MBP 13" does not sleep when plugged in and wifi on

Hello,
I have a new MBP 13'  core i7 @ 2.9Ghz  -750Gb HDD.
My mbp does not want to sleep when it is plugged in and wifi is on.  I close the lid and nothing happens.
On the other hand, if WiFi is off or the mbp is simply not plugged in, I close the lid and it goes to sleep.
Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this ?
Thanks,

  • MBB Does Not Sleep When Lid Shut

My macbook does not sleep when I shut the lid. This happened recently after I had my fan repaired. I also updated the OS at the same time, so I'm not sure which triggered the problem.
I would have to manually select sleep before shutting the lid; and I would have to press the space bar after I've opened the lid to wake it.
The following thread applies to a MBP. Apparently my problem might be a faulty latch.

I've reseted my PRAM, but that didn't work. My machine has been in for repairs 4 times (Fan, Logic Board, and the top case has been replaced twice due to cracks).
I'm wondering if I should send it back to the service centre to have it looked at. Apparently, if this is not a hardware problem, it won't be covered under AppleCare, and I would be charge. So just want to make sure...

I tried doing this fix using the guide on http://ifixit.com to dismantle my MacBook and find the battery/lid detector cable which indeed seemed loose at its connector just next to the headphone jack, but when I reassembled the mac still does not detect lid closing and now it doesn't even detect the battery anymore! Yikes! Looks like a trip to the apple store is required anyway.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

You need to connect to iTunes and restore.
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
You may need to put the device into recovery mode, this is covered in the link on this page.
Did you back up the device?

  • X120e does not sleep when lid closed

I found another similar post, however it was resolved by the individual reinstalling the operating system.
My issue is more complicated. I have made sure everything is up to date, all the settings that tell the system to sleep when the lid is closed are turned on. I have even turned those settings off off, just so I could turn them back on to make sure there wasn't something quirky about it.
I have tried restoring the system to factory settings using the recovery partition, as well as discs burned from the program that came with the computer. I have tried clean install from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 discs.
The unit still does not sleep. I don't ever remembering it being able to. I once closed the display thinking it would sleep (power was plugged in). Woke up the next day, went to work for 8 hours, came back and felt that the system was really hot. Opened the lid and the screen was exactly as I had left it the day before.
When I first got the system in 2012, the screen did not work, so I actually had to send it to Atlanta, GA for repairs. It came back quickly, and it still did not work, so I actually sent it back to Atlanta, GA's repair center a second time in the same week. It came back working and I left it alone. I never tested the sleep/wake because I always just turned the system off when I was done with it, but now I am back in school and this little computer comes in handy, but I don't want to turn off the system manually going from class to class when I need to pack it away in my bag.
Could there be a hardware issue? Something inside not connected? This laptop works perfectly EXCEPT for the fact that it will not sleep when the lid is closed. It is out of warranty but had I known this was an issue while it was still under warranty, I would have inquired. This unit is in pretty fantastic shape, looks brand new too. No damage, never been dropped, and only ever handled by me (never loaned out).
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks for the reply, gat0gelat0.
Yes, those settings were the first things I checked. I also tried changing it to "Do nothing", then changing back to the sleeping option. It still does nothing when I close the lid.
I would like the functionality of it going to sleep when I close the lid for the convenience, like when class ends, I have to rush to my next class, I just want to close the lid, put it in my bag and run to the next class. Keyboard shortcuts like Fn-F4 work, but this laptop should have the functionality I am describing, and I want to figure out why it isn't working and how to fix it.
I suspect there is an issue with whatever is used hardware wise to sleep the machine. Either it's not being triggered, or it's not there, or it's broken. I've tried running a magnet around the bezel of the LCD screen as well as around the palm rest bezel and there is no activity as I've read that many laptops trigger sleep by interaction by a magnet. Still nothing.

  • HT1776 MacBook does not sleep when closed

I have a Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro running Mavericks.  Sometimes when I close the lid, it does not sleep or turn off the display, even after the set time in Energy Saver preferences.  My main concern is that I have my security settings set to lock my computer 5 seconds after sleep/turning off the display, and this does not happen, as it does not go to sleep.  The only way I notice is that when I open the computer some time later, the screen is already on and it is not locked.  There are no periphials connected when this happens.

  • Does not sleep when I close the lid...

Never encountered this before! I have 1 MacBook that works fine, but bought another today that will not sleep when I close the lid. It does sleep when I select it from the menu, but not when I shut it.
    Any ideas?

Mine recently started doing the same thing. Now everytime I want to go out with my computer I have to pack up the charger, even if I only end up using it for 15 minutes, because the battery is wasted by 2.5 hours.

  • Bue tooth is dead, and computer does not sleep when i close the screen now.

    OK
This is a on going issue:
1-I paid for apple care 4 days prior to the expiration of my one year agreement with purchase, they shipped it a day after it expired of course, and at first it rejected my serial number saying it was beyond the date,
2-i contacted Apple, they fixed this and after calling them again they repeated the same thing, i can not down load techtool deluxe.
3-However, i used iMac apple care kit to download the latest Techtool deluxe only to find out it is not Leopard Compatible,
Apple did it again with a new OS, releasing it with no coverage leaving us all sitting around like PC geeks !
Now after several incidents with blue-tooth on the phone with tech support, like been told i have to pay money if its the OS doing this instead of the hardware itself, i am a bit fed up here., blue-tooth is dead and my macbook does not sleep, i can even see iChat still on while the screen is closed!
I no longer have confidence i the idea of going back to Tiger on this computer will fix a bad logic board as i read others with the similar BT problem.
Can anyone advise what to do next please?

used original dvds and found BT, LEOPARD bugs caused the BT problems.

  • My IPad Retnia does not charge when plugged in using the USB from my computer to car adapter, how can I fix this to be able to have flexibility in charging?

When I plug me IPad into the USB connector to my laptop or into my car charger, it show as not charging. How can I fix this so that I can charge my Pad in these settings?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
And this - Unplug the charger from the iPad and then replug. May resume charging.
Or - Recalibrate the battery. See link below.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Macbook Pro 8.2 does not sleep when closing the led.

I have a macbook pro 8.2. When I close the led, it sleeps then wakes up immediately. I can't put it to sleep by closing the led becaus it will wakes up again. So, If I want to put it to sleep, I have to choose the sleep option from apple menu. I am affraid that it is a hardware problem, something wrong in the sensors.

Since this is a 8.2 MBP it is fairly new, I have an 8.2, it has still got a lot of the original 1 year warranty left on it.
Just how do you know it is not going to sleep when you close the lid? Does the monitor not turn off? Does the sleep light on the front not come one and then slowly go out and come on again (flash slowly) when you close the lid?
If the screen doesn't turn off or the sleep light doesn't come on and then flash slowly you need to take it in to get it fixed ASAP.
If those things are happening, the screen turns off and the sleep light comes on then goes out then back on slowly, the MBP is actually in sleep mode. Even if once you open the lid it comes right back to life wvwn if it doesn't ask for your password. This is a setting in system preferences.

  • Powerbook does not sleep when the lid is closed

my tibook does not go to sleep when i close the lid. the screen stays on when the lid is closed. the screen was replaced a few months ago. i have to hit the power button and choose sleep or choose sleep from the menu. does anyone know how to fix this. Thanks.

Hi, fatchance. You have a hardware issue. The reed switch that puts the PB to sleep when it is closed is a two-part device. The latch mechanism in the main body of the Powerbook contains a magnet (which you can detect by moving a paper clip over it), and the switch itself is located inside the small latch opening in the display bezel. When the display is closed, the magnet is supposed to actuate the switch, putting the PB to sleep. If that isn't happening on your PB, the switch is broken or its wiring is damaged. Either way, the remedy will be to replace the entire display assembly. It's made not to be disassembled. Most technicians won't do so, because of the great likelihood of damaging the display housing/bezel or the display itself while prying it apart (it's epoxied together). Since the display is the PB's most costly part, replacing it merely to fix your reed switch would be a poor bargain, and I can't recommend it. Just put the PB to sleep manually or set a suitable sleep delay in the Energy Saver control pane instead.

  • Alum Powerbook 1ghz Does not Sleep when Lid is Closed

    Hi,
I have a 1ghz Aluminum Powerbook with the lower memory slot issue. Everything is working great (besides the memory issue of course), and this one other bug: When I close the lid, the powerbook does not go to sleep. I have to manually select "Sleep" for it to go to sleep. The sleep light comes on and all, but I guess it just doesn't recognize the display lid shut.
The sleep issue is not the biggest thing, but is this a sign of a bigger issue, like logic board failure? Or is it simply a sensor that is not recognizing the powerbook lid shut?
Please let me know. I'm really enjoying my "new" powerbook after selling my titanium.
    Thanks!
    Al Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4)   Dual G5 2.0 3gb 320gb 20 Cinema

    Hi Steve,
Hmm, the lid problem is interesting - if the Powerbook doesn't wake up from opening the lid, however, then it's most likely a sensor problem, which as you found has an easy workaround. YOu could always go to the Power Section of the System Profiler and seeing if the "wake on Clamshell open" and "Wake on Clamshell Closed" are set to Yes and No respectively. If they aren't those settings, then resetting the Power Management Unit might help, or just reset the PMU and see what happens (info here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449)
As far as I know, (which probably isn't much!) the memory slot issue is just annoying, and probably won't do much damage to your computer. However, (and probably what you don't want to hear!) when my computer suffered the problem 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the memory door seemed to be a little bit warmer than usual and the rest of the computer in general. So I took it to the Mac Genius in the Birmingham Apple Store and they had the logic board replaced. Now, it seems to be running at a normal temperature. But looking back on it now, the temperature change may have been just subjective - ah well, your mileage may vary.
