MBP 15" 2010 doesn't allow boot up from DVD/CD.

My Macbook Pro 15" mid 2010 won't allow boot up from CD/DVD using the C key or choosing it from boot menu. It's running 10.6.7 and the boot up media i'm using are the origianl 10.6 and 10.5 disc. The CD's will show up when computer is booted up. Also the boot media works on other computers.

Your mid-2010 computer requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.3 to boot. Only the disc that was shipped with it contains the necessary version. A retail 10.6 disc can't boot it, and no 10.5.x disc can boot it. Use the one that was shipped with it and no other.

my question is simple, so please let the answer be simple:
I have done partition on my MBP today, in order to give me more redundancy in case of a Hard drive failure. I witnessed one yesterday on a brand spanking Imac--> not pretty--> the white screen of death!! I thought I´d better cover myself and I split my HD in two--> no probs.
Anyways, I decided to try to boot from my original installation disc--> 10.5.7, Leopard.
I booted while pressing "C", or holding "Option"……and always ended up with the same thing:
It just takes me to a language selection screen, I selected my language, and then it takes me to the software installation--> but I don´t want that--> I just want to reboot from my disc--> as a general test. (Just in case of that dreaded white screen, one day!!)
So, I went to to "Stop installation" in the menu above, and I chose "Reboot" and then I chose my installation disc--> and again and again, it just takes me back to the language screen etc etc etc!!
It´s like a Merry go Round………….
What am I missing??
My Snow Leopard installation disc does exactly the same, by the way…………..

All I get from my disc is an installation menu (after the language selection) and if I try to boot up from there (to my desktop / background etc) by selecting "stop installation--> start up disc".........it goes back to the language selection and the software installation........just where I was 3 minutes ago!
What am I doing wrong?
My friend booted up the other day from his FireWire external hard drive and he got everything, SO quick! His personal desktop, everything!

You're missing the point. When you boot from your installation disk it's to install the OS and/or repair the disk and check the hardware, etc.. Your friend has a bootable external drive. he used the OS Installation disk to create that.

G5 iSight Wont Boot Tiger From DVD!!

Hello All,
I am a Mac amateur and I am having trouble with an iMac G5 iSight.
I am considered the IT man of the family but have little experience with Macs but understand that they don't install/function like pcs.
Here's my problem. My Uncle has this iSight G5 and has hardly ever used it since he bought it so I have took it off him. He has a user and password prompt at the startup(can't remember either). He says he doesn't want anything thats on the machine so I thought I'd do a clean install/erase from inserting the install disc and holding down the 'option' key at startup to boot to the dvd but when I do this, it only shows the Macintosh Disk and no Install Disc icon to start the install. I also heared that pressing the c key at start up will boot to the cd but this does nothing and just boots up OS X as normal of the hard drive. I am doing this with the original backup disks but also tried with a copy of OS X 10.4.2 but that isnt recognised when booting with the option key held. This is driving me mad. My brother has a 'non' iSight G5 and doing the option key reboot with the G5 restore disk you can see the install icon and same applies to the Tiger install DVD.
Can anyone help?

Not only is installing the right files a concern with the Target Disk Mode method, the iSight's installer disk may refuse to install anything at all since in TDM the iSight's drive appears as just another drive attached to the non-iSight model. If the installer is like the one for my rev B model, the only OS install option also installs the bundled iLife apps. Since these apps are otherwise a retail product, the installer may check for a matching model & refuse to run because it will detect a non-iSight one.
Other things to consider:
A. The iSight model is not constructed like the two earlier iMac G5's to be user serviceable. The case back does not come off; rather, the front bezel & LCD screen must be removed to access the interior components. Since this was not designed to be done by users, this involves carefully removing a taped in place black film mask, removing hard to reach Torx head screws, & handling the bare LCD screen assembly. This would almost certainly void the warranty & might damage something if done by the inexperienced.
B. Find out if the iSight model was registered with Apple by the original owner. If so, have it transfered to your name so you can call Applecare with your issues. Also consider the Applecare extended protection plan.

Try hitting the escape button from boot up. It normally gives you the boot options where you can select the DVD drive.
If you can't get into the boot options, try getting into the bios with F10 and change boot order options.

MBP 13" 2010 doesn't restart properly - Yosemite

I recently installed yosemite on my MBP 13" and now when i go to use the restart feature in the Apple menu it starts to restart but fails 1/4 of the way through the progress bar and a round circle with a line through it appears.
I if i shut down and put the power back on, it starts up with no issues.

I have tried resetting NVRAM but to no avail.
i installed the yosemite on to a fresh SSD drive as a fresh install on a newly formatted drive, but to no avail.

thanks for all the input, but so far i've had no luck. as for the install, i bought a brand new ssd drive, and put a brand new copy of Yosemite on it. it was a blank disk and now it has yosemite. it is a secondary computer that i am updating so it's not critical, just a annoyance.
i tried the SCM reset, but it did nothing.
the computer starts up correctly and works perfectly, but if i use the "Restart" option in the Apple drop down menu, it stalls on restart as shown in the images above. when that happens, i push the power button until it turns off, then i push the power button again and it turns on and boots up normally. only when doing a "restart" do i have an issue.
so not sure how to resolve that, but if i am unable to, then it will just have to be the way it is, i guess.

MBP 13" (2010 model) will not boot from Restore DVD!

I just upgraded the HDD on my 13" MBP to the 1TB Toshiba MK1059GSM. The MBP is 3 weeks old. Upgrade went fine in terms of the process. However, when I insert the OS restore DVD that came with the machine and restart (using ALT/OPTION) and select to boot from the DVD, the Apple logo appears with the spinner and the system just stays like this. I can hear the DVD spinning but nothing elese ever happens! Any ideas as to what could be wrong? Could it be that this new Toshiba HDD is not compatible and the DVD does not have a driver for it?

SATA drives use a standard interface and no additional drivers are necessary. That's not to say that the drive itself can't be faulty. As has been suggested, try removing the drive and see if you can boot from the DVD. If that works, you can be pretty sure there may be a problem with your new hard drive. Hopefully you kept your original drive so you can always put that back in. Faulty hardware can always be frustrating because you never think that's the problem. Let us know how you make out.

I want to wipe iBook of it's content, but it will not boot up from DVD

Can someone tell me how I clear off the content of iBook and install the basic set of the applications? I have the original OS 9 disks but they will not boot up with these. I have gradually upgraded the OS so I don't have disks to match 10.4.11.
I want to give this away, as I bought new MacBook Pro recently and I have all of the files on the new computer, (and on another hard drive).

Should you be concerned about spies, industrial and foreign, or even you own personal information, there is a standard method of erasing ATA disks that contain government classified information. Most ATA disks have it built in (and is a concern when purchasing computers for classified research). It's extreme, but sometimes necessary: information otherwise remains stored on 'bad' blocks, &c.
At one time, only the DOS program HDDerase activated the secure erase in ROM. For Mac users, the Linux program 'hdparm' (which has other uses) will do this from a Live Linux distribution on CD (unless you can boot a USB Flash Drive).'Darwin' might have it.

I just bought an IdeaPad U310 without OS. I tried to boot from a Windows 7 DVD, but as I choose the USB-DVD in the boot menu list, nothing starts and I come back to the booting list.

Try going to BIOS and turning off secure boot if it's enabled. Then either select legacy mode (not UEFI) or if you prefer installing in UEFI mode make sure that CSM support is enabled.

How do I boot XServe from DVD?

I'm upgrading the operating system on our XServe G5 from Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 to 10.5. However, the installation instructions in the "Upgrading and Migrating" guide are not helpful in describing the initial startup.
I would like to startup directly from the installation DVD (without using a firewire, etc.). As a first attempt, I followed the procedure described in the XServe User Guide for "Choosing a Startup Method from the Front Panel". I tried holding the identifier button as described. Step 2 states "Continue to hold in the system identifier button until the top row of blue lights blink sequentially."
This did not work. Instead, both rows of blue lights blinked simultaneously, and the startup proceeded in the usual way. The installation DVD was ejected in the process. Has anyone tried this? What went wrong?

I thought so, but perhaps I'm wrong. Unfortunately, I'm a lowly graduate student who does not have access to the origninal documentation at the moment. In addition, I've upgraded the Server Admin software to 10.5, and this version does not seem to be compatible with the current 10.3.9 Server software. As a result, I can't access the machine remotely to verify this... I do have the license number, however, so maybe I can get technical specs that way.
Do you know where to find clear instructions for starting in target disk mode? Can this be done using a remote machine on the network?

Can't Boot Tiger from External HD

I just got a new MBP, and I'm having trouble booting Tiger from my external HD. I installed Tiger on my Lacie Rugged HD, so that I can use Avid. I had no problem booting from the drive using my 1.67 PB. But trying the same technique with my new MPB - holding down the Option key as the computer starts - only gives me the MPB HD as a bootable option. The Lacie mounts fine on the MPB, but it just won't appear as an option for a boot disk. I also checked System Preferences > Startup Disk, and I only can choose between the MPB HD and a Network Drive; the Lacie doesn't get recognized as a bootable disk (even though, again, it is properly mounted).
Any suggestions?

Yes, you can create three partitions. However, they will all have the same partition scheme, make sense? Since PPC-based Macs can't boot from GUID-partioned drives, you need to use APM.
So, the solution is to use format the drive with Apple Partition Map (not GUID) and create the 3 partitions of the desired size. Then, use something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the PB HDD to one partition and the MBP HDD to another partition. Note that you can install Tiger for the PB from the PB install discs directly to the external HDD, but you can't do that for the MB partition, that you need to clone.
In fact, I have my LaCie d2 external HDD set up just like that. Apple Partition Scheme, 3 partitions, one for my wife's PB, one for my MBP, and the remaining one for general storage. I can boot both of our laptops from the external drive, and all three partitions mount fine as disks on both machines.

Tiger reinstallation/ booting from DVD problems

I've been trying to reinstall Tiger (10.4.7) on my 12" G4 1.33 iBook, but either I'm doing something wrong or not eveything's ok with my system. I put the DVD 1 in, doubleclick the 'Install Mac OS X and Bundled...' icon, a pop-up appears, I click restart and the system boots back to desktop, as if there was no installation required at all (except for the 'my_name's G4' window open, with my harddrive, dvd and network icons). I tried booting it from DVD but when I try to hold the C key a grey screen appears with a folder symbol with Mac OS face icon switching with question mark, and it boots to desktop again. Any ideas anyone?

Some further info: When I try to boot holding an option key the only drive I can boot from is HD (despite the installation DVD being in the drive). I tried to check if the DVD is broken but I was able to copy everything from the DVD to my HD, still the Read before you install.app and Apple Hardware test readme.app files won't work, I tried copying them to my Applications folder with no result. I tried Optional Installs and managed to install languages support without any problems, yet after all these operations my Text edit and quicktime won't start (icons have changed to default .app icons and there's an error when i try to start them). All these can't be caused by the fact that the installed system is 10.4.7 and the disks are 10.4.2, can it?

MBP Late 2010, How can I install Win7 Boot Camp using External Optical Driv

I have a new MBP purchased in February. It's not the 2011 model. I replaced the Optical drive with an SSD drive and put the optical drive in an external enclosure. The Optical drive works great, reads, writes, etc. My Windows 7, Pro 64bit DVD works also, tested on a PC.
I use the Boot Camp assistant to create a partition. It them reboots and never starts up from the optical drive. I get an Apple logo alternating with a stop sign.
I have got back to OS X by starting with the Option key and choosing my OS X volume.
I tried booting to the DVD by using the option key, that did not work. I then choose the EFI option which allowed me to hit any key and appeared to boot from the external optical drive. Windows setup screen came up and I hit enter to start the file loading process. It eventually stopped when the progress bar was all the way across the screen. Then nothing.
Questions {Please give definitive answers, not guesses, thanks :)}
1) Is it possible to setup a boot camp Windows installation without an internal optical drive? Yes/No.
2) If yes, how?
3) I see the rEFIt utility has helped some but I read mixed reports. Will this help me boot and run Windows setup from an external optical drive? I don't want to install it if it's not known to be a certain fix.
4) Is my only options to reinstall the optical drive?
I chatted to OWC the vendor that sells the bracket. They had no idea how to install a Windows BC partition without an internal drive.
I am seriously discouraged by what seems to be Apple wanting to control everything. I had a Mac Pro and Air book in my future but now, it's on hold.

I tried what you are doing with a 2007 MBP, and could not get any Windows CD s to boot from an external optical drive, firewire or USB.
I think this is fundamental to Windows which won't boot from an external USB drive either even on a Windows machine (although I believe there may be complex ways of achieving this). I don't think this is Apple trying to control the world.
I ended up taking the MCE Optibay out and putting the original optical drive back in.
Just possible that something has changed between a 2007 MBP and 2010 MBP, but I doubt it.
If you want the second internal HD, you have two options:-
1. Put the Apple optical back in, install Windows, then take out the optical and refit the SSD. The external optical will still be able to install windows apps and data etc, just not boot any windows install CDs or utilities (like Paragon rescue disks). You will not be able to do a Windows repair install without refitting the optical.
2. Parallels, which has come a long way in the last two years. I am 99% certain that Parallels will install from an external optical.

Migration Assistant doesn't allow me to choose what drive.

Well, I got my new computer. I tried to migrate a drive from my old computer using Migration Assistant. and it doesn't allow me to choose what drive.
In my old computer I have 5 drives. The original HD (was 10GB, was replaced last year by a 40 GB) and on my Hitachi 250 GB drive that I added 2 years ago, there's a partition with 4 drives.
I wanted to migrate one particular drive from there (called Current work).
First I did a mistake. I connected both computer via the firewire in the afternoon when there was enough daylight so I don't have to do it later at night (the computers are under the table.) I thought it's OK since I'm not pushing any button yet ("migrate now", "transfer", and such).
I turned on the new computer and a message appeared: you must restart.
That's strange, I said to myself. it's a brand new computer. Usually It says that when there's a problem, but OK I restart and when it's back on, I see that my external drive (Neptune from OWC which was still hooked up in the old computer) is on the desktop. And it took just a few seconds. I open it and all the files, etc. are there. It did copy the whole external drive !
I'm not an computer expert but I believe the Mac Pro did notice that's there's a firewire hooked up and then, without asking me, migrated the external drive and that's why it asked me to restart. I would have prefer if it tells me "restart so migration can begin".
I don't mind for now that my external drive is on my new computer. I can always erase it if I don't want it. It is still external right ? so it doesn't intrude on the 640 GB of my HD so I just keep it.
But it also copied/migrate Mac HD 40 GB which is full of OS 9 and I almost never use it anymore. I don't want it coz it has applications and they advise not to migrate applications (certainly not applications with issues).
They say migrate folders, settings but re-install applications.
And it migrated also another drive called "Scratch" which has only personal date no system, no software.
Anyway, I erased everything and re-installed using the Install disk that came with the computer.
BTW, what they say in the manual (p. 90: Re-installing the software that came with your Mac Pro) is different than what really happens.
They say insert disk, double- click on Install and then click options in the "Select a destination" pane of the installer. Then click "erase and install" Problem is: there's no "Select a destination" pane. Or any options.
I had to go to Disk utility and erase, then re-install OS X.
Then re-install the applications using "Install applications" (the other disc that came with the computer. )
OK, I did that. Then while everything is empty, new, I used Migration Assistant.
Now here is the reason why I post this.
They say hold T key until you see a firewire icon then select a drive. I can't see when there's an icon coz I have only one monitor, so I just hold and hold the T-key and turn on the old computer. The screen shows "waiting for you other computer to restart" 2 min.... 5 min... 7 min. Nothing happens. I stop holding.
I look at the desktop and I see that the icon of the old 40 GIG Mac HD is there. (and I believe with a firewire logo, but not sure about that.)
I have the impression that if I kept the T-key longer it would have migrate the other drives as well.
They say keep the T-key down until you see the firewire (then let go I suppose. As I said I don't see what's going on on the desktop of my old computer so I kept the T-key for a few minutes. I also tried another time to let go after 1-2 min. No difference.
I shut down the new comp. and the old computer screen appears automatically (both are connected to the monitor; the old with analog port, the new with digital port) and sure enough the firewire icon is moving on the screen.
I go back to the new computer and put the old 40 GIG Mac HD in the trash. Actually, when it touched the trash, I just saw an eject icon and the drive disappear. Did not go in the trash which is empty. So I guess I ejected, not sure what's the difference but I looked for it to see if it's anywhere in the computer. Could not find it. Not in the HD, not in the desktop. Good, I don't want it there. Is it hidden somewhere ?
So I tried again but wondering perhaps the old computer should RESTART not turn on (it was off) so now I wait until it's on, then push restart. I hear the gong when it shuts off but that's it, no other gong when it comes back. I keep the T-key. But nothing happened. Just see the message "waiting for your other computer to restart"
PS: BTW Target mode (which seems to me similar to Migrating with "Migration Assistant") will not work for me because it must be SATA, mine is ATA.
I didn't try but read that it has to be SATA.
Is it the same ? In migrating they say hold down the T-key (T for target)
And how come that my 40GB HD which is ATA did migrate (not that I wanted too but still).
Also, this drive ("Current Work") that I want to migrate to the new computer is in my external drive. Can't I just drag it ? If it has only personal data, files and folders I know I can, but It has system (OS X) and applications. It's the one I use and boot on, in my old G4 but I want to transfer Files and folders and settings, so the new computer will know what are my Safari preferences, Automatic fill-in, and perhaps it will move my iTunes music Library too ?
Basically everything except applications. Although I would like my Nikon scanner to be in the new computer as well as the LaCie DVD recorder but I guess I can do that later, separately ?
What are the settings or info I need ? Because if it's just Safari preferences, automatic fill-in and other such small thing, it might be better to just do it again in the new comp and forget about the hassle of migrating.

Try getting into Windows and then plugging in the Superdrive. The drive will only be attached to one OS or the other, not both.

Installing Boot Camp 5.0.5033 (downloadable at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638) on Windows 8 x64 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 using BootCamp\setup.exe, I get the following message: “Installation Error. Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model”.
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634, Windows 8 x64 is not supported by Boot Camp 5 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 .
Previous version, Boot Camp 4.0, causes bluescreens on Windows 8 (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20131524#20131524).
Fortunately, it might be still possible to employ updated Boot Camp by launching “msiexec /i BootCamp.msi” from BootCamp\Drivers\Apple folder using administrative command prompt (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813%28v=WS.10%29.aspx).
However, new Boot Camp 5.0.5033 does not contain all the drivers for 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010. According to Microsoft (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements), the MacBook Pro config (Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM) exceeds Windows 8 x64 hardware requirements. Windows Experience Index for this laptop is approx. 5.1 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/what-windows-experience-index).
Does anybody know, is there any technical reason why Windows 8 x64 is not supported by Boot Camp 5 on 13” MBP Mid-2010?
Is there a specific hardware/firmware deficiency in this MacBook model, incompatible with Win8? Maybe NVIDIA refused to provide Win8-compatible drivers for its chipset components (GeForce 320M graphics card though is still supported by latest notebook drivers available at www.geforce.com)?

MBP early 2010 EFI update, external display no longer functioning

I just updated my MBP early 2010 to EFI 2.6 and now my external display (U2711 connected via displayport) doesnt display anything anymore. (exactly right after restart without touching anything)
The monitor tries to show something right after boot but then goes into power saving mode. It worked perfectly the second I updated.
Any ideas? I already resetted PRAM/NVRAM and I could connect the display successfully by way of HDMI so it may have something to do with the resolution (2.560 x 1.440 (WQHD) or displayport.
