MBP 13" died and won't respond.

My MBP (bought mid 2010) died this morning (the effect was as if I had held down the power button to shut down) while I was using it as normal and now won't respond at all. Battery is holding charge as indicated by the lights and tried 2 chargers which appear to work fine. Suggestions? Cheers

Valuable lesson learned - on notebooks, in particular, AppleCare can more than pay for itself. Sorry you had such a bad experience: computers (all and any brands) can go belly-up at any time. I had a 2006 MBP and it's still running somewhere in Minnesota. But all aren't that lucky.
If you need your particular machine, then the £400 is likely well spent. But you always have the option of putting that £400 towards the purchase of a new machine. And if you do that, get AppleCare next time.
I'm sympathetic but I've just been one of those lucky few who in 27 years of owning Macs have had no hardware problems...

    Help, please.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • My middle button seems stuck and won't respond. Help?

My middle button for the iPhone 3GS seems stuck or sticky and won't respond. Voice control keeps popping up because the iPhone thinks I am pushing the middle button to make it do the voice control. Any advice on what to do?

    stoughie,
I'm sorry to hear that your phone is having data and power issues. That's never awesome! smashogre had a great tip, too. I hope it has worked for you. If not, I do recommend an alternative reset to return the phone to the factory settings. If after these steps, it still isn't functioning properly, please direct message me so I can assist you further.
    Thank you,

So you already wiped the old backup and started again??
If that is the case it did a fresh full backup ok?
How much free space is on the TC now?
Do you happen to have multiple network links? Meaning do you have TC bridged to the U-verse router.. with both ethernet and wireless working at the same time. I discovered this one all by my loansome.. having multiple paths does not seem to worry most things on the computer.. but it totally kills TM.
I had the same sort of thing happening in testing a TC I am fixing. So I have multiple ethernet and wireless. The incremental backups became extremely slow.. by turning off wireless and one ethernet so there is only one route to the TC.. it flys again.

When I click on a story on yahoo news my iPad freezes up and won't respond to anything?

First thing to try is a reset: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • Can anyone explain to me why sometimes my ipad2 locks up and won't respond to any input from the keyboard.

My iPad 2 locks up sometimes and won't respond to any input from the keyboard. Have to reboot in order to fix the problem.

    You have 3 choices:
    1. Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears, ignore the Slide to Power Off that appears)
Note: You will not lose any data.
    2. Restore from backup using iTunes
    3. Restore as new without the backup

That's what I figured from what I've been reading. Will have to see what the cost might be and if it's a worthwhile investment considering the age of the computer.
You can get a first-gen Mac Pro on eBay for around $300. It can run OS 10.4 through 10.7. Something to consider, depending on the cost of a logic board and the hassle of replacing it. You transfer your existing drives, as long as you have a spare external drive. You would clone your G5 drives to the external drive as disk images, then move the G5 drives to the Mac Pro, re-format them GUID, and clone back the contents from the disk images on the external. I did this recently when I retired my G5.

    - See:

    - Try another cable
    - Try another charging source
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, cracked or broken plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

I tried double tapping my home button and swiped to the right but did not help me. I am trying to straighten my message page that is stuck sideways and won't respond to shaking or turning phone around. What else can I do?

Restart iPhone: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for phone to restart (no data will be lost).

  • My iPhone5c died and won't come back to life

Last night I forgot to plug my iPhone in and in the morning it was dead.. But now whenever I try to plug it in, it just stays dead and won't show anything on the screen at all.. I left it plugged in for a few hours and I tried holding the home and power button down for 2 minutes, but I've only gotten the screen that tells me that my iPhone is dead.. But after a few seconds that screen goes black too. I know it's not my charger because it worked on my sister's phone perfectly. HELP!

  • MBP shuts down and won't start up

I had my MBP for 2 months and it just started to act weird. For no reason, it randomly shuts down with no warning (just like if you would disconnect the battery) and won't even start up again (I had half of the start up sound then nothing). After a couple of more tries, it should startup again but soon things will go bad... Any idea what is going on ?

Sounds like a bad battery and/or problem with the PMU (power management unit) and/or memory.
"Half the start up sound" is a bad sign as it means it's failing the normal start up tests (I'd guess a Memory problem)
Reset the PMU and run the Hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at startup) and see what it reports.
