MBP 13" Aug 2009 Lion freezes during startup

Just wondering if anybody else is having this problem.  I just upgraded to Lion from Snow Leapord.  I now am having issues with my computer freezing right after start up.  It will only do this after it appears to boot everything up, however it will just sit there and the cursor turns into the spining rainbow.  It just started happening after i installed lion.
I bought this computer in August of 2009.  I seems to only do this when I have it try to reopen all windows after restart, weather I have anything open or not.  I have to hold down the power button and try it again, usually 2-3 times and it will be alright.
Anybody else having this issue?  Is there anything I can do to fix this?  Hopefully it is a known issue with Apple and they will resolve it.  This computer has been great!  Never once had any freeze or anything until now.
Thanks in advance
Brian

Thanks guys, I have 4 GB of Ram and 368 out of 500 Gigs of free HDD space.  I called the Apple care guys, AMAZING SERVICE, just amazing.  We ran through some tests, created a temp login, the problem went away with that. I the ran the disk utility.  Verified the disk, repaired during start up using the recovery HD.  Then repaired the disk permissions.  Problem is fixed.  I have rebooted several times and have not had a hang up yet.  So I think during that night I updated to lion, i also updated i life 11 as well.  So I think something just got messed up a bit.
So all is well.  And I am happy again!
Thanks for the replies

  • Freeze during startup after SW update from 10.4 - 10.4.8

After updating to 10.4.8, my machine would freeze during startup (at the gray screen with the apple and spinner) and give me the "Please restart your computer" message in a few languages.
I thought it might be a RAM issue, so I removed all third party RAM - same problem.
I replaced all of the RAM with RAM from another G5 that I know worked - same problem
I moved the HD from my G5 to another G5 that was working - same problem (I believe that eliminates the motherboard and any other components from being the problem).
I thought that the HD might be bad, so I replaced it with a brand new SATA drive, installed 10.4 and it worked perfectly, ran all of the SW updates (including the combined 10.4.8 update) and I get the same freezing again when I reboot.
    Any suggestions are appriciated!

    Hi Joe,
Welcome to the only place where you can get friendly advice.
Ok have you tried starting up from the installer / restore CD that came with the mac and run disk utility??
Try hardware test doing the extended test in a loop to try and find the base of the Kernel panic (thats what the "you need to restart your computer" image indicates)
For info and guidance on Kernel panics see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
    and trouble shooting info:

for extensive advice on solving the kernel panics see:

Worst case senario it could be the G5 processors, make sure you have applecare; just in case it gets expensive!!

  • Computer freezes during startup

My Mac book pro. Freezes during startup.  Spinning wheel goes for about 15 seconds, then just stops.  Any ideas?

Ok, I tried that and it didn't help, but thanks for the suggestion anyway because device drivers are always a pain in this.
Then I started looking for log file changes because I suspected that something (related) ought to be logged about this nagging bug. The witch hunt directed me towards the google updater agent -- whatever -- that got stuck on bringing chrome to the latest level.
I read all sort of incompatibilities between google chrome and macbooks, this could be another one. I downloaded the latest version of chrome manually, overwrote the existing implementation of chrome and the freeze-up seemed to vanish.
    Not so nice this all.

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • Freeze during startup

During startup, the system freezes (no cursor, no keys).
It boots as far as the "Log On to Windows" screen. The cursor still moves, and then it stops after perhaps 30 seconds
    (keys non-functional too),
Tried the rescue and recovery but when it gets to Step 1 with choices including "Restore my gard drive to the original factory state" everything freezes again.
Prior to this problem the system would hang during shutdown.
How do I get past this point?
    (T43 with XP sp3)

    Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like a failing SouthBridge chip to me.
Try removing the hard drive and booting from a "live" Linux CD.
If you experience the same type of freezing there, you're likely looking at a motherboard swap.
    Good luck.

    George

  • Hello, My Imac is freezing during startup.

It chimes and bigins loading. The spinning circle freezes after a few moments. It is able to boot in safe mode. Using command v during startup this is the last line displayed "GFX8: family specific matching fails". Also, this Imac has the infamous overheating graphics card problem.

Have you attempted Disk Repair in Utilities? Are you still using 10.5.8 as your profile suggests?
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Freeze during startup if magic trackpad not available

Down in SF last week and bought a magic trackpad and installed it. worked fine.
Got home and turned on my MBP; it froze during startup with only the finder window open, no dock, and not much else. mouse pointer couldn't click on things, etc. I tried restarting and restarting into my test (bare bones) account. No luck.
Then I wondered if the problem was that my new magic trackpad was there and turned on. That was the problem. As soon as I got the trackpad and turned it on, my system completed normal startup.
Anyone else have this experience. This seems like a bug.

Today I tried to replicate my problem and couldn't. Either by turning off the trackpad before I shut down or else while my computer was off.
So apparently my incident was an isolated one.

  • Mountain lion freezes during installation with 34 mins remaining

    Hi all,
My upgrade to mountain lion (from lion) freezes almost immediately when it hits the 'install os x' screen. It shows only the smallest possible progress in the progress bar and time remaining is stuck at 'about 34 minutes'. My mbp bought in 2010 rumbles as if doing something, but has been making this sound with no apparent progress for over 45 mins now. How do i get out of this freeze situation?
    Thanks!
    Mark

    Follow-up:
Ok, after more than an hour 'time remaining' changed to 33 minutes and 15 mins later to 28. The progress bar also started showing progress. Strangely enough it then changed back to 31 mins and less progress (but at least it started showing something). Just hope this is not an indication the the new os has lost the ability to tell time...

  • Lion freezes during Time Machine restore

Crashed my Mac and had Apple restore OSX.  Upgraded go Lion and started restoring my data from a WD hard drive connected using a USB cable.  I'm finding that I can restore my JPEG images, but Lion freezes if there is a quicktime file included in the restore and I have to force a shut down.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I am having the same issue.   Time Machine backup to Time Capsule starts then freezed the OS and a hard machine reset is all that will work.  My machines with Snow Leopard do not have this problem.. This is causing me a lot of problems and no one at Apple seems to know or care why this is happening...

  • New MBP 15 retina (mid 2014) freeze during initial setup - any issues?

Hi all - just picked up a new retina MBP 15 base model (integrated graphics / 256GB / 16 GB RAM).  After turning it on for the first time and running the initial setup the computer froze on the diagnostics and usage page (after I clicked continue).  I had also setup an account and named the computer.  After about 25 minutes of seeing a spinning beach ball, I held down the power button for a hard shut down.  I turned it back on and it went through the initial setup process without issue (although I had to create a different user account since the previous one was recognized).  The computer was pre-loaded with Yosemite and I immediately updated the software with the latest patch.  Also, I noticed both user accounts I had made were stored, so I deleted the first one that I created during the failed setup.
Should this be a cause for concern?  Everything seems to be working properly outside of the initial setup freeze.  Have any other users experienced this?  Also, I had thought the macbook would have had Mavericks on it and that a manual upgrade to Yosemite would have been required.  Is this an issue with Yosemite?  Apologies for several questions in one post.

    Hi there again.
I didn't had any of the problems you mentioned (45' minutes setup). We tried along with AppleCare to make a new partition to the hard disk in order to install OS in that one and boot the machine from it. It didn't help as the machine didn't let me to make a partition. Later on we swiped the hard disk and at the moment where you choose the hard disk to install OS, there wasn't any to choose. Returned the machine to the store I bought it and they sent it to the authorized service center where they told me that the machine just didn't have any OS installed.
I asked them why there isn't any hard disks available and they told that there was a problem to the file sector of the hard disk. They repaired it and they sent the machine back to me. Regarding why the machine came with Mavericks and not with Yosemite, I suppose that they had the machine in stock (knowing that Yosemite was released after the MBP mid-2014).
There are still some problems I don't like at all. Safari - opened pdf in browser - fully loaded, scrolling down...cracks.
I'm not happy at all. That was my first purchase on Apple's computers and I don't know if I will do it again.
By the way, I noticed the same performance in other computers as well. (click on "About this Mac", then click on "Overview, Displays, Storage" etc. There, I see cracks on graphics between the change to other tabs.)

  • IMac freezing during startup

So I was working on my iMac the other day and all of a sudden the screen went blank (grey screen). Turned it off using the power button and restarted it. I get the chime and the apple logo coming up with the scrolling wheel below but then the screen goes blank and I can't get any further than that.
Have tried booting up in safe mode (Shift), verbose (Cmd+V), starting in Recovery System (Cmd+R), Single User Mode (Cmd+S) and resetting the NVRAM/PRAM (Option + Cmd + P + R). Nothing has worked. Always get to the apple logo and scrolling wheel only to freeze on a gray screen after that.
Can't find my Install Disc but have tracked one down that I'm going to try tomorrow.
Besides the Install Disc does anyone have any suggestions that could help me out? Only have a portion of my HD backed up (stupid I know) so really hoping this issue is solveable and that I can salvage what I have on that computer.
    Thanks!!

Try booting while holding down the Option key.
Theoretically that should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
The original install disc cannot repair the startup disk on a Mac running v10.7 Lion. Only OS X Recovery

  • My MacBook keeps freezing during startup

I got my MacBook Pro in 2012. Currently, it keeps freezing while I try to turn it on. I get the apple logo and the spinning wheel, and eventually it freezes. I've tried starting in safe mode and it froze. I've tried recovery, it "restarts due to a problem during start up" and then freezes again. When it freezes, there are little green pixels on the screen as well.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

... and i have no idea what else to do :?
Return that RAM and buy either the Crucial ram (http://www.crucial.com) for your system or buy from OWC (http://www.macsales.com). I've used Cruical ram in many systems over the years with no issues, and have bought Samsung (factory fill) from OWC with no issues either.

  • Lightroom 4.2 freezing during startup

My Lightroom starting freezing recently.  It says the program is not responding. I was on the phone with Tech Support two days ago.  They re-loaded the program and I re-imported the catalog and it worked as usual, but today again the same problem surfaced; upon startup of the program it locks up and if I click anywhere in the Lightroom window it says the program is not responding and whites out moments later a Window's message says the  program is not responding giving me choices of "Close the program" or wait till it responds, which it never does.  I see others that are having a smiliar issue with 4.2 . I have a Gareway computer with Windows 7 64 bit  How do I fix this and why is it happening over and over?
    Thanks

What else is connected to your computer?  Network or external drives?  Printers with card readers?  Or the main cause at the moment - phones?

  • CS6 Freezes during startup at Measuring Memory

I am new to this forum, so not sure where to post this.
When I click on the icon to start Photoshop CS6, it freezes at "Measuring Memory".
I tried to uninstall Photoshop but the uninstall will not work.  I tried to reinstall with the disk but Windows will not start the setup file.
I also ran scans on viruses and it turned up negative.
Does Photoshop have a repair program?
    From the PC properties:
    Windows 8.1
