MBP 13" bag recommendations needed?

What bag would be a good fit for the MacBook Pro 13"? I'd also have the MBP inside the Incase neoprene sleeve, so it would need to fit into the case.
Also, suitable pocket-space for a 2.5" external hard drive, power cables, network cable, etc.

17" Early 2011 MBP - Hard Drive Upgrade Needed

I need to upgrade my MBP's hard drive so that I have more storage. I currently have 750 GB and I want at least 1.5 TB. While an SSD would be nice, one that large would be a bit pricey for me. I have been seeing some hydrid drives that look interesting. They seem to vary in size on the SSD side but on the HDD side they never seem to go over 1 TB. For example, one I saw had 120 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD for about $185. But I'm thinking long term - I do photography and create music and I have a large media collection - so while everything might fit fine now on that drive, I'm going to need more space eventually. Can someone please recommend some models I should consider? I might bypass the whole SSD just to get a bigger drive, even a 2 TB drive if that's an option. Not sure if that would fit in my laptop though. Thanks in advance for your help.

Toshiba and HGST have HDDs from 1.5 to 3 TBs for notebooks.

OT: Camera Day Bag Recommendations.

I'm in the market for a new day bag for my dSLR. Just needs to include the camera + lens, flash, a couple of filters, memory cards and somewhere to hang a tripod.
Oh yes - some space for a beer and some sandwiches would be nice :-)
I've looked at the Lowepro Slingshot series so far.

I already have a smallish Billingham bag which is good quality but they only seem to do Shoulder Bags and I find these a little 'hard' on the neck/shoulder.
I also have a Lowepro Computrekker which is comfortable and great for packing up everything including my laptop but if I turn around suddenly it's liable to take out a few trees and passers by. Also a little slow to get the camera out.

There are many choices when it comes to camera bags, and deciding on what one meets your needs really depends on a few different things. I first suggest thinking about what type of environment you will be using the camera in. If you are going to be trekking all over the world, and exposing the camera to harsh conditions, I would suggest getting at least a durable water resistant bag. If you're going to use the camera primarily in your home and occasionally take it out of the house you could probably get by with a less durable bag that isn't water resistant. The next thing you should consider is do you anticipate carrying a lot of lenses, and accessories with you, or will it primarily be just the camera with a lens on it.
The four types of camera bags are a hard case, backpack, shoulder bag, and what's called a holster style bag. Hard cases are more for checking the camera when you travel, while a backpack would be used if you would be traveling on foot with a large amount of equipment. The shoulder bag is the most common, because it allows you to carry a good amount of equipment without being cumbersome. The holster style bag holds just the camera body with a lens attached, but they usually are limited to what size lens will fit in it.
There are a few bags I found that I feel would work well for this camera package, but by no means are these your only options. There is a shoulder bag that is made by Canon for their EOS series of cameras, and they also make a good holster style bag. If you are in need of a lot of room, and would like a backpack style bag Lowepro makes a good backpack. I hope this is helpful!

Quick help: Taking MBP in for repair, need to lock folders?

hey guys,
I'm supposed to drop my MBP off at an Apple Reseller today to replace the disc drive. They want me to drop it off today, but the replacement drive won't be here until tomorrow. They asked that I provide my user password so they can login and get everything installed. It didn't sound like I had an option on whether or not to give them my password. So it looks like they'll be in my account, but I'm wondering if there's a way to lock my user folder and maybe Mail so that they can't go pilfering through my stuff. Any thoughts?

It's not Apple staff; if it were, I wouldn't be going through the trouble. This is a stand-alone Apple reseller and the only reason I'm going through the trouble is that they wanted me to drop my laptop off on the afternoon before they actually receive the drive.
If they would have said, "we'll order the drive on Monday, it'll get here Tuesday morning, so drop off your laptop Tuesday at lunch and we can have it back to you that evening or Wednesday morning" I'd have no questions. However, they originally wanted me to leave it with them right then (on Saturday) when the drive wasn't going to be there 'til Tuesday, and impressed upon me that they needed it no later than Monday afternoon.
So, no I don't have any questions about Apple Staff, but when a stand-alone reseller wants my laptop 3 days before they can actually repair it... yeah, I've got questions about that.
Oh, and I did check out the Apimac application. It looks pretty cool, but, I think I'll just go with setting up a Repair Account and leave it at that. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

How do you host your external videos for good interactive PDF playback? Recommendation needed.

I'm trying to find out a good solution for adding externally hosted video content to an interactive PDF.
I understand that Vimeo/YouTube is out so I'm hoping to host content with a dedicated (payed service) video host.
Does anyone have a recommendation of a good video host for this purpose or indeed any tips/pitfalls in doing it this way?
The document needs to be lightweight so I can't embed videos.

The also have a program called iPartition that does non-destructive partitioning very well. Coriolis Systems seems to do an excellent job writing their software in a way that respects OS X. Check out their website for a demo and a list of features.
I use the online defrag (it's quick and easy) once a week or so, and every three weeks or month I run a full defrag. To do a full defrag you need to either start up from another drive with iDefrag on it (I use my external Firewire drive) or burn a CD using the included utility to start up from.
I've been very impressed with this software and have found it invaluable for installing BootCamp on some laptops that had fairly full HDs where otherwise Boot Camp would say it couldn't partition.
iDefrag also optimizes the order of files on the disk and places metadata at the start of the drive for quick access. You can specify or create custom optimization algorithims if you have particular needs that vary from the norm.

MBP 13" womens case needed any ideas?

it's for a gift for my wife... I was going to get a simple silicone case but I realized we travel a lot and she would need something she can carry with shoulder strap or handle..., the typical black leather cases are too masculine...
Anyone have any other ideas? not looking to spend too much......

Printer Recommendation Needed

My husband needs a new low-end desktop Mac, and I have a MacBook. We share a printer connected to his desktop now, but he is unhappy with his inkjet printer and wants something better with his new system.
Any recommendations for a laser - black and white or color - to connect to his new iMac and to wirelessly network to my MacBook? Both will be using 10.5.x.

I have a Samsung SCX-4500, a black and white laser printer that works well with Leopard. I've been able to connect to it also over my AEBS. You can probably get the same functionality out of their lower end model that doesn't include the scanner. Both are available on the Apple Store on line.

Docking/Charger station with speakers--recommendations needed.

I am looking for a docking station/ charger with speakers for my son. He has an iPad mini and an iPhone 4. I need a station that will charge even with the case on. Any recommendations?

The iPod 4 and iPad Mini use different connection types, so its unlikely you'll be able to find a dock with both types.
Perhaps your best bet is to find a dock tha has 2 or more 30 pin connectors and use the Lightning to 30 pin adapter from Apple for the iPad Mini.
Or find a Universal powerd USB Hub and use that to charge the devices.
As it stands there doesn't seem to be a device that can charge both types of devices and then have speakers.

Replace HD -where and who? Recommendations needed

Well, since my earlier post, installed Tiger in hopes of fixing problem but looks like HD is dead. Got tiger installed, transferred files/apps/settings from backup HD and started updating software.
Now HD making all sounds of scratching and squeaky noises and won't boot.
So, anyone recommend third party to replace HD. Don't need anything fancy, 60 gb 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm will do. And estimated cost?

Note if you go to an Apple store, they will keep your old drive, however, since you have it backed up already, and can still erase it, that shouldn't be a concern.
You might as well get a slightly larger drive, as 5400rpm 60GB and 80GB, depending on brand, are about the same price ($50-$60). 7200rpm version would be around $20 more. If you have a choice, people seem satisfied with Seagate and Hitachi. Avoid Toshiba. Installation of course on top of HD cost. You may not have as many HD choices at an Apple store versus using an Apple authorized service provider.
It may or may not be cheaper for you to buy the drive and take it to an authorized service provider for installation. Newegg at http://www.newegg.com and OWC at http://www.macsales.com are two good sources. You'd be looking for a 2.5" notebook drive, with a parallel ATA attachment, not serial ATA or SATA (drives are well marked in the descriptions). If you buy it yourself, regardless of who installs it, you'd get the manufacturer warranty, so, for example, Seagate has a 5 year warranty. If Apple sells and installs it, you get whatever Apple warranty provides.

Extender and networked hd recommendations needed

Looking for some recommendations. I'm using more and more devices at the far end of the house, away from the one cable connection coming into the modem (old house, and we rent, so not changing that). I have a 500g elderly seagate hooked up as a network drive to the time capsule, but just got a 2tb raid LaCie. What I'd like to do is to leave the LaCie in my office (NOT by the seagate and time capsule in the living room), and to, at the same time, repeat the wireless signal from the office back to the house's dead zone. I'm running a WPA secured network and would like to stick with tried and true (preferably apple) products.i have a MacBook In the office, but it's not always on. Need to run an Xbox, iPad, 2 iPhones, and MacBook off of this repeater (preferably on the inexpensive side). Does airport express fit the bill, or do you all have other suggestions? An airport express will work as a repeater and the ethernet port still work.. but the range is not great. And wireless repeating halves the throughput at least and often worse.
If you cannot run ethernet which is fair enough in a rented place.. then try using EOP adapters. That gives you a link which is reliable and since it isn't wireless will not slow the connection at the other end. Then you can use an AEBS or even another TC in bridge and setup for roaming. This is easy and will give full speed at the other end plus give you 3 gigabit ports to attach stuff.

Recording Headset Recommendations Needed

Hi everyone:
I currently use Captivate to record CBT's, complete with
recorded audio. I have been using a Plantronics headset (very
similar to the Plantronics Audio 650 USB Multimedia Stereo Headset)
and while it has been a great headset, the quality of the
microphone is slowly fading away.
In my building, we have a significant amount of "white" noise
from the air system, causing a "buzzing" sound throughout the
building. While you cannot directly hear the buzzing, you can
distinctively hear when you stop a recording and start another
one-the recordings are not 100% quiet in the background so when
users play the CBT back, they can hear when the tutorial starts and
ends due to the background noise.
Does anyone have a headset they recommend with a good
background noise silencer that also records the voice in a clear
manner, avoiding the dreaded "p and b" sounds that sound so abrupt
in the microphone?

To avoid the 'pops' (like on b and p), you definitely want to
1) ensure
the microphone has a baffle (the little sponge surrounding
it) and to
move the microphone further away from your mouth. That may,
of course,
mean you will need to enunciate more clearly.
I use an old Logitech headset. I don't recall the model but
it works
well. I do have to run a couple short tests first to get the
mic setup a
proper distance and angle from my mouth (I usually have it
angled down
by my chin).
Most often, we just have a professional narrator do the
voiceovers then
integrate them separately, ensuring quality.
For your ambient room noise, not much you can do about that
regardless
of the mic. In fact, the higher-quality a mic, the more of
that noise it
may pick up!
So, best case, you find a room where you can shut off the air
ducts, or
one that doesn't have any air ducts.
But another interesting approach I think I saw mentioned here
was
someone who constructed a box insulated with packing foam
that they put
over their head! Sounds funny but with a large enough box,
perhaps
fitting over the monitor and yourself, you could probably
cancel out a
lot of the ambient noise.

Java Book - Recommendations Needed.

Recommendations for a good BEGINNERS book please.

If you're completely new to programming then I'd suggest checking out some of the older books on first principles that they'll have available in your college library.
This kind of foundation will massively reduce the learning curve for any language.
Then hit the 2nd hand bookstores and find an earlier edition of one of the books mentioned above. All the marketing crap claiming that a new edition is completely updated is irrelevant to your needs. The core language has changed very little in about 6 years, (since the abortion that was the 1.0 event model was justifiably taken out behind the chemical sheds and shot), so anything 1.1 and onwards will suffice as long as you can get access to the errata pages on the web.
Of course, the best approach is simply to use the free resources on this and other sites because the programming manuals aren't overly useful to students entering the field for the first time. I say this because you'll probably be looking at two types of task:
1) Practical programming (probably so simplistic that you'll be able to solve with reference to the API docs)
2) Theoretical stuff (Better to look to academic books, trade journals, etc.)

Phone Recommendations Needed!

Hey everyone,
So, I'm looking for a new phone! I've got a Nokia 3330 which though long-wearing is starting to look super dated. I'm basically looking for advice from anyone here - I need any recommendations to have the following features;
1) Works with iSync - either it can be properly added as a device, or it is at least recognised as a phone and contacts can be synced,
2) Is a flipphone - because I like them,
3) Photo caller ID would be nice, but not essential,
Cameras/MP3/etc doesn't really bother me either way, especially if it affects the price. So, any takers?

Motorola E815 has all of the above, but it's probably already been replaced by something newer--I got mine about several months ago when it first came out. There is a list of phones that are Bluetooth enabled and Mac compatible someplace on the Apple site, but I've forgotten where. And the E815 is a Verizon version; different carriers, different phones.

Hi,
I wish to evaluate xMAM for Utilities 7.0 SR1. In that I specifically want to look at
1. GIS/GPS integration.
2. Push messages.
3. RFID capabilities.
Based on my understanding I have realised that I need a device which has
1. Windows Mobile 5.0 (Arcpad which is required for GIS is not supported on Windows Mobile 6.0)
2. GPS receiver
3. Minimum 64MB RAM (128 MB is desirable).
4. ARM/XScales/Samsung S3C processor.
5. Minimum 2GB flash memory.
I had shortlisted on the following series of devices
1. HP iPAQ hw6940/hw6945 Mobile Messenger
2. The Hp iPAQ rx5900
Please help me with the recommended devices/comments on the devices I mentioned above.

I feel that the HTC Advantage (Athena)- (Also Known as T-Mobile Ameo) or the HTC TYTN II (Kaiser) - (Also Known as T- Mobile MDA Vario III, AT&T Tilt) should fit the bill.
