MBP 13 Inch Mid 2010 Only accepting 6 GB Ram upgrade not 8GB

I just tried upgrading my ram today from 4GB to 8GB and the computer will only accept 6GB. Not both 2x4GB sticks. The Ram is within the specs for the computer and should be working just fine. Not sure what is going on. Both sticks work with a 2gb stick but not together. Any help would be appreciated. Here is the specs on the Memory. G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3 SODIMM 204PIN PC3-10666

A 2010 MBP RAM should have these specifications: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The RAM you installed does not appear to match what is required.
Macs are very selective when it come to RAM.  OWC and Crucial are the most reliable vendors for Mac compatible RAM.
I suggest that you return the RAM and purchase from the afore mentioned vendors.
Ciao.

  • Macbook pro mid 2010 15" 16 GB ram upgrade possible?

    OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
    Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

stevie, a third party app called airparrot will give you the pretty much the same as mirroring and forks on Macs too old to mirror.

No it is not an SSD because it has a rotating speed. Solid-State Drives have no moving parts. This drive rotates @ 7200 RPM it has a moving disk. A 3.5" drive will not fit in your MacBook Pro, and I don't think that having a 3.5 is any better than having a 2.5. I'm not 100% sure, I'll get back to you on that. I'm pretty sure there's no difference.

  • MBP, 15", mid-2010, Yosemite, is sluggish!

    Hello,
I have read the post below this one "MacBook suddenly started running slow" posted by "stephjonas", and have completed the first step given by Linc as follows....  (also, I checked my battery cycle count which is 262 out of a maximum of 1,000)
"First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
                   Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself,                solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web                browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that                opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the                TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit                window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that."
I completed this step and the anonymized results are as follows:

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NEXT?  Thank you all in advance...

"Hacked" is not my terminology, and I don't believe it's intended to be derogatory. What you describe is a perfectly legitimate reason to alter Hosts.
If your Mac still isn't working as expected after uninstalling Intego and Trend Micro, read on. The necessity to have a reliable backup cannot be overstated, since what you describe may be an indication of impending disk failure.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

    Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hey Cris from London,
I would try out the recommended steps in the following link:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
Let us know if any of the steps within resolved the issue.
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
    Take care,

  • Did MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) support memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3

    Did MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) support memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3??

The correct RAM specifications for your 2010 MBP are:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
What you quote may or may not work, and if it does seem to work, it may not work correctly.  For one to deviate from the correct specifications often leads to unnecessary complications.  One only has to explore many posts on this subject on this forum.
Best places to get RAM for your MBP are from OWC or Crucial.
Note, I have a 2010 MBP and I have made said upgrade.
    Ciao.

  • 15-inch Mid-2010 memory upgrade issues

    Hi,
I have a 15-inch mid-2010 MBP running Mountain Lion, that I upgraded from 4 to 8 Gb of memory in Sept. 2012. The memory i purchased was a 2x4 gb set of Corsair Value rated at 1333 MHz. The upgrade went smooth, and i did not have any problems for a few months.
Then late in december or early in january, I had a few Kernel Panics. I didn't think too much of it, as I was busy with exams, and thought it might be a software issue or something, maybe related to VMware Fusion. The KP's started getting a bit more frequent, and suddenly one day the machine wouldn't boot at all, it just KP's at the Apple logo and then goes in a loop. I now suspected a memory problem, as my experience tells me that this is a usual cause of KP's.
I started fiddling with the memory sticks, and determined that one of the blocks would boot, so i went to the place i bought the set and talked to them. They agreed that the one block was probably faulty, and replaced my memory with a 2x4 Gb set of Corsair Mac Memory. This is 1066 MHz CL7, and should be compatible with MB,MBP and iMac, according to the packaging. The problem is that the machine will not boot with this memory either. It just goes for the same loop and KP's at the Apple logo. I can't even get this to boot with one stick in the machine, so it's arguably worse.
The machine works well with the original memory, It's been a rock solid main machine with 4Gb of ram for about a month now.
I tried PRAM and SMC reset to no avail. I tried booting into boot camp with the new memory, but it just never seems to load Windows. This also works with the old memory.
I'm a bit lost as to what i should try next. I suspect it's a problem with the Logic Board, i just don't see how, seeing as it used to work with 8 Gb, and that it still works with 4 Gb.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

So, i've played around with things a bit more. 4 gigs of ram is still rock solid. I've had the memory in a friends computer, an HP PC, where it works just fine.
Also, the computer starts up fine in fail safe mode if i hold down shift during boot, but that's no way to live.
I should probably have mentioned in my first post that I have replaced my optical drive with a 64 gb SSD that i boot OS X from. Since Windows does not start up either, and i've had that part of the setup for about two years, I wouldn't think that is the problem.
The computer has been running 15 passes of Rember this night, and was still running when i got up, so it's clearly not entirely broken.
    Any suggestions?

  • How to update a MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 with SSD?

I know that this question probably been asked many times before, but i can't really find the answers to my specific questions.
I want to update my MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 / 2,66-GHz Intel Core i7-processor, 8 GB memory, running latest Mavericks version (full specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581?viewlocale=nl_NL) with a SSD (i think a 500GB) to speed up my MacBook Pro.
I have about 400GB of data, personal and work related (mostly design work) that is really important to me of course. I use 3 harddrives (one offsite) at the moment to backup everything using Time Machine which works great, because i always can fall back on it when i delete something accidentally.
The physical installation looks quite simple to do, but i have some questions about the entire procedure i hope someone can help me with:
Which SSD will fit in my Macbook Pro the best (specs)? What to look for?
And what about TRIM support to make SSD last longer, i heared that Apple default drives that come with the Mac will support TRIM, but what about any other SSDs on the market do support it and if so which ones?
There are different ways to do install SSD, but what is best procedure?
Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner or restore from Time Machine?
Clean install with Bootable USB flash drive with Mavericks and restore from Time Machine?
Buy a USB enclosure for SSD and Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner first and boot it to check and than install the drive?
Could anybody help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Krijn

Look here for the maximum memory for each MBP model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
The limit is given by the memory controller ("northbridge").
There are no thermal drawbacks expanding the memory to the maximum supported limit...
However, as explained, often Apple did specify an "official" maximum RAM amount which is in reality shorter than the real value, simply because, when the machine was launched, memory sticks of the proper size for giving maximum capacity were not available.
Apple never revises the specs after the launch...
But this did not happen in your case: the maximum memory for mid-2010 Core machines appears to be effectively just 8 Gb, form the page linked above...
Final remark: in my experience, the SSD counts much more than memory for speeding up a laptop! As you already have 8 Gb, there is little value to expand to 16Gb even if it was posisble. Better to invest the same money in a  larger SSD...
I expanded mine because it was equipped with just 4 Gb, and purchasing 16Gb Corsair was costing as 8 Gb Crucial. However, it was not a wise choice, those cheap Corsair memories were bad, the seller had to exchange both sticks...
If I could come back, it was better to spend more and buy Crucial memory sticks!

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris
