MBP 13" 2.8GHz i7 (2011) or MBP 13" 2.5GHz i5 (2012)?

Hey,
I'd like to upgrade my 2010 MBP Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro, and was just going to get the new basic 13" MBP, with the i5 2.5GHz and HD4000 setup, but I realised that last year's high-end 13" MBP is pretty much the same price, and it has a far more powerful CPU (i7 2.8GHz), however, only the HD3000 GPU...
I'd mainly be using Final Cut 7 with all the normal mundane apps too, so I figured the newest GPU would be most useful, plus getting the newly released 2012 MBP would help increase resale value. And, I'd upgrade the RAM to 8gb as soon as I got either machine.
What I'm asking is - does anyone have an insight into which MBP would perform best for my purposes? The (2011) 2.8GHz i7, but with only HD3000 GPU, or (2012) 2.5GHz i5 with HD4000 GPU?
Many thanks
Chris
(ps, I've tried, but can't find Geekbench scores comparing the two machines)

If I was in your shoes, I would go for the newer MB Pro.
Although the new MB Pro is using the i5 and not the i7 the late 2011 is using, you won't really see much of a speed difference because the bus speed of the new one is running at 1600MHz as opposed to the 1333MHz on the older one.
Memory is also faster on the newer MB Pro.
The video of the new one, althought not double the speed of the old MB Pro, it's still faster.  Again, because of the faster bus speed.
My suggestion is to go with the newer MB Pro.  New processor, faster RAM and bus speed and a newer version of Intel's Integrated graphics.
I own a late 2011 MB Pro with 16GB of RAM that I bought a month ago, kicking myself for not waiting.  But quite happy with what I have.

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

    Hi,

I gone throught the t coded like: MMPV, MMRV, OMSY, OB52
As per my company, fiscal yerar is v3 (Apr - Mar)
So now i am in posting period 10(Jan)
And my OB52 settings are       1-2011-12-2011-13-2011-16-2011
    In OMSY       2012-10-2012-9-2011-12
Here system displays as my fiscal year is 2012 and last FY is 2011.
I can't find out the mistake where it was. As a FI guy I know there is no mistake in FI side.

Last period in last Fy  12 - 2011
When i am trying to chage the last FY in OMSY, it is grayed out. I reveiwed some of the threads and based on that i was removed my Plants in OX18 also.
Pls guide me how to slove this..
    Regards,
    Gamidii

    Hi,
OMSY cannot be modified because plants are configured with the Company code.
First you need to unmap the plant with company code. Go to OX18 and delete the plants which have been mapped with your company code.
Then change the OMSY period. Once you have changed the period, map the plants with company code in the OX18.
And go to OMWD and assign Valuation grouping code for all the plants as "0001".
Please try it out in Quality server. Thanks.

  • Is the back of the 2011 MBA 13" the same as the 2012?

Is the back(bottom) of the 2011 MBA 13" the same as the 2012? i mean, is it possible to use one in the place of the other?
The thing is i'm not from US and i don't have a very good support, so asked a friend who is in US to buy a new back for my MBA, which is the 2011 model, but the one he bought is for the 2012, they look pretty much the same, but i don't know, just want to be sure...

I know a lot of people with iphone 5 and have never heard them complain about top button always brake and screen that decides to pop off or the back of their case is bending.
That sounds like a phone that has been dropped a numerous times.

  • MBP 15" 2.5Ghz display blink followed by system freeze

Lately my MBP sort of frozen with the blinking display, then it was unable to boot after I force shutdown the system, not even in the safe mode or the installation disk.
I have to run through the prcess of FSCK and resetting the PRAM before I can get it booting with the installation disk and run the Disk Utility to fix the permission.
I managed to get the system running again, and it went into the same problem I've mentioned above again and again...(I notice this only happen when I play the online flash game), eventhough I've fixed the permission everytime this problem occur.
Any tips on this issue? What has cause the disk error or the the permission error?
    Thanks

You seem to have all of your ducks in a row.  As far as your query in regards to HDD, I have four 750GB 7200RPM Seagate HDDs (ST9750420AS), one in my MBP, others for Time Machine and other backups.  All are spinning.  I suppose that is some kind of endorsement.
    Ciao.

  • Got MBP (15inch late2011) in Jan-2012... full screen is black. I am in india and apple guys said Graphic Processer is failed

I got a Macbook Pro (15-inch Late 2011 model) in Jan-2012. Two-three times, the screen would flicker and turn black... also got a message associated to graphic problem… so reported to Apple during the warranty period. The support folks said that it is a software problem, thus re-boot it and it worked for the time.
Now, I am in India and it just turned black. I tried resetting (command+option+p+r) but of no use. The Apple support person here says that the Graphic Processor is failed and needs to be replaced (may cost around US $1000).
I am out of apple warranty and do not want to spend such a big amount… can somebody please help?

I'm sorry, we wish we can help you, but for that level of problem you need to contact Apple directly and deal with them.
We are just users assisting other users and can't do any hardware or product type things.
    Again, sorry for your loss.

  • Display problem MBP 15(2.5GHz Intel Core 2 duo)

i noticed about 2 weeks ago an intermitant issue when  i was using my MPB the display would suddenly lose resolution so it looked like there were many vertical lines.  text would become very jagged and difficult to read.  in excel, some of the cell/column borders would not appear.
the problem would usually resoved if i moved or if the computer slept, all would return to normal.
today i booted up and the display looked immediately like crap (same probem) and has not changed regardelss of how much moving, sleeping or restarting i seem to do.
i can hook it up to an external montior and it looks fine.  i get no hardware failure reports at start up.  dislplay info is:

      Online:          Yes
      Built-In:          Yes
    Display Connector:
      Status:          No Display Connected
Could this be an internal display cable problem like i had on my G4 model?  i would think if it was the graphics card, it would do it to both the internal display and the external display.
this is what i am seeing now at 1440x900.

    update:
the motherboard is gone and not worth the repair costs.  i purchased a new MPB.  this one, i may just hook up to a monitor so the kids can use it or part it out.

  • MBP bought in USA in 2012, now in Canada, no receipt. If something happens, is it still covered by the warranty?

    Title.
    Thanks!

yes.  apple canada will cover your macbook.
i've taken my macbook for service without being asked for a receipt.
they check your serial number to see if it's still under warranty before they perform any work needed.
It is however, a good idea if you can find your receipt.  just in case.
    good luck...

  • Purchasing a 2011 new or refurb iMac vs new 2012?

    Hi All,
It is time to finally upgrade my old iMac. I waited for the new 2012 model to come out. Now that I have read up on it and see there is no cd/dvd optical drive(which I use quite a bit) I wonder if I am better off trying to find a mid 2011 iMac as they still have it built in?
Would the Apple stores still have the 2011 model? I know I can by a stand alone optical drive but questioning which way would be the better option.
    Thanks in Advance.

Another reason I would go for a refurb is if the glass on the new machine gets damaged its a whole new screen, and that is glued to the body as mentioned. The previous model has a seperate glass (I think its glass) screen over the LCD display panel, and that can be removed with a suction cups, its only held on by magnets and thats going to be far quicker and easier than replacing a new 2012 models one. Also the fact that if you plug a USB 2 device into a USB 3 port first on the new 2012 iMacs they then become limited to USB 2 speeds is a bit odd and current iPads and iPhones are USB 2. Also the SD card slot is on the side under the optical drive, not on the back. I would personally go for a refurb mid 2011. If you find a i7 model the performnce difference would not be really that noticable in day to day use, dont let bragging rights or Geek Bench scores fool you, Ivy Bridge is more of an incremental update. Intels tick where as Sandy bridge was the Tock. The next worthwhile CPU upgrade will be Haswell.

Like the message in the notification states, you're seeing that update because you've likely got some other component that released along with LabVIEW RT 2012 - NI-RIO 12.0, WSN 1.4, or Fieldpoint 6.0.11.  The issue was to fix a specific problem in LabVIEW 2012 that affected RT, so if you don't have LabVIEW 2012 installed then the patch will neither be harmful nor helpful to you; however, NI-RIO, WSN, and Fieldpoint installer framework files for RT had to be updated to be compatible with the LabVIEW changes (and thus you likely have a component installed that has an update available, even if LabVIEW 2012 itself is not installed).

  • What is the difference in the 2011 ipod touch 4th gen and the 2012 4th gen?

Is there any difference in the ipod touch 4th generation that was made in 2011 and the one there is now? In other words is there anything new with the 4th generation now that the ipod touch 5th gen has been announced? I need a new ipod touch and don't know if I should shell out the extra $ for the 5th gen or just get the 4th gen that is $199 for 16gb.

Only you know whether it is worth it.  The main difference is a larger screen, Siri (when connected via wi-fi to the internet), and a 5 megapixel camera (the 4g has a 0.8mp camera)

Can you tell me why you don't think its a good buy? Someone bought it that must have thought it was a good buy? You?!!!
I had a macbook pro, spilled an entire latte on it. Cannot afford to drop another 1500 on a new one. I understand the air is a great machine. And for someone that is hard on equipment (aside from liquid!) with no moving parts its a better option. This one is priced at $929 - good?

  • 15" retina or 15" mbp (2011)

just picked up a canon 7d and use a 27" apple led (non-thunderbold).  i use a 13" aluminum macbook (not pro) and going through the large images on the screen can take some time.  editing pics in iphoto can be a chore and i'm looking into purchasing aperture.  13" specs are 4gb ram, 7200 rpm HDD.
this is my first dslr and just starting out w/ viewing/editing raw photos.  i have an older 15" mbp that i was curious if it will work ok w/ these images.  problem is it's 5400 rpm HDD and so i'm probably going to swap in the HDD from the 13".  also, i believe this mbp's ram maxes out at 8gb.  will 8gb be enough?
do you think it's worth it to upgrade to the 15" retina?  if so, will 8gb be enough?  or should i get a bto w/ 16gb ram?  i had a terrible experience ordering my iphone 5 online and i'm hesitant to order from apple online again, which is why i'd rather purchase in the store.  long story short, it took 1 month and several calls on the phone w/ apple to get my refund for the iphone 5, yet couldn't get a new iphone b/c i had to wait for them to refund my money and reverse my upgrade.
i just for the life of me, wonder why they don't stock any 16gb ram retina's in the store...but i digress...
just some background, i'm just starting out w/ photography and picked it up as a hobby.  trying to find out which is a good (not too pricey) software to organize and edit photos.  some magazine i read suggested aperture.

I've been (amongst other things) a semi-pro photographer in my life and although now I just pursue it part-time annd as a hobbiest, I think that I've adjusted well to using RAW image files (love Lightroom - have never tried Aperture) and a real computer workflow for my photography.
I have a late 2011 15" MBP purchased in March of 2012 and I love it. Wouldn't even consider moving to a Retina model at this time. I also have the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display, calibrated using a Spyder4Elite, that I use 90% of the time so, for me, the Retina display would just be a waste.
The nice thing about the non-Retina models is that you can upgrade to 16GB yourself, as well as replace the HD with a larger HD or an SSD. I've 16GB of RAM installed and various Thunderbolt, FW800 and USB drives attached. The only problem that I forsee with the 27" Cinema Display model is that you're going to have to 'give up' the single TB port on the non-Retina model for your Display. With the Retina model, you have two TB ports and you could use one for your display and the other for TB drives, hubs, etc.
If I were you, I'd look closely at both the specs of both machines, the upgradeability of both machines and a side-by-side comparison of both at an Apple Store. There are pros and cons of each, for you.
    Good luck on your quest!
    Clinton
