Mbp 13" i5 2,3 vs. 2,4 GhZ

hi there. thinking of getting an mbp 13" i5. i saw that there is a 2,3 GHz version and a 2,4 GHz version. for which one would you go and why? i´m gonna use it together with ableton, ni maschine and some max msp patches in the same time. thanks for help.
going to get 8MB RAM anyways.
actually also the 13" i7 2,7 /2,8 GHz would be an affordable option for me, but i heard they get hot and loud very fast ?!?!....

It's gone down to between 70-80 degrees now, but that still seems too hot. Using the keyboard for too long feels like it's gonna burn my fingers.
Or if that's scaled down too much, here: http://i.imgur.com/TLNpDbf.png
Oh, the exact model is A1278 (A127B?), "MacBookPro8,1" in System Information.

kindly help what i need to do... will appreciate much...thank u
    my MBP specs:
    13 inch early 2011
    2.3 ghz intel core i5
    4 gb 1333 mhz ddr3
    mac os x lion 10.7.5 (11g63)
    itunes 10.7 (21)

    1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
    2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
    3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
    4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
    5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.)

  • Upgrade my 2010 MBP or Purchase a new Mac?

    Hey All,
I need some advice and would really value your opinions.  I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro and it's been great to me for 5 years, however, it is so slow compared to my work computer which is a 2013 MacBook Air.  Since I don't personally own my work's MacBook Air, I am afraid to personalize it - install my apps, media, etc.  I love how fast my MacBook Air is and knowing how fast a computer can be makes using my MacBook Pro very frustrating.  I don't use my MacBook Pro for anything substantial: no gaming, no photoshop, etc., but would love it if it was faster overall (transferring data, downloading).  All I use it for is primarily web browsing, word/excel documents, and iTunes (have all my media stored on an external hard drive but my iTunes reads it wirelessly from my Apple Airport Extreme - where my external hard drive is plugged into).
My question for you all is this:  is upgrading to an SSD worth it?  Can I make my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro comparable in overall speed to my work's 2013 MacBook Air? If not, will it at least make is noticeably quicker?  I already upgraded my RAM to 8GB without seeing much improvement.  I've heard that SSD's can make a huge difference (especially if you get the right one).  If true...which SSD do you recommend for my Machine specifically?
I recently upgraded from OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) to Yosemite and noticed a lot of glitches...is that normal?  All these issues seem to point me in the direction of spending the $1500+ on a new computer but my current 2010 MacBook Pro runs decent for its age and I would appreciate not having to spend the extra dinero...idk what to do but am interested in hearing what you would do. Below are my computer's specs:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
Processor: 2.4 GHz intel Core i5
    Memory: 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256MB
    Thoughts?  Thanks in advance,
    Joe

Try installing the 10.10.2 update if you didn't already. Seems to solve a lot of slowness and issues.
I have a 2010 MBP 13" with Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz (slower than yours) and it runs awesomely, doing the same stuff you do with yours...
If you want an SSD, consider OWC's Data Doubler kit. Lets you turn your CD drive into a hard drive bay, so you can have an SSD and the hard disk - and make your own Fusion Drive (which can really improve performance). Be warned that there are issues with this in Yosemite, and you need a Mavericks boot drive or recovery partition (or OS X 10.10.0 or beta) to run the commands. The whole Fusion Drive process is pretty advanced, so take that into consideration.

  • Pros Cons - iMac vs MBP (used as a desktop)

New Apple convert here. I've been searching forums for days but haven't yet found up-to-date answers to my questions. If you have some time, please continue reading! :-)
I just bougt the new iPad Air--yay! It'll probably never leave my side.
I also just bought a MBP retina, late 2013, 8GB ram, 2.4 GHz i5, 256 flash storage to replace our dying Dell desktop.
My background and estimated usage: I'm a homeschooling mom and also a writer/blogger. I am a huge content consumer and just getting into more content creation as I learn more about video and photo editing and web design. Not a professional photographer or videographer by any means, but a heavy Internet user with strong curiousity about everything a Mac is capable of. And don't forget I'll be relying heavily on our computers as we homeschool our children.
That all being said, here's my dilemma:
Should I buy a maxed out iMac to future proof for our family for a long as possible OR should I keep the MBP with mediocre specs and buy a cheap external display so that I can have that feeling of a desktop with more screen real estate that I already miss?
    Some notes:
Yes, I realize the main difference is portability and that an iMac could be configured to have better specs for less $$ than a laptop.
I love the idea of portability, but in reality I feel like if I had an external display I'd mainly use the laptop as a desktop. (I originally bought a Thunderbolt display but returned because it was very expensive and I anticipate an upgrade from Apple in the future.)
I also tend to overestimate my future usage. I could spend the next 5 years just checking Facebook, or I really could get into graphic design and video editing, so I'm not sure if I should just go entry-level or if I should max out the specs to future proof our investment. Money is a huge factor, but if we're going to do this, we want to do it right.
Questions about iMac vs using a MBP as a desktop:
1.Since having my MBP for the last few weeks, I feel like I'm charging it constantly. At least twice a day. Is this normal? And is it a reason to get an iMac?
    2. Will using a MBP so heavily and hooked up to an external display for long periods of time have any negative effect on its battery or life or its screen since the MBP lid will be closed and the screen subjected to more heat?
    3. Suggestions for a decent but inexpensive monitor to use if we end up keeping the MBP?
    4. Any other reasons I haven't considered as to whether a desktop or a laptop + display would be better for my situation?
    5. When plugged into an external display, does the MBP run off the battery or does it switch to AC power without affecting the battery?
    6. For my suggested use, should I keep the somewhat baseline specs of the MBP that I already have, or should I upgrade everything (just in case)?
    7. Or, should I get the best iMac I can afford and if I ever feel like I really need a laptop, I can always buy a cheap one or save for another MBP?
As long as there are no real cons to using the MBP with an external display and that it can take heavy but basic usage day in and out without shortening it's life, I'm leaning toward keeping the MBP and buying a cheap external display until Apple updates the Thunderbolt display. I just feel like if I ever *want* to work in another room or outside the house, I'm going to appreciate having a laptop that functions as both laptop and desktop.
I'd appreciate any feedback. I know this was ridiculously long, but I need help from those who know! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It seems that you have this pretty well thought out, the iMac does have more "power" and a larger display, etc...
    The MBP has the portability.
It really depends on how much you need to be mobile with it, it sounds as though it would be used more like a desktop than "I have to have my computer with me" kind of thing. Video and graphics will be easier to deal with on the iMac, no battery to consider, will probably run considerably cooler than a portable  in clamshell mode, no external monitior to deal with...
Problem is you can't "grab and go".
You ned to really consider how it will be used the most, the iMac will give more bang for the buck, if having to take it with is not the overriding concern.
You can also use a cheaper portable/iPad for those occasions that you need to have a device with you.
    A decision for you make.
    All the Best
I'm sure others will chime in as well

  • 64-Bit Bootcamp on MBP

I bought a MBP last year around this time (2.4 GHz model, 4GB RAM). I have always wanted to install 64-bit Vista so I could use all of RAM (32-bit only recognizes only 2.98GB). Now to my knowledge, you can now install a 64-bit windows OS on a Mac Pro, but can you install a 64-bit on a MBP without losing any function? (e.g. backlight keyboard, iSight, eject button, F1-F10 specialty keys)
I know this is a topic that has been long discussed, but I cannot find a recent one nor did I spend more than 10 minutes looking for one either. I wold like to know if anyone is currently using a 64-bit windows OS and any troubles they've encountered. Thanks guys!

Vista 64 bit does address all 4 gigs of memory. That's the configuration I'm running.
Boot Camp though, doesn't support anything. You're not "running" boot camp when you're using Windows, so in the future, if you want to install an accessory, instal a program, whatever it may be, completely forget the word Boot Camp. You have a PC (gasp!) contained in an Apple branded case.

  • So im about to buy a mac pro, I just need help cause im not sure if it's worth paying more for instance, a hi-res screen compared to the stock screen, and will i really miss the .2 ghz and the upgraded video card if I get the 2.0 ghz mbp?

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • CPU speed of 1st MBP

Just curious. What's the CPU speed of the first (lower-end) MBP? 2.0Ghz?

The lowest end was a 15" 1.83 GHz Core Duo. There was actually a 1.67 GHz MBP that was "introduced" but never shipped - Apple announced in Jan 2006 (MacWorld Expo) that the new MBPs would have 1.67 and 1.83 GHz processors, but then gave them a speed bump (via press release) to 1.83 and 2.0 GHz models that actually shipped.
The 17" MBPs started with 2.16 GHz Core Duo processors.
    Hope this helps...

  • Purchase advise:  MBP CD based system

    Ive got:
    1. a Mackie 16 channel board (CR1604)
    2. dbx 166a compressor rack box
    3. mics/ keyboards/guitars
    4. Lexicon and Eventide processor boxes
    5. 2nd gen ADAT
    6. JLC datasync
    7. Logic Express 7.2.3
    8. MBP CD with external FW drives
Im hoping to combine all of these into a few useable workflows...
    a. I believe I need a way to get the output of the Mackie board into the MBP via SPDIF input. Not sure how to do that. Because the dbx Compressor box is a serial device (processing all of the stereo output of the board) - it has two outs which I hope to use. Ive got these wired to a small patch bay.
    b. I really hope to avoid buying a new device or gear which would duplicate my existing capabilities (which is what Ive found so far in searching around eg MOTU's stuff). I dont need more mic preamps.
    c. Ive never found a good way to overdub with effects with my current setup. Im no audio ace, just a guy with a very simple understanding of routing. If I lay down some electronic drums for example with my RM1X, and then want to overdub my Jackson electric guitar with Harmonizer effects - how to accomplish the recording of this without rerecording the drums ? the Lexicon and Eventide boxes are wired in to the Mackie as parallel sends. Ive read that tracks should be recorded dry, but sometimes you just like the sound overall and want to record it as you hear it. I dont know how to keep the effects in the loop and also record just the one channel whilst hearing another (1 or more) channels.
    Cheers

  • Spinning wheel on late 2011 mbp

my late 2011 mbp running 10.7.5 with 2.4 GHz i5 and 4GB which I bought last September is getting the spinning wheel. It only started recently and it makes my mbp lag for 3-5 seconds. If I click on anything or type, nothing would happena dn I would have to wait then everything would happen later. I don't see why this should be happening to a mbp which is over a year old. Can anyone help me?

There was nothing red that came up from the first part.
The lag has been getting worse. If my mbp lags then it does all of the commands at least 3-5 seconds late with the spinning wheel. I have to force quit my applications at times.

  • Why no BTO option for 7200 RPM Drive in 13" MBP???

There is no BTO option for a 7200 RPM drive in the 13", but there is for the 15" and 17". Does this mean they won't fit/work in the 13", or is Apple just not offering it?
    Thanks..
    Message was edited by: solsun

It means Apple is not offering it. There are 7200 rpm drives with the proper form factor (9.5 mm height). The heat difference is not significant. As I recall, when the MBP line first came out, 7200 rpm drives were available on the 17" MBPs, but not on the 15" models. You can't get a new 13" MBP with anything faster than a 2.53 GHz CPU, either - it's just a differentiation point. You can get the stock capacity drive on the 13" MBP, and put in a 500 GB 7200 rpm drive yourself.

If you are still plagued by this, check out this reply by mendes1:
You will be happy to know that the problem you have is a known issue with Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro. It's caused by a damaged NVIDIA graphic card.
Apple has found that those computers have unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens when OS X switches graphic card. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US
Fortunately, Apple is repairing all of those computers for free, so make a backup of your data and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired"
I had mine replaced on the weekend.

  • Internet slowed to a crawl

My MBP (4,1 | 10.5.4 | 2.5 GHz CPU | 2 GB RAM | GeForce 8600 M GT) connects wirelessly to our Linksys router (WRT54GX2). At 8:00 pm PDT, my incoming and outgoing packets were reduced to 1KB.
    * We also have an iMac (7,1 | 10.5.4 | 2 GHz CPU | 1 GB RAM | ATI,RadeonHD2400) on the network and it works fine. Therefore, my router, is not the issue.
    * I can ping and traceroute Google so my wireless network card is not the issue.
    * Here is a link to my speed test: http://www.speedtest.net/result/308418874.png. I ran this test from my iMac. My internet connection is not the issue.
I went to System Preferences > Network > and created a new location, hoping this would solve the problem. It did not.
I can post console messages if need be. Please help. Thank you.

  • External Hard Drive Partitioned to boot both Intel and PowerPC -and backup

Have been remiss backing up drives, do it sporadically and have had a few close calls and am now trying to upgrade my skills.
I work with 3 computers - 2 intel MBP Core Duo (one Leopard, one Tiger, difference Ghz, screen size, generation) and PowerPC G4-running Tiger. I read recently you can partition a drive and format one as a bootable drive for an intel, the other for a powerPC.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
I'll have to read the instructions a couple more times before I get it. But what do people think - have any of you done it? Problems?
I have a further question or questions: I saw an external drive for the Mac 1000GB at OWC!!! Yikes, there is also one for 1500 GB!!!
I wondered how many partitions I could make - can I create a bootable drive in three separate partitions, and use those as a backup drive for each? Money is an issue, I can't afford a drive for each computer, so this would be the most economical.
Could I create a 4th partition, just to move photos, music libraries without their being computer specific (e.g., check share library?)
Is there any advantage in creating a boot drive that just starts the computer, but keep the backup files separate, or is cloning the drive then doing incremental backups the best so it is both a boot drive and a backup?
This is beyond my skill set and I am still fuzzy about backup software and boot drives and how they all interconnect - so far I have just been saving desktops and font folders to my oh so slow USB EXTERNAL HD (200 MB) periodically, or specific key files. Is there anyone who can walk me through this?
    Thanks
    Annexit

Partition the drive using Disk Utility, I'd recommend one bootable clone partition per machine, one partition for archiving (data you want to keep but not on a machine), and optionally one partition for a Time Machine backup for the Leopard system. Use the Apple Partition Map (under options in the Partition tab). Note that you'll read that Intel machines require GUID partition scheme, but that's only for installing the OS from a DVD, not relevant for cloning. You'll want APM to boot the PPC machines. Bootable clones can be sized equal to the internal HDDs being backed up, or slightly smaller. Partitions should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Personally, I have two external drives set up identically, with partitions for bootable clones of a PPC machine with 10.4 and two Intel machines running 10.5, plus an extra partition where I store movie projects. I use SuperDuper to update the bootable clones. I have two drives because I store one offsite (at work). Every few days I bring an updated backup drive to work and the other one home.

  • Macbook Pro Late 2008 model - crashing constantly (video card related?)

So not even two months ago, I had a logic board issue with this computer. I took it to the apple store and got the $200 repair package. It's a late 2k8 model MBP, here are the specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603)
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP51.007E.B06
      SMC Version (system):          1.33f8

Ok, so I use this laptop for a variety of things, including watching television, work, and playing video games. Occasionally (read: consistently but still seemingly random) when under moderate-heavy stress, the computer will "shut down". What I mean by this is the screen will instantly turn black, and there will be an audio stutter remaining with the only option being to do a hard restart. This happens on a variety of games and videos, including League of Legends and Counter Strike, mostly everything I play consistently. I will post the crash report below as well.

Anyway, I really appreciate the help in advance. Since I just had this computer repaired, I find it highly unlikely this is due to my own error, and is more than likely hardware based. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

This is telling you the issue: the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
As this is hardware issue, the only thing you can do is to make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the logic board replaced again. Your Mac is still under the 90-day warranty of the last repair, so it will be free

  • Upgrade my Macbook Pro 17" with solid state drive and RAM?

My MBP is a 17" mid-2009, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB.
I am an architecture student. I use 3D modeling programs like SketchUp, Revit, AutoCad, etc. According to these software websites, my MBP is sufficient. However, when I'm running these programs, I get the apple "beach ball" a LOT, along with a lot of lagging even when I'm working on simple models. After doing some research, it appears that upgrading my RAM to 8GB (my model's max capability) and buying a solid state drive would help my MBP run much faster and much cooler.
    My questions:
    1. What brand and exact product #/link to this (if possible) of RAM (2 x 4GB sticks) and SSD should I purchase?
    2. Which SSD GB option should I purchase? I chatted with OWC online and was given this variety of SSDs.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/SSD/Mercury_Electra_3G_Solid_Sta te
    3. I was also given this product bundle recommendation. It's cheaper than buying everything individually, but I'm not sure if I need the tools and I don't understand the purpose/advantage of having the "OWC Express Silver Enclosure".
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/YSSDMP240/
I just want my MBP to run as fast as possible while running my modeling software w/o spending an arm and a leg if possible. But I don't know if it's worth the trouble and expense to upgrade my current MBP, which I love, or just getting a new MBP or Mac desktop. And if I should just get another Mac, I don't know which one I should get.
Another thing I have seen is the Mac Mini. Is it possible to plug this or any other external device to my MBP in order to accomplish my performance goals without having to modify my MBP or buy another Mac?
This is the first time I've posted any help questions to the Apple Support Community. I really appreciate any advise you Mac experts can give me. I called one of the Apple Stores, but I was definitely not satisfied with the inexperienced rep's answers.
    Thanks!

    1. OWC or Crucial are recommended sources for memory. You can usually find a 5% off and free shipping code for Crucial on retailmenot.com. On crucial just key in your system information in their memory selector.
    2. Your system likely supports SATA II speeds, so the SSD OWC pointed to would work. I installed one in our 2010 mac mini and it's working well. I originally installed their 6G drive however it ran at SATA I speeds. Turns out the 3G which is specd for SATA II is what was needed and works fine.
    3. The OWC package they recommended includes a case to put your existing hard drive in. That helps to be able to transfer your data back to the SSD then you can use it as a backup drive or as an external storage device.

  • Help needed : Hooking up my guitar to my Macbook Pro

Hi guys, I'm still learning to use my MBP, but I can't for the life of me get any sound from my guitar to play through my MBP. I've hooked the output from my guitar amp (Peavey Blazer 158 15watts) to my line in port using a 3.5mm plug. I've checked the audio setting in preferences and audio midi setup in the audio midi setting in Utilities, all seems ok..like..when I strum my guitar I can actually see the blue bars going up on the input level monitor, but there's still no sound through my speakers.I've gone through the forums and I've read that the line input needs a pre-amped signal, but I think my guitar amp signal should be strong enough. I hope someone can explain what's the correct way to hook up my guitar to my MBP. Thanks.

Hey there Stedman, thanks for the quick reply. I thought that there was something wrong with my line in port. I tried your advice and used garageband, and I finally got to hear my guitar through my MBP. Too bad the sound banks that garageband has really *****. Might look around for an app to get for my guitar. Anyway... thanks again for your help.
