot.
Consistently, following good post, the boot hung
for 30 seconds on the adapters, (cards, chips, NICs.
Ethernet cards, whatever you prefer to call them)
either the airport card or the hard line.  It would then
proceed at normal pace to the login screen.
Since it came out of the box that way, software
conflict was not a go.  I guessed glitched driver or
fetch instruction.  I zapped the PRAM (cleared
NVRAM) and reloaded the OS, updates, Garage Band,
iPhoto (one of Apple's true dogs in an otherwise
rare arena) iMovie, Photoshop, Lightroom, their
updates, and my files.   MBP pro now boots to login

hubcaps and hood ornaments as befits how like
things ... and turned off all the Asian and other fonts
    I will. ever use.
Best guess ... corrupt driver or corrupt fetch script ...

  • How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time?

How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time? It brings up the window with that world map to do it, including the warning that "this is the 5th and final time I can do this", when inserting a DVD and opening "DVD Player", but it never executes my click on the "Change Drive Region" button prompt.
VLC or Quicktime Player won't play it either, but won't bring up that window to change Region Code anyway....
Otherwise, I'm not having any other issues with this MBP at all. Peak performance on all counts :-)
I tried resetting SMC after chatting w/ Apple Support, but it didn't help.
That was the link they provided. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
    Tried zapping PRAM as well.
    Thanks for any clues, Rene

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed. However see this also:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25416?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • MACBOOK PRO 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB(Upgraded MBP 2012) an alternate for RETINA MBP 15 or NOT?How good is its potential, reliability ?

I am a student and an aspiring filmmaker.I am also into digital cinematography (Canon 550D) and now will be venturing into editing. I am in DIRE NEED of help
I have a few problems regarding the purchase of Macbook pro.I live in Kolkata(India).I have been waiting for the past 1 and a half years to buy a Mac but after the release of Retina Macbook pro 15.I am left confused. Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
    A. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
    B. Please enlighten me on some nice headphones from Sennheizer under 90 USD.I am considering Sennheiser HD 439.I am not a bass freak and I want something to use for listening to voice, loud clear. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion  !
Finally, If you know anyone who knows about this configuration (15inch 2.6 8GB RAM 750GB) and its performance than please help me out my friends. Any small detail, input, you feel like please let me know. Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.

Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD?  If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast.  One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money.  Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions.  HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model.  The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical.  So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up.  The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram.  According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD.  Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

  • Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp with retina display for Time Machine?

Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp (OS 10.10.1) with retina display for Time Machine? Or can it be connected once a week or whenever I want? I used to have an external drive always connected to my previous mbp, but it made moving my mbp around a bit of a hassle with it connected...

When the backup drive is not connected, some of the free space on the internal drive will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. Local snapshots will protect you from unintended file deletions, but not from a drive failure. You should only go as long between backups as you're willing to lose data. If losing a week's worth of work is acceptable to you, then that backup frequency is OK. Otherwise, it isn't.

  • Using MBP in closed mode for extended periods

I use my MBP mostly in closed lid mode as a desktop computer and only use it as a notebook when I'm on the move. I was wondering, is this a bad setup considering that when the lid is closed it's covering up vents and holding heat in?

    Hi,
I just installed Leopard on to my Macbook Pro (which is attached to a 19" Samsung monitor) and cannot get Spaces to work.
I was told it is possible to have Spaces work in closed mode though. I just have some concerns about keeping the MBP closed for extended periods of time, particularly when running programs that place a heavy demand on the processors (i.e. Second Life, Photoshop etc).
Is it not possible for the computer to overheat or for the screen to somehow get damaged with the top closed ?
I really want to use Spaces but it does not appear to work with dual screen set ups.

  • MBP as additional monitor for iMac

Hi all, I have a an imac and a macbook pro. I have purchased a belkin mini dvi to mini dvi, I can now have the imac display as an external monitor, I was wondering if the opposite is possible, so I would like to have macbook pro as the external monitor?
    Thanks

    Hi,
sorry to say but no it's not possible.
The iMac is at the moment the only Mac with video-in capabilities, the MBP don't have them.

  • I have a MBP with service center for last 21 days. The issue is device doesn't boot up. They are replacing part by part logic board, hard disk, wires and still they need more time. No confidence over there service wing. How to get MBP replacement?

I submitted my MBP 2012 model to service center on
    1. August 12: They reinstalled OS. Took it back on 13th evening
    2. August 14: They did some hardware check and reinstalled OS. Took it back on 20th evening
    3. August 21: Stil with service center, they are investigating
    What service they are providing.
    Very bad experience with apple.

    After august 21:
They changed logic borad and told me that HDD is fine.
After few days I called back they told me HDD is faulty.
I do not know rather they do not know what is the issue.
Thats why I want complete replacement of MBP.
    Then they say about policies.
I want to get MBP replaced, as the warranty has expired on 28th.
I do not know whether they can resolve issue or not
The super advisors from apple team are also co-ordinating still it is taking too long.
So my question is I need a repacement, How to get it?

  • MBP, Are they good for graphic design???

    Hi...
I ve been thinking of buying a MBP because most of the time as a freelance l move from one place to another, and im wondering if this "babes" will do me just fine for design, the thing is that most of the programs that I use are photoshop, illustrator, flash, firework, dreamweaver, after effects, and some times editing in finl cut, and I ve been reading in other post that most of this progrmas run slower, and they recomend the G5 Quad, but for the moment I don t have that kind of money and as a told you I move a lot, what can a do, should I go for it?? or what??...
    Thanks

Well, Yes, the G5 quad would be appropriate for you, but how does that solve your moving around problem?
The MBP is perfect for your needs, think about the future a bit, and all applications you mentioned will run natively. As of now, the speed difference between the G4 Powerbooks and the MBP is so minute while runing Adobe apps that it makes no sense to invest in older technology for immediate gains.
Also, if you do a search, you will find many related topics and your question has been answered.
    Good luck.

  • Is MBP 13" 2.66 strong enough for FCE?

I am making the switch from PC to Mac. I need a laptop for basic editing with both audio & video. I am more concerned with video editing, as my work has tons of audio PC's decked out. I should preface I work in radio, so my audio edits are mainly :10-:60 pieces. And my videos are 1-5 minutes in length, mainly YouTube stuff, I'm not trying to make Avatar here! I'm going to buy a MBP with Final Cut Express (I work with Sony Vegas Video 9.0 now). So the question! Is a 13 inch MBP 2.66 strong enough for me? Should I upgrade the ram from 4G to 8G? Or should I be looking at a 15 inch? Thanks!

    Hello Atpmixx,
the MBP has definitely enough horsepower to run FCE but it doesn't have much screen real estate ... personally I'd go for the 15" screen. Be aware that you will need to add external storage in order to edit effectively. Also be aware that FCE does not handle all formats/framerates.
Upgrading the RAM will not be necessary: Final Cut is still 32-bit software and thus can't use more than 4 GB of RAM ... in other words, it'll not speed up up your render times.
    hope this helps

  • Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP.  I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S.  Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed?  Do I need to replace the MBP?  Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months.  without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this.  I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue?  I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

  • MBP vs. MB For a College Student

I will be going to college this next September. I want a laptop that will be able to last me most (hopefully) all four years. I need to be able to throw it in a backpack walk around campus pull it out take notes take it back to my room plug it into a external display (can the MB run a display with its own display closed?) and keyboard and start working. My main concern about the MBP is its size (how well does it fit into a backpack?) the case (will it dent with college use?) and my concerns with the MB is power (I have a 1.6 G5 tower that I will be leaving at home for my younger sister, how much faster will the MB be) the screen (is it compleatly impossible to use it outside, ill be in LA, ill want to be outside) Graphics (how much does no graphics card affect my ability to do photoshop, iphoto, light gaming) Life (will a MB be able to hold up speed wise for all 4 years?) Alot of questions, thanks in advance for your help
    David

I think you will be better off with a MacBook in my opinion. The glared screen is not as much of an issue as you would think (have you ever tried taking a "matte" display outside either? They are both pretty sad..).
The resolution on them is great for the size (the 13" display has more pixels than the 14" did last monday), so you will have enough room to multitask i.e. Facebook and iChat at the SAME TIME!!
The graphics system in the MacBook is not as bad as everyone says it is. If it becomes an issue, getting more RAM for the MacBook will make a huge difference, because the graphics technology uses system RAM (the kind you can upgrade) to act like a graphics card. For light gaming you will be fine.
The best part about the Macbook will be its size of course. A 13" widescreen laptop is going to be able to go with you wherever you want. I can atest to this as I have a 12" Powerbook and it is with me almost everywhere I go with a simple little sleeve for my backpack like someone else suggested. If you want better protection or want to build a pack beginning with how it'll hold your MacBook, you might want to look at sfbags.com or booqbags.com or tombihn.com for a laptop messenger bag or backpack that may cost a little more, but will be the perfect fit for your new computer and will also have enough room to hold a textbook and notepad.
Another thing, I don't know if you are aware of this ability, but with a Mac and an external display (you could do this with your G5 too), you can span screens, meaning an external display gives you that many more pixels to work with. In my opinion, there is no reason to shut that lid of your laptop to work on an external setup because you're giving up 1280x800 pixels to work on.
And I'm always wrong with this, so someone back me up, but if I remember correctly, your worries with Photoshop don't matter because photoshop does not use the GPU near as much as people think it does and more processing is done on your dualcore intel chip and the system RAM.
Both computers are portables, so to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if your G5 tower is faster than them both, definitely the MacBook. That's just a fact of life with a portable machine. Like someone else said, get the 7200RPM drive in whichever model you choose because it will make your computer much faster in the long run.
With the money that you'd be saving if you went for the MacBook you can spend it instead on the extended warranty as someone else suggested (this will really ensure that your computer will last you 3 years), backup software or an external harddrive (look into getting .Mac for 1GB of online storage space and an email account and web hosting service, or check out lacie.com for some great little hard drives that aren't too expensive anymore), and a good protective case and maybe an extra battery for it. All in all that will probably end up costing you as much as the MBP would, but you get all the extras that make a portable computer a pleasure to own.
This is actually really funny, cause I'm going to college next year and I'm going for the MBP, and here I am convincing you to get something else, but i'm getting it for different reasons I guess.
