MBP 13" early 2001 bogging down with Lightroom 5

4gb of ram
std video card - 384mb
50gb free space on hd
no other apps open - it is a dog.
is it worth it to see a marked improvement in performance to upgrade the ram to 8 or 16gb?
Thanks

If your mbp is over 12 years old, it's time for a new computer - don't waste money on new ram for a computer that is so old.
More ram might make it go a little faster, but it probably won't make it go a lot faster.
Just my opinion - but you asked for it .
Cheers,
Rob

Lightroom 5.2 running Video (MOV) sometimes gets bogged down with dynamiclinkmediaserer.exe taking up 88% of the cpu time.  This was a bug in Lightroom 4.  When will it be fixed?

Running the script by python2 solves it for me:

  • Should I Sleep/Shut Down my Mbp 13" Early 2011 while travelling with motorcycles

    Hi
I used Mbp pro Early 2011
Everyday I travel a lot with motorcycle and always take my Mbp with me  ..
    My questions:
    1. What is the best thing to do if I often carry my Mbp on a motorcycle?
    2. Should I sleep/shutdown my Mbp while riding my bike?
    3. Is it okay if I often shutdown my Mbp or it will decrease the battery life?
I usually shutdown my Mbp each time I'm on the road with bike .. I'm afraid if I just put on sleep it will damage the Mbp because there's a lot of shock happening when you ride a bike
    Need advice
    Thanks

Is it okay if I often shutdown the Mbp (2 or 3 times a day) ?.. I travel a lot

  • Bogging down with large number of photos

I have over 115,000 (give or take a few 1000) photos in iPhoto at present. I primarily use it to organize photos so I can find them, make slideshows, and hope to eventually make photo books - they're our family history for the past 7 years or so. My iPhoto library is about 155 GB.
I'm running this on the iMac - bought a couple of months ago. 4GB RAM with a 1T HD.
My main grumble is that whenever iPhoto is open, my iMac bogs down. I frequently see the spinning wheel, beach ball, or whatever it's called, particularly when I have the iPhoto to the front and it's just starting up... (plus other times).
A local Mac person thought that if I moved to Aperture, it would handle this number of photos much better... I've never much looked at Aperture before, so I'm not sure... About 2+ years ago, I had PCs and used Adobe Photoshop Elements - loved the organizer, and the level of editing power was just about right.... These days, I have next to no time for any editing except the occasional red-eye, but I can enjoy doing it on occasion (mostly swapping out backgrounds, making collages, etc).
What could I do to improve things???

iPhoto is rated for 250,000 images and while you've a way to go just yet that is still a very big library.
With Libraries of that size I would expect a slowness loading or quitting, though not in normal use - viewing, organizing and so on.
You may be able to speed up launching by turning off all automatic syncing - looking for Shared Libraries, Checking with Mobile Me etc in the Preferences.
Aperture is indeed a Professional application, but I would caution that there is less value in it if you're not shooting Raw and that there is a learning curve in using it. You can download a free trial of Aperture [here|http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial>
You can have multiple libraries in iPhoto, however the downside is that you can only have one open at a time.
If you opt to go that way then to create a library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and use the same keystroke to Choose between Libraries.
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • PE 10 Organizer bogging down with any activity.

I am running PE 10 and have had most iterations of Elements since the beginning.  Any time I work in Organizer, it is extremely slow.  The folders on the side go down to a few before coming back up with the folder listing.  It I try to delete or move photos it goes through the same long process.  I even had a solid state drive put in my computer that runs all the programs.  The photos are on a different hard drive.  That did not help things at all!  I would prefer to continue running Organizer but this certainly deters me from using it and using it to its potential.  What else can I do?

Please turn off Auto Analysis (and othe background processes) if you don't use it very frequently.
For this, go to Edit >> Preferences >> Media Analysis and uncheck all the checkboxes.
How much media do you have in your catalog? A rough count of the no. of folders?
    Thanks

  • My iPhone 4 (and now 4s) keeps getting bogged down with 3-8 GB of "Other Files". The only way I'm able to clear it up is to do a fresh wipe of the phone and then start all over in terms of customizing my phone, settings, etc. This not acceptable. Help

This is a ridiculous, Microsoft like, workaround. Please address this in an update or someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong to cause this and how to correct it without completely wiping out my phone every 2 weeks.

other files is not garbage it's podcasts and storage used by apps and the likes
you keep getting them because you keep installing stuff that take up the space

  • Firefox Bogged Down, Tried many things with no luck

Firefox 32.0.3 very slow will not play certain videos or display certain graphs, images. Would appreciate some help please as I want a reliable machine. I am posting this on my backup machine.
Was running nightly. Uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller Advanced when the slowness started.
Installed firefox as above with same problems.
Tried Reset, Tried basic profile with no add ons. Profile improved so that some use could be made but still slow.
e.g. www.finance.yahoo.com will not play videos from this site. Just freezes and eventually comes up with unresponsive script.
Similar on www.google.com/finance - unresponsive script when trying to display images.
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest will not display. (uses Java).
Installed Java 67 and uninstalled old versions.
    IE11 runs these sites OK.
Updated Adobe Shockwave and test passed.
    Updated Adobe Flash player.
    Hitman Pro finds no threats.
    Running Windows Security Essentials.
    Win7 professional 64-bit SP1 genuine regular updates.

    4GB dual channel DDR@665MHz
    HP304Ah motherboard, (XUI Processor)
Hard disk, 232GB with 13GB space.
    Computer has 70 processes running.
Have another lower spec desktop running Win8.1 and a i3 laptop that both run these sites OK - one with Nightly and the other with Firefox.
When the system was working with Nightly the system did not bog down until I had over 30tabs open in Firefox. Nows its bogged down with only 2 tabs open.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

  • Lion to Snow Leopard MBP 13 Early 2011

    GDay guys,
ive bought an used mbp 13 early 2011 and on the recovery hdd is only osx 10.7.5 but ive seen on the apple site that the mbp 13 early 2011 was deliveried with osx 10.6.
is it possible to downgrade or reinstall to snow leopard?
can i download snow leopard anywhere for free or do i have to buy it?

Depends on what version of Snow Leopard came with the computer. Snow Leopard is only available as 10.6.3 on the retail discs. Newer models cannot boot from that version. You would need the original discs which you can purchase from Apple Customer Service.
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
For Mac App Store: Apple - Support - Mac App Store.
For iTunes: Apple - Support - iTunes.
There is no "downgrading." You will have to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch or create a separate, new partition on the drive on which to install Snow Leopard.

  • MBP 15" early 2011 with WDC VelociRaptor?

I notice that there is a thread for MBP 15" early 2011 with SSD https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775423 But, I can't afford that type of SSD with only that capacity, i.e. 250GB. Here, in town, it would cost nearly USD500.
So, I'm start to thinking to choose WDC VelociRaptor 2,5" 10000rpm 600GB SATA III 6GB/s WD6000BLHX http://www.amazon.com/600GB-Sata-6GB-2-5-HD/dp/B003G4I5OA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid =1303127766&sr=8-2 which only USD300 with more than 2 times capacity of SSD 510.
I already used VelociRaptor 3,5" 10000rpm 300GB SATA II 3GB/s WD3000HLFS  on my PC and it is producing excessive heat, so that I should turning on the HDD fan which has 2500rpm.
The question is: will it produce an excessive heat also? since MBP 15" body is aluminum unibody that is perfect conductor to transfer heat. I saw iFixIt website tear it down piece per piece. So, I think it still do able. But is it compatible also?
    thanks.

    Hi n,
I would continue working with AppleCare, because if it turns out to be a hardware issue, you'll want to get it repaired while still under warranty.
Have they suggested/have you done a reinstall of the OS yet?

My MBP is Early 2011 but dunno why cant use mirroring with apple TV, the icon cannot be found. So cannot use mirroring.
I have follow trouble shooting , they recommend to go system preference -> display , thus can find out the mirroring icon if no mean it doesnt support. But according to the web, Early 2011 MBP should be able to use, dunno why.

Just realise I havent updated my OS to mountain lion and this is the reason why I cannot use mirroring before ^^
    Thanks all

I was running Lightroom 3.6 with the OS Windows XP (Sp3). The whole system crashed, I am unable to recover the serial number. I then upgraded my OS to Windows 7 (x64) and down loaded Lightroom 4.4, I wanted to buy a licence so I then upgraded to Lightroom 5, now when I try to register I am asked for the original licence/serial number. Where do I go from here??????

If you upgraded from 3.6 to 5 (you didn't indicate buying 4.4) then you will need the serial number from 3.6 in order to be able to use 5.  If you did not keep a record of it there is a chance it might be available thru your Adobe account online, but if not, there is likely not much you can do except to return the upgrade and purchase a full version.  Try contacting support using chat and explain your situation to see if they can help.

If you did purchase 4.4 then that should be sufficient to use to activate 5.
I can never be sure what goes on with Lightroom, and the Adobe site (even when it works properly) makes finding information about products difficult these days so I am at a loss to confirm anything I say.

I'm having problems with FlashPlayerPlugin and plugin-container. They keep starting up and bogging down the system. This has been a recent occurrance. I've made sure that I have the latest version. I notice the problem when I am opening some applicatio, and it freezes. If I go to Task Manager, I can see the two Adobe apps sucking up CPU cycles. If I end the processes, then the other apps continue. Today, I uninstalled FlashPlayerPluginqand plugin-container. All day since I have had no freezing of an app. What should I do to correct the problem?

Here's an explanation of what those processes are.

I'm curious about what you did to uninstall just those.

  • MBP shuts down with over 30% charge

Recently my mbp has just been shutting down without warning, even with a battery at over 30%. I try and reboot and it turns on, then shuts down right away. Once I plug it back into to a power supply its fine. I've had it for about two years, been through 223 cycles, and it says its in good condition.

When did you last properly calibrate your battery?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
Calibration should be done approximately every two months. Failure to do so for a long period of time can result in the microchip "fuel gauge" in the battery losing the ability to accurately determine the remaining charge, and it will report that there is more charge in the battery than is actually present. As a result, the computer will not initiate Safe Sleep at the proper time, and instead undergo a hard shut down, one of the main causes of hard drive directory damage. Once the battery is in the state resulting from a failure to calibrate, it is not possible to calibrate the battery, and it will need to be replaced. Note that Apple specifies, +"A properly maintained Apple notebook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 300 full charge and discharge cycles."+ Calibration is considered part of proper maintenance

  • My MBP Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 Bogging down

    Hey Folks,
This is my first time posting here so please bare with me.
I use my computer strictly for Final Cut X and have gone 9 months with no an issue.  This Season I've been using it and I've noticed within the first 15 mins of editing, I see my ram go from 10gb avail to 5gb. (I'm not running any more apps than before or doing heavy VFX.) After another 5 mins it gets down to 820mb available and I have to run CleanMemory to reset it back up to five.
Now, this is the 16gb with 500gb flash and shouldn't be bogging down hard enough to reset (like windows xp)..
    Please Help?

    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
I would also check what is consuming memory steadily. It definitely sounds like you have an issue that needs taking care of. Open the Console in the Utilities folder, select All Diagnostic Messages, and see if there is a steady stream of error messages being posted into the log.

  • Does making Folders filled with Playlists Bog down your computer?

    Hi,
I have just finished uploading my entire CD collection to iTunes (6.0.3) and would like to make many, many playlists (500+). I don't want to scroll thru all of these to find a specific playlist. So I want to make some general folders (ie-Road songs, Workout songs, Love mix, etc...) I am also concerned that if I have 50 Folders filled with 5-10 playlists, that it will bog down my system. Has anyone experienced this? Has anyone experienced other issues by doing this? Any comments or would be suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
