MBP 13" locks up frequently

i currently own a MBP 13", purchased in august of 2010. often during use, the computer will become completely unresponsive. cannot move mouse, closing the screen does nothing (the screen, apple logo and keys all remain illuminated.) and it must be restarted. sometimes it will even lock up immediately upon reboot. i've taken my laptop to be serviced by apple, kept it for five days, got it back and still the same exact thing. i even backed up my hard drive and formatted the entire drive. it seems hopeless and i have no idea what to do. any similar issues or advice?

It is a known issue still under investigation.

  • MBP Constantly Locking Up

I couldn't find a sufficient answer for this by searching. I have the 15" Mid Summer 2009 MBP. 2.8ghz with the 512mb graphics card, 4gb ram etc etc. For the past few months, it has been locking up like crazy. Sometimes once a day, today, it locked up constantly for the last half hour. I've been keeping activity monitor on, and usually its Firefox, which shoots up to 100% cpu sometimes, but it's not just Firefox. Adium does it too, as well as some other programs. Usually, if I wait about 30 seconds, it goes away on it's own. It's happened while I've been doing nothing but in the middle of a YouTube video as well. This happened when I had Leopard, and has continued since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. This is getting unbearable. My machine is totally fast and never lags except when it gets these complete lock-ups. I have no idea what's causing this. Any help? Thanks.

I agree with dwd about the question of 3rd party RAM. But clearly you stated that it is Apple RAM
But I am also curious if you have the EFI 1.7 Firmware running on the MBP.
Here how you can verify if you do have the EFI 1.7 Firmware update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
This update cause havoc with A-LOT of 13" & 15" MBP's it was suspected to only effect MBP's that had upgraded to a 3rd party HDD that was SATA 3.0. But the reality was it did effect stock Macs and SATA 1.5 drives.
    Just food for thought.
If you do not believe that this is an issue then lets continue.
    1. Run "Verify Disk" and "Repair Permission" from Disk Utilities. If "Verify Disk" returns errors then you will need to boot with the OSX install DVD to attempt repair.
Also while you're in DU "First Aid" at the bottom note the drives S.M.A.R.T status it should read "Verified".
    2. Download a program such as AppleJack or ONYX ( I suggest both) and use them to clean system Cache files and run the UNIX scripts "Daily, Weekly, Monthly".
    3. You might also log into another user and see if this problem exist under that user. If you don't have another user then simply create one in System/Prefs/Users.
    4. If none of these works than I would look at the possibility that your RAM or HDD is dying. I would recommend creating a back up as soon as possible.
If you have an external drive? You could load OSX on it and boot from it to see if the problem exist then. Or if you have another Mac you could utilize Target Disk Mode and boot from it to verify your hardware.

  • Firefox locks up frequently

Firefox locks up, which then locks up my whole computer for about 30-45 seconds when browsing websites. Sometimes it happens over and over and over, sometimes I can go a week without a problem. It's not a particular website...just random. I've tried with and without my addons. This is a brand new computer I built with Win7, no other issues.

I had the same problem. The solution: New mainboard. ALL mainboards using NVidia chipsets are likely to crash every hour or so because of crappy programmed drivers and hardware that's operating beyond save limits. I had all kinds of problems: USB-devices disconnecting frequently, system refusing to boot every now and then, all browsers crashing and all sorts of other neat problems. I just swapped the mainboard to an AMD-Chipset and now everything works fine. No crashes the last two months. I'm still using the same Windows7 installation, the same firefox and my old profile that previously crashed 10 times a day. I just swapped the mainboard, deinstalled the nvidia drivers, then installed new network and sound-drivers. That's it.

  • MBP disks locked on reinstall

I have a MBP with Lion on it. It wont boot past the Apple logo so I want to reinstall the laptop. Now this can only be done with Apple's internet recovery but the thing is that when I choose to do an internet recovery I have to select which disk I want to use. Problem is that there is only one disk to choose and that is Recovery HD 650 MB total, 127.1 MB free. Says this disk is locked so I cant select it and continue with the reinstall.
Other times I've tried I've got two disks to choose from. The recovery hd and the Macintosh hd 499 GB total, 490 GB free. But both are locked.
Do you know any solution to this problem?

Boot into Internet Recovery and erase the boot volume in Disk Utility. All data on the volume will be destroyed. If it won't let you do that, repair the internal drive. That means you select the drive icon -- not the volume icons nested beneath it -- and then click Repair Disk. Then try erasing again. If successful, quit Disk Utility and install OS X.
If you can't complete this procedure, or if you ever have another problem like this, the drive needs to be replaced.

  • IMac Locks up frequently

    Guys,
since the last two days my iMac seems to have been locking up VERY frequently for a long-ish time (over aminute). Looking at permissions it seems it continuously reports display preference stuff. I repair them, run the utility again and get the exact same report as before the repair.
I don't use excessive resources, only google chrome and a VPN client since I'm in China. The latter should not be an issue as I have been doing this for over a year without problems. I know this isn't a description that will immediately lead to an answer that fixes my issues, but How can I find out what is causing these problems? I only know of the disk utility app that can help.

It's not heat related. the computer doesn't get any hotter than before. teh fan doesn't even come on. It does start up slowly. I recently moved about 50% of my harddrive to an external harddrive to see if space was the issue, but that has not improved anything. Here's what I get constantly. .

  • MBP 2011 Locked

    Hello everyone.
I have a MBP since April, in June I had to take the warranty. After "fix" and Iupdate it to Lion still has the same problem, it crashes randomly withoutmeaning.
It is the trackpad and can not be blocked or shut down, or stop, or move themouse, or write.
    Any solution?
Thanks and sorry for my English

    Hi, Guy.
Have you tried running disk utility? There is a function that will repair disc permissions. It sounds like the OS has locked you out. If it's a new machine you could also ring Apple tech support, they should have other ideas if DU fails.
It's happened to me, but that was fixed by a power of/on, but in that instance the OS got confused because of a system conflict.
    Hope you solve it.
    Scorpii.

  • New MBP with short but frequent freezes

Every hour or so, one or more apps freeze, then causes the whole thing to freeze showing the spinning wheel.
This lasts 10 to 30 seconds most times, and then eveything continues as normal.
It's not under a particularly heavy load at the time (although they're more frequent when it is)
I checked the system logs, but there's no specific error that shows up every time this happened.
I've also had trouble booting which might be related...
The macbook itself is 3 months old with a "self-installed" (someone from work did it) SSD
    2 GHz Intel Core i7,
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.
AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB

Not enough free space on the startup disk can cause the system to freeze.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
I've also had trouble booting which might be related...
Open System Preferenes > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab. Delete any apps you may have listed there then restart your Mac.
You can use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necesary.

  • ITunes locks up frequently during importing process

Problem started after successfully ripping about five CDs. Purged the start up sequence of programs that may have been intruding on the iTunes signal and that worked for a good spell. After ripping about 1300 songs, the problem started again and I'm getting tired of rebooting. I've tried the uninstall-reinstall option with no luck.

I just downloaded Itunes 7.4.1.2 and have been debugging freeze-ups (hard ones that require a full system reboot)as well.
Old or new CD's doesn't seem to make a difference.
Error correction or or off: no diff
EZDC creator 7.5 removed: no diff
All extraneous programs stopped (including AV): no diff.
New memory in my PC: no diff.
All other ripping software works OK (EAC, WMP, creative labs)
Then I changed from the AAC 256 Mbps encoding method to MP3 (320 Mbps) and so far, it hasn't frozen.

  • MBP Retina locked up after 10.9.2 upgrade

It locked up 2 to 3 times a day when the computer is "awaken from sleep" with and without the lid closed.  At the login prompt, the mouse would work but the keyboard would not effectively render the mac useless.  The only thing to do at that point is to power cycle.  I have waited (before powe cycle) a few times but makes no difference.  Looks like 10.9.2 is very buggy based on some of posts.

Have a question for you technical folks. We have two (2) airports, both bought in the last six months, both have the latest firmware installs. One, Airport 2 in our labeling scheme, runs a USB printer and it NEVER, EVER locks up. Fat and happy.
The other one, Airport 1, runs a TOSLink to our Bose speaker system, we simply stream iTunes radio to it. At LEAST once a week, I'll get the flashing amber light and Airport Administrator shows that it's offline (or more specifically, doesn't exist!).
Our network is flat out reliable; it doesn't happen when our ISP refreshes IP addresses, it's not a DNS issue, this one Airport just decides to go 'offline'.
I unplug it, plug it back in and in 30 seconds the world is back to normal.
Do others get the same mileage on Airport Expresses? Is it a streaming music issue? Is there a setting on my router that I should potentially look at?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm posting this just in the hope that it might help someone else, suffering similar issues with their Airport Express. What I found out that helped markedly was to go in, hard reset the Airport, then manually configure it with a static IP address, outside of my normal DHCP enabled devices.
We set aside .1 thru .49 on our DHCP and I setup the AE to grab .20, well outside of the normal 'auto DHCP' devices that grab .1 thru .12 or so. I honestly think the Airport, grabbing .1 or .2 was just getting stepped on by other devices on our wireless network.
So far, so good. On the .20 address, we've had no further issues. I don't know if it was the 'hard reset' or the IP address, or, likely, a combination of the two, but we're back in business.

  • Illustrator CS6 locks up frequently

I am a cartographer using an Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM. My system has a 1TB hard drive (not SSD).and an NVIDIA GEOFORCE 745M.
When I twirl-down a layer, or try something very simple such as selecting a feature either in the layers panel or on the artboard, Illustrator CS6 temporarily locks up and shows the spinning wheel. This occurs even after changing several settings to include: layers panel options (no thumbnails), unchecking 'Overprint Previw,' and even using 'Outline' view.
The problem becomes much worse when knockouts are enabled.
Anyone have any ideas on how to improve Ai CS6 performance? Or do I need CC2014? Thanks.

I will try that. Should I also change my paging file size? And, I use Win 8.1, thank you.

  • IPad air locking up frequently

I have a iPad Air (part of the first ordered iPad Airs) that in the past 24 hours, has locked up more than 4 times.  No real distiguishable pattern - each time it has happened in a different app, including Apple/iOS (e.g. Settings).  Ive already done two hard resets, and it's still doing it.  I'm backing it up now and will do a restore, but just wondering if anyone else is having similar problems?

This has been happening to me, and it is not a problem of not enough memory, etc.  I called Apple Support, and the tech had me turn the smart cover lock off and on, and reset the Network Settings, and it SEEMS to have made a difference.  So far, I have not had the problem again (which also included Safari's suddenly closing).  It also SEEMS to me that the iPad has its speed back.... I had not really noticed that it seemed to have slowed down, but since I made those setting tweaks, it has seemed much faster.  So, you might try these things and see if it makes a difference for you.
