MBP 13" fans too loud, sound like a motor saw

Hi there
My MBP went crazy last night, well the fans did
They seem to be in overdrive if you just listen to them, but both SMFC and iStatPro say that they are spinning at maybe 3500 RPM.
I tried to reset the SMC, but it didn't change anything. I hope there is a software fix for this cause I'd hate to send it in for repair since it would mean beeing without it for at least a week.
Wonder if reinstalling Snow Leo would make a difference?

My fans run loud almost constantly. When my iSight starts up, certain websites, even just watching videos, the fans get really loud. How do I find out what apps are causing it?
Use your Mac's "Activity Monitor". It is in the Finder > Go > Utilities folder.
You can sort processes by CPU% (descending) to quickly find the biggest user.
For more info, launch the utility and use Activity Monitor > Help.

Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • Transition Sounds like Airplane Motor!!!

I am using the dissolve transition in iMovie and allowed iMovie to set the transition times automatically. It works fine in iMovie and when I import the movie into iDVD. However, when I watch the burned DVD on my DVD player, all the transitions sound like a motor or like someone is tapping on a microphone. The clips sound just fine. Has anyone run into this problem???
ps Is there a huge difference between Best Quality and Best Performance?

    Hi
Best Quality is to use if Your movie/movies + menus add together to more
than 60 min but less than 120 min.
Best Performances is if Your total is less than 60 min.
Gbs not of any interest at all for iDVD.
When I make a movie in iMovie and want a transition betweren two clips:
    - Switch in TimeLine so that it shows 1 videotrack (audio) + 2 extra audio tracks.
    - Then select the clips (prior and after where You want the transition)
    - goto Advance menu and down to Extract sound
    - now apply the transition
Result: I get sound and transition right (at least)
There is a book I learned a lot from: David Pogue: The Missing Manual of iMovie HD (6) & iDVD HD

  • W100: speakers too quiet - fan too loud

    Hello,
i am using the w100-10d and i am not amused about the loudness concerning the fan and
the speakers. The fan is too loud and the speakers are very quiet.
Is anybody there, who can give me some informations about the speakers and their configuration ?
In Windows 7 and in the Toshiba Conf. Panel the loudness is on max. level, but the sound is too quiet.
Perhaps Toshiba is estimating all users are using the headset ?
    Thanks

    >Is anybody there, who can give me some informations about the speakers and their configuration ?
    > In Windows 7 and in the Toshiba Conf. Panel the loudness is on max. level, but the sound is too quiet.
This Libretto is an kind of tablet PC an small 7 display device I dont know what speaker loudness do you expect but you will not get the same loudness like on 15 notebook equipped with bigger speakers.
Furthermore the speakers are mono and not stereo.
By the way; the sound can be configured in control panel -> sound
Check if all volume controls are set to top.

  • MBP frequently slows down and sounds like an aircraft taking off

I have the original MBP with the following: OS X 10.5.6, Processor: 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo, Memory: 2GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB HD
I've recently started to notice that while running 2-3 applications my MBP's drive will frequently (happens about 4-5 times a day) start sounding like an aircraft taking off and some of the system resources jump up to around 100%.
What can I do to remedy this situation?

Take it to your nearest Apple Store so they can hear it for themselves. Or if you have AppleCare or your computer is still under warranty, call Apple. If you computer really is that loud, then the Apple techs should have no problem hearing your computer +taking off+ over the phone.
    Let Apple deal w/it.

  • Satellite 2410-404: Screen is lose and the CPU-fan too loud

    Hi,
first off: sorry for my bad english.
Now: I have several problems with my laptop:
    1. The screen/monitor is lose and doesnt stand, so when I want to work with my laptop, I have to lean something against the monitor, so it doesnt fall to one side. Any solutions to this?
    2. My Cpu-fan is really loud and I already opened the case and cleaned it, but every few days the noise comes back (guess its not rotating very well and contacting every once in a while some part of the computer) and i have to reopen and touch it some times till it works normally.
    3. Also I have lost my Windows recovery CD (OEM Version) . Do I have to buy a new one if I want windows reinstalled?
    thanks for any help

    Hi
    1. I presume the lid cannot stay in the right position because the hinges are a little bit loose.
    2. It sounds like something wrong with the fan rotation. In such cases the easiest way is change the fan.
    3. You can purchase the Recovery CD form the Toshiba service partner in your country. Its not very expensive.
But you can also install the original Windows OS on your notebook and then you can install the Toshiba drivers and utilities. All Toshiba stuff you will be able to download from the Tosh driver page.

  • MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R Northbridge fan too loud !

I have a very quite system, but the Northbridge fan is too loud ! In fact it is the loudest element in my system and I'd like to replace it.
Which fans are there that I could use instead ?

  • MacPro graphics card fan sounds like a buzz saw.

.MacPro3,1 stock ATI Radeon HD 2600.  Constant and loud.  For a couple of months would get this sound for a short period, usually when booting up, but it never persisted.  Now suddenly it is constant, though once in a great while drops in level and chugs, sounding like it's laboring.  Generally a steady whine.  Computer functions fine (HD video editing) and has through heavy use for years.  Have card in slot 1.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks

If I were in your situation, I would simply replace the card.  It's just old.
Apple Radeon 5770 is the best upgrade option if you are running Snow Leopard.  It's a much better GPU and 100% compatable.
If you must keep the 2600, then try cleaning the dust off of it.

  • Sleeping G5 Spools Fans until it sounds like a Boeing

    Hi all,
I recently received my dad's old work computer as a Christmas gift. It was his main tool for ~3 years, and lived in his office within a woodworking shop (lots of fine dust, lots of serious drafting and rendering usage). Mind you, dad knows his computers, and treated it very well.
Since before it passed into my hands, the computer has begun struggling with fan speed. When running relatively light stuff (youtube vids, loading email, etc.) the fans will speed up and slow down in a seemingly random pattern.
    vroooooom
10 seconds of normal fan noise
    vrrroooooooooommmmm!!!!
10 minutes of normal fan noise
    vrooom
1 minute of normal fan noise
    vrrrrroooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Although the noise is disconcerting, it doesn't seem to conicide with any decrease in actual computer performance.
The real problem occurs whenever it goes to sleep. At that time the fans spool up, and spool up, and continue to spool up until they are running at what I imagine must be the maximum speed. They will then stay at that speed indefinitely, and can only be stopped by holding the power switch to force the machine off, as it stops responding to normal attempts to wake it up.
I have the option of taking it to a shop, but would like to ask here first. The specs are:
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier Power Mac 7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
    Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz
    Number of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 8GB
    Bus Speed: 1.35 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.4f1
Built-In Sound Card: Texas Instruments TAS3004
    ATI Radeon 9650 AGP (255MB)
    Added USB Slots: pcie55,2928
Pioneer DVD-RW-109 (Revision A912, Protocol ATAPI)
I believe this is a "late 2005", though I'm still a little unclear where the dividing line lies.
    Thank you very much!

PowerMac G5 owners hang out over on their own forum, this is Intel Mac Pro that came out post G5

I'd want to look at and for problems with the liquid cooling; dust build up - really open up and take apart some. And look at some of the guides and articles.
Then monitor fans and temps; maybe reset the SMU.
Also, run the CD with Apple Hardware Test.
The trouble with forced shutdown... the disk directory may be left damaged state.

  • Non-MAC laptop fan too loud when running iTunes

Recently I experienced very loud/fast spin fan with heated laptop whenever I run iTunes, especially if I downloading apps. And it wasn't brief. Spin vigorously throughout the downloading process. I never experienced this problem before. I am using iPhone 4S with latest iTunes on VAIO laptop. And this problem actually not permit me to install large updates (iOS), therefore, I am still using iOS 5.XX

  • RD240 Bios Update / Temperature / FAN too loud

    Hi,
i update my Bios and now I got an error in the BMC.
Its called "System Ambient" - Upper Critical - 127 degrees C.
I have 2 other RD240 in the same room, with the newest Bios... no problem!
When I shutdown the server, wait maybe 20min and start again. The same temperature like before.
And the System Fans run with 12500rpm... very loud ;-)
I tried to flash the Bios again... didn't help
    Erase CMOS - didn't help
Power down and wait 20mins without power... nothing.
Can anybody help with a good idea?
    Thanks
    Julian

  • Y50-70 Fan too loud

I installed an samsung 850 evo 500 GB in my Y50-70 with windows 8.1 because my hdd just broke. Everything went as planned with no issues until the installation was complete, but sometimes the CPU fan becomes very loud, even if I'm just using chrome, for example.
    Is that normal?
Another thing...after the instalation, i lost all of the drivers. I downloaded all from the lenovo's web site, but i miss the energy manager with dust removal option...how can i get it back?
    best regards,

    Dear Guhdalpai
    Welcome in lenovo community
With such kind of usage we should have a normal performance of CPU, in all ways please get into the Task manager and open Performance tab then check the Speed and Utilization percentage and let me know with a screen shot .
As for the Energy management application, Please use the below link to download and install it :-

  • Mac Overheating? Fan Too loud

so recently, when i am working on my mac (having been on for a while) , the fan tends to get a little noisy. not enough to completely drown out all thought, but it's still there. also it gets rather hot. Now this is when the computer is fairly busy, with three broswers open, but i am just listening to music in one of the browsers and on photoshop.
I'll close it to let it cool off, but I was just wondering is it normal for Macs to do this? That's all I want to know, if it's a normal thing.
    THanks!

yes, it is normal for them to run on the hot side, especially when using programs like photoshop.

  • Mac Pro Too Loud

I have 4 units of Mac Pro. All have same specs. Early 2008 model, 2.8ghz Quadx2, 8gb ram, 320gb hardisk, 2tb (2x1tb raid). All my other 3 mac pro seems to be normal and silent. And this one mac pro of mine seems to be louder than the other 3. It has a humming sound. the fans seems to turn faster than the others. Any got any experience with this? Please help, Thanks.

I have the same unit. It's the ATI Radeon HD2600 video card fan. It sounds like a jet warming up on the tarmac. The "genius" at the local Apple Store told me I didn't have a problem. If you put your finger on the fan it goes completely quiet. I teach in a lab with 30 G5's and MacPro's (all earlier than the 2008's) and my one new Mac Pro makes more noise than my entire lab of 30 machines. Combine that with the "on again, off again" USB problems, I'm beginning to realize this is not going to be a pleasant experience.

  • Sounds like a blender etc

The other day my screen went completely out, then it would come in in a flicker.
Today it started making loud sounds like a blender or a remote controlled car, and then the beach ball and then it froze. when i restarted i would get the blink system folder, or a kernel panic, or nothing. I found that if i started it up while gentally rocking it like a baby it could get to the desktop then freeze.... i really cant loose the data on my HD...

I would suggest trying to boot from the software CD that came with your machine. If you can, use disk utility's repair disk function. The blank system folder would suggest it doesn't know where to go to find your boot volume, though it sounds like you may have something more complicated going on.
To get to your data, if you have access to another mac, power up your machine and hold down the 't' key. Hopefully, this will start your machine in target disk mode, essentially turning your laptop into an external hard drive. Then just pull off and backup what you need.
