MBP 13 inch early 2011 graphics issues / freezing

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
So im having an issue with the graphics on my MBP. This has happened three times now and im getting scared.
So basicly i am using the computer normally (Watching youtube / mindlessly surfing the web) and suddenly this happens (Check the image!) along with a three tone beep that repeats after a few second break. The system doesnt respond to inputs and has to be forcebly shutdown. The first time this happened was about two weeks ago. Nothing on the system was changed and it happenes in more than one account.
Prior to this the computer has always ran perfectly.
The system is just like how it came from the store except i put 8Gb of ram in it about 6 or so months ago.
Im asuming i should take it to be repaired at the apple store? My warrenty is still good for a while.
Thanks for viewing!
Have a great day!

ZapplePi,
good, you have the right memory installed for your MacBook Pro. (Sometimes people install RAM that’s not suitable for their machines.)
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT), to see if it can detect a problem? (It’s not able to detect all problems, but those that it can detect can help the folks at the Apple store to determine the right course of action.) Since you have an Early 2011 model, boot from your grey Applications Install DVD that came in the box with your MacBook Pro, to run the AHT on that DVD. Select the extended test — it should take around 30 minutes or so to complete.

  • MBP 15" early 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) - freeze and 3 beeps after normal boot

    Good day.
Month ago I upgraded memory in my MBP early 2011. I bought 2 banks of 4GB Hynix 1333 Mhz(MBP had 2x2GB Hynix banks), installed them and got the first hard freeze with 3 beeps right on the login screen. Since then I got somethink like 15-20 freezes with intervals from 3-4 hours to 1 week and total silence in logs and diagnostic reports.
Note: it boots fine, and freeze occurs during work.
I'm sure it's not a RAM issue because it was tested countless times with AHT, Rember, memtest runned from single user boot, even ASD — all tests passed.
I tried to reproduce the error using Prime95 stress tests, but with no luck — MBP successfully passed 6 hours stress test under 100% CPU and RAM load.
Today MBP freezed 2 times with locked screen and without user activity. Any suggestions?
    Additional info:
    dmesg - https://gist.github.com/7d3804d11bef38090345
latest log entries right before freeze - https://gist.github.com/c66eaa8c3b08c08c6656
P.S. I'm from Russia, so we don't have AppleCare, only AASPs without needed replacement parts. Also they asks for valid proof of purchase and don't care about Apple ID, serials and stuff.

    yumitsu,
3 beeps MEANS its a RAM problem or RAM related problem. There is no doubt about this. Make sure RAM is seated properly. Reseat it if necessary. Also make sure that the DIMM slots don't feel loose as a slight jolt is probably enough to dislodge RAM and make your machine expererience these issues.
Have you tried putting back the original 2 x 2GB RAM that originally shipped with your machine back? If everything starts working normally with the original RAM, then you isolated the issue to the 2 x 4GB Hynix RAM.

  • MacBookpro Early 2011 graphic issue won't boot

    Hello,
My Early 2011 MacBookPro suddenly suffered from graphics issues for a few days then it won't boot at all.
The hardware test says it is ok and my hard drive too. But when I want to boot, the apple appears and the dong too, but then blank screen. It is the same with a bootcamp boot, but with a blue screen with lines all over the screen. The recovery partition doesn't start either. But I can access boot from my hard drive with another Mac on target mode.
Anyway Apple doesn't admit there's a problem a want me to pay the reparation, because they don't report it as a real problem, saying that I damaged the computer. But there are threads here and all over the internet, and they don't want to do anything.
On the phone, the apple guy told me that I had to pay 80$ to see if there is any problem , and " maybe if we see there's a fabrication problem, we'll fix it for free ". Do I have to trust them ? What can I do to ?
    Thank you

You should at least add your experience and see if those who have come up with 'quick fixes' can help you with your problem.

    1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
    2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
    3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
    4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
    5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.)

  • Graphics card failure in MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)

    Hi!
This is what my MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) looks like many days!!!
    What can I do?
    kt

It is a known issue in 2011-2013 MacBooks Pro. Today Apple has announced a free replacement program for those MacBooks Pro with defective GPUs (it looks like yours is one of them) which starts today in the United States and Canada, and in February 27th in the rest of the world. See -> http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

  • How will i increase the shared memory of the graphic card of macbook pro 13-inch, early 2011 from 4gb memory?

how will i increase the shared memory of the graphic card of macbook pro 13-inch, early 2011 from 4gb memory?

The current version of Mavericks is 10.9.4. To update yours download and install OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
You can upgrade RAM to the maximum your model will support. That would be:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • SSD compatability with MBP 17 inch early 2011?

    Hi
I am abit of a newb at this so I thought I would hear you guys about it.
I wish to replace my current HD with a SSD harddisk. I am thinking of getting a 500 GB one, either a samsung 840 series MZ-7TD500 500GB or a Crucial M4 512 GB (If they work). Links can be seen here:
    Samsung: http://www.edbpriser.dk/ssd-solid-state-drive/samsung-840-series-mz-7td500-500-g b-id-7036680.aspx
    Crusial: http://www.edbpriser.dk/ssd-solid-state-drive/crucial-m4-512-gb-id-4955343.aspx
What I am worried about is wherever they are combatible with my MacBookPro 17 inch Early 2011
I am not really sure what to look for so a full spec's of my laptop can ben seen here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i7-2.2- 17-early-2011-unibody-thunderbolt-specs.html
If anyone could also explain what I should look for so I don't have to ask again in the future I would be gratefull
Sorry for the danish links, but I hope its still readable.

    Hi koolewong,
If you are having an issue with a white screen after starting up your MacBook Pro, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • (MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011) Wi-Fi: No hardware installed...

The Wi-Fi hardware irregularly connects to the network. Once the WiFi is disconnected, it cannot be reconnected unless restart or shutdown. I restart or shutdown to "refresh" the scenario but the problem has grown more frequent. I can connect to the network through Ethernet and when Wi-Fi functions. I really need the Wi-Fi to function to make use of this computer  at home and at work. Aside from going to a Genius Bar, what else can be done to troubleshoot a rogue Wi-Fi hardware connection?
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OSX 10.9.5

    Reset PRAM.
Reset SMC (but no visual indication of reset).
The Wi-Fi is able to turn on and off (improved).
A day goes by with good connection.
Wi-Fi is now disconnecting realiably within 60 min of restart, no ability to toggle on and off after disconnection.
Hardware remains displayed as installed (improved).
The problem is still present. Could this be a hardware issue? I do not have AppleCare and hope to resolve this independently from Apple. Anymore troubleshooting suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thank You!

  • Macbook Pro Early 2011 having issues

    Hi all
I hope this message finds you all well.
Sorry that my first post is one begging for help but with a gig 3 weeks away i am bricking it due to the fact that my macbook pro, early 2011 has been playing up of late. It first started having problems when the L shift key became stuck, not physically but after some investigation on here I used Karabiner software to ascertain the issue and disable the key.  However since then the computer hasnt run properly at all.
I have tried disk repair and so forth, also run Avast virus check but the issues still persist.
I run Traktor DJ software and for no reason the macbook has started glitching, spinning wheel of doom comes and everything slows down. I can't run simultaneous programmes and certainly can't run my Arkaos Grand VJ software at all which isn't good when we have a big gig in 3 weeks time.
I have run the Etrecheck as shown below but I dont know what to make of it?!
Can someone please give me some advice as I am stuck and cant rely on the laptop for the gig which will throw a real spanner in the works.
    Problem description:
Runs slow, spinning wheel frequently, cannot run arkaos software, tractor software glitches regularly, L shift is stuck on (presently disabled using Karabiner software

You  have Avast installed which could be causing some problems for your Mac's operation. Use the Avast uninstaller and get rid of it.
Boot into Recovery mode by holding down the Command and R keys together and use Disk Utility there to Repair your hard drive and repair disk permissions.
    Hope that helps.
As for the shift key, you should take the computer to the Apple Genius Bar and have them look at it.

How I can do to share it on my MacBook Pro with my Apple TV?
    thanks
    <Edited by Host>

    Erik
You either need to put the photos in iTunes and share them or look at getting OS X 10.8 purchased from the app store then you can mirror your MBP as it is a mirror supporting model (early 2011 or newer for MBD and mid 2011 or newer for all other Macs.)
An app like airparrot could also help which has a free trial if you want a look.

  • Vertical Pink pixel line 17-inch, Early 2011 MacbookPro

For the past week my MBP has been acting up. When I irk on 2-3 programs simultaenously ,the screen gets distorted and I am forced to press and hold the power button to reset.
Today there is a permanent pink pixel line on my display.
Is there any workaround solution or anyway to switch off the AMD graphics card ? I believe thats the culprit.
    I have a 17 inch early 2011 2.2 Ghz Intel Core i& with 4GB DDR3 RAM on OSX 10.9.4
      Model

I see an impressive collection of LaunchAgents, Launch Daemons, Internet Plugins and drivers for who knows what. At this point I would like to suggest a completely clean install of your system (after making a complete backup of course).
At the very least uninstall the Kaspersky software completely, and the same with what remains of the terrible CleanMyMac software.

  • MBP 15" early 2011 with WDC VelociRaptor?

I notice that there is a thread for MBP 15" early 2011 with SSD https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775423 But, I can't afford that type of SSD with only that capacity, i.e. 250GB. Here, in town, it would cost nearly USD500.
So, I'm start to thinking to choose WDC VelociRaptor 2,5" 10000rpm 600GB SATA III 6GB/s WD6000BLHX http://www.amazon.com/600GB-Sata-6GB-2-5-HD/dp/B003G4I5OA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid =1303127766&sr=8-2 which only USD300 with more than 2 times capacity of SSD 510.
I already used VelociRaptor 3,5" 10000rpm 300GB SATA II 3GB/s WD3000HLFS  on my PC and it is producing excessive heat, so that I should turning on the HDD fan which has 2500rpm.
The question is: will it produce an excessive heat also? since MBP 15" body is aluminum unibody that is perfect conductor to transfer heat. I saw iFixIt website tear it down piece per piece. So, I think it still do able. But is it compatible also?
    thanks.

    Hi n,
I would continue working with AppleCare, because if it turns out to be a hardware issue, you'll want to get it repaired while still under warranty.
Have they suggested/have you done a reinstall of the OS yet?

I see an impressive collection of LaunchAgents, Launch Daemons, Internet Plugins and drivers for who knows what. At this point I would like to suggest a completely clean install of your system (after making a complete backup of course).
At the very least uninstall the Kaspersky software completely, and the same with what remains of the terrible CleanMyMac software.

  • OS X Lion Screen Sharing Slow on MBP 13" (Early 2011)

    Hello All,
I've been cruising forums and various posts, but have not seen anything directly relating to the issue I'm having. I just upgraded all my Macs to Lion and when I screen share(SS) from my lion macs at work to my lion macs at home there has been a notable drop in performance.
Here's where it get's stupid though. I can screen share to my Mini with very little to no lag at all from my MacBook Air at work. The Mini is directly hooked to my  time capsule (2008,1TB). However, when I SS into my MBP 13" early 2011(wireless connection) the MBP becomes almost completely unresponsive or delayed to any change by 5+min.
I tried ss'ing into my mini and then from my mini to my MBP 13" and that was at least responsive, but obviously laggy. So what the frick man. Why can't I SS into my MBP from work? This was never an issue when all these macs were running 10.6.8.
I guess I should also mention that the Mini hasn't been able to update ARD 3.5 yet, because of a separate issue that I haven't gotten around to. Is it perhaps the ARD update that is screwing up my MBP13"?
    Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I think it has to do with the 'server' computer. When I remotely control my other snow leopard computers, it is snappy. When I connect to my iMac running Lion, it is slow. The whole page blinks like it is rendering all text/images/backgrounds all the time. So it seems to be loading the entire frame. On the contrary, when remoted into a Snow Leopard machine, only the word or area that you are typing is blurry, then crisp as it renders. It doesn't try to reload the whole screen since you are only modifying a small portion of it.
